The Presidency yesterday hit back at Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) leader Gen. Muhammadu Buhari for criticising government over last weekend’s gun attack on Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero. Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) President Ayo Oritsejafor also said the Federal Government has failed in its commitment to security of the nation. He spoke through a statement on the attack on Alhaji Bayero. A statement in Abuja by the CAN president’s Special Assistant, Media/Public Affairs, Mr. Kenny Ashaka, said: “The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, is saddened by Saturday’s gun attack on the octogenarian and Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. The attack is disturbing and totally condemnable. This attack reinforces CAN’s call to the Federal Government on the need to do more in the area of securing Nigerians and Nigeria. “Although Nigerians are yet to know those behind the barbaric act, I want to, again, appeal to northern political, religious and traditional leaders to say and do more in order to, practically, engage those responsible for the ‘madness’ going on in northern Nigeria and find ways to help end this nightmare. “Too many innocent lives have been lost in unexplainable and avoidable circumstances and this reminds us of victims of bombed churches and those who have been killed by gunmen in their homes and places of worship. “I will like to remind Nigerians of my call to join me in fasting and prayers on the last Friday of every month, beginning from Friday, the 25th of January, 2013. Nigerians should pray for God’s mercy, an end to wickedness and peace over our dear nation. “As the Emir, his two sons and others injured in the attack recuperate, I wish them speedy recovery and pray to the Almighty God that the healing process should be perfected. I also condole with the families of the local council chairman, the emir’s driver and the three body guards who were killed in the attack.” Reacting to Gen. Buhari’s statement on the attack on the Emir, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, described Gen. Buhari’s comments as unfortunate, reckless and opportunistic. Gen. Buhari had said the Nigerian state was not just under an ominous cloud of insecurity but all the citizens under the nation space are also victims. Describing the comments by Gen. Buhari and the CPC as “irresponsible”, Okupe cautioned against politicising the attack on the traditional ruler, stressing that the attempt by Gen. Buhari, the CPC and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to disparage the Federal Government was uncalled for. Okupe said: “Any attempt to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero and members of his family is irresponsible. “Though the attack itself is regrettable, it is difficult at present to blame it on the Boko Haram or terrorism, or in fact on some criminal elements within the society that hid under the spate of insecurity in the state to perpetuate this heinous crime.” The President’s aide added that the police and other security agencies were working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of the attack are arrested and prosecuted. Okupe cited the recent killing of over 20 school pupils in Connecticut, United States by a gunman to show how difficult it is to prevent crime in any part of the world. “At that moment in the United States, no American citizen or group blamed the killings on the President or the government, in spite of the avalanche of security apparatus and expertise available to the United States Government. “What any responsible government must be able to do is to ensure that the perpetrators of these heinous crimes are apprehended, arrested and prosecuted, according to the laws of the land. “We are not impressed by similar stance by the NLC that is supposed to be non partisan in nature and in all approaches. There is indeed absolutely no need to politicise this unfortunate attack on the revered Emir. “In times like this, like in all emergencies, what the nation ought to do is to pull together in the same direction and encourage the citizenry to give full support to government and all security agencies so as to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.” |

How do you feel about December 21, 2012, the date on the Maya calendar that many have been saying would bring worldwide change? Depending on what you expected, you might be relieved, disappointed, or indifferent. Was it just another incorrect prediction for the end of the world? What about “the end of the world” described in the Bible? (Matthew 24:3, King James Version) Some fear that the earth will be burned up. Others are fascinated by end-time scenarios. Many have simply grown tired of being told that the end is near. But could those be reactions to fiction rather than to fact? You might be surprised to learn what the Bible really says about the end of the world. Not only does the Bible give reasons to look forward to the end but it also acknowledges the frustration that can set in if the end seems to be overdue. We invite you to consider the Bible’s answers to some common questions about the end of the world. Will the earth be burned up? THE BIBLE’S ANSWER: “[God] has founded the earth upon its established places; it will not be made to totter to time indefinite, or forever.”— PSALM 104:5. The earth will not be destroyed, either by fire or by any other means. Instead, the Bible teaches that this planet is mankind’s eternal home. Psalm 37:29 says: “The righteous themselves will possess the earth, and they will reside forever upon it.”—Psalm 115:16; Isaiah 45:18. After God created the earth, he said that it “was very good,” and he still feels that way. (Genesis 1:31) Far from planning to destroy it, he promises to “bring to ruin those ruining the earth”— and to protect it from permanent damage.—Revelation 11:18. You may wonder, though, about 2 Peter 3:7. That Bible verse says: “The heavens and the earth that are now are stored up for fire.” Does this not show that the earth will be burned up? Actually, the Bible sometimes uses the terms “heavens,” “earth,” and “fire” figuratively, as symbols. For example, when Genesis 11:1 says: “All the earth continued to be of one language,” it uses “earth” to mean human society. The context of 2 Peter 3:7 shows that the heavens, earth, and fire mentioned there are also symbols. Verses 5 and 6 draw a parallel with the Flood of Noah’s day. On that occasion, an ancient world was destroyed, yet our planet did not disappear. Instead, the Flood wiped out a violent society, or “earth.” It also destroyed a kind of “heavens” —the people who ruled over that earthly society. ( Genesis 6:11) In the same way, 2 Peter 3:7 foretells the permanent destruction of wicked society and its corrupt governments as if by fire. What happens at the end of the world? THE BIBLE’S ANSWER: “The world is passing away and so is its desire, but he that does the will of God remains forever.”—1 JOHN 2:17. “The world” that is to pass away is, not the earth, but the world of mankind whose lives are not in harmony with God’s will. Just as a surgeon might remove a cancerous tumor to save a patient’s life, God will “cut off” the wicked so that good people can truly enjoy life on earth. (Psalm 37:9) In that sense, “the end of the world” is a good thing. Such a positive view of “the end of the world” is implied by the Bible translations that render this expression “the conclusion of the system of things” or “the end of the age.” (Matthew 24:3; New International Version) Since both humankind and the earth survive the end, does it not seem reasonable that a new age, a new system of things, would follow? The Bible answers yes, for it speaks of “the coming system of things.” —Luke 18:30. Jesus called that future period “the renewal of all things.” At that time, he will restore humanity to the conditions that God originally intended. (Matthew 19:28, NIV) We will then enjoy A paradise earth with securi and prosperity for all.—Isaia 35:1; Micah 4:4. Work that is meaningful and satisfying.—Isaiah 65:21-23. The curing of all disease.— Isaiah 33:24. The reversal of aging.—Job 33:25. The resurrection of the dead. John 5:28, 29. If we do “the will of God,” what he asks of us, we need not fear the end of the world. Instead, we can look forward to it. Is the end of the world really near? THE BIBLE’S ANSWER: “When you see these things occurring, know that the kingdom of God is near.”—LUKE 21:31. In the book The Last Days Are Here Again, Professor Richard Kyle writes that “sudden change and social chaos create an atmosphere conducive to predictions of the end of the world.” That is especially the case when the change and chaos seem hard to explain. However, the Bible prophets who spoke about the end were not trying to explain baffling events of their day. Instead, they were inspired by God to describe conditions that would indicate an imminent end of the world. Consider some of those prophecies and decide for yourself whether they are being fulfilled in our time. Wars, famines, earthquakes, and epidemics of deadly disease.—Matthew 24:7; Luk 21:11. Significant increase in crime. Matthew 24:12. The ruining of the earth by mankind.—Revelation 11:18. People who love themselves, money, and pleasures but do not love God.—2 Timothy 3:2, 4. The breakdown of the family. —2 Timothy 3:2, 3. General apathy toward the evidence of the approaching end.—Matthew 24:37-39. As Jesus said, seeing “all these things” lets us know that the end of the world is near. (Matthew 24:33) |

Chelsea have sacked Roberto Di Matteo following their 3-0 defeat to Juventus on Tuesday evening which has put the club's prospects of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stage in doubt. The Blues needed a positive result in Turin to maintain strong hopes of defending their European crown, but Antonio Conte's side destroyed the Premier League club to leave their chances in ruins. And with their Premier League form slipping after a bright start, owner Roman Abramovich has decided to sack the manager, with the club revealing: "Results have not been good enough." A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "Chelsea Football Club has parted company this morning with Manager Roberto Di Matteo. "The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season." The club face a season-defining period over the coming weeks, with a clash against Premier League champions Manchester City on 25 November followed by the must-win game against Nordsjaelland on 5 December. The statement continued: "The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts." Despite winning the Champions League and FA Cup after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas in March of the 2011-12 season, Di Matteo is the latest in a long list of managers who have failed to appease owner Abramovich. After winning seven of his eight opening Premier League games this season, two points from the last four league matches and seven points from a possible 15 in the Champions League have sealed the Italian's fate. The statement read: "The owner and the Board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to an historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club's history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge. "The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager." by Taboola |

The North’s premier socio- political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has listed ways out of the Boko Haram insurgency. Boko Haram (western education is a sin), whose attacks have led to the death of thousands of people and paralysed economic activities in Borno and Yobe states, last month offered to talk with the government. As the government weighs the option presented by the group to facilitate the talks, the ACF has raised a 10-point solution to the insurgency. The Forum demanded that all those arrested on suspicion of committing any offence relating to security challenges in the region should be investigated and prosecuted “without undue delay”. It asked Federal and state governments that had raised committees and panels on security challenges in the North to implement the recommendations of such committees without immediately. Besides, the ACF is seeking the adoption of the United Nations (UN) ratio of one policeman to 400 citizens in the country. The ACF called for the removal of immunity clause in the 1999 Constitution to make the President and governors more transparent and efficient. The suggestions are contained in a 19-page “Roadmap for peace, unity and development of Nigeria.”. The roadmap, exclusively obtained by The Nation, was submitted to the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, by ACF Chairman Alhaji Aliko M. Mohammed. The ACF said: “Operatives of intelligence and security agencies must be given adequate training and retraining on a continuous basis. They must be well- equipped and motivated. “There should be a complete and purposeful reorganisation and reorientation of the Police to make (a) the beat constable more efficient and effective; (b) the investigator to exercise independence, professionalism and efficiency in order to achieve good results(c) members of the Police Force themselves to respect the human rights of citizens as enshrined in the Constitution. “Ensure proper screening of the background of all prospective police recruits using police apparatus and traditional institutions i.e. ward, village and district heads, Emirate Council and similar outfits in other parts of the country. “Continuously screen the existing manpower of security agencies, weed out the unfit and train and continuously retrain. “The procedure laid down for military take-over from the police during civil unrest or disorder should be revised and strictly adhered to. The current practice of deploying the military too frequently on police duties should be discouraged. All such deployments should be given adequate legal cover. “Those arrested on suspicion of committing an offence should be investigated properly and prosecuted without undue delay. “Government should undertake total reform of the criminal justice system in order to achieve speedy dispensation of justice. “There is continuing debate about the desirability of “State Police” but this should be avoided as we are still not politically mature enough to ensure that it is not abused. “In the wake of rising wave of rising security challenges across the country, the Federal and state governments raised various committees and panels to investigate and recommend ways of addressing the problems. Governments are urged to as much as possible implement the recommendations of these panels without further delay to sustain the public confidence in such committees. “The Police Council, in conjunction with the Inspector-General of Police, should work out an establishment for the Force, based on the United Nations ratio one policeman to 400 citizens The distribution of the agreed figure should be made on pro-rata basis. “Thereafter, other factors, such as industrialization, crime wave, sophistication and so on should be taken into consideration to determine deployment to the states. “Statistics should show the manpower contribution by each state to the Federal Police and, if any state exhausts its quota, no recruitment should be made from that state until vacancy occurs. “This will enhance the sense of belonging and provide opportunity for employment of qualified citizens in the North. It will also check the dominance of the police by a section of the country. “State governors should therefore closely monitor the recruitment of their citizens in the Police.” Besides security challenges, the ACF called for the removal of the immunity clause from the 1999 Constitution to enable the president and governors be more transparent and efficient. The roadmap said: “Political leaders must show greater openness and accountability. The most serious impediment to the realization of the goals of peace, security and development is corruption, which fosters bad governance. Bad governance leads to all sorts of evil; treasury looting, misplacement of priorities, nepotism, injustice and distortion of national ideals and moral values. “There is noticeable disconnect in the country between the citizens and governments at all levels. As a result of rampant corruption, there is also noticeable dwindling of resources available to governments. More positive impact will be made by governments in people’s welfare, if leaders take concrete steps to eliminate corruption at all levels. “The immunity clause in the constitution, which is intended to allow governors and the President to do their work unhindered, has become a cover behind which some hide to drain the treasury with impunity. This clause should be expunged from the Constitution. “No group is so pampered by the corrupt Nigerian environment, is so protected from the consequences of their actions and so compensated for their inadequacies than political office holders. As a result, politics seems to be the only thriving in the North. Good governance needs to be enthroned to reverse this ugly trend.” |

Fifa has announced the shortlist for this year's Fifa Ballon d'Or trophy, with 23 men who were selected by their football committee as well as by experts from the magazine France Football. Containing 12 players who are home to La Liga, this year's list is seeing a Spanish domination with two-times winner Lionel Messi, who on monday already grabbed the European Golden Shoe award for scoring 50 La Liga goals last season, being eager to score his third consecutive award. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to be a strong contender for the prestigious prize as well, having played a big role in his side's championship win last season with the help of fellow nominees Mesut Ozil, Iker Casillas, Karim Benzema, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos. The final decisions will be made by the captains and coaches of the national teams and international media representatives, leading into the announcement of the next three finalists on November 29 at a press conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Fifa Ballon d'Or gala will take place at the Zurich Kongresshaus on January 7 2013, along with the Presedential and Fair Play trophies being awarded in the same night. PROBABLE LINEUPS NORWICH CITY Ruddy Martin, Bassong, Barnett, Garrido Johnson, Howson E Bennett, Hoolahan, Surman Holt ARSENAL Mannone Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Santos Ramsey, Arteta, Cazorla Gervinho, Giroud, Podolski The Canaries have Steven Whittaker and Simon Lappin available again after both recovered from ankle injuries although neither are expected to be fit enough to be given an outing against the Gunners. Robert Snodgrass failed to make an appearance for Scotland in the international break due to an ankle injury, and he is a doubt to make Chris Hughton's line-up on Saturday. Harry Kane (ankle) remains sidelined for the Canaries and Jacob Butterfield is still yet to gain enough fitness to make his debut for the club after a long-term injury. For Arsenal, Abou Diaby may make his return from a thigh injury, but Theo Walcott picked up a nasty looking rib injury in England’s 5-0 hammering of San Marino and will miss the trip to Carrow Road, as will Kieran Gibbs (thigh) Bacary Sagna, Wojciech Szczesny and Jack Wilshere are still being eased into competitive football after long-term injuries, while Tomas Rosicky (leg) could return to training next week. Arsene Wenger's main headache will be over who to play up front. Gervinho has been in form so far this season, but Olivier Giroud followed his first Premeir League goal against West Ham with a last- gasp equaliser for France against Spain on Tuesday. DID YOU KNOW? Arsenal have lost just one of their last 12 Premier League away games, winning seven and drawing four. Norwich, in stark contrast, have only won one of their last 12 Premier League matches, losing seven. The Gunners have an excellent record at the home of the Canaries - they're unbeaten in their last twelve trips to Carrow Road. Santi Cazorla has scored more goals from outside the box than any other player in the top European leagues since August 2011, with nine. Maybe expect a long range screamer from the Spaniard on Saturday evening then - Norwich have conceded the most goals from outside the box of any Premier League side, with five. Norwich striker Steve Morison was amongst the goals last season - scoring against the Gunners both home and away. |
