Christianity EtcOne Man Refused To Bow And A Nation Was Marked For Death by Blogsphere(op): 7:59am On Feb 22
The order was signed. The date was chosen. Because of one man’s pride, an entire nation was suddenly marked for destruction.

In the Persian Empire, a powerful official named Haman had just been promoted. He expected everyone to bow to him. Most people did. But one man refused.

Mordecai would not bow.

That single act made Haman furious. Instead of dealing with Mordecai alone, he decided to punish all of Mordecai’s people. He convinced the king, Xerxes I, to sign a law that ordered the killing of every Jew in the empire.

To choose the day this would happen, Haman cast lots, which were like dice. The word used was “Pur.” That is where the name of the Jewish festival Purim later came from. The law was sent out to 127 provinces across the empire, from India to Cush. It was a massive and terrifying decision. An entire people were given a death sentence because of one man’s anger.

Inside the palace, everything was about to change.

Esther, the queen, learned about the decree. She was Jewish, but the king did not know. Until this moment, she had lived quietly in the palace. Now she faced a life changing choice. If she stayed silent, her people would die. If she spoke up, she could lose her own life.

She was no longer just a queen. She was the only person in a position to stop the disaster.

Group Alleges Plot to Invalidate Obasa’s Impeachment as Speaker of Lagos Assembly

*Claims judgment already written

*Declares forged document used to promote embattled clerk

A pro-Lagos development group, Agenda for New Lagos (ANL), has raised the alarm over plans to use the court to invalidate the impeachment of Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, as the speaker of Lagos State.

The group, in a press release by its Protem Chairman, Kamal Olorunnisola, said the court judgment to make this happen has already been written and would be delivered next Monday after hearing the case instituted by Obasa in the heat of his impeachment saga, tomorrow, Monday, March 10th.

In addition to the seemingly unending Lagos Assembly drama, the group claimed that the clerk preferred by Obasa, Mr. Olalekan Biilamin Onafeko, was fraudulently promoted through the back door in. 2022 using “Special Advancement” subject only to the approval of the governor.

Addressing the plot to “legalise the recent illegality” at the Lagos assembly, the group, in the press release titled, “Obasa: the ultimate end of the drama”, claimed that, “Many of the Assenly members were tricked into accepting that Obasa will subsequently resign after Meranda.

“But unknown to them, it was just a political gimmick. As soon as he was ‘re-elected’ out of damage control, he adjourned indefinitely, obviously awaiting judgement in the case instituted to legitimise the illegalities.

“That explains why contrary to the pledge to withdraw hiscase, it continued. They already have the judgment written invalidating the proceedings that removed him. All machinery has been put in place towards railroading the judge.

“Upon given the judgment, obviously wrong in law, Obasa will direct no appeal on behalf of the Assembly while Meranda is already out of the way.

“The import is that he had never been removed while Meranda was never speaker. The further implication is that the removed clerk will equally return contrary to the resistance of his colleagues, as of right as no proceeding that is valid would have removed him.

“Then the Oga will have his way and rejoice. Bearing any last minute change of mind, the judgment cannot change, because it has been written as part of the grand plan to institutionalise Obasa in the assembly,” the group explained.

Shedding more light on the alleged “fraudulent promotion granted Onafeko, the group, which provided the “Special Advancement” letter signed by one Mrs. Folashade Latona, said it was an aberration because only the governor could issue such a letter granting the promotion termed ‘special advancement’.

In the letter dated July 20, 2022, titled: “Special Advancement” and addressed to Onafeko, the terse letter read: “I am pleased to inform you that the Commission (Lagos Assembly Service Commission), at its last policy meeting approved your request for advancement, based upon the recommendation from Lagos House of Assembly.

“Subsequently, you are advanced to the post of Deputy Director, Salary Grade Level 16 notionally and financially from 1st July, 2022. Notice of the event will soon be published in the state’s official gazette. Hearty congratulations.”

According to the group, which also provided the phone number of Mrs. Latona for verification and ask why she signed a special advancement letter in place of the governor, said these were “some of the aberration and illegalities that typify the Obasa leadership.”

The group, therefore, appealed to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the civil society and all lovers of Lagos and democracy to pay attention to the reign of terror in the state and the plan to abuse the judiciary, because the developments in Lagos could blow over and consume all.

PoliticsRe: Beyond APC’s Flashes Of Many Colours - Thisdaylive by Blogsphere(op): 2:19pm On Oct 09, 2024
However, in a full blaze, former governor of Ekiti State, Dr. KayodeFayemi, finally set the stage on fire through his keynote address.

He did not allow the inspiration spurred by Sanwo-Olu to simmer down before riding on the moment.
Building on the foundation laid by the Lagos state governor, Fayemi noted that, “We in the South West wing of our party constitute an important pillar of the APC. I warmly salute and commend the decision to convene this zonal assembly of our party leaders and faithful for various reasons.”

As a foundation member, and one of the many actors, who worked to help create the APC out of a coalition of like-minded parties and actors united by a progressive and forward-looking commitment to national unity and transformation, Fayemi was proud of the zeal with which the cadres in the South West embraced the party’s agenda for change and renewal when it was announced to them.

After reeling off some of the successes of the party, since it came on stream in 2015, he also dwelt on some of the current challenges that have either obstructed the party or thwarted some of her noble plans and as well stymied some of the gains registered.

“Not least among these challenges is the security situation in the country, a problem we inherited and which has continued to be a source of immense worry for all Nigerians, and rightly so. Understandably, the security question remains a topmost priority for President Tinubu.
“Added to this are adverse domestic pressures and external shocks on the economy that have exacerbated the cost of living, and affected our quest to massively dent unemployment, especially as it affects the teeming population of young people.

“We are also confronted with the task of stabilising the exchange rate of our national currency even as concerted efforts are being made to erode the parallel market, increase the capital budget in our national expenditure profile, and meet our various international obligations.
“These are not problems that are easy to tackle, especially as the roots of many of them date back to the locust years of the PDP, and resolving them requires time, patience, and understanding.

“It is correct that as the ruling party, we must confront them frontally without forgetting that we also owe a duty to explain our remedial and reform measures with all the empathy and humility that we can muster,” he explained.

Proud of the road the APC had traveled since it came into existence, Fayemi said, “We cannot afford to rest on our laurels as a party or be complacent about anything. It is imperative that we openly and honestly acknowledge current challenges and develop a coherent and comprehensive plan that can enable us to confront them.

“This we must do by resolutely learning lessons of experience. We should also be ready to mobilise ourselves for the urgent and necessary task of rebuilding the hope of our compatriots both in Project Nigeria and in our ability as a party committed to leading the charge against underdevelopment, disunity, and insecurity.

“Without being defensive or unduly apologetic, we must dig deep to find that combination of humility, a sense of public service, an uncommon courage, and a tenacity of purpose to drive a shared national vision. These qualities served us so well in 2015 to enable us to write an important new chapter in our national electoral history. They can and will serve us well again if we re-commit to them.”
Impressed by the thrust and turn-out at the gathering, President Tinubu, who said his eyes were set on the future generations and not future elections, capped the discussions in a presidential fashion.

The president explained that the reforms being undertaken by his administration might have exposed the party to widespread criticisms, but assured the APC faithful that the “tough” decisions would finally set the country on the path towards prosperity.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the president acknowledged the solidarity being shown to his government in the difficult moments and stressed that his focus was not on the next election, but on improving the lives of Nigerians and to hand over a prosperous country to the next generation.

“We acknowledge that our decisions have been tough, but they needed to be taken. The gains are at the end of the tunnel. That time will come when we will all be happy and thank our government for taking those decisions.
“Right now, I am not thinking of the next election but about the next generation. This is why we are implementing reforms that are long overdue. This is the hallmark of a true leader.”

Tinubu promised to give serious deliberations to the issues raised at the forum and further pledged to make the party more united to achieve its programmes.

A former governor of Ogun State, Chief SegunOsoba, declared that the South West must support Tinubu’s administration unequivocally, no matter the price to be paid.

Osoba warned that no matter the ill-feelings anyone might have against the person of the president or his administration, he must be supported not only to run out his first term in office but also to secure a second term.

The veteran journalist disclosed that Tinubu was the first president from the progressive fold and, therefore, could not afford to fail.
“We cannot and should not allow anyone to derail our democracy under Tinubu,” he insisted, adding that no money was left in the national treasury for subsidy when Tinubu took office.

South West Zonal chairman of the APC, Hon. Isaac Kekemeke, said the party stood with the president for his courage to address the malady in the country. He said the caucus meeting was a move to resolve intra party crises and disagreements tearing members apart.
On hispart, APC National Secretary, Senator AjibolaBasiru, said the caucus forum was sanctioned by the party national leadership to create a constant interface between elected members of the party and officials administering the affairs of the party.

He disclosed that similar meetings would be held in other regions in order to galvanise more support for APC and its government.
The idea was no doubt a good one and must be reviewed for sustainability. In fact, the next phase might be to start a similar gathering at the senatorial levels and gradually build up to the states before arriving at the regional level for an expanded and richer deliberation.

Much as the outing was generally adjudged successful by a majority of the people, who attended and those who observed from the outside, the ruling party must continue to speak the truth to itself and the government, away from the aspiration of seeking to hold on to power.

Unfortunately, for an idea that was well received across the South West and attended by all that matter in the region because of its originality and progressive intentions, Sanwo-Olu’s seemingly petty partners in the state assembly, led by the Speaker, Hon MudashiruObasa, boycotted the event. If this is not an obvious infantile disposition, what else could it be?

While the Lagos lawmakers allegedly claimed not to have received an invitation to the event, the state, on the other hand, was said to have record of the invitations extended to them with clarity of thoughts and agenda.

Expectedly, this is what usually happens when people undeserving of any offices at all find themselves in positions bigger than their dreams and intellectual credentials. They are unable to divorce politics from issues and real governance but quick to descend into the gutters at the slightest opportunity.

It is only hoped that this maiden South West Assembly would not end up a one-off exercise but a sustainable initiative that would help the party and region grow her politics and leadership.

PoliticsBeyond APC’s Flashes Of Many Colours - Thisdaylive by Blogsphere(op): 2:18pm On Oct 09, 2024
A lot currently rests on the shoulders of the South West geo-political zone, and her leadership is not oblivious of this fact. As a cosmopolitan region with some level of political sophistication, it is one part of the country that has always played a significant role in the nation’s rich political history.

Even more instructive at this time in the life of the nation, is that it is the zone, where the incumbent president, Bola Tinubu, comes from. It is, therefore, a delicate balance – managing her political relevance as well as her irrevocable support for one of her own – the President of Nigeria.

It was against this backdrop that last weekend’s regional assembly by the All Progressives Congress (APC) members secured its place in the new thinking for a better region and nation.

Stomping the meeting hall with flashes of bright colours that typified regional unity and cohesion, the South-west might have set a new agenda in party politics and management.

Chairman of the regional assembly for APC and Lagos State Governor, Mr. BabajideSanwo-Olu seemed to understand the weight of the assignment on his hands and did not disappoint anyone either. Incidentally, in his case, apart from coordinating activities of the region, he is also the governor of the president’s home state. This, though, makes his job interesting. It is certainly not an enviable one either.

But the Lagos governor seemed to be up to the task. The fact that he and his team could come up with an idea that suddenly birthed the somewhat reunion of the political leadership of the zone was not a mean feat.

Assembled in an expansive hall at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, were over 800 people. They ranged from local government administrators to state assembly members, their national assembly counterparts, governors, as well as all the former this and former that.
With evident nostalgia permeating the hall, typified by the near-endless banter from people, who had not seen one another in ages, and wrapped in many shades of beautiful colours, the gathering offered more than it was conceived for and indeed, worth the time of everyone.

“As a key part of the Nigerian State, the Southwest is blessed with immense potential to lead the country towards prosperity,” Sanwo-Olu stated as he began to welcome people to the gathering.

“I warmly welcome you to this significant gathering, where we come together as one family to explore ways to work more closely and effectively for the benefit of our people, our region, and our nation.

“Today presents an opportunity for us to share ideas and agree on strategies to take the Southwest to greater heights. We have abundant human and natural resources, exceptional creativity and intellectual strength, as well as a rich cultural heritage.

“These are the unique assets we can harness to move our region forward and give Nigeria a respected place in the global community,” he said.
According to him, “This meeting is not only an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a region but also to reignite hope and chart a course for a better Nigeria – one where poverty and lack are things of the past.

“As a people bound by common values of integrity and respect, we are in a unique position to change Nigeria’s fortunes. The Southwest has always been the heartbeat of this nation, recognised as the pacesetters in innovation and progress.”
To put this in context, he recalled that, “Our past leaders earned this pride of place through their visionary leadership. They built Africa’s first television station (WNTV), West Africa’s first skyscraper (Cocoa House), and Nigeria’s first stadium (Liberty Stadium), all through disciplined management and strategic investment in education and agriculture.

“They banished ignorance and poverty from our region, instilling values of integrity and respect, which gave rise to the ‘Omoluabi’ ethos – the hallmark of honesty and dignity that has shaped our identity.”

This was where it started to get interesting. The poser here: “So, where did we lose our way? At what point did farming become a job we looked down on? How did our land, once rich in opportunity, produce beggars despite its vast potential?

“How did our youth turn into street urchins, kidnappers, and fraudsters? The truth is, we have all fallen short. But today, we have the chance to address these failings, retrace our steps, and rebuild our values.”
Sanwo-Olu, without a doubt,  gave an amazing speech that soon set the pace for serious deliberations on the future of the region. The discussions began very quickly.

PoliticsPDP Chieftain Slams Governors For Silence On National Issues by Blogsphere(op): 1:10pm On Sep 17, 2024
Mr. Idemudia Osagie, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Oredo in Edo State, has criticized the party's governors for failing to address the country's pressing issues during the final campaign rally in Edo State over the weekend.

Osagie expressed disappointment that none of the PDP governors present at the rally spoke out on the current state of the nation, leaving the task to Senator Abba Moro, the Minority Leader of the Senate, and Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the party.

"This silence is deafening," Osagie lamented. "At a time when Nigerians are crying out for leadership and guidance, our governors chose to remain mute on the critical issues affecting our country."

The criticism raises questions about the PDP's commitment to addressing the nation's challenges and its ability to provide a viable opposition to the ruling party.

Osagie's comments suggest that the governors of the party may be out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Nigerians, similar to the APC-led federal government, which has been accused of being disconnected from the people's plight.

The Edo State campaign rally was seen as a crucial moment for the PDP to showcase its unity and vision for the country. However, Osagie's comments imply that the party's leadership may be failing to resonate with the masses.

Windfall Tax: Policy is a win-win for social good – Bismark Rewane

Renowned Economist and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited (FDC), Mr. Bismarck Rewane, hasthrown his weight behind the Windfall Tax on financial…

Renowned Economist and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company Limited (FDC), Mr. Bismarck Rewane, hasthrown his weight behind the Windfall Tax on financial institutions by the Federal Government, describing the policy as a win-win situation, and one aimed at fostering social good and entrenching equitable distribution of resources for Nigerians.

Windfall taxes are designed to capture extraordinary profits that arise from unexpected economic events. In Nigeria’s case, these profits have largely resulted from the recent naira devaluation, which has significantly benefited banks. Therefore, a nuanced understanding of this concept is critical to the overall conversations around the policy and its implementation.

He stated this during an on-air interview on the topic: ‘Understanding the Workings of the Windfall Tax Policy in Nigeria’,on ‘Business Nigeria’, a business and economy focused programme on TVC, on Wednesday August 28, 2024.

The Windfall Tax, Rewane said, “would come up with the concept of a joint venture where the government has part of it,and the private taxpayer has part of it. So, in all this model, everybody is in what I call a ‘win-win’ situation”.

The FDC CEO made references from his presentation titled: ‘Windfall Tax: Incentive or Penalty?’ noting that as citizens, the government wants you to have a say in how the tax is spent and administered. “So, we want a swap. Rather than pay us cash tax, we give you a road to zero, right? And that road is ours. We build it and people will see it and we get quite a good capital out of it. We get economic capital, and everybody sees it as part of your social responsibility. You would have an asset with benefits for people.”

Rewane pointed out that traditionally, government activities are funded by taxes and other forms of revenue including levies, rates, and others, and “this factor in companies or sectors making extraordinary income. The higher the tax revenue, the greater the ability of the government to fund its goals and its activities for social good”.

According to him, there are four elements that constitute a nation’s GDP, namely: government expenditure, investments, consumer income or aggregate consumption, and net exports. In the same way, he said, taxes are subject to four principles. Firstly,a tax must generate revenue. Secondly, it must be easy to administer, must be neutral, and must be equitable.

Rewane argued that the Windfall Tax policy buttresses the Robin Hood philosophy of the rich paying more than the poor or the socio-economically vulnerable. “Assets provides an impetus for growth. The assets belong to the government. But it is funded on the profits of the taxpayer. But the most interesting alternative is to have the asset belong to the taxpayer”, he said.

Rewane pointed out thatthe windfall tax is not a Nigeria-specific tax policy, but one that has been adopted by many other nations. He cited the examples of countries like the United Kingdom which had a 35% windfall tax on oil and gas companies in 2022, and Portugal which had 13% windfall tax on energy companies and food retailers to reduce inflation and boost renewable energy investment.Czech Republicon their part used 60%of its Windfall Tax to subsidize energy costsand support social assistance programmes, whileGermany channelled 90% of its tax with proceeds to support people by putting a break on energy tariffs.

Rewane explains that Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio is currently 9.4 percent, lower than that of Ghana (12.3 percent) and South Africa (26 percent). This discrepancy is partly due to a lack of confidence in the government’s ability to deploy tax revenues effectively. He argues that if taxpayers believe their money is being well-spent on public goods and services, they are more likely to comply with tax policies.

According to Rewane, the discussion around the windfall taxes falls within the broader context of Nigeria’s economic goals. The government aims to achieve a one trillion-dollar economy by 2028, with an average growth rate of 5 to 6 percent. To reach these targets, it is essential to balance revenue generation with investment and consumption, ensuring that all elements of the economy are working together to drive growth.

Rewane urged for more understanding on the part of the citizens and organised private sector, saying thatthe government, by its mandate, has a major role to play in the economic development of the country and is not oblivious of the fact that some people are making extraordinary gains and that these gains need to be distributedevenly for common social good.

“Our concern here should be: How can we make this more efficient, so it becomes a win-win?The government wins, the people win, and the taxpayer being the public entity that made the primary profit also wins”, he said.

A critical aspect of Rewane’s argument is the importance of trust between the government and taxpayers. He asserts that for any tax policy to be effective, there must be a perception that the revenue collected is being used efficiently and transparently. This is especially true in Nigeria, where public skepticism about government spending is high.

The revered economist also spoke on the responsibilities and expectations of institutions to taxes, saying, “We have a moral and social responsibility to pay our taxes, but thatdoes not include exploitation or extortion. We don’t want that to happen. The greatest incentive for people to pay taxes is that people can see that the taxes they have paid has turned into material benefits for them. They can see the roads, they can feel the power supply, they can see the water, and they can see it’s for social good. So, that’s the litmus test for getting people to pay tax”.

Customs records 12 Convictions for over 20,000kg of Endangered Species intercepted in 3yrs

The Special Wildlife Office of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), on Tuesday, disclosed that it has intercepted about 20,000 kilograms of illegal wildlife products and live specimens on the verge of being smuggled out of the country by criminals in the last 3years

Speaking at the second edition of the Cooperation meeting between the service and the Wildlife Justice Commission, the Officer in charge, NCS Special Wildlife Office, Abimbola Isafiade, stated that her office has so far secured 12 convictions on illegal wildlife cases and still counting

According to Abim, as she is fondly called, before now, the service recorded no prosecution on the arrest of Illegal Wildlife cases. However, since the creation of the office, Nigeria has taken center stage in the fight against wildlife crime and trafficking of endangered species.

She said, "In kilograms, we have seized about 20,000 kilograms of illegal wildlife products with live endangered species, and it is not just about the arrest but the fact that we are going ahead to prosecute these cases and have 12 convictions within three years with many cases pending before the court. From zero to 12 is remarkable and the best step in the right direction. Before 2021, we had zero convictions on Wildlife trafficking from Nigeria, but now, we have 12, which is commendable!

"It's a major shift, based on the commitment by NCS in developing the capacity of its officers. It is a huge investment which is yielding these visible results". And it shows that we are committed to the global cause. Hence, we are collaborating with other agencies in this fight because no agency can do it alone. Without all these efforts, we probably won't be here talking about achievements today. So it is a huge success," for which NCS, particularly the management and prosecutors, should be commended

She further stated that apart from the 12 convictions recorded, there are a series of ongoing court cases awaiting final judgment

"As of today, apart from the 12 convictions, we have a series of ongoing court cases. I'm sure we would secure convictions with stiffer penalties, with the Nigeria Customs Service Act and inclusion of financial crime investigation in NCS Illegal Wildlife cases, she said.

Also speaking on the Partnership with NCS, the Attachee of the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Brian Geourgous, reiterated that the US government supports and pledges its commitment to Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) through training, provision of equipment, and other areas of needs to fight Wildlife Crime.

"Well, the U.S. government will focus on assisting Nigeria Customs Service the best way we can in some of these border areas that may be porous and may be seeing an influx of wildlife-related products undeclared.

"I think that the Nigeria Customs Service is doing a great job. We're here to assist and to implement some training and some other areas where we feel we may be able to help NCS do a little bit better. Over the last several years, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has made great strides in international investigations, which is one of the reasons that I'm here. And that's an area where we can assist Nigeria Customs Service," he stated.

He, however, commended the service for their effort in combatting wildlife smuggling, thereby calling for improvement in strategies.

Right now, we are going to start implementing some of the strategies that you and I have talked about. We are at the point now where we will stop talking so much and start doing more.

Like any agency around the world, whether in Nigeria or the United States of America, we have to adapt and change with the criminal elements. They change, and we also need to change. So, as government agents, we need to learn and adapt to overcome, and that's part of the reason that I am here to assist," he stated.a

Press Release

Work in Progress: Why Nigerians Should Support President Tinubu - Metuh

In the past eight years (May 2015 to May 2023) a vast majority of Nigerians lost hope and faith in the Nigerian project giving the deep damage done to the psyche of citizens, the economy, national unity and the practice of democracy in our country.
A lot of people were sceptical about the direction the nation was headed, giving the deep social wounds and the devastation done on every fabric of our nationhood.

Within those years, we witnessed a country where serving in government or belonging to the ruling party conferred immunity on individuals. This resulted in unimaginable impunities and the wanton desecration of national values, wealth, and resources. Those in opposition were humiliated, degraded, and persecuted with the massive might of the state.

However, in the last seven months, under the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, there is renewed confidence in the Nigerian project, especially in observing best democratic practices. This government definitely appears to have regard for the liberty and freedom of individuals as well as for transparency and accountability.

The most reassuring step is the genuine, determined and uncompromising fight against corruption and financial crimes in the country, different and distinct from a fight targeted at opposition figures whilst protecting and sparing those on the corridors of powers.
Today, we see serving ministers and people who are holding top offices being removed from office and investigated for prosecution over corruption and financial crimes.

In the past, the fight against corruption was merely a political cum campaign tool fueled with massive media trials and only targeted at diminishing opposition shinning talents. The fight against corruption is now distinctive to persons who have questions to answer and not a tool for persecution.

More importantly, there is no more demarketing of Nigerians and Nigeria as a nation by those who tagged our hardworking youth as lazy and tarred innocent and resourceful Nigerians on the international arena with the brush of corruption.

Nigerians across board, have applauded the unprecedented patriotic stand for good governance in cutting the cost of governance at the federal level reflected in the recent slashing of all official entourage to state and international events by 60 per cent.

President Tinubu has demonstrated proactive leadership; a listening and approachable leadership that respects the sensibilities of Nigerians as well as the need to re-engineer our nation for greater multi-sectoral productivity.

This uncommon patriotism requires the recognition and support of all well-meaning Nigerians within the public, private and civil society sectors irrespective of political, ethnic, religious or vocational affiliations.

From that standpoint, I call on all Nigerians to set aside every sectional, political and religious sentiments and put the national interest first by supporting President Tinubu bearing in mind that his success is the nation's success today and for generations yet unborn.

Nigeria’s future is much better served by contributions, inputs and constructive criticisms as obligations and duties of responsible citizens in every participatory democracy.

Finally, it is evident that there is a sure and steady move to where we want to be as a nation. This government indeed, is reflective of a good work in progress.

May God perfect our prayers for a great nation.

Chief Olisa Metuh

PoliticsAPC Rep Member, Dekeri Declares For Edo Governorship, Slams Obaseki by Blogsphere(op): 4:21pm On Jan 11, 2024
The member representing Etsako Federal Constituency, Hon. Anamero Dekeri, has officially joined the Edo State governorship race.

Dekeri, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), however, slammed Governor Godwin Obaseki, insisting that his administration had failed to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

The federal lawmaker, who seeks to emerge as the APC’s governorship candidate on February 17, said this at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.

“I stand before you with a sense of purpose and determination. My name is Honourable Anamero Dekeri, and I am honored to declare my sincere interest in seeking the APC ticket for the Edo 2024 governorship election,” he said.

Assessing Obaseki's PDP-led administration, Dekeri stated, "Even the blind can see that the government of the state led by Godwin Obaseki is an abysmal failure. People are suffering, people are dying. Basic infrastructures have collapsed. The industries to employ our teeming population are no longer there, all sectors are in bad shape.”

Dekeri also faulted those demanding that the next governor of Edo State should be from Edo Central senatorial district.

He said zoning breeds incompetence, adding that the right competencies and skills should be considered.

"It is time Nigeria began to see beyond the leadership of turn by turn because, in my view, zoning breeds incompetence. And once an individual has a sense of entitlement, it could bring out the worst from that human. So we should be looking at a state where we choose leaders on the strength of their competence to lead. Let us dump the turn-by-turn politics, he said.

The lawmaker noted that in terms of population, the central senatorial district has the least number of voters among the three senatorial districts, because it's about 12% of the voting population of the state. They have produced two consecutive governors.

“Edo North, where I come from, has the second largest population in the state, with about 36% of the state population. We have only been privileged to produce a governor in the person of Comrade Adams Oshiohomole

"On the issue of zoning, the APC as a party in Edo State is not the ruling party. You can only give what you have, we are looking at how we will wrest power from this Obaseki-led leadership that is bereft of ideas that the state is subject to. We should have the power first before talking about zoning,” he maintained.

The lawyer, who describes himself as a philanthropist, said all through his career, he had championed education, economic empowerment, and social justice.

Dekeri added that his leadership style is dynamic, focusing on the needs of the people and ensuring that every policy decision aligns with the principles of fairness, justice, and equity.

“My vision for Edo State is one of progress, prosperity, and pride. I aspire to create an environment where every child has access to quality education, the youth are equipped with skills for the future, and our industries flourish, generating employment and driving economic growth” said the lawmaker.

Dekeri added that he seeks to build a state that exemplifies good governance, with the welfare of the people at the forefront of every decision

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed the Edo governorship poll for September 21, 2024.

PoliticsTajudeen Abbas: Gbajabiamila’s Record In National Assembly Can’t Be Matched by Blogsphere(op): 8:02am On Jan 04, 2024
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas, says the record of his predecessor, Rt.Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, in the area of legislation and infrastructure is unlikely to be matched.

Abbas said this during the inauguration of a 484-bed hall of residence at the University of Lagos which was christened the Femi Gbajabiamila Hall.

The Speaker said Gbajabiamila, who served 20 years in the House of Representatives before he was appointed chief of staff to the President, was an asset not just to the people of Surulere but to the nation’s apex legislative body.

“I don’t see in this generation any lawmaker that can do as much as Femi Gbajabiamila did for the Nigerian people. I don’t see that person. I say that with all sense of sincerity and honesty. This is a man who has been a high flier from day one for the past 20 years. He was at the helm of leadership at the National Assembly an unprecedented 20 years of service to humanity,” said Abbas.

He said Gbajabiamila who served as minority whip, minority leader, majority leader and then Speaker until last year had left shoes that would be difficult to fill by any politician.

“I can’t see anyone from the past to the present who can match these achievements. He is a rare person and I am sure there might not be too many people like him in this generation but it is our prayer that the future should eliminate the good examples he set in the National Assembly,” the Speaker added.

Abbas, who inaugurated four other projects which were sponsored by Gbajabiamila including the National Open University of Nigeria Surulere Campus, the rehabilitated Randle Street, the refurbished Bode Thomas Police Station and the Femi Gbajabiamila Mini Stadium, Orile; publicly endorsed the candidacy of Fuad Laguda, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

The Speaker said he was confident that the many projects sponsored by Gbajabiamila would convince the people of Surulere Constituency 1 to vote for Laguda in next month’s by-election which is being conducted to fill the vacant seat left by Gbajabiamila upon his assumption of office as chief of staff to the President last June.

In his remarks, Gbajabiamila said he felt the need to sponsor the 484-bed hall at the University of Lagos because there was an accommodation deficit at the school.

The President’s chief of staff, who is an alumnus of the University of Lagos, said lack of accommodation could also affect the performance of students hence the need to construct a new hall of residence. Also explaining his reason for constructing a mini stadium at Orile, he said it had become necessary in order to keep the youths busy as an idle hand is the devil’s workshop.

Gbajabiamila said he was hopeful that all the projects that were inaugurated including the Surulere Campus of the Open University, would inspire youths to greatness even as he called on youths to immediately apply for admission into the school.

The former Speaker, who noted that he had influenced the completion of over 250 projects in Lagos and beyond, said he was hopeful that the newly inaugurated projects would be properly maintained.

In her remarks the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folashade Ogunshola, said the new hostel would help ameliorate the school’s accommodation challenge.

Ogunshola said her predecessor, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, was the one who approached Gbajabiamila while he was Speaker to kindly assist the school to expand its student accommodation. She said the school was proud of Gbajabiamila as its alumnus but said the institution would still need assistance from the Federal Government to upgrade some of its facilities.
