The Nigerian community in South Africa has been given the cause to mourn after two of their members were shot dead by unknown gunmen recently. A statement by the President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA), Adetola Olubajo gave the names of the deceased Nigerians as Mr Okechukwu Chukwumezeriri and Mr Olushola Ayanleye. Olubajo said that Chukwumezeriri, 39, from Imo was shot dead on a football field on August 25th at Rietondale Park in Pretoria while Ayanleye, 42, from Ondo State was shot dead in the night of August 26th at Essellen Street, Sunnyside in Pretoria. “Information gathered revealed that last weekend’s violence which claimed two lives with another two hospitalised in Pretoria were gang-related killings. As the umbrella organisation of Nigerians in South Africa, our stand is that whoever that kills should face the full wrath of the law, irrespective of his or her nationality.” He said the Nigerian association was currently cooperating with law enforcement agencies in South Africa to tackle the criminal elements. “We advise that whoever has information about these killers should kindly contact the president of NUSA or the police as these senseless and trigger happy fellows should not go unpunished.” The latest deaths have increased the death toll of Nigerians in South to 122 in 30 months cc: Lalasticlala Source: https://www.jeniffasblog.com/2018/09/02/two-nigerians-shot-dead-in-latest-killings-in-south-africa/

peptic ulcer is caused when there is inconsistency on the mucosal lining of the intestine resulting to sores on the walls of the intestine. most times we cause this our selves without knowing, of cause welcome to Nigeria where people eat everything they see just to belly full and go about their routine works. Here in Nigeria, ulcer is commonly found within students, and some public servants who have no much chances to eat and rest as much activities they engage in daily, while for the students is as a result of financial breakdown, many students engage on the intake of soaked white garri which in the other hand irritate the walls of the intestine, if it does not soak enough water here i will be discusing the 5 top habits that causes ulcer we engage daily here in Nigeria 1.excessive intake of irritants: irritants like spices we use to cook food. most people add alot of these spices to add taste to their meals, without knowing such much spices causes inconsistency without your notice to the walls of your intestine 2.excessive drinking of alcohol beverages: I made a post about drinking of alcohol recently on it causes cancer. alcohol makes some people uncomfortable as some people suppress their feelings. excessive alcohol irritates the wall of the intestine while it waits for assimilation, there by causing inconsistency and injuries to the lining of the intestine inform of spores. 3.not dieting well/starving: a whole lot of people starve to curtail their spending but not knowing they harm more of them selves than they save money. starving causes the weakness of the lining of the intestine and this makes it more vulnerable to ulcer. 4.not enough rest: We are already in an uncomfortable society where you naturaly get stressed even while at home, we forget to plan well and take enough rest to curtail stress. stress increases blood flow and increases adrenaline flow, causing another problem to the intestine. 5.lifestyle: smoking, and many other mutual lifestyle we live determine how our system works, how healthy and how damaged it posses, so we should try to maintain necessary lifestyle to avoid ulcer. in my next post, i will discuss the prevention and treatment of ulcer. The dental team is made up of different teams which makes the work of dentistry more effective and efficient since there is fine division of labor between the team mates. But at some extents, some team mates do not know their boundary in the field of the dental work and as such dive into the sphere of other senior team members by doing the work mapped out for a specified team members. This became a problem in the profession and have resulted to the effective and clear mapping out duties and scope of practice of each team members. previously i have researched and made a comprehensive post about the scope of practice for the dental therapy, read it here: scope of practice for the dental therapy Here I will write about the dental nursing as I have written about the dental therapists in relation to the dentists. You can read that, i posted the link up Dental nursing is a team of dentistry that are charged with responsibility of providing an assistance to the dental surgeons and the dental therapists. There Scope of practice of Dental Nurses include but not limited to Sterilization of dental instruments Setting of dental instruments and materials before health care procedures Assists in placing of saliva sucture for patients with excessive flow of saliva and cannot control them. Helps in medicament preparation. They also help to clark pateints for minor dental health care problems. They are to administer antiobiotics for some procedures that requires the use of antibiotic before it. And many assisting works, here is a comprehensive list of their duties as the board specified, and thus team mates are not to step into others work to avoid embarrassments and quarrels in the field of practice. source: https://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/07/27/scope-of-practice-of-dental-nurses-by-registration/ lalasticlala

EALTH INSURANCE IN NIGERIA IS DEAD Practically, no body in Nigeria truly cares if you are alive or dead, only your loved ones do so, daily hundreds of lives are lost in Nigeria, Doctors are not well paid and so goes on strike to achieve their aim at the detriment of the poor masses, we need to be heard, lives are taken unserious while looting and corruption have taken the order of the day in Nigeria, politician travels out of the country routinely for medical check ups, leaving the poor masses who get them into the position in mess as they have no option than to strive to survive in a poor health facilities. BREAKDOWN In Nigeria we have the health insurance program which generates billions of Naira yearly and barely 40 % of that finance is being spent, the truth is that many Nigerians are not aware of the policy and its offer, why? Because there is no much publicity and education of the people about the insurance, people do not go to hospital because of the fear of the financial aspect, meanwhile we have health insurance policy that could help in financing your hospital bills, but many do not know. Thus many involve in self medication which is very detrimental and haves negative impacts on the lives of people Again, the health insurance polices as it is said to be only have specific hospitals that offers then, most equipped privatized health facilities do not treat patients on health insurance, it is mostly does governmental health facilities without equipment and interest of the patients that are imbibed to observe the health insurance policy. It is in Nigeria that you meet nurses that shouts to their patients, health practitioners that kill some patients with some negative comments and treats.. some times I sit down and wonder the kind of things happening, can we ever get better? With the increasing population and more needs keep arising. These are sector we boarder less about because you have no been sick. People complain more about the power and transport sector, but look closely on other sectors, we are serious behind the world, other countries are far far ahead of us, we cant just fold our hands and watch, no way, please we have to voice out, PVC does no such things, let our voice be heard. Share this post to save live. the united nations should come to our aid, Nigeria is seriously going down. source: https://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/07/25/health-insurance-in-nigeria-is-dead-nigerians-dies-daily/ lalasticlala

i know a lot of posts have talked about sugar intake and its unhealthy effects, but i want to list a clear effects of sugar, especially when consumed too much, here are numbered effects of sugar, share to your family. 1. Sugar causes blood glucose to spike and plummet. Unstable blood sugar often leads to mood swings, fatigue, and cravings for more sugar Cravings set the stage for a cycle of addiction in which every new hit of sugar makes you feel better temporarily but, a few hours later, results in more cravings and hunger. On the flip side, those who avoid sugar often report having little or no cravings for sugary things and feeling emotionally balanced and energized. 2. Sugar increases the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Large-scale studies have shown that the more high-glycemic foods (those that quickly affect blood sugar), including foods containing sugar, a person consumes, the higher his risk for becoming obese and for developing diabetes and heart disease. Emerging research is also suggesting connections between high-glycemic diets and many different forms of cancer 3. Sugar interferes with immune function. Research on human subjects is scant, but animal studies have shown that sugar suppresses immune response. More research is needed to understand the exact mechanisms; however, we do know that bacteria and yeast feed on sugar and that, when these organisms get out of balance in the body, infections and illness are more likely. 4. A high-sugar diet often results in chromium deficiency. If you consume a lot of sugar and other refined carbohydrates, you probably don’t get enough of the trace mineral chromium, and one of chromium’s main functions is to help regulate blood sugar. Scientists estimate that 90 percent of Americans don’t get enough chromium. Chromium is found in a variety of animal foods, seafood and plant foods. Refining starches and other carbohydrates rob these foods of their chromium supplies. 5. Sugar accelerates aging. It even contributes to that telltale sign of aging: sagging skin. Some of the sugar you consume, after hitting your bloodstream, ends up attaching itself to proteins, in a process called glycation. These new molecular structures contribute to the loss of elasticity found in aging body tissues, from your skin to your organs and arteries. The more sugar circulating in your blood, the faster this damage takes hold. 6. Sugar causes tooth decay. With all the other life-threatening effects of sugar, we sometimes forget the most basic damage it does. In one of my posts, i made mention some dental mistakes to avoid, and this was mentioned there. When it sits on your teeth, it creates decay more efficiently than any other food substance. For a strong visual reminder, next time the Tooth Fairy visits, try the old tooth-in-a-glass-of-Coke experiment—the results will surely convince you that sugar isn’t good for your pearly whites. 7. Sugar can cause gum disease, which can lead to heart disease. Increasing evidence shows that chronic infections, such as those that result from periodontal problems, play a role in the development of coronary artery disease. The most popular theory is that the connection is related to widespread effects from the body’s inflammatory response to infection. 8. Sugar affects behavior and cognition in children. Though it has been confirmed by millions of parents, most researchers have not been able to show the effect of sugar on children’s behavior. A possible problem with the research is that most of it compared the effects of a sugar-sweetened drink to one containing an artificial sweetener. It may be that kids react to both real sugar and sugar substitutes, therefore showing no differences in behavior. 9. Sugar increases stress. When we’re under stress, our stress hormone levels rise; these chemicals are the body’s fight-or-flight emergency crew, sent out to prepare the body for an attack or an escape. These chemicals are also called into action when blood sugar is low. For example, after a blood-sugar spike (say, from eating a piece of birthday cake), there’s a compensatory dive, which causes the body to release stress hormones such as adrenaline, epinephrine and cortisol. One of the main things these hormones do is raise blood sugar, providing the body with a quick energy boost. The problem is, these helpful hormones can make us feel anxious, irritable and shaky. 10. Sugar takes the place of important nutrients. people who consume the most sugar have the lowest intakes of essential nutrients––especially vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B-12, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and iron. Ironically, those who consume the most sugar are children and teenagers, the individuals who need these nutrients most. Slashing Sugar Now that you know the negative impacts refined sugar can have on your body and mind, you’ll want to be more careful about the foods you choose. And the first step is getting educated about where sugar lurks—believe it or not, a food needn’t even taste all that sweet for it to be loaded with sugar. When it comes to convenience and packaged foods, let the ingredients label be your guide, and be aware that just because something boasts that it is low in carbs or a “diet” food, doesn’t mean it’s free of sugar. source: http://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/01/16/10-bad-effects-of-too-much-sugar-intake-you-should-know/ cc: lalasticlala |

Cashews have a buttery, sweet, and salty taste, an unmistakable shape, and they are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. They grow on cashew nut trees. Many of us eat cashews after they have been roasted and salted, which turns them into a delicious snack. Nutrition Facts Cashews, Raw, 1 ounce Amount Calories 155 calories Carbohydrates 9.2 g Protein 5.1 g Vitamin E 0.3 mg Vitamin K 9.5 mcg Vitamin B6 0.1 mg Calcium 10.4 mg Sodium 3.4 mg What Are the Health Benefits of Cashew nuts? Although cashews are one of the lowest-fiber nuts, they are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These include vitamins E, K, and B6, along with minerals like copper, phosphorus, zinc, magnesium, iron, and selenium, all of which are important for maintaining good bodily function. Heart Health Research shows that eating more nuts, such as cashews, can lower your risk for cardiovascular disease. This may occur by reducing blood pressure and “bad” cholesterol levels. Nuts are naturally cholesterol-free and contain good amounts of heart-healthy fats, fiber, and protein. They also contain arginine, which protects the inner lining of artery walls. Other vitamins and minerals in nuts, like potassium, vitamins E and B6, and folic acid, also help to fight heart disease. Blood Health The copper and iron in cashews work together to help the body form and utilize red blood cells. This in turn keeps blood vessels, nerves, the immune system, and bones healthy and functioning properly. Eye Health We’ve all heard that carrots are good for your eyes, but it might come as a surprise that cashews are too! They contain high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, which act as antioxidants when consumed regularly. These compounds protect the eyes from light damage (which can turn into blindness in the elderly), and can even help decrease the instance of cataracts. Weight Loss According to research, two servings of nuts a day is helpful in fighting against cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Replacing animal fats and proteins with the mono-and polyunsaturated fats found in cashews is an excellent way to manage your weight and reduce the build-up of fat and cholesterol in the heart. What About the Fat? Cashews contain a lot of vitamins and nutrients, but they also contain a lot of fat. The good news is that these fats are mostly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. When substituted for saturated fats and eaten in moderation, mono- and polyunsaturated fats can help improve heart disease as well as reduce the risk for stroke and prevent weight gain. Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats also contribute vitamin E to the diet. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that is great for promoting positive cell growth and overall health in the human body. The Takeaway Consumption of cashews has been linked to cancer prevention, heart health, and weight maintenance. Cashews make a great replacement for animal fats and proteins, and their delicious flavor makes them a satisfying snack. Without a doubt, cashews are a versatile and healthy food, unique among other nuts and packed with the vitamins and nutrients essential to good health. The next time you can, grab a handful of cashews and enjoy the benefits of this amazing nut! source: http://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/05/25/important-health-benefits-of-cashew-nuts/

Asthma is a common lung condition that causes occasional breathing difficulties. It affects people of all ages and often starts in childhood, although it can also appear for the first time in adults. There’s currently no cure for asthma, but there are simple treatments that can help keep the symptoms under control so it doesn’t have a significant impact on your life. Some people, particularly children, may eventually grow out of asthma. But for others it’s a lifelong condition. Early Symptoms of asthma The main symptoms of asthma are: -wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing) -breathlessness -a tight chest – which may feel like a band is tightening around it -coughing The severity of the symptoms varies from person to person. They usually come and go, but for some people they’re more persistent. Asthma symptoms can sometimes get temporarily worse. This is known as an asthma attack. When to get medical advice Several conditions can cause similar Early symptoms of Asthma, such as a chest infection or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), so it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and correct treatment. Your doctor will usually be able to diagnose asthma by asking about your or your child’s symptoms and carrying out some simple breathing tests. But these are often difficult to do in infants and young children, so the diagnosis may be made on the basis of symptoms and response to a trial of treatment with an inhaler. Causes of asthma Asthma is caused by inflammation (swelling) of the breathing tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. This inflammation makes the breathing tubes highly sensitive, so they temporarily become narrow. This may occur randomly, or after exposure to a trigger. The tubes may also sometimes become clogged with sticky mucus. Common asthma triggers include: -allergens, such as house dust mites, animal fur and pollens -other irritants, such as cigarette smoke, strong smells, gases and -cold air -exercise (including marathon sex) -chest infections The reason why some people develop asthma isn’t fully understood, although it’s known that you’re more likely to develop it if you have a close relative with the condition. Treatments for asthma While there’s currently no cure for asthma, there are a number of treatments that can help control the condition. Most asthma treatments are taken using an inhaler, a small device that delivers a spray or powder medicine to your breathing tubes as you breathe in. The main treatments are: -identifying and avoiding asthma triggers if possible -reliever inhalers – inhalers used when needed to quickly relieve asthma symptoms for a short time -preventer inhalers – inhalers used regularly every day to reduce the inflammation in the breathing tubes, which prevents asthma symptoms occurring You’ll usually draw up a personal action plan with your doctor or asthma nurse. This will include information about your medicines, how to monitor your condition and what to do if you have an asthma attack. How long does asthma last? Asthma is a long-term condition for many people – particularly if it first develops in adulthood. In children, it sometimes disappears or improves during the teenage years, although it can return later in life. The symptoms can usually be controlled with treatment and most people will have normal and active lives, although some people with more severe asthma may have persistent problems. Complications of asthma Although asthma can normally be kept under control, it’s still a serious condition that can cause a number of complications. This is why it’s so important to follow your treatment plan and not ignore your symptoms if they’re getting worse. Badly controlled asthma can cause issues such as: -persistent tiredness -underperformance or absence from work or school -psychological problems – including stress, anxiety and depression -disruption of your work and leisure because of unexpected visits to your doctor or hospital -lung infections (pneumonia) -in children, delays in growth or puberty -There’s also a risk of life-threatening complications, such as severe asthma attacks. source:http://generalhealthinfo.com/2017/11/07/asthma-in-detail/ |
Fake Health News you should Stop Believing Thousands of well-educated people share such erroneous beliefs about some medical news that are really wrong, here are some myths that are truly and scientifically proven wrong. Just like in my last post, i talked about how scientists discovers a new human tissue and organ and the new name, these are modern medical developments which we all have to update our selves with, medical doctors are not God, when they know that you are well informed, they will give you the best treatment. This believes/myths include Myth 1: A Low-Fat Diet Will Prevent Heart Disease The Origin In the 1940s, heart disease was the top killer in the world. To identify the causes, many studies were launched, including the landmark Framingham Heart Study and the Seven Countries Study. The latter examined risk factors across cultures and linked diets high in saturated fat to heart disease. The American Heart Association endorsed the findings and sounded the alarm on saturated fat. Companies responded with low-fat processed foods. Belief in the heart-healthy benefits of a low-fat diet still persists today, even though heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the nation. The Truth Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent trying to replicate the Seven Countries finding, without success. In fact, the study’s methodology has come into question. In November, new research in The Lancet spanning 18 countries across five continents concluded that “total fats and types of fat were not associated with cardiovascular disease.” Ironically, reaction to that original flawed science turned out to be the real killer. Since low-fat food is bland, food producers added sugar. We now know that sugar is extremely harmful to health. According to a 2014 JAMA Internal Medicine study, people who get 25 percent or more of their daily calories from added sugar are more than twice as likely to die of heart disease as those who get 10 percent or less. And that’s regardless of age, sex, physical activity, and body mass index. Myth 3: PSA Screening for Younger Men Saves Lives The Origin Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, and it’s second only to lung cancer in deadliness. PSA stands for “prostate-specific antigen,” and the test measures blood levels of this protein; a high number can suggest prostate cancer. In 1994, the FDA approved routine PSA screening for asymptomatic men. Since it’s such a simple, noninvasive way to apparently detect a dreaded disease, physicians prescribe and patients request an estimated 20 million PSA tests annually. The Truth Mass PSA screening does more harm than good. even the doctor who discovered PSA called large-scale testing a “profit-driven public health disaster.” In 2012, Preventive Services Task Force advised against routine testing, citing evidence that about 80 percent of results are false positives. Unnecessary treatments can include painful biopsies, surgery, and radiotherapy. Experts estimate that up to five of every 1,000 men who undergo prostate cancer surgery die within a month, and at least 200 of every 1,000 men who have radiotherapy and surgery for prostate cancer suffer complications like urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and/or bowel problems. The Urological Association no longer recommends routine PSA screening for men younger than 55 unless they have risk factors (like smoking, being overweight, or having a family history of prostate cancer). you can also check on my profile for detailed analysis of prostate cancer, causes and possible prevention Myth 4: Raw Milk Is Healthier Than Pasteurized The Origin It’s difficult to pinpoint when or where this idea started, but the raw milk movement has been gaining momentum, in Nigeria, northern states now permit sales of raw milk in stores, and more allow it to be sold on the farm where it was produced. Pasteurization involves heating milk to kill harmful bacteria, but raw milk proponents claim the heat also kills important nutrients and that consuming pasteurized dairy products causes allergic reactions and symptoms of lactose intolerance. The Truth The FDA says no there’s evidence that raw milk is any more beneficial than the pasteurized stuff. In fact, the opposite is true: While unpasteurized dairy products such as milk and cheese are consumed by a little more than 3 percent of the population, they cause 96 percent of the illnesses originating from contaminated dairy products, according to the CDC. That’s 840 times more illness and 45 times more hospitalization than from pasteurized dairy products. Infection from harmful bacteria in raw milk (like salmonella, E. coli, and listeria) can result in organ failure, miscarriage, paralysis, or death. Myth 5: For Lower-Back Pain, Spinal Fusion Is Best The Origin The vertebrae lining your backbone are cushioned by shock-absorbing discs. Over time, disc damage leads to micromovements that can trigger pain. Also, spinal nerves can be pinched, resulting in radiating leg pain. On an X-ray, CT scan, or MRI, the narrowing of space between vertebrae is often interpreted as disc degeneration and the source of pain. It would seem logical, then, that fusing vertebrae and/or removing bone would limit micromovements, make space for nerves, and ease the ache. This thinking led to a 70 percent spike in such surgeries from 2001 to 2011. About 400,000 annually. The Truth A recent study determined that up to 40 percent of people who undergo back surgery could continue to have significant pain afterward. Plus, rates of complication from such operations — some life-threatening — can be upwards of 20 percent. In fact, even with today’s medical advances, finding the cause of lower-back pain is very difficult. About 85 percent is the “nonspecific” type–no cause–and surgery is typically not the best option for these cases. In 2017, the American College of Physicians published new guidelines, recommending that doctors choose non-pharmacologic, nonsurgical options, such as exercise, physical therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy, to treat both acute and chronic lower-back pain. for more please visit source source: http://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/05/17/fake-health-news-you-should-stop-believing/ cc: lalasticlala |
The New Human organ is called the interstitium, and cushions and protects the body’s other organs Our bodies are full of dozens of organs, all performing unique and specialized tasks. Now, new research have discovered one more: the interstitium, a fluid-filled membrane beneath our skin that cushions and protects the other organs inside our bodies. The researchers were studying tissue in some patients’ bile ducts when they noticed some strange pattern in the tissue surrounding the ducts. They weren’t sure exactly what that tissue was, so they decided to study it more. Examining tissue all over the body, they kept finding these same weirdly patterned tissues. The researchers explored further by flash freezing some of these tissues and looking at them under a microscope. They found that these weird tissues were made of strong webs of protein surrounding large sacs of fluid, and they could be found nearly everywhere in the body. The scientists believe that these tissues are part of a new organ, that they’ve dubbed the interstitium. The researchers suspect that the interstitium is a form of ‘shock absorber’ for our organs, cushioning them from impacts and allowing them to expand and contract. The fluid contained inside the tissue could also play all kinds of unknown roles. So how did such a big organ stay undiscovered for so long? Primarily, it has to do with how scientists study biological tissue. In the past, when researchers would collect samples of the tissue to study, they would cut it with a scalpel, which would damage the tissue and drain the fluid. When the scientists would look at that damaged tissue, all they’d see is the dense fibers. In this case, however, the researchers were using a new piece of equipment called Probe-based Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy (PCLE), which lets them look at internal tissues directly without cutting or damaging them. Using this technology, the researchers could pick up the telltale patterns more clearly. So is the interstitium our newest organ? Probably, but it’s not easy to just declare a part of the body a new organ. There’s a lot more research that has to be done, including confirming how extensive the interstitium is and exactly what it does. But with a little more study, the interstitium might officially become our 80th organ sometime soon. we are expecting updates in the different anatomy and biology text books as regards this development and discovery source:http://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/05/14/scientists-discover-what-seems-to-be-a-brand-new-human-organ/ cc: lalasticlala

many people do not know about colon cancer (also know as colorectal cancer), and in this post, i will talk bout the causes of colon cancer and symptoms as well as prevention. colorectal/colon cancer is not contagious (a person cannot catch the disease from a cancer patient). Some people are more likely to develop colorectal cancer than others. Factors that increase a person’s risk of colorectal cancer include increasing age, race, high fat intake, a family history of colorectal cancer and polyps, the presence of polyps in the large intestine, and inflammatory bowel diseases, primarily chronic ulcerative colitis. Age Increasing age is the main risk factor for colorectal cancer. Around 90% of colorectal cancers are diagnosed after age 50. Race Africans have a higher incidence of colorectal cancer than people of other races. Diet and colorectal cancer Diets high in fat have been shown in numerous research studies to predispose people to colorectal cancer. In countries with high colorectal cancer rates, the fat intake by the population is much higher than in countries with low cancer rates. It is believed that the digestion of fat that occurs in the small intestine and the colon leads to the formation of cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens). Likewise, research studies also reveal that diets high in vegetables and high-fiber foods such as whole-grain breads and cereals contain less fat that produces these carcinogens and may counter the effects of the carcinogens. Both effects would help reduce the risk of cancer. What are the signs and symptoms of colon cancer? Symptoms of colorectal cancer are numerous and nonspecific. They include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, change in bowel habits, narrow stools, diarrhea or constipation, red or dark blood in stool, weight loss, abdominal pain, cramps, or bloating. Other conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (spastic colon), ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, diverticulosis, and peptic ulcer disease can have symptoms that mimic colorectal cancer. Some symptoms and signs of colon cancer can also include: rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, dark-colored stool, change in bowel habits, change in stool consistency, constipation, diarrhea, narrow stools. Colorectal cancer can be present for several years before symptoms develop. Symptoms vary according to where in the large intestine the tumor is located. The right colon is wider and more flexible. It can even be called relatively spacious as compared to the rest of the colon. Cancers of the right colon can grow to large sizes before they cause any abdominal symptoms. Typically, right-sided cancers cause iron deficiency anemia due to the slow loss of blood over a long period of time. Iron deficiency anemia causes fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. The left colon is narrower than the right colon. Therefore, cancers of the left colon are more likely to cause partial or complete bowel obstruction. Cancers causing partial bowel obstruction can cause symptoms of constipation, narrowed stool, diarrhea, abdominal pains, cramps, and bloating. Bright red blood in the stool may also indicate a growth near the end of the left colon or rectum. What tests can be done to detect and diagnose colon cancer? When colon cancer is suspected, a colonoscopy is typically performed to confirm the diagnosis and locate the tumor. Colonoscopy is a procedure whereby a health care professional inserts a long, flexible viewing tube into the rectum for the purpose of inspecting the inside of the entire colon. Colonoscopy is generally considered more accurate than barium enema X-rays, especially in detecting small polyps. If colon polyps are found, they usually are removed through the colonoscope and sent to the pathologist. The pathologist examines the polyps under the microscope to check for cancer. Colonoscopy is the best procedure to use when cancer of the colon is suspected. While the majority of the polyps removed through colonoscopes are benign, many are precancerous. Removal of precancerous polyps prevents the future development of colon cancer from these polyps. If cancerous growths are found during colonoscopy, small tissue samples (biopsies) can be obtained and examined under the microscope to determine if the polyp is cancerous. If colon cancer is confirmed by a biopsy, staging examinations are performed to determine whether the cancer has already spread to other organs. complications Since colorectal cancer tends to spread to the lungs and the liver, staging tests usually include CT scans of the lungs, liver, and abdomen. Positron emission tomography (PET) scans, a newer test which looks for the increased metabolic activity that is common in cancerous tissue, also are employed frequently to look for the spread of colon cancer to lymph nodes or other organs. What are the treatments for colon cancer? Surgery is the most common initial medical treatment for colorectal cancer. During surgery, the tumor, a small margin of the surrounding healthy intestine, and adjacent lymph nodes are removed. The surgeon then reconnects the healthy sections of the bowel. In patients with rectal cancer, the rectum sometimes is permanently removed if the cancer arises too low in the rectum. The surgeon then creates an opening (colostomy) on the abdominal wall through which solid waste from the colon is excreted. Specially trained nurses (enterostomal therapists) can help patients adjust to colostomies, and most patients with colostomies return to a normal lifestyle. For early colon cancers, the recommended treatment is surgical removal. For most people with early stage colon cancer (stage I and most stage II), surgery alone is the only treatment required. Chemotherapy Chemotherapy may be offered to some people with stage II cancers who have factors suggesting that their tumor may be at higher risk of recurrence. However, once a colon cancer has spread to local lymph nodes (stage III), the risk of the cancer returning remains high even if all visible evidence of the cancer has been removed by the surgeon. This is due to an increased likelihood that tiny cancer cells may have escaped prior to surgery and are too small to detect at that time by blood tests, scans or even direct examination. Their presence is deduced from higher risk of recurrence of the colon cancer at a later date (relapse). Medical cancer doctors (medical oncologists) recommend additional treatments with chemotherapy in this setting to lower the risk of the cancer’s return. Drugs used for chemotherapy enter the bloodstream and attack any colon cancer cells that were shed into the blood or lymphatic systems prior to the operation, attempting to kill them before they set up shop in other organs. This strategy, called adjuvant chemotherapy, has been proven to lower the risk of cancer recurrence and is recommended for all patients with stage III colon cancer who are healthy enough to undergo it, as well as for some higher risk stage II patients whose tumor may have been found to have obstructed or perforated the bowel wall prior to surgery. In general, anticancer medications destroy cells that are rapidly growing and dividing. Therefore, normal red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells that also are growing rapidly can be affected by chemotherapy. As a result, common side effects include anemia, loss of energy, and a low resistance to infections. Cells in the hair roots and intestines also divide rapidly. Therefore, chemotherapy can cause hair loss, mouth sores, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, but these effects are transient. for more, please follow source. source: http://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/05/14/colon-cancer-symptoms-causes-and-treatment/ cc: lalasticlala |

self medication means to take medicines without a doctor’s prescription, dangers of self medication is numerous, and are briefly explained in this post. When we feel a little pain, fever, headache, or any minor restlessness then we use medicines especially tablets or syrups commonly. However, there are certain reasons for self-medication, most of people who are living far away from the hospital, doctor or medical center tends to self medicated them selves since they are out of reach of health centers, that is why it is crucially important for governments to provide health facilities in different places. people take self-medication often or occasionally, the patients hesitate to pay the fees to doctor then they take self-medication. When they feel relief after taking self-medication, then they consult the doctors. most of the drugs being abused today include painkillers, antibiotics (most dangerous),antipyrectic drugs, etc Dangers of self medication self-medication is very dangerous which cannot let you to survive through the illness, this shows that dangers of self medication is greater than the positive aspect Moreover, it becomes very difficult for them to diagnose the self-medication patients since the drug they take have both negative and positive effects on the body, making the major disease or health problem unable to be diagnosed. When someone takes self-medication, usually takes more or less medicines than the recommended dosage, it causes a lot of health disorders that ranges from reactions, seizures or liver problems, because of the intoxication reaction of the liver. In certain cases they take drugs with toxic substances which is very harsh. Self-medication has harmful effects on health Today there is a list of drugs which can not to be offered to the patients without medical prescription. Furthermore, self-medication is boosting rapidly. It is incumbent and important to inform the people about the harmful consequences of self-medication so they know the consequences of their action. some antibiotics when taken out of prescriptions, its either taken in low dosage, making the bacteria infections to become immune to the antibiotic, this makes the bacteria infection hard to be cleared even after proper diagnosis because the patient has made the bacteria strong enough to withstand the effects of the antibiotics Many people take paracetamol more often to cool of their headache, not knowing that headache is not a sickness, that its a symptom of an underlying sickness, which will go when the main sickness in the body is treated, taking paracetamol will not stop it. Both doctors and government can play a very positive role in eradicating self-medication, and government should update the list of drugs which should not be given without any medical prescription which will help us to prevent self-medication. source: http://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/01/08/effects-dangers-self-medication-know/ cc: lalasticlala, |

Liver failure is a life-threatening condition that requires hospitalization. Many people do not have any liver damage symptoms until serious liver problems have already developed slowly and silently. Liver failure occurs if the liver has lost all of its function due to cirrhosis caused by different liver diseases, signs and symptoms of liver failure is what we will discuss in this post. What are the common causes of cirrhosis? -Hepatitis B & C -Alcohol-related Liver Disease -Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) & Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) -Autoimmune Hepatitis -Bile duct disease such as Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) -Metabolic diseases such as Hemochromatosis, Wilson disease and Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency What are the symptoms and signs of liver failure caused by cirrhosis? For some people, cirrhosis is diagnosed unintentionally. Cirrhosis often does not have any specific signs and symptoms in the early stage. The non-specific symptoms may be: -Nausea -Loss of appetite -Fatigue -Diarrhea -Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes) -As cirrhosis progresses, symptoms and complications can appear that make it apparent that the liver is not doing well. These could be the symptoms of Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE) and other complications due to cirrhosis. In addition to Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE), following complications are signs of liver damage or cirrhosis: -Fluid build up and painful swelling of the legs (edema) and abdomen (ascites) -Bruising and bleeding easily -Enlarged veins in the lower esophagus (esophageal varices) and stomach (gastropathy) -Enlarged spleen (splenomegaly) -Stone-like particles in gallbladder and bile duct (gallstones) -Liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma) -Chronic liver failure indicates that the liver has been failing gradually, possibly for years. If the liver is failing, a liver transplant may be needed in some cases. share. source: http://generalhealthinfo.com/2018/02/15/signs-and-symptoms-of-liver-failure/ |
Dental therapy profession have been stanpid, matched and ignored, its professionals most times are embarrassed by the dentist, saying that dental therapists/hygienists are no doctor and have range of a restricted practicing scope. I want to clearly state the functions f dental therapists in relation to that of the dentist as stated by the dental council. Dental therapy practice is a subset of the practice of dentistry, and is commensurate with a dental therapist’s approved education, training and competence. Dental therapists provide oral health assessment, treatment, management and prevention services for children and adolescents up to age 18. Disease prevention and oral health promotion and maintenance are core activities. Dental therapists and dentists have a consultative working relationship, which is documented in an agreement between the parties. Detailed scope of practice for dental therapy practice The Dental Council defines the practice of dentistry as the maintenance of health through the assessment, diagnosis, management, treatment and prevention of any disease, disorder or condition of the orofacial complex and associated structures. In collaboration with dentists and other health care professionals, and in partnership with individuals, whãnau and communities, dental therapists provide oral health assessment, treatment, management and prevention services for children and adolescents up to age 18. Disease prevention and oral health promotion and maintenance are core activities. Dental therapy practice involves: -obtaining medical histories and consulting with other health practitioners as appropriate -examination of oral tissues, diagnosis of dental caries and recognition of abnormalities -preparation of an oral care plan -informed consent procedures -administration of local anaesthetic using dentoalveolar infiltration, inferior dental nerve block and topical local anaesthetic techniques -preparation of cavities and restoration of primary and permanent teeth using direct placement of appropriate dental materials -extraction of primary teeth -pulp capping in primary and permanent teeth -preventive dentistry including cleaning, polishing and scaling (to remove deposits in association with gingivitis), fissure sealants, and fluoride applications -oral health education and promotion -taking of impressions for, constructing and fitting mouthguards -referral as necessary to the appropriate practitioner/agency -performing pulpotomies on primary teeth. -taking and interpreting periapical and bitewing radiographs -preparing teeth for, and placing stainless steel crowns on primary teeth. -Dental therapy practice includes teaching, research and management given that such roles influence clinical practice and public safety. Dental therapists are important members of the dental team. They carry out courses of treatments recommended by the dentist who has examined the patient. The Dental Therapist In addition to the duties of a dental hygienist, a qualified dental therapist who has completed the appropriate training can also perform: -routine restorations in both deciduous and permanent teeth on adults and children -pulp therapy treatment of deciduous teeth -placement of pre-formed crowns on deciduous teeth -extractions of deciduous teeth -treatments using all materials except pre-cast or pinned placement Now for dentists, who are also called the B.D.S (bachelor of dental surgery) can of cause perform the whole stated functions and more, including major orofacial surgeries, depending on the specializations. so there is no point having a discrepancy of any kind in the field, you are all one team source: https://marabaonline.com/2020/02/04/duties-and-working-scope-of-a-dental-therapist-in-relation-to-a-dentist/ cc: lalasticlala |
