THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter has described the decision to ban post-JAMB examinations in Nigerian universities as a “shallow thought and autocratic” that would add no value to our education in the country. The Union said this through its Chairman, Dr. Deji Omole in a statement yesterday. While arguing that the decision was unbecoming of a person occupying the exalted position of a minister, Dr Omole said the pronouncements by the Minister of Education Adamu Adamu had eroded the autonomy of university in admission of students. The lecturer further noted that the ‘autocratic pronouncement’ was a non issue when compared with fundamental issue of funding universities and meeting ASUU-FGN 2009 agreements. He added that the ban was more disturbing and ill-timed now that the Federal government is owing public universities about N1billion intervention fund. With the ban, Omole said it was obvious that the Education Minister was oblivious of extant university autonomy granted the Senate of Nigerian Universities to determine the procedures for the conduct of admission and regulate admission of its students. Dr Omole stated that the decentralisation of JAMB should be carried out by federal government since the examination body lacked the ability to conduct credible and dependable examination upon which credible universities like University of Ibadan can rely. Making reference to a research conducted by Professor Afolabi Bamgboye in the University of Ibadan, he stressed that the findings revealed that higher JAMB scores have negative relationship with the performances of students at 100 university degree examinations. According to Dr Omole, JAMB has outlived its credibility as indicated in last examination exercise it conducted where candidates who did not finish examinations or had issues with their Computer Based Test were awarded extra 40 marks arbitrarily without justifications. ” A Nigerian Minister of Education must make pronouncement based on sound academic research not on road-side talk which queries his very essence of being appointed as a Minister. “This study, he said, showed that UME score has either a negative or weak correlation with performance at university level indicating that the higher the scores at UME the lower is the performance at 100 level as shown by the Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) at university degree examination. The results of the research however established that the performance at SSCE or NECO is statistically significantly correlated with CGPA. This shows that the performance at SSCE may be a good determinant of student academic ability to cope with university education because of their high performance at 100 level. How are we to admit based on a Board that award arbitrary marks to students? As it stands University of Ibadan can only admit 10percent of those who apply to it.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/ban-on-post-jamb-exam-shallow-thought-ASUU/ |

A Federal High Court in Lagos has granted bail in the sum of N250m to a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, who is being tried by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for an alleged fraud of N4.9bn. Justice Muslim Hassan granted the bail with two sureties in like sum and ordered Fani-Kayode to deposit his passport in the custody of the court pending the outcome of the case. The sureties, the court said, must be owners of landed properties within the court’s jurisdiction. They were also to present evidence of tax clearance in the state. Also admitted to bail in the same conditions were a former Minister of State for Finance, Nemandi Usman, and one Danjuma Yusuf, who were standing trial along with Fani-Kayode. Joined as the 4th defendant in the charge was a company, Joint Trust Dimension Nigeria Limited. The accused were on June 28, 2016 arraigned before Justice Hassan on 17 counts bordering on conspiracy, unlawful retention of proceeds of theft and money laundering. Fani-Kayode, who was the spokesperson for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign organisation in the 2015 general elections, was accused of conspiring with the others to directly and indirectly retain various sums which the EFCC claimed they ought to have reasonably known were proceeds of theft. The accused persons were said to have allegedly committed the offences between January 8, 2015 and March 25, 2015 in the build-up to the general elections. n one of the counts, the EFCC alleged that Fani-Kayode, who it listed as the 2nd defendant in the charge sheet, and his co-defendants conspired among themselves to “indirectly retain the sum of N1,500, 000,000.00, which sum you reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.” The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, had told the court that the said conspiracy and indirect retention of the N1.5bn constituted an offence under Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012, punishable under Section 15(3)( 4) of the same Act. In another count, the EFCC alleged that Fani-Kayode “directly retained the sum of N350m,” which the anti-graft agency claimed that he ought to have “reasonably known formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: stealing.” Fani-Kayode was accused of directly using parts of the money at various times, including between March 20 and 25, 2015, when he allegedly used N250,650,000.00 out of the money. Fani-Kayode was also accused of making a cash transaction of N24m with one Olubode Oke, said to still be at large, on February 12, 2015 “to Paste Poster Co of 125, Lewis Street, Lagos Island.” The duo were said to have made the transaction without going through any financial institution, an act the EFCC claimed was contrary to sections 1(a) and 16(d) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 16(2)(b) of the same Act. But the four defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The EFCC has, however, listed 17 witnesses it intends to call during trial to substantiate its allegations. Justice Hassan adjourned till October 19, 2016 for the prosecution to open its case. http://punchng.com/n4-9bn-fraud-fani-kayode-others-get-n250m-bail/

Erstwhile Minister of Aviation and Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Sen. Stella Oduah, has debunked reports that Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, was on her trail for allegedly stashing nearly N2.5 billion in a bank account she opened using the identity of her domestic aide. In a statement on Monday, by her Head of Communications, Francisca Onyeisi, Senator Oduah said she received the reports while relaxing in her country home in Ogbaru, Anambra State. This is even as she challenged publishers of the allegations to validate proofs that she was guilty. Recall that a major News website, based in the US, yesterday, reported that EFCC sources revealed to it how Ms. Oduah used the name and pictures of the unnamed maid to set up the account, adding that she apparently opened the account with her housemaid’s name, image, and details without the housemaid’s knowledge. However, describing the allegations as “totally false, baseless and at best the imagination of the publishers,” the ex-Minister said that “if the reports were true, I would have been arrested long before now, especially at a time when the EFCC is freezing accounts and going after opposition governors who enjoy same level of immunity as the president.” The former minister, therefore, urged her supporters and the general public to ignore the reports, saying she had “made a mark in oil and gas and Agricultural businesses before joining politics.” Also, recall that Princess Oduah was removed from office in February 2014 after she was found to have received armoured BMW cars, worth N255million, from an agency she supervised. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/oduah-denies-stashing-n2-5bn-domestic-aides-account/

At least 8 persons died in a clash between herdsmen and farmers in Koh community in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State. Residents said the two communities clashed on Saturday afternoon after a herdsman trespassed into a farmland and the owner raised an alarm, causing the Fulani man to flee. He added that the farmer then mobilised his kinsmen who went after the escaping man who then alerted other herders to confront the farmers, resulting in to a clash. There has been series of clashes between the cattlemen and villagers in the area culminating in the killing of a 10 - year old Fulani boy and a subsequent attack on Koh community that left more than 40 villagers dead earlier this year. Eye witnesses reported that 8 villagers died in the Saturday clash while 7 injured were rushed to the Specialist Hospital and Zenith Hospital in Yola. A politician from the area, Phineas Elisha said he lost two relatives including a police man who was on leave. He clarified that the police man was killed by a stray bullet when he was running for safety. 8. Saturn Saturn is almost 35-times bigger than the Moon. In our night sky, Saturn would simply be Magnificent! Saturn and its rings would cover almost 18 degrees of the night sky, stretching nearly from horizon to horizon. But If Saturn were as close as our moon, it's likely that one of its own moons, Dione would slam into the Earth at some point.
|
7. Jupiter The diameter of Jupiter is 40 times larger than that of the moon and it would dominate the night sky if it were in the same position. Jupiter is so large that from Earth we would not be able to see the north and south poles of the planet, as it would fill the sky as far as we can see. We would all feel a lot more humble with Jupiter's presence constantly looking over us. In other words, if you were to suddenly step out of your house and see Jupiter in the night sky, you will put your hands on your head and say “Chai!!! There is God o! But guys, if this were to magically happen in reality, we would have more pressing things to worry about than how awesome the sky looks. Jupiter would continuously zap us with mass amounts of deadly radiation, the earth’s axis will have a massive tilt, the earth will spin much slower and there will be no nights, there will be violent tides and sporadic volcanic eruptions and we would also weigh much lighter due to Jupiter’s gravitational influence. You will wish Jupiter goes back to where it came from! If Jupiter were the planet in the moon's position, it’s likely Earth would not even survive intact. The Earth will be ripped into pieces and form a ring around Jupiter (just like Saturn).

6. Neptune Neptune is about the same size as Uranus. I know ladies in the house will also like this. ![]()
|
5. Uranus No offense to our beloved moon, but imagine looking up in the sky and seeing this .Uranus is more than 14-times bigger than the Moon and its light bluish colour will give our night sky a romantic glow.
