An American man has drowned while proposing to his girlfriend underwater on holiday in Tanzania. Steven Weber and his girlfriend, Kenesha Antoine, were staying in a submerged cabin at the Manta Resort, off Pemba Island. Footage shows Mr Weber diving underwater to ask Ms Antoine to marry him. In the video according to the BBC report, Mr Weber presses a hand-written proposal note against the cabin window as Ms Antoine films from inside. Ms Antoine, confirming Mr Weber’s death in a Facebook post, said he “never emerged from those depths”. The Manta Resort told the BBC Mr Weber “tragically drowned while free diving alone outside the underwater room” on Thursday afternoon. “It is with the deepest regret that we inform that a fatal accident occurred at The Manta Resort on Thursday 19 September 2019,” the resort said in a statement. Matthew Saus, CEO of the resort, said “everyone is shaken to the core” by Mr Weber’s death. Mr Weber and Ms Antoine had booked four nights at the resort’s underwater room, which lies approximately 250m (820ft) from the shore. Costing $1,700-a-night (£1,300), the cabin is anchored in water around 10m (32ft) deep. On the third day of their stay, Mr Weber, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, plunged into the water to make his proposal. Wearing goggles and flippers, he held a note against the cabin’s glass window as Ms Antoine watched on from within. His note read: “I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. But… everything I love about you, I love more every day!” Later in the video, Mr Weber turns over the sheet of paper to reveal the proposal, before pulling an engagement ring from his shorts and swimming out of view. Mr Saus told the BBC his staff responded to a “problem in the water”, but when they arrived “absolutely nothing could be done”. In her Facebook post, Ms Antoine said Mr Weber “never got to hear her answer” to his proposal, which would have been “a million times, yes”. “We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruellest twist of fate imaginable,” she wrote. “I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together.” The US Department of State said it is aware of the death of a US citizen in Tanzania, in East Africa. “We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss,” a spokesperson said. “We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance.” |

Over 1,000 members of the People’s Democratic Party from Ogun East Senatorial district of Ogun state have defected to the All Progressives Congress in the State. The decampees were said to be loyalists of the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the state during the 2019 general election, Senator Buruji Kashamu. Leader of the decampees, Otunba Kolawole Akinyemi, said they decided to join the progressives as a result of landmark work done by the Governor so far attest to his sagacity and sincerity of purpose. He added that they would join hands with the Governor in moving the State forward. Receiving them, Tunji Egbetokun, the Senior Special Adviser on political matters to the State Governor, Dapo Abiodun. Receiving them, Egbetokun who stood in for Gov. Abiodun said the decampees have made the right choice by joining the progressives, assuring them that the party would ensure fairness, equity and justice for all its members at all times, irrespective of when they join the party. Egbetokun said, “our party is open to all, even members of other parties. You have come at the right time. In our party, we do not discriminate as we give due recognition to all members irrespective of how long they have been members or their social standing”. While promising that the Dapo Abiodun’s administration would not disappoint members by formulating and executing policies and programmes that have a positive impact on the socio-economic well-being of the people, he urged the party faithful to remain resolute and not engage in activities that would bring the name of the into disrepute. He charged the new members to bring in more people into the party, he, however, stressed that the administration would not stifle oppositions, as “competition becomes sweeter when there are opponents”. In his remark, the State Secretary of the Party, Engr. Ayo Olubori appreciated the people for coming on board. He applauded their strong desire to build the future of the State with Prince Dapo Abiodun and urged them to bring in new members to the party and work towards its progress and that of the State. But, in his reaction, Kashamu dissociated himself from the PDP defectors, saying the action did not get his blessing. A statement issued by his Media Adviser, Austin Oniyokor, quoted Senator Kashamu as saying that, “I do not have any problem with any one or a group of people exercising their right to freedom of association but such must be done responsibly and not with elements of lies, blackmail and outright subterfuge. “Kola Akinyemi and his co-travellers should desist from dropping my name in their political prostitution and voyage of anywhere ‘belle face’. I dissociate myself and my genuine followers from this group of desperados. Their movement to the APC in Ogun State does not have my blessings.” Kashamu further stated that while it is true that he has canvassed support for the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led Administration in the overall interest of the state, such should not be misconstrued to mean that he has defected to the APC or authorised any of his followers and associates to do so. “It is true that politics is dynamic. If there is going to be any political alignment or movement in the future, it is going to be a collective decision with the buy-in of all stakeholders. And it will be done openly, not in the less than the honourable manner that these characters have done theirs.” The immediate past Senator, who represented Ogun East Senatorial District at the 8th National Assembly, urged all PDP members to keep faith with the party and continue to work for its interest and growth. Op, is this news about Atiku lost at the tribunal or about the death of Iweala father.... |
Thursday was September 12th for most African countries including Nigeria but the Horn of Africa nation, Ethiopia marked the beginning of its New Year 2012. Ethiopia follows a calendar that is about seven years behind the Gregorian calendar, used in much of the rest of the world. The last day of the year in Ethiopia is referred to as Pagume 6 while the first day of a New Year is Enkutatash. As a Land of Origin, Ethiopian calendar, unlike the Gregorian’s calendar is composed of 13 Months. While the 12 months have 30 days each, the 13th month named Pagume has regularly five (5) days but changes to six (6) days every leap year, this year it has six (6) days. As such, the Ethiopian New Year starts in September, or Meskerem in the local language, not in January. The Ethiopian New Year holiday is known as “Enkutatash” which means the ‘gift of jewels’ as stated in legends. “King Solomon of Jerusalem gave the Queen of Sheba jewelery during her Historic visit to Jerusalem some 3,000 years ago. Her return to Ethiopia after receiving the gift coincided with the New Year celebration in September, and hence the name Enkutatash came to be.” One of the reasons behind which Ethiopia celebrates its New Year during this month is that the number of daylight hours and nighttime hours happens to be exactly equal “in every part” of the globe once every September and the Sun and the Moon, which are used to count time, each set after 12 hours. The second reason is derived from Religious believe, which says that the creation of the Heavens and the Earth took place in September. Ethiopians believe that the month of September shows different signs that explain the beginning of the New Year such as: the time where the blooming flowers are seen everywhere, the rainy and foggy weather leaves and start the pleasant sunny days. During this holiday, a traditional song called “Abebayehosh” is performed by groups of Ethiopian girls who approach their neighbourhood families to extend best wishes for the New Year and in return they receive blessings from the elders. Report gathered from BBC Africa and WHO. Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/09/ethiopia-celebrates-2012-new-year-in-2019/ |
