Football fans see former Nigerian international Peter Rufai as a legend for his role in the Super Eagles’ 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory.

Debo Thomas, a Nigerian businessman residing in Ibadan, Oyo State, claims that Peter Rufai, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper, defrauded him of one million naira.


According to a FIJ investigation, Peter Rufai was introduced to Debo Thomas by a friend in 2021 when he started making plans to establish a sports center in the nation.

According to reports, Rufai fell in love with the concept and made a pledge to give the outline of a task he finished in Belgium.

According to Thomas, Rufai initially resisted taking payment for the design template.

Rufai shared the UBA account where the money should be sent, but he agreed to be paid whatever sum Thomas thought appropriate for his input.

But after a million naira was deposited into Peter Rufai’s account, problems erupted as the former star of Deportivo La Coruna took exception at the meager sum and demanded more.

The former international has refused to comment on the accusations, stating that the case is still pending in court, despite FIJ’s best efforts to contact him.

Peter Rufai will become involved in another case of financial misadventure after this one.

In 2013, the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations champion was accused of stealing a grant worth 200,000 euros intended for a football project in Belgium’s Nigerian community.

It was claimed that the former Lokeren goaltender stole the cash and vowed never to return. According to reports, Rufai threatened to face jail time if he ever set foot on Belgian soil once more.

Rufai, however, refuted the accusations, claiming he had never received money from the Belgian government.

Peter Rufai, who is frequently cited as one of Nigeria’s all-time best goalkeepers, played for a number of clubs in the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Belgium.

But Rufai’s career’s most memorable events occurred while he was playing with the Super Eagles.

Rufai was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998, and he has represented Nigeria at multiple Africa Cup of Nations competitions.

He assisted Nigeria in winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations, the nation’s second continental crown.
