Barcelona confirm Messi departure after contract talks down
The Argentina star will leave the Catalan club after 21 years after negotiations over a new deal fell apart on Thursday
Lionel Messi will not sign a new contract at Barcelona, the club has confirmed.
The Argentine star's latest deal expired this summer but he was expected to commit to a new contract ahead of the new season.
Messi held talks with the club on Thursday and although both parties hoped to reach an agreement that would see Messi remain at Camp Nou, Goal understands there were discrepancies that put the deal at risk of collapsing.
What has been said?
A statement on the club's website read: "Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).
"As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.
"FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life."
What agreement did Messi and Barca have?
Messi had agreed to sign a new five-year contract with the Spanish giants.
The 34-year-old was set to accept a deal that would see his weekly wage reduced by 50 per cent.
But the club's financial situation made it impossible for them to register him for the new season without drastically reducing their wage bill.
Where could Messi go?
The attacker will have his pick of teams to join ahead of the new season, but it remains to be seen which contenders can afford to land him.
Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City are said to be eager to lure him and are regarded as two of the few teams who could match his salary demands.
Messi has also expressed a desire to move back to his boyhood club Newell's Old Boys to finish his career.
What has Messi achieved at Barcelona?
Messi moved to Camp Nou at the age of 13 and progressed through the youth system to make his debut in 2003 when he was just 16.
He has blossomed into arguably the greatest to ever play the game, claiming 10 La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns among a plethora of other trophies.
Messi recently won a major trophy with Argentina for the first time, helping them to Copa America success this year.
Rissamenti: Nigeria To Wave Goodbye To Imported Trains, and Build Them IN NIGERIA Instead. . Mr President is a man of few words, which is why news like this always surprises Nigerians.
But as we're speaking, Nigeria is building a HUGE plant in Kajola, Ogun State, for the manufacturing of railway stock including railway coaches and other railway equipment.
The manufacturing plant is part of the conditionalities Mr President gave to the Chinese company CCECC, before they could undertake all these railway projects we are seeing today.
The railway manufacturing plant construction was inaugurated by VP Prof. YemI Osinbajo in 2019, with very little fanfare or extravagance, just like many of Buhari's silent but highly transformative projects set to take this country to the next level.
Kudos Mr President, and VP Osinbajo, on this great stride in our march to industrialisation.
Kajola Rail Wagon Assembly Plant to Create 5,000 Jobs - Osinbajo
The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo says the Rail Wagon Assembly Plant construction in Nigeria will generate about 5,000 direct and indirect jobs when completed and boost socio-economic activities.
Osinbajo made this disclosure while performing the Official Ground Breaking Ceremony for the construction of the plant in Kajola, Ogun on Saturday.
The Nigerian vice president Osinbajo speaking about the Rail Wagon Assembly Plant construction said: "The plant which is a private investment to be undertaken by Messers CCECC, is central in the production of rolling stock, spare parts and maintenance of equipment needed for the railway modernisation programme being implemented by this administration.
"This ceremony is not just another event, it is a historic turning point. For us, the railway is not only an alternative and comfortable mode of travel.
"It holds the master key to transforming commerce in Nigeria and across the continent. By linking our ports to rail lines and now, building the rolling stock locally, import and export business within, into and out of Africa's largest market will never be the same.
"When completed, it is expected that the plant would produce some parts of the wagons for the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna rail lines, but also for the central rail lines and to satisfy the needs of other rail operators within the West- African sub-region.
"The plant would offer an important platform for engineers, technicians, artisans and other professionals to gain the specialized skills required for the production and maintenance of rolling stock.
"This will invariably conduce to spin-off businesses in the region of operation and across the country wherever rail networks are in existence.
"The plant is expected to generate about five thousand (5,000) direct and indirect jobs," Osinbajo said.
SmartProf: With the energy he has to beat up who he was admitted to learn from, he should not be hurriedly expelled...rather he should be given a one year night shift at the security post to guard the whole school. After serving the punishment and having hope of resuming, he can then be expelled.
You wicked but i can't agree more He deserve this for beating up his lecturer
You can hardly know the difference between slaves and outsourced/casual workers in many organizations. Many employers treat them as people under a curse. They don’t get promotion, denied health benefits and in some cases, they don’t go on holiday. Some are even asked to work from Saturday to Sunday (back to back). Many are subject to inhumane work conditions. Some are even asked to kneel down when they come to work late. It happens with many Indian, Lebanese and Chinese Companies operating in Nigeria. Some indigenous Nigeria company especially Banks & Oil and gas
Can these foreign companies do these in their countries? I don’t blame them anyway. They believe all Africans have a price tag!
rafosky1: This question no need answer. So far you can prove you loan him 4million and that they payment is due, collect your money and if he shouts too much, deduct interest on top.
Isn't that too easy?. Considering the stressi went through before he accept to repay 1.5m
Upoo: You loaned your friend N4,000,000 last year and since then, he has refused to pay back, which has really deteriorated the friendship.
You beg him to just pay you N2,000,000 and forget the rest because you are in a financial crisis. Your friend then says he can only get you N1,500,000 since that's all he has.
You feel like you have no option but to accept. You eventually give him your account details to send the amount directly to your bank.
You wake up the next morning, checked your account and there is N15,000,000 in it. You kept staring at the screen in disbelief but it is indeed 15m.
You grab your phone and find 53 missed calls from him and an additional 27 text messages begging you to transfer back N13,500,000 since he only meant to send N1,500,000 and mistakenly added an extra "0."
As a well-brought-up person, what are you supposed to do?
1. Send back N13,500,000/=? 2. Take your full N4,000,000/=? 3. Keep the entire N15,000,000/=? 4...... 5...
You are a GOOD friend. Take your #1,500,000 and transfer the balance to him. You will never LACK. My candid input.
