GoodLuck Jonathan is the 11th african president who handed over power peacefully.
President Yahya Jammeh who conceded defeat in the just concluded Gambian election will be the 12th african president to hand over peacefully.
Contrary to what many are preaching here the trend of peaceful power handing over in Africa did not start with Nigeria.

1. Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria

Goodluck Jonathan was the president of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. He conceded defeat in a competitive election. He is the first sitting Nigerian president to do so, and to participate in a peaceful transition of power.

2. Joyce Banda, Malawi

Joyce Banda took office as president following the sudden death of President Bingu wa Mutharika in 2012. She was Malawi’s fourth president and its first female president. In May 2014, she was heavily defeated in the presidential election.

3. Abdoulaye Wade, Senegal

Wade led the Senegalese opposition for 26 years prior to winning the 2000 presidential elections in Senegal. Between 1978 and 2012, Wade ran for president seven times.

4. Rupiah Banda

Banda was the president of Zambia from 2008 to 2011. In 2011, he stepped down after losing a re-election bid to opposition leader Michael Sata.

5. Abdou Diouf, Senegal

Diouf served as the second president of Senegal from 1981 to 2000. He is notable both for coming to power by peaceful succession, and for leaving willingly after losing the 2000 presidential election to Abdoulaye Wade. He was also elected Secretary-General of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie between 2003 and 2014.

6. Nicephore Soglo, Benin

Soglo served as prime minister of Benin between 1990 and 1991. He won the 1991 presidential elections and ruled the country until 1996. In the March 1996 presidential election, Soglo took first place in the first round, but he was defeated in the second round by Mathieu Kerekou, who received 53.49% of the votes.


7. Pierre Buyoya, Burundi

Pierre Buyoya came to power after a military coup. He ruled Burundi twice, from 1987 to 1993, and lost the presidential elections to Melchior Ndadaye. Buyoya came back to power in 1996 after second military coup. In 2003, the international community convinced him to create an ethnically inclusive government and hand over power.

8. Mathieu Kerekou, Benin

Mathieu Kerekou first seized power in Benin in a military coup in 1972. He ruled his country for 29 years before losing an election to his former Prime Minister Nicephore Soglo in 1991.

9. Andre Kolingba, Central African Republic

Andre Kolingba was the fourth president of the Central African Republic (between 1981 and 1993). He took power from President David Dacko in a bloodless military coup in 1981 and lost power to Ange-Felix Patasse in a democratic election held in 1993.

10. Nelson Mandela

In April 1994 the Mandela-led ANC won South Africa’s first elections by universal suffrage, and on May 10 Mandela was sworn in as president of the country’s first multi-ethnic government. Mandela resigned his post with the ANC in December 1997, transferring leadership of the party to his designated successor, Thabo Mbeki. Mandela did not seek a second term as South African president and was succeeded by Mbeki in 1999.


11. Thabo Mbeki

Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki served nine years as the second post-apartheid President of South Africa from 14 June 1999 to 24 September 2008. On 20 September 2008, with about nine months left in his second term, Mbeki announced his resignation after being recalled by the National Executive Committee of the ANC,

Paris is set to have an official nudist park after officials voted in favour of the plans on Monday night.

The park could open as soon as next summer, AFP reports, and two main wooded areas on the outskirts of the city, the Bois de Boulogne and the Bois de Vincennes, are being considered as possible options.

Naturism is popular among some Parisians but public nudity is forbidden unless taking place in specified areas, and can carry a penalty of €15,000 (£13,050) or up to a year in prison.

Paris currently has a swimming pool on the 12th arrondissement that allows nudity three evenings a week, but many naturists have been asking for larger spaces in which to roam free of clothes.

“There were 150 of us there on Wednesday night,” Denis Porquet, a member of the Nudist Association of Paris (ANP) told 20 Minutes. The 372-people strong group is often forced to hire other venues such as bowling clubs and spas to be able to host private events for its membership.

The proposal for a nudist park was put forward by the Green Party of Paris and Deputy Mayor Bruno Julliard said the new space would likely be “near a lake, in a regulated setting so that there is no threat to public order,” AFP reported.

Since launching his White House campaign in June 2015, Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has several times walked back comments that got him in hot water.

Here are nine times when Trump distanced himself from his own comments:

1. John McCain

In July 2015, Trump said Republican senator and former prisoner of war John McCain was “not a war hero,” adding: “He’s a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured, OK?”



The remark sparked immediate consternations among Republicans. The next day, Trump — then embroiled in a primary battle with a host of challengers — said, “Four times, I said he is a hero. But you know… people choose little selective pieces.”

2. Megyn Kelly

Annoyed by the questions that Fox News reporter Megyn Kelly asked him in the first Republican presidential primary debate in August 2015, Trump said the following day: “You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever.”

Was he referring to Kelly’s menstrual period? Many believed he was.

Trump told CNN: “I didn’t even finish the thought. I was going to say nose and/or ears, because that’s a very common statement, blood flowing out of somebody’s nose.”

3. Violence

“If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them, would you? Seriously. Just knock the hell — I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise. I promise,” Trump told his supporters in February.

The next month, after one of his supporters hit a protester, Trump said: “I don’t condone violence, and I didn’t say I was going to pay for the fees.”

4. Nuclear weapons for Japan

In a March interview with The New York Times, Trump said: “Would I rather have North Korea have them with Japan sitting there having them also? You may very well be better off if that’s the case.”

After criticism from his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, Trump said: “She was saying last night so many things. Donald Trump wants to see Japan get nuclear weapons. I never said that.”

5. Cruz’s dad and Oswald

“(Cruz’s) father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to Oswald being, you know, shot,” Trump said in May of the father of his primary rival Ted Cruz, citing an article in the tabloid National Enquirer. Oswald was the man who assassinated US president John F. Kennedy in 1963.

The allegation about Cruz’s father stirred up a media firestorm. This time, Trump did not deny he made the comments, but denied any responsibility for them, saying he was just quoting the Enquirer.

“I just asked about stories that were appearing all over the place, not just in the National Enquirer, about the fact that a picture was taken of him and Lee Harvey Oswald. They didn’t deny that picture,” he told NBC’s “Today” show.

6. Disabled journalist

In November 2015, Trump criticized a statement by journalist Serge Kovaleski, who suffers from a congenital disorder that limits the functioning of his joints, forcing his arm to be curled in front of him.

The candidate flailed his arms and shook his head as if to imitate Kovaleski, saying: “Now, the poor guy, you ought to see this guy, ‘Ah, I don’t know what I said, I don’t remember.”

In June on Twitter, in response to a Clinton ad using the video sequence, Trump said: “Clinton made a false ad about me where I was imitating a reporter GROVELING after he changed his story. I would NEVER mock disabled. Shame!”

7. Vladimir Putin

“I got to know him very well because we were both on ’60 Minutes’. We were stablemates, and we did very well that night,” Trump said of Russian President Vladimir Putin, sparking waves on the US political left and right.

Later, the notion that they met on the set was debunked, as they were in different cities when their interviews were taped.

In July, Trump said: “I have no relationship with him.”

8. Russian hackers

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Trump said in July, referring to Clinton’s private email server which she used during her time as secretary of state.

The remark was interpreted as an invitation to Russian intelligence services to hack his rival.

“Of course, I’m being sarcastic,” he said the next day.

9. Second Amendment and Clinton

“Hillary wants to essentially abolish the Second Amendment,” Trump told a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina on Tuesday, referring to the US Constitution’s clause that enshrines the right to bear arms.

“If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks,” Trump said. “Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is, I don’t know.”

His meaning was ambiguous, but the remark was seen as a possible threat of violence against Clinton or her Supreme Court nominees.

Later the same night, on Fox News, the candidate rejected that interpretation, saying: “This is a political movement. This is a strong powerful movement, the Second Amendment. (…) There can be no other interpretation.”

Fresh reports from intelligence sources have revealed that some Boko Haram suicide bombers and militants have headed for Europe, while others are reportedly migrating to Syria to join and fight for the Islamic State.
This is as a result of their camps in the North-East which have been hit with food scarcity, Daily Mail is reporting.

The food scarcity is said to be forcing the indoctrinated members of the militant sect to continue to move out in droves.

Daily Mail quoted a source linked to Nigeria’s National Intelligence Agency as saying that, “They (Boko Haram refugees) will soon start showing up on the Mediterranean’s shores. Some of these people are trained suicide bombers and fighters, including children as young as 10.

”They have all been indoctrinated by Boko Haram and they could soon turn up in Europe’s capitals.

“Human traffickers from the ISIS-backed terror group now transport girls and young men across the Sahara into Libya, a situation they said was more worrisome as according to them, ‘five children are dying an hour with 250,000 at risk of starvation while parliament remains hamstrung in a political wrangle’.”

Governor Nasir el-Ru­fai of Kaduna State has stopped senior civil servants in the state from send­ing their children and wards to private schools.

The directive will be en­forced from the next academ­ic session.
Ahead of the time, the af­fected government functionar­ies have been directed to with­draw their children and wards from private schools and pre­pare them for admission into the public schools.

In an interview with our reporter, the Commis­sioner for Education, Prof. An­drew Nock, said that plans have been concluded by the state government to restore public schools to their past glory.


According to him, “the state government has given order to all directors to withdraw their children from private schools to our own schools” with a view to improving teaching and learn­ing in the schools.
On the failed attempts by successive administrations to implement similar policy, Nock said that “our government is not like the previous ones. What we will do is to monitor it to en­sure that this order is carried to the latter.”
The commissioner said that as part of the efforts to revamp education in the state, 15 pub­lic secondary schools have been converted to boarding schools with effect from the next ses­sion.

He named the schools as Queen Amina College, Kadu­na; Government Girls Second­ary School, Kawo; Government Technical College, Malali; Bare­wa College, Zaria; Girls Sci­ence Secondary School, Kwoai; Government College, Kagoro; Government Girls Secondary School, Soba; Government Col­lege, Saminaka; Rimi College, Government College, Kaduna, Government Secondary School, Kachia; Government Girls’ College, Zonkwa and Govern­ment Secondary School, Giwa.

Nock recalled that some of the schools were original­ly boarding institutions before they were converted to Day Schools.
To this end, Nock said “plans are underway to reno­vate and upgrade the hostels, library, clinics facilities and to­tal landscaping of the schools to give them an aura of academic environment.”

Dangote To Build N140bn Sugar Factory In Niger State

Dangote Group is set to build a N148 billion ($450m) Sugar factory in Niger State.
The Group has been in talks with the State government and the host communities of Jima-Nupeko villages in Lavun and Mokwa local government areas of the state for the establishment of the sugar plant for about a year now and the construction of the factory is about to commence.
Preparatory to the take-off was a meeting yesterday, between the state governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, represented by his deputy, Ahmad Muhammad. Ketso, and officials of Dangote Group and representatives of the host community for the proposed Sugar factory. The crucial meeting was held at the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar ‘s Wadata Palace in Bida.
LEADERSHIP findings revealed that the meeting was aimed at discussing and harmonizing the interest shown by Dangote Industries Limited to acquire 16,000 hectares of land for sugar cane farming and sugar production in the two local government areas within Etsu Nupe’s domain.
Speaking at the end of the meeting, the deputy governor, who stood in for the Niger State governor said that one of the means of creating job opportunities by the administration in the state was by encouraging investors and development partners to invest in the vast agricultural potentials of the state.
He challenged potential investors in agriculture and agro-allied industry to cash in on the state’s comparative advantage and various economic incentives offered by the government to invest in the sector in the state.
Meanwhile, the meeting had set up a technical committee to study and harmonise all issues that will engender successful take-off of the sugar factory and report back within six weeks, while the office of the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice was directed to prepare a memorandum of understanding (MOU) before the next meeting.
The head of Human Resource and Administration, Sugar Refinery of Dangote Group, Murtala Zubairu commended the approach of the state government for the successful take off of the multi-billion naira project which will be in phases, and will be kick started in few months with the take off of the sugar cane plantation.
Zubairu assured the government and people of the state that Dangote Group is a socially responsible entity and promised that the company will not renege on its responsibilities to the host community and the state in general.
From the preliminary plan, the sugar cane farming and the sugar factory, when in place, will provide 2,200 direct jobs, 5,300 in-direct jobs, while the plant is expected to produce 1,100 tonnes of sugar annually. The project will also produce ethanol, and generate 20 megawatts of power among others.
The state government has assured investors of conducive atmosphere for any investment made in the state.
Meanwhile, the federal government expects to earn a staggering $500 million from the Dangote Refinery presently under construction in Lekki Free Zone, Lagos state. The refinery is the biggest of its kind in the world with a capacity to refine 650, 000 barrels of oil per day. The project also is complemented by, petro-chemical, fertilizer and gas plants.
Speaking during the inspection of the Refinery, in Lagos, yesterday, the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode noted that the Dangote Group’s decision to embark on the four significant projects that will have great multiplier effects on the growth and economy of Nigeria was aimed at boosting economic prosperity of the entire country.
Ambode said, “What this tells us is that Lagos is on an expansive growth both on the east and west sides of Lagos. There is nothing we can do as a government than to commend Alhaji Aliko Dangote and thoroughly support him.
“We are going to have a petro- chemical project that is coming up in 2017 ,and a refinery that will come upstream on the first quarter of 2019, then a the gas project that is coming upstream 2018. You can just visualize what that means to the economy of Lagos. Direct job created here is 135,000 people and indirect jobs 100,000 people. The income that will be generated to the federal government is over $500 million. This is from a single individual.”
Fielding questions from journalists shortly after undertaking the working visit to the Dangote Refinery, petro-chemical, fertilizer plants and gas plant, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the government was presently harnessing the potentials of the private sector to accelerate the growth of its economy.
“This is the largest industrial undertaking in Nigeria. There we have seen the refinery which is meant to refine 650, 000 barrels of oil per day which by all projection is the largest in the world. There is also a pipeline production plant here. I think it is an incredible industrial undertaking in the country and most ambitious in the continent today. It is really inspiring,” Osinbajo said.
For the president of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote the investor friendly policy of Lagos State informed his massive investments in the state. Dangote added that “This investment that we have by the time that we finish , especially the gas pipeline, a state like Lagos can run without any interruption of electricity power supply. It will be as good as living in London where you don’t see power outage. That is because we can supply power from here to anywhere . That means tripling the Gross Domestic Product of Lagos state and it will create a lot of economic activities.”
Dangote said he was optimistic that his huge investment will attract other investors to the zone. ProminentNigerians present at the event include: the chairman Forte Oil, Femi Otedola, minister Of Power Works and Housing Mr Babatunde Fashola, minister of Solid Minerals Dr. Kayode Fayemi, minister of Finance Mrs Kemi Adeosun , minister Industry and Investment Okechukwu Enelamah.

An Internally Displaced Person at Dalori camp in Maidugui on Tuesday said he took to drugs to erase memory of the “slaughter of his father, mother and four sisters” by Boko Haram insurgents.
Narrating his ordeal to a Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), 30 year-old Abubakar Mala from Gamboru-Ngala in Borno, said the parents and sisters were brutally killed during an attack on their town.

Mala said the insurgents had stormed the town, forcing himself and other residents to take to their heels.
He said when he returned days later after the insurgents had left, he found the remains of his parents and sisters in bad shape.

“I was not a drug addict before; I had a flourishing business in Gamboru where I make good money to carter for my parents.

“Unfortunately, everything was taken away from me, including all my family.

“What do you expect me to be doing; how do you think I can forget this memories; to me, life means nothing.
“I need to forget the memory of the sad event and that is only possible through the taking of drugs.

“I love to be like this (drug addict) because it makes me forget all those madness,” said Mala.
