The good ones retain water ie they have a trap that retains water hence foul smell or any smell cannot get through.

But, this is not to say there ain't those that allow smell through them..

Also... If the connection is bad and the location is eg a kitchen where the probability of it draining water is low, there is the tendency that the water in the trap wld evaporate and get dry, hence odour wld pass through... Solution, always pour water into it... Best solution, pipe the drain probably away from foul pipes.

I got a job as a hotel manager some months ago.

The hotel is a bit far from my house and I spend an average of N600 on transportation daily and the salary is 45k per month. Right now I'm fed up with the job.

Now to the issue you have in the house , you need to chambers if the waste and soil pipes are not linked to the same chamber.

Also, you need to change your floor drains to S-Trap floor drain to prevent the odour flowing back to the house. Make you all the toilet have outer Vent .

Introduce magic waste to all the basins in other to retain some water so as to prevent the bad odour as well .
