Kalu Kalu, one of the lawyers of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was involved in the suit filed against President Bola Tinubu in US has made some revelations. Responding to questions at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Kalu said one of the documents released by Chicago State University (CSU) showed that Tinubu allegedly forged the certificate of a black American. Atiku had filed a suit against President Bola Tinubu over his academic record at the Chicago State University (CSU). Although Tinubu tried to block the release of the documents, saying it was an intrusion of his privacy, the court overruled him. Subsequently, Atiku’s lawyers got hold of the documents on Monday, while an oral deposition was made by Caleb Westberg, CSU Registrar. A deposition is the process of taking a sworn, out-of-court oral testimony of a witness. This testimony may be reduced to a written transcript for use in court or for discovery purposes. Speaking in Abuja, Kalu said, “On the certificate issued or released by Chicago State University to the lawyers of Alhajji Atiku Abubakar. These are the documents; One, that Bola Ahmed Tinubu forged the certificate he presented to INEC. “Two, that the qualified certificate from Southwest College to Chicago State University bears a female. That means that document does not belong to Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Three, the Chicago State University admission application form has a claim that Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended Government College Lagos and graduated in 1970, when indeed the school got established in 1974. The same document has it that the owner of that document is a Black American and the document Bola Ahmed Tinubu submitted to INEC, he denied having dual citizenship which means it doesn’t not belong to him.” PESIDENCY DENIES FORGERY ALLEGATION Meanwhile, the presidency has dismissed the claim that the certificate Tinubu presented to INEC was forged. President Tinubu’s media aide, Temitope Ajayi, issued a statement on Wednesday to clear the air on the controversy trailing CSU. “We should be clear. In the deposition made by the Chicago State University, there was nowhere the University said the certificate presented to INEC by President Tinubu is fake. “The University insisted under oath that President Tinubu graduated with honours and even at that, replacements for lost certificates are done by vendors not the University. “The claim that President Tinubu submitted fake certificate to INEC does not make sense. A man can not forge the academic records he possesses. You can only forge what you don’t have.” https://dailytrust.com/breaking-we-confirmed-that-tinubu-forged-certificate-of-a-black-american-atikus-lawyer/ |

– CJN warns judges The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has clarified that public opinion, no matter how serious or weighty it might be, cannot override or supersede the constitution of the country. He has, therefore, charged Judges in the country to always apply constitutional provisions in deciding each case that may be assigned to them. The CJN made the clarification on Wednesday at the Supreme Court in Abuja while inaugurating another batch of 23 Judges for the Federal High Court of Nigeria. He said several vitriolic attacks are regularly heaped on the judiciary but that it is crystal clear that public opinion, no matter how serious, cannot override the Constitution. The CJN explained that judicial officers still owe their conscience and the generality of the Nigerian masses, particularly those who are looking up to them, the great responsibility of good moral rectitude and acceptable conduct to uphold and consolidate the trust reposed in them. He said “The newly appointed Judges of the Federal High Court have just taken the oath of office. This is a requirement prescribed by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. “By virtue of the oath you have just taken, you have, automatically, assumed new status and responsibilities in life. A new blank page in the book of life has just been opened for you; and as it is with public office, especially the Judiciary, you are completely opened to daily public scrutiny. “The pen is right there in your hand to write whatever you desire to be the content of the new page that is now openly displayed in the public domain. “Like I always say, even though judicial officers are not spirits or superhuman beings, so much impossible things are yet expected from them by the society. “I heartily rejoice with you on this very important and sensitive appointment, but at the same time, I sincerely sympathize with you for the landmines that are already laying on your paths in the course of your adjudication, especially if your conscience is at variance with your conduct. “The bench is neither for the indolent, the greedy nor those with dubious character, who can easily fall for a plate of porridge offered by desperate litigants. “You must, at all times, rise above temptations and trials that might obstruct or even halt your rise to the pinnacle of your career. We are all humans, no doubt, but you display the humanism in you by doing those extraordinary things that people would ordinarily conclude that you cannot do. “That is what separates those with integrity and passion for success from those with low pedigree and dysfunctional moral compass. “My lords, for the umpteenth time, I wish to impress it on you, in very clear terms, the honest fact that the exercise that has just taken place, should not, by any vestige of imagination, be taken for granted or simply tagged as one of those usual ceremonies merely conducted to comply with established procedures and obligations in public office. “You have just entered into a lifetime covenant with the Almighty God and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Henceforth, whatever you do rightly will be counted, and accordingly, recorded in your favour. “Similarly, whatever wrongdoing that emanates from any form of indiscretion and abuse of office, will, in like manner, be used to conscientize, chastise and thoroughly sanitize the same conscience that you may have refused to listen to. “Appointment to the bench is not an appointment to wealth, vainglory, dishonest disposition or ostentatious lifestyle through corrupt acquaintances. “The searchlight of the National Judicial Council beams brightly on all judicial officers across the country. The NJC should never, either by omission or commission, be mistaken for a toothless Bulldog. “It can bark fiercely and bite deeply and aggressively, too. Our radar is sophisticated enough to detect every form of corruption and wrongdoing by Judicial officers, and we will not waste a moment in taking the necessary action to fish out the bad eggs. “The remoteness of your location of adjudication can never blur our sight on you. We have put in place the right machinery to capture and document your conduct. “So, be careful and take heed, or else, you may end up regretting ever being appointed a judicial officer. Though, we don’t wish you such, anyway! “The entire letters and words of the oath you have just taken, must reside in a prime place of your heart and be generously applied in your adjudications. “This is a bond that you should engrave in your heart and be well guided by it while adjudicating in all matters that come before you. “You must be impartial, fair to all, and apply justice in all your undertakings. The times that we are in, are quite perilous, so we need judicial officers who are calculative, honest, objective and dispassionate in all ramifications. “Thus, your appointments to the bench at this crucial period of our national history are not by accident but by divine ordination”, the CJN said. https://dailypost.ng/2023/10/04/public-opinion-can-never-override-constitutional-provisions-in-justice-delivery-cjn-warns-judges/ |

A new report has raised concerns about Nigeria’s central bank digital currency, eNaira, indicating potential risks to financial stability despite its success in narrowing the country’s financial inclusion gap. Launched nearly two years ago under the stewardship of former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, eNaira is set to mark its second anniversary in October. Buhari Emefiele - eNaira launch Ex-President, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and the Ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, at the launch of the eNaira in Abuja in 2021. While the CBN championed eNaira for enhancing financial inclusion and expanding the size of banks’ deposit base, its report, titled “Economics of Digital Currency” obtained by The PUNCH, warns about stability risks due to the conversion of bank deposits into eNaira. The report noted, “Since its inception, bank deposit conversion to e-naira has exhibited an average monthly growth of 78.3 per cent and totalled about N1.66bn [$2.1 million]. “Furthermore, eNaira in circulation as a ratio of average banking system liquidity has averaged 0.1 per cent, reaching highs of 0.2 per cent in each of May and August 2022,” the CBN report noted. According to the report, the impact arises from the fact that funds converted by customers into eNaira are held within wallets domiciled with the CBN, rendering them unavailable for lending activities by commercial banks. As of December 2021, the CBN minted a total of N2bn in eNaira. This milestone, coupled with the nuanced challenges faced by commercial banks due to the eNaira’s issuance and exchange processes, has sparked discussions within the financial sector. It noted that the sluggish growth is attributed to the slow adoption rate among individual users, evident in the low number of active consumer wallets, totalling 10,420. The report revealed that the number marked an improvement from previous months, reflecting 187,190 wallets activated for use as of July 2022. Despite these efforts, challenges persist, hindering the broader adoption of the eNaira in Nigeria’s digital financial landscape. Further, the apex bank noted that eNaira can also negatively affect banks’ overall profitability via reduced non-interest income. The CBDC also comes with increased cyberattack risks, the report said. https://punchng.com/enaira-threat-to-financial-stability-cbn-report/?amp |

The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, has said that he is not responsible for the insecurity ravaging the state. The governor who spoke at his home town in Ozuh Omuma, Oru East Local Government Area of the state during the dedication of St.Rose of Lima Catholic Church Parish Ozuh Omuma also added that his aides were not fuelling the state’s insecurity. A statement issued by his spokesperson, Oguwike Nwachuku, quoted the governor as saying that he was a product of grace and the mercy of God. The statement read in part, “Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Orlu, Most Rev Dr. Augustine Ukwuoma in his Homily said the Church dedication will help to foster peace and bring to an end the insecurity and bloodletting in the area and parts of the State. “In his remarks at the end of the Service, an elated Governor Uzodimma thanked the dignitaries who came from different parts of the country and used the opportunity of the dedication to inform the congregation that neither himself nor his government is instrumental to the killings in Imo State. “He described the insinuation as evil, devilish and an attempt to smear his image and blackmail his government. “He reiterated that as a Governor he needs peace to serve the people well and urged those behind the insecurity in Imo State to have a rethink or be ready to face the wrath of God. “The Governor said that despite all the accusations and blackmail against his person and his administration, God has proven to be with him, saying, “because power belongs to God.” “He said as someone who has benefited from God’s grace, he owes God a lot of gratitude, noting that it is unthinkable for anyone to link him or his government to the cause of crises and violence in a State God made him Governor. “He therefore admonished those responsible for the violence and carnage in Imo State to desist forthwith because they will at the end answer for their sins before God.” https://punchng.com/i-am-not-behind-insecurity-in-imo-says-uzodimma/?amp |
The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the March 18th, 2023 election in Kaduna State, Isa Ashiru, has claimed he won the election and never prayed that the election be declared inconclusive. He urged the people of Kaduna State to continue in their prayers towards ensuring that their mandate is returned to them in the state. Ashiru while reacting to the tribunal’s judgment during a press conference in his residence, over the weekend, explained that there are grey areas to be challenged at the court of appeal. “The prayers of the good people of Kaduna State towards reclaiming our mandate has yielded fruitful results. The tribunal confirmed that the March 18th, 2023 election was not concluded, so declaring Uba San the winner was very wrong.” “I want to make this clarification that after meeting with our legal team, we agreed that the tribunal has done its part but we still have to do a follow-up. So, we are going to the court of appeal to address some grey areas, and we have documents to support our claims “Going by the tribunal’s judgement, a re-run has been declared in 22 polling units where elections were cancelled. In this case, for anybody to say that his victory was upheld by the tribunal in Kaduna State was wrong and misleading. “It is very unfortunate that Governor Uba Sani said the tribunal upheld his election victory. This is unexpected of him, being a leader, especially of his status in a state like Kaduna, the Headquarters of the north. “With the verdict of the tribunal, I know, we have won the race. We earlier approached the tribunal with the view to reclaiming the mandate and fortunately enough, the tribunal nullified the gubernatorial election that took place this year. “I thank the good people of Kaduna State for their patience and commitment towards reclaiming their mandate. I have taken it upon myself with the leadership of the party and other key stakeholders in the state to see that we recover this stolen mandate.” https://dailypost.ng/2023/09/30/kaduna-tribunal-re-run-not-part-of-my-prayers-i-won-election-pdps-ashiru/ |
President Bola Tinubu has announced the approval of N25,000 provisional allowance for junior federal workers over the next six months. He said the approval followed negotiations with labour unions and other stakeholders in the business community to increase the federal minimum wage without triggering undue inflation. “For the next six months, the average low-grade worker shall receive an additional N25,000 per month,” Tinubu announced during his maiden Independence Day address to Nigerians. The President, who acknowledged the suffering of Nigerians since the scrapping of petrol subsidy at his inauguration on May 29, 2023, said he was not happy watching citizens shouldering burdens that would have been shed a long time ago. He said the reforms initiated by his administration were necessary to rid the system of the grip of those he called “a select and greedy few.” Tinubu stated, “I am attuned to the hardships that have come. I have a heart that feels and eyes that see. I wish to explain to you why we must endure this trying moment. “Reform may be painful, but it is what greatness and the future require. We now carry the costs of reaching a future Nigeria where the abundance and fruits of the nation are fairly shared among all, not hoarded by a select and greedy few; a Nigeria where hunger, poverty and hardship are pushed into the shadows of an ever-fading past. “There is no joy in seeing the people of this nation shoulder burdens that should have been shed years ago. I wish today’s difficulties did not exist. But we must endure if we are to reach the good side of our future.” The President reiterated that his administration was doing all that it could to ease the burden. He outlined the path his administration was taking to relieve the stress on families and households, saying, “We have embarked on several public sector reforms to stabilise the economy, direct fiscal and monetary policies to fight inflation, encourage production, ensure the security of lives and property and lend more support to the poor and the vulnerable. “Based on our talks with labour, business and other stakeholders, we are introducing a provisional wage increment to enhance the federal minimum wage without causing undue inflation.” To ensure better grassroots development, Tinubu said his government had set up an infrastructure support fund for states to invest in critical areas, adding, “States have already received funds to provide relief packages against the impact of rising food and other prices.” To ease the cost of mobility, he explained that his government had “opened a new chapter in public transportation through the deployment of cheaper and safer Compressed Natural Gas buses across the nation. These buses will operate at a fraction of current fuel prices, positively affecting transport fares.” The President added, “New CNG conversion kits will start coming in very soon as all hands are on the deck to fast-track the usually lengthy procurement process. “We are also setting up training facilities and workshops across the nation to train and provide new opportunities for transport operators and entrepreneurs. “This is a ground-breaking moment where, as a nation, we embrace more efficient means to power our economy. In making this change, we also make history.” The President said in October, his government would extend its social safety net through the expansion of cash transfer programmes to an additional 15 million vulnerable households. Tinubu thanked members of civil society organisations and labour unions for their dedication to Nigerian democracy saying, “We may not always agree, but I value your advice and recommendations. You are my brothers and sisters, and you have my due respect.” He also assured citizens that his administration was fighting corruption, particularly through the ongoing probe into the activities of the former Central Bank of Nigeria leadership, reports of which would be ready soon. The President stated, “I pledged a thorough house cleaning of the den of malfeasance the CBN had become. That housecleaning is well underway. “A new leadership for the central bank has been constituted. Also, my special investigator will soon present his findings on past lapses and how to prevent similar occurrences. “Henceforth, monetary policy shall be for the benefit of all and not the exclusive preserve of the powerful and wealthy.” Tinubu also reaffirmed his commitment to their security, saying his administration would always accord the highest priority to the safety of the people. He commended the service chiefs and stated that enhanced inter-service collaboration and intelligence sharing had been enhanced. The President also saluted the security forces for “keeping us safe and securing our territorial integrity.” He eulogised those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, praised their families and promised to equip the forces with the ways and means needed to perform their urgent task on behalf of the people. Tinubu also promised to continue to appoint more people to his government in line with the provisions of the constitution and with fairness toward all. “Women, youths and the physically challenged shall continue to be given due regard in these appointments,” he pledged. The President commended the National Assembly for aiding the quick take-off of the administration through the performance of its constitutional duties of confirmation and oversight, and also the judiciary for serving as “a pillar of democracy and fairness.” NLC knocks AGF The Nigeria Labour Congress said on Saturday that its planned nationwide strike was not in violation of any court order as claimed by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN. The National President, NLC, Joe Ajaero, said in a statement that the AGF had displayed acts of partisanship, which should not be found in a holder of the office, who was expected to uphold the freedom and rights of the citizens to protest. Ajaero stated, “We find it curious that Mr Lateef Fagbemi, a thorough-bred professional, could indulge in this kind of talk. “We are shocked that Mr Lateef Fagbemi is referring to a restraining order issued on June 5 through a motion ex parte, which the Ministry of Justice in a formal statement had said lapsed due to non-diligent prosecution. Which order could Fagbemi be talking about here? We demand to know. “We similarly, find it necessary to remind Fagbemi that equating a restraining order to a perpetual injunction will do no small damage to our legal/judicial system. For once, we find it appropriate to reveal to the world that the court refused to sit during the pendency of the order to take our response to that order. “Even though we would not want to be drawn into details here, representatives of the Federal Government on the National Steering Committee are on record to have said in the Villa that their mandate did not extend to subsequent increments (of petrol pump price) after the one of N187-N537 thus differentiating between the issues for which the order (that has since run out of time) was issued.” Meanwhile, the Sokoto State chapter of the NLC on Saturday expressed its readiness to join the nationwide strike as declared by the national headquarters of the union. The State Secretary of the union, Hamisu Yanduna, who spoke with one of our correspondents, said workers in the state had been mobilised for the strike action. Unions confirm participation The National Union of Electricity Employers has urged its members to down tools from Tuesday in solidarity with the indefinite strike called by the NLC and TUC. This was communicated in a letter titled, ‘Mobilisation for indefinite nationwide strike’ signed by the General Secretary of the union, Dominic Igwebike. It read in part, “Further to the NLC’s National Executive Council meeting held on September 26 and the joint press conference of the NLC and TUC over the untold hardship being faced by Nigerians as a consequence of the high price of petrol resulting from the removal of subsidy as well as other anti-labour policies by the government, the NLC and TUC have declared an indefinite and total shutdown of the nation beginning from Tuesday. “Hence, we are to totally withdraw our services and participate in street protests and rallies until the government responds to our demands.” Also, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers also backed the strike. In a letter titled, ‘Mobilisation for a nationwide industrial action’, the union said, “NUPENG as a responsible and responsive affiliate union of the NLC will fully comply with the resolution of the joint NEC meeting and we hereby direct the leaders in the four zonal councils of our union to mobilise all our members in the formal and informal sectors to shut down services effective October 3.” The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees, in a letter by its General Secretary, Mohammed Sheikh, pledged the union’s solidarity with the NLC and TUC. “All managements of banks, insurance and other financial institutions are strongly advised not to inhibit, in any way or form, their workers from actively participating and complying with the directives of the two congresses. Let the people breathe.” The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives also backed the strike action. “I am directed to convey the decision of the NLC NEC meeting to commence nationwide indefinite industrial action with effect from Tuesday,” the National President of the union, Nnachi Ekuma, said in a letter directed to members. Also, the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria in a letter by its General Secretary, Agugbue Ugochi, said its members would down tools come Tuesday. The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, in a letter on Friday, asked its members to join the strike. The Senior Staff Association of Universities, in a letter by its Senior Assistant General Secretary, Kingsley Okayi, said, “All branch chairpersons are requested to commence full mobilisation of our members to actively participate in the strike that is being organised by the NLC.” Similarly, the Nigeria Union of Public Service Reportorial, Secretarial, Data Processing and Allied Workers also announced that its members would join the strike. On its part, the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics, in a letter by its National Secretary, Emmanuel Enyiegor, directed its leaders to “liaise with their state councils of the NLC and mobilise our members for total compliance with the directive.” The Secretary of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Dr Ahmed Lawan, urged members to join the strike and participate actively in all rallies and protests in their respective states. The National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers also urged its members to participate in the industrial action. The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers, Francis Igbokwe, urged the leaders to use their good offices to “mobilise the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Civil Defence Corps commands at the corporation to keep and protect all the fixed and movable assets of the corporation while the strike action lasts.” The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria directed its state council chairmen and secretaries to liaise with the NLC in their respective states for effective coordination. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals, in a letter to its members asked them to join the nationwide strike to “ameliorate the economic hardship imposed on the workers and masses by the removal of fuel subsidy.” Olubadan advises labour, FG The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, on Saturday, appealed to the NLC and the TUC to tread with caution over the proposed nationwide strike, and also urged the Federal Government not to overstretch Nigerians. The Olubadan, in a statement by his Personal Assistant on Media, Oladele Ogunsola, to commemorate the 63rd Independence Day anniversary of the country, urged labour leaders to shelve the planned strike and explore ways of resolving the vexatious issues. He said, “I want to plead with the workers’ unions and urge the government not to overstretch the people. There must be tangible measures to reassure the people that the renewed hope agenda is truly for real. “I plead for dialogue between the labour and the government. There should be openness and understanding, bearing in mind that where two elephants fight, it is the grass there that suffers. Let’s be mindful of the effect of total paralysis on our battered economy. Consider the sick and consider the students from the nursery school to the university among several others that will bear the brunt. The loss is simply incalculable. “I want our labour leaders to cast their minds back to the last prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the effect on our students. How do we compensate for the loss of a whole academic session in the lives of the affected students? Such a loss is eternal because it is not possible to wound back the hand of the clock. That’s just an example.” Senate leader begs The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, appealed to the NLC and TUC to suspend the plan to embark on an indefinite strike in the national interest. Bamidele noted that the Federal Government and all its relevant agencies were working underground to come up with viable options in response to the demands of the organised labour. In a statement on Saturday, Bamidele congratulated Nigerians across all socio-economic and political strata on the 63rd independence anniversary of the nation. He observed that in spite of her internal challenges, Nigeria remained “a strong, united and indivisible nation that still provides strong leadership not only for West Africa, but also entire Africa.” He appealed to the leadership of the NLC and TUC not to embark on an indefinite strike in the national interest as such an action “will further inflict more pain on Nigerians at the time the new government is working hard to address their concerns and grievances.” Edo restores five working days The Edo State Government has reversed its directive that reduced working days from five to three days for civil and public servants following the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government. The government had in June empathised with residents in the wake of the rise in the prices of goods and services as well as the overall cost of living occasioned by the fuel subsidy removal by initiating the three-day-a-week work policy and other measures. In a circular dated September 29, 2023, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, General Services, for the Head of Service, Mrs Priscilla Aziegbemhin, the government said the decision to revert to five work days was in view of the fact that it had put in place measures to alleviate the transport plight of Edo residents. The circular read in part, “I am directed to refer to the above subject and to convey the decision of the state government to bring to an end the implementation of the three-day weekly work schedule for civil/public servants across ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs). “This decision is in view of the fact that the state government has put in place measures to alleviate the transport plight of Edo residents caused by the hike in the price of petroleum products. It is expected that every civil/public servant should take advantage of these measures. “In view of the foregoing, all civil/public servants are by this circular directed to resume work every workday of the week with effect from Tuesday, October 3, 2023.” https://punchng.com/junior-civil-servants-may-get-n55000-as-tinubu-okays-n25000-allowance/?amp |

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria needs political office holders who have identity and authentic credentials. Obi said this in the United States where there is an ongoing case on President Bola Tinubu’s academic record. Recall that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who contested the presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is digging for the academic and personal records of Tinubu, from Chicago State University (CSU). A court ruled in favour of Atiku, ordering CSU to release Tinubu’s record, but the Nigerian president filed a suit against this. Speaking at the Chinua Achebe Symposium at Princeton University, US on Friday, Obi said Nigerians must start working towards a country driven by competence and commitment to fighting corruption. He submitted that leaders in Africa’s biggest economy must be committed to the rule of law. “We must have leadership that is committed to the rule of law… that has an identity and credentials that can be verified. We can start thinking of a new Nigeria with competence, and capacity that is committed to fighting corruption. Is it possible to fight corruption? The answer is yes! “The trouble with Nigeria is self-inflicted. If Achebe was alive, he would have taken back the book. When he wrote it, there was no trouble. Now, there is real trouble in Nigeria.Rascality has become a measure of success in Nigeria. That must change.” Obi is one of those who filed an appeal at the Supreme Court to challenge the tribunal’s ruling that upheld Tinubu’s victory. https://dailytrust.com/peter-obi-nigeria-needs-leaders-with-genuine-identity-verified-credentials/ |

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr Yemi Cardoso, has assured Nigerians that the apex bank will regain its trust and integrity. Cardoso said the CBN will regain all these with the support of his deputies and other relevant financial and economic giants in the institution. The CBN governor revealed this on Tuesday via his X account, while thanking President Bola Tinubu, for the opportunity he bestowed on him to steer the ship of the country’s apex bank. On Monday, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Cardoso as the governor of the CBN following a screening exercise in Abuja. Also, Mrs Emem Usoro, Mr Muhammad Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr Philip Ikeazor, and Dr Bala Bello were confirmed as the deputies to the CBN governor. Making his first social media reaction to the appointment, the CBN governor said there are enormous tasks ahead of him, but added that they are surmountable with the support of his deputies. “Yesterday, I had the honour of standing before the Senate and being confirmed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” Cardoso wrote. “I would like to thank His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the nomination and the Honourable President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio and all the Distinguished Members of the Senate for their time and consideration. Lastly, I would like to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support. “I am humbled to have been appointed as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. “The challenges we face are enormous. Youths of northern extraction under the aegis of Northern Youths Assembly (Majalisar Matasan Arewa) have cautioned President Bola Tinubu against allowing his political allies or appointees to meddle into the electoral dispute in Kano state, warning of possible dire consequences. The Kano state Governorship Election Tribunal had recently nullified the election of Gov. Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP in favour of the All Progressives Congress APC candidate, Alhaji Yusuf Gawuna. However, the governor has since indicated his intention to go on appeal. In an open letter to the president on Thursday, the Acting President of the group, Dr Ali Idris and National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Adikwu Omale said if the Nigerian democratic system should continue to operate on the basis of electoral injustice, undermining the best practices of democratic governance in fairness to all parties, the repercussions would surely be devastating. Part of the statement reads; “We have received with dismay, information which alleged the involvement of some elements in your Government, to have interfered and manipulated the Kano State Governorship Elections Tribunal judgment, an information which if it turns out to be true, could certainly be described as unfortunate, unprecedented, condemnable and uncalled for. “Kano State, as temperamental as it is, such desperate actions could trigger political crisis in the State, and could possibly lead to anarchy. “Kano is considered as the commercial nerve center not only for the North, but to the entire sub Saharan African countries, who have one relationship or the other with Kano State. Kano State could be described as a role model, and as the most politically strategic territory with vast knowledge and political civilization. In view of this, Kano is fragile and when broken into pieces, the national security would surely be threatened. “Sir, let us draw you to the memory lane, starting from 1999 to 2007, when you served as the Executive Governor of Lagos State, under AD. Your party was entirely different from the party at the centre, and despite some misunderstandings, His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo led Federal Government did not make any attempt to snatch the mandate which the good people of Lagos State gave you, to manage the affairs of the State, from 1999 to 2007. “Therefore allowing, some alleged members of your Government, to mastermind the conspiracy of snatching the mandate of the Kano people, is as good as inviting hatred against your own personality, doubting your commitment to upholding democratic principles, institutionalizing electoral injustice, dashing the hope of the Nigerian electorates to lose complete confidence in the system, and subscribing to the school of thought which emphasizes on the unsuitability of the democratic system for African countries. “In addition, if this electoral injustice is allowed to thrive, it would further reaffirm the failure of your Government to uphold the rule of law, and treat all citizens equally and fairly regardless of ethnicity, region, religion, party affiliation and others, and the perceived situation wouldn’t only amount to creating unrest, but would surely be a set back on the Nigerian democratisation and Africa as a whole. “The perceived conspiracy by some alleged elements in the Government, deploying Government machineries and influence, to destroy Kano State, the consequences would not end and stop in Kano, as the repercussions would certainly create a multiplier negative effects on other states of the federation. Therefore using politics to ignite crisis in Kano, through the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, would surely metamorphose into creating crisis which would be difficult to control, based on the brewing tensions, resulting from the Kano State Governorship Elections Tribunal Judgment. Therefore, there is no better time for you to act, than now to save the situation, by prevailing on your party members who have been alleged to be involved in this political recklessness, as the risk is not worth trying” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/09/tribunal-northern-youths-warn-tinubus-men-against-interference-in-kano/amp/ |

The newly confirmed Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Governor, Dr. Olayemi Cardoso has disclosed plans to shore up the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP, to $1 trillion in eight years. Cardoso spoke while answering questions from senators during his screening and confirmation as the governor of the apex bank. Those confirmed as deputy governors are: Emem Usoro, Philip Ikeazor, Muhammad Abdullahi-Dattijo, and Bala Bello He assured that the ratified board will adopt a number of strategies including short term and medium terms goals to repair the economy. According to him, to achieve stability in Nigeria’s exchange rate, measures must be put in place towards ensuring a healthy balance of payment and diversification of the economy. “When you look at the dimension of inflation, we will be doing evidence-based monetary policy. We shall not be making decisions based on a whim. “We will significantly rebound the infrastructural demand with respect to ensuring that our data gathering capacity is enhanced so we can make decisions based on proper data,” he said. According to him, the immediate thing to look out for if confirmed as CBN Governor is to address operational issues which are the unsettled obligations of the CBN. He opined that Nigeria will not make progress if it is not able to handle that side of foreign exchange rate, saying they would do everything possible to ensure that they work closely on the fiscal side and ensure the issue of deficit financing does not become a problem. He further pointed out the need for a strategy known to players, adding that these immediate steps will ease restrictions in the country’s business environment. Cardoso added that removal of oil subsidy, tightening up tax payment, among others, are part of measures to stabilize the economy. “There’s the need to significantly revamp data gathering capacity of the CBN to help in evidence-based decision making by the regulatory house. “We have to ramp up production of food, that is the aspect the fiscal side will handle and we’ll work very closely with the fiscal side on this, and on energy to make sure that happens quickly. “The way money has gone in Nigeria on its own has an effect on inflation. And we have seen studies that suggest that money supply has impacted on inflation in the country. “We also have to work very closely with the fiscal side to ensure that we work on deficit financing,” the former Commissioner for Lagos State Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget said. The new CBN team equally pledged to ensure a collaborative working relationship with the fiscal policy regulators so as to ensure that things don’t get heated up in the polity. According to him, there will be a change of mindset in the CBN to promote compliance, maintaining that the apex bank under him will work with the Senate for consultations and adherence to the CBN Act. Cardoso further underscored the need to do things right, insisting that the bank will not be hijacked by anybody. “We will not knowingly or unknowingly disobey the law. We are going to endure a culture of compliance in the bank. We are not going to tolerate people not complying. That tone would be fully set from the top,” Cardoso added. He pledged to bring the best, most qualified advisers, and that the new CBN bank will promote a culture of openness to get the best results. Also responding to questions from lawmakers, Philip Ikeazu, a Deputy Director, said the new CBN board will “strengthen corporate governance and ensure proper drive of economic policy to maintain price stability and promote a healthy forex.” He called on the upper chamber to support the apex bank to drive export of locally manufactured goods, and promote corporate governance. This is just as he commended the federal government for blocking leakages in the economy, and for stopping the fuel subsidy regime. The CBN team also affirmed that the regulatory body has “strayed significantly over the years”, and that it was committed to returning back on track, and ensuring open and transparent communication with Nigerians. They assured restoring the dignity of the Central Bank, just as they expressed hope to double economic growth over a 10 year period, as well as expanding the capacity of the economy to produce more “Dangotes and Otedolas.” During the exercise, the lawmakers bemoaned the woes bedeviling the country’s economy, as they expressed fears at the involvement of the regulatory bank in sectors outside the mandate of the Central Bank Act. The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, while addressing the Committee of the Whole, frowned at the involvement of the CBN in construction of classrooms, among others. He emphasized the need for an apex bank that is focused on providing sound policy and monetary directions for the economy. Akpabio also regretted that the bank under the former board lost its focus and veered into politics “with money that belongs to Nigerians.” “No where in the world is a currency changed within one week. But the CBN changed the Naira in 11 days just to sabotage the elections, and because some politicians told him that you can contest for election after all you have money with you,” the Senate President added. https://dailypost.ng/2023/09/27/i-will-shoot-gdp-to-1trn-in-8-years-new-cbn-gov-cardoso-vows/ |
E di de! (Stand up!). E joko! (Sit down!), a male voice, loud and guttural, was blasting out from the phone of a colleague who was engrossed in a video he was playing. The voice sounded more like that of a military officer commanding troops on parade. However, it was the unmistakable voice of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Though a retired General, Obasanjo, in this video, was not drilling soldiers on a military parade. His targets were traditional rulers from different parts of Oyo State dressed in flowing robes and clutching their staffs of office. They obeyed the command like soldiers will do; only that the speed at which they stood and sat was different from how soldiers would have done it. The command was not a friendly one and the tone indicated so. The venue was the unveiling of the Iseyin Campus of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology on Friday, September 15, 2023. Obasanjo, the Ebora Owu, was a guest of the state governor, Seyi Makinde, at that event. He arrived at the venue with his host and according to him, he discovered that while others who were already seated stood up to welcome the governor and his entourage, the monarchs remained seated. He added that while the programme was underway and the governor stood up to deliver his address and others stood, the monarchs again remained seated. Angered by what he viewed as disrespect to constituted authority (apologies to late Senator Abiola Ajimobi), he decided to give the monarchs a lecture (both theory and practical) on protocol. I have read and listened to many commentaries on that incident. Positions were taken in favour and against both sides, depending on the commentators’ points of view. I have decided to join the debate. My intervention will be two-fold and will be in the form of answering two questions that I intend to ask. One, were the traditional rulers right to have sat down while the governor and his guest (Obasanjo) entered the venue? I don’t think they were right. I have had the opportunity of covering many events presided over by top government officials like ministers, governors and Presidents. The usual thing is that all those already seated (including traditional rulers) will rise as a mark of respect when such government officials arrive for the meetings or events. Some comperes will even, while announcing the arrival of these important persons, ask that guests rise to welcome them. “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, shall we all rise to welcome the man who has changed the face of modern-day Lekki State; the man who has achieved a lot with little resources, I am talking of no other person but His Excellency, Governor, Senator, Chief, Dr Jeremiah Atimuoyeyije, CON, Mni!,” you will hear them say on top of their voices at such events while everybody, willingly or reluctantly, will rise. Most times, it is while standing like that and the government official arrives at his seat that the national anthem will be recited to signal the commencement of the event. Thereafter, the government official can then ask the guests to sit while he takes his seat too. Former President Goodluck Jonathan was so used to this process while he was the President that whenever he arrived for events, you could predict correctly that the first thing you would hear him say at such events was “Thank you, please be seated!” This presupposes that people rose when he arrived at the venue. He was so used to this that something happened during one of his engagements at the then Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja which was later rechristened the State House Conference Centre. A cocktail reception was organised in honour of members of the national team, the Super Eagles. I can’t immediately recollect the feat they achieved that qualified them for that presidential reception. As typical of such brief events, chairs were not provided since guests were expected to socialise while drinking and eating appetisers. The organisers however provided a few tables where the drinks and appetisers could be placed. Former President Jonathan arrived at the venue and his arrival signalled the formal commencement of the programme even though guests had gone far with their drinks and appetisers as of the time of his arrival. After the national anthem was recited, Jonathan’s voice came up loudly from the speakers in the hall and it was a directive that nobody was willing to obey. “Thank you, please be seated!” he said. All those in the hall laughed and murmured some inaudible words because in the absence of chairs, obeying such a presidential order would mean sitting on the floor. The former President too quickly realised his mistake and joined in the laughter that followed his directive. As far as I am concerned, it is not in doubt that all those seated, irrespective of age or position, usually stand to welcome these government officials. In some cases, some of the highly placed people in attendance may even be asked to line up at the entrance of the venue to welcome these VVIPs and then enter the venue with them. I also know that a similar thing is obtainable in the palaces of these traditional rulers. Once their guests are seated and they walk in, their guests will rise and remain standing until they sit on their throne. Some will even prostrate or kneel as the case may be as the monarchs walk in. The guests would have started rising from their seats immediately after members of the monarch’s advance team were seen finding their way in. Having dealt with the question of whether the traditional rulers were right or wrong to have sat down while the governor and his guest entered the venue, I will proceed to the second question. Two, can Obasanjo have handled the situation better than he did? With due respect to the former President, I believe the situation could have been handled better. I believe he could have done so differently in two ways. The former President could have sought a private audience with the monarchs after the programme and made them realise the implications of their behaviour and advise them against recurrence. Secondly, if he felt strongly that he should make his observation known publicly the way he did, I also believe that his message could have been passed without adding the twist of commanding them to stand and to sit like a class teacher would order his pupils. That was demeaning of their status. In doing that, in my view, Obasanjo only succeeded in correcting what he viewed as the wrong behaviour of the monarchs with another wrong behaviour. Despite the boldface public comments that have trailed the episode, especially from Obasanjo and traditional rulers (including those who were not even at the event), lessons must have been learnt from both divides. The traditional rulers, I suspect, will not remain seated while the state governor arrives at any event again, except for those of them who are advanced in age and cannot withstand the rigour of standing for too long. It is also my belief that Obasanjo, no matter how enraged he may be, may never again reprimand highly placed persons (not traditional rulers alone) publicly as he did in Iseyin. The Iseyin episode was a case of protocol clashing with tradition and in a situation like that, wisdom is required in handling the fallout. In the meantime, let all parties (including third parties) sit down and let sleeping dogs lie. https://punchng.com/obasanjo-when-protocol-clashes-with-tradition/?amp |
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warned that African will remain in chains till it breaks free from the shackles of the criminal enterprises of drug barons and syndicates of illicit drugs. He gave the warning in Abuja on Tuesday when he declared open the 31st meeting of the Heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies, Africa (HONLAF) at the Abuja Continental Hotel. The president, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, implored heads of national drug law enforcement agencies in Africa to renew the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in their respective countries. “If we don’t dismantle the criminal enterprises that threaten our future and build a brighter tomorrow for all Africans, we will remain in chains in a diseased and amoral world, as will our children and their children,” he told the anti-narcotics agencies’ chiefs. In his keynote address titled, ‘Rising Above the Drug Threat’, President Tinubu observed that Africa was “at the mercy of a threat that knows neither race nor geography, neither gender nor social class”. To this effect, he enjoined the heads of drug law enforcement agencies to consider the conference in Abuja as a ray of hope and a catalyst for positive change across the continent. The president, in a statement by presidential spokeman, Stanley Nkwocha, thanked them for their sacrifices in ensuring a world that is free of illicit drugs. He said, “This threat has crossed borders and destroyed societies and dreams. Without the moral commitment of the men and women in this room, this threat would have left cities, countries, and even civilizations erased. So, I must commend you for your sacrifices in the bids to keep our world drug-free, sane and safe. “This conference emphasizes your investment across borders to protect us from the devastations of drugs, a threat that only submits to the enforcement of the law. “Therefore, we are grateful to HONLAF and its partners, notably the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, for creating this avenue, for offering intelligence and drug law enforcement officials a grand opportunity to compare notes, collaborate, and build networks that would be several steps ahead of the criminal network of drug transnational organizations.” Tinubu noted that in the last couple of decades, criminal organisations had made frantic efforts to breach the security measures in African countries in a bid to pollute the minds of their citizens, adding that the anti-narcotics agencies had proven to be a thorn in their flesh. The president who doubles as the chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) stated: “But while it’s a compliment that drug-law enforcement organizations are a threat to their criminal empires, their desperation must never be taken for granted. “Without you as gatekeepers of healthy nations, humanity as we know it would have long been perverted. So, on behalf of the world, I say: thank you, thank you to all of you who have kept us from being polluted and destroyed. “For us, the commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse is not just a matter of policy; it is a moral imperative. We recognize that a population at war with drugs is not a dividend but a liability. We believe that the future of our youth, the strength of our institutions, and the well-being of our communities depend on our ability to eradicate this threat.” President Tinubu further stressed the need for the the anti-narcotics agencies to consolidate established contacts, strengthen operational existing partnerships and cooperation among them at the sub-regional and regional levels. This, he said, would make trafficking of illicit drugs and movement of drug syndicates difficult in the African continent. He continued: “So, I must appeal to you to see this gathering as an avenue for the exchange of novel ideas and the development of practical strategies. We must consolidate established contacts, operational partnerships, and cooperation to ensure that the outcomes of this four-day deliberation advance public safety and the emergence of drug-free African communities. “Our strength has always been our proactive actions to prevent any individual or group from turning our countries into a minefield of drug trafficking. So, we must prioritize prevention, education, and rehabilitation to empower our youth with knowledge and opportunities. We must steer them away from the treacherous path of drug abuse and trafficking and protect our economy from the consequences of their actions. “This administration will continue to provide the necessary support, motivation, and tools for the NDLEA to fulfill its mandate. We understand the connection between the success of the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking and the attainment of a number of goals on our socioeconomic and security agenda. “Ladies and gentlemen, I know you don’t need to be reminded of the sacred task before us. I know you are fully aware of the number of people and dreams that depend on your decisions and actions to reach their destination. But, more importantly, I know that you are up to the task.” On the choice of Nigeria for the conference, President Tinubu said it is a profound recognition of the campaign and fight against illicit drugs in the country by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Welcoming guests earlier, Chairman of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), restated the stakeholders’ commitment to addressing the world’s drug problem, noting that Nigeria will continue to uphold the objectives of multilateral organizations dedicated to combating drug trafficking and related crimes. He emphasized the need for global partnerships in addressing drug trafficking and other vices, noting that world’s drug problem cannot be effectively tackled by individual entities. Speakers at the opening session of the meeting included the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), Mr Ghada Fathi Waly; the UNODC Country Representative, Mr Oliver Stolpe; The Commandant of the National Institute for Security Studies, Mr Ayodele Adeleke, and Representative of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, among others. https://dailytrust.com/tinubu-africa-will-remain-in-chains-if-it-fails-to-break-drug-enterprises/ |

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has expressed displeasure over the ruling of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu State, that upheld the victory of Governor Peter Mbah. A 3-man tribunal, in a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Kudirat Akano, dismissed the petitions of the Labour Party and its candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, on the basis that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate is not a qualification to contest a governorship election. While weighing on matter, HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, at a press briefing yesterday in Abuja, argued if the NYSC was not a prerequisite for contesting an election then the scheme should be abolished, because, according to him, it was a waste of resources. “The decision of the Tribunal has ominous implications for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) itself. If this judgment is upheld by the Appeal Court or Supreme Court, it effectively undermines the significance of the NYSC certificate, suggesting that anyone can simply present any certificate without consequences since in the first place, it bears no qualifying relevance as interpreted or argued by this panel of judges in the Enugu gubernatorial election petition tribunal. It puts into question the very relevance of the NYSC institution in Nigeria”. Onwubiko added that judgement was a gross miscarriage of justice that undermined the principles of fairness and sent a what he called “a distressing message that political aspirants can manipulate their qualifications with impunity precisely because the Tribunal deliberately failed to address that aspect of the petition but rather played around flowery language to deodorise the panel’s decision to unleash injustice.” He therefore endorsed the decision of the Labour Party to appeal the case and called on the appellate courts to correct “this grave injustice and uphold the principles of fairness, transparency, and integrity in Nigeria’s elections, with the belief that the citizens of Enugu State and Nigeria as a whole deserve nothing less than a fair, just, and credible electoral process that reflects the true will of the people.” Meanwhile, he called the attention to a previous issue it had raised concerning the Minister of Art, Culture, and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, who concurrently serves as a Corps member and holds a federal ministerial position. “This case remains unaddressed, and the minister continues to hold office. This raises the concern of whether there is an underlying agenda within the government to erode the credibility and importance of the NYSC as an institution,” he said. Onwubiko suggested an urgent reforms in the country’s electoral and judicial systems, insisting that accountability and the rule of law should prevail over political expediency and that the tribunal’s verdict should serve as a rallying cry for a better, fairer, and more just Nigeria. https://sunnewsonline.com/enugu-guber-huriwa-picks-hole-in-tribunal-verdict/?amp |
The North Central APC Forum, under the aegis of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has warned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, against taking any actions or making moves inimical to the interest of the party or the North Central region. Chairman of the Forum, Alhaji Saleh Mandung Zazzaga, stated this in Jos, the Plateau State capital, after an emergency meeting to assess and review the election tribunal judgements and how the APC has fared so far. He said all hands must be on deck to ensure that the party performs well at the court, whether tribunal, appeal or Supreme Court. According to him, “Reports reaching us suggest that some appointive office holders like Wike are still playing double games, since he is part of the APC by appointment, while he still remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “We gathered he is still backing the PDP in many of their endeavours and activities, particularly in the post-election cases in the court. “It is high time Wike comes out clean and takes a stand on the party he really belongs to, otherwise, should his actions run contrary to that of the APC’s interest, they will not hesitate to initiate several actions against him, including legal action. “As someone who is holding an appointive position of the APC, a Lawyer by profession and someone reputed for doggedly fighting political-legal battles right from Rivers State, he (Wike) should come out strong and be seen to be supporting and strategising for victory for the candidates of the APC in the courts, at least in the North-Central Region, under which the FCT falls,” he said. Zazzaga further cautioned Wike against using his position as the FCT Minister to strategise for his 2027 presidential ambition, as some people are peddling in some quarters. He maintained that their forum will be watchful to ensure his loyalty to the nation, the APC and President Bola Tinubu is complete first, without engaging in any tactics for self-interest. The Chairman advised Wike to be cautious in FCT demolition, land revocation and other administrative policies that will have negative outcomes, as the North Central will be the first region to bear the brunt and take the full heat of any unpalatable occurrence in the FCT. He said the region is already going through many challenges, including security, and they would not want anything to aggravate the situation further. He called on all the APC leaders, supporters and members alike to support all their candidates pursuing legal post-election matters in the courts. He also urged Nigerians in general to support Tinubu, Secretary to Government of the Federation, George Akume, all the ministers and those holding appointive positions so that they can excel in their responsibilities and deliver the dividends of democracy to the nation. https://dailypost.ng/2023/09/23/apc-forum-warns-wike-against-actions-inimical-to-party-regions-interests/ |

..Bell The presidency has apologised for a claim that President Bola Tinubu is the first African leader to ring the bell at the National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations (NASDAQ). On Tuesday, shortly after performing the act, a statement released by Ajuri Ngelale, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, claimed Tinubu as the “first African president ever to receive the honour”. However, contrary to Ngelale’s claim, Jakaya Kiwete, former president of Tanzania, rang the NASDAQ closing bell in 2011. In a statement on Friday, the presidency said the error was “deeply regretted”. “We inadvertently referred to President Bola Tinubu as the first African leader to ring the bell at NASDAQ on Wednesday in New York, based on the information provided by a third-party event organiser.” “We have since found out that this information was/is incorrect as a former African leader has indeed had the privilege. The Kano State Governorship election tribunal has held that a court cannot determine membership of political party. The court made this known while ruling in favour of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the issue of sponsorship and membership of Gov Kabir Yusuf is a party internal affair. The All Progressive Congress (APC) had challenged the legitimacy of the candidature of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. APC and Nasir Gawuna, its governorship candidate, had petitioned the tribunal that Abba is not a full member of the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP), and he was not in its register when it nominated him, so he was not fit to contest. The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal had similarly dismissed APC petition to challenge Peter Obi’s membership of the Labour Party (LP). While delivering judgment, the court held that an individual’s membership of a political party is an internal matter. The decision weakened APC’s claim regarding Obi’s political affiliation and membership status of the LP. The ruling reinforced the principle that political parties have the authority to manage their internal affairs, including matters related to party membership. https://dailytrust.com/court-cant-determine-membership-of-political-party-kano-tribunal-rules/ |
