What is the talk about dignity of a graduate? Spare me abeg!

I graduated from the University in 2002 and took up a job of 3, 500 as a cybercafe attendant why? There was a purpose behind it and that purpose has brought me to where I am today.

I knew nothing about the Internet then and I was sure my path in life will have something to do with the Internet. I left that job as a Web Designer and got an idea about running an online business from there. Most of my colleagues always tell me then that I am being paid for coming to a Computer School when it should be the other way round

I enjoyed every bit of it and I left when I found out that I have enough knowledge and was not resting enuff. afterwards I took up a job as a legal secretary with a old SAN and was collecting #5, 000 in 2003. It was another learning galore over there. I left there in October 2003 and ever since I have NEVER had a job!

I believe there is always a price to pay for personal freedom to be achieved. Those of you telling this guy/dame not to take the job don't know what sacrifice is and I have learnt that if I am going to become a BETTER person in the future I have to take some risks and pay a lot of sacrifices!

Well, let me share y own story. Think it will help in your decisio akig.

When I was about going into SS1, I was a confused little boy. I discovered I could do any subject and pass excellently and didn't know whether to go for Sciece, Comercial or Art. I was seeing myself as a Doctor ad a Journalist then, so I narrowed my interest to Science and Art. I settled for Science all because y friends were there.

While at the University, readig Mech Enginrg, I discovered my writing passion is still there and I was aking use of it seriously. When I write to my friends, I paint my words to make the feel as if they are right where I am.

I later got into computing and ore confusion was coming into my life. One of my first love was Sport and I was also seeing myself going into Sport Journalism. When I left school, I started discussing with a TV producer on starting a TV Sport Programme, idea was solely mine, but the money to start off wasn't there. So I decided to have a rethink.

I started a Web Design biz with the little I have and I later moved into having my writtings online. I started a otivational website, not Naijamotivatio.com, and the result blew my mind. Since then, I have been able to combine my love for Computer and Writing together.

If I can, you too CAN!

Those of us that saw NYSC as a waste of time and didn't bother serving, did we actually miss anything at all?

Come to think of it, why should NYSC be used as a basis for getting employed? Still don't get it.

Somebody once told me, if you want to register ur biz, you will need ur NYSC certificate , I was like "say what?"

Well, didn't bother serving and not regreting anything!

Action is another word we all need to understand. There are so many people dreaming of the day they will start pursuing their dreams, but they wait too long dreaming and nothing happens.

Nairaland wouldn't have been in existence if all Seun did is dreaming. Your dream business will not come to reality if you don't do something NOW! There is no better time to do anything than NOW! It is all you have gotten.

As you rightly said, it is a matter of perspective. I have always promised myself that I won't EVER deceive myself. I gained NOTHING, academically, in the University. Imagine a Mechanical Engineering Student, NEVER doing any practical while in school? All the practicals we were supposed to do for the whole duration of my course, were given to us to do under two weeks and after writing our final paper!

I was brought up to value hard work, but I got to the University to see that pocket pays more than brain. That first shocked me and before I could recover, I have lost interest in everything.

Regret may not be the right word anyway, I would have picked going to a computer school over the University going by what I know now. We all have our days of ignorance though and I thank God he helped me discover what I have been carrying inside myself all along.

If not for personal discovery and His grace, I would have been a frustrated person!

If others enjoyed their stay in the system for any reason, Good Luck! You know i said CHOICE is all that matters.

A lot needs to be done by our government to salvage the situation of unemployment. Graduates should be empowered financially after graduation. Look at the NYSC Sheme: Graduates came out of the scheme to become poorer than the were before their enrolment into it. How can you give somebody money with right hand only to collect it back with left hand?The money is just for them  to take care of themselves throughout the period, that is all. I have no doubts that the scheme favours those who could influence their posting. I am suggesting that the total sum of money  earmarked per person for the one year period be given to each of our graduates after the three-week orientation camping. This will go a long way to empower them. No more posting to the place of primary assignments. With this, they can start something.

We all have a choice! A choice to attend the NYSC or not.

Well let me tell you, I regretted spending 5 years of my life in the University gaining nothing and I made up my mind NEVER to serve! Why should I waste another year on youth service? I was persuaded severely, told of some abstract consequences but I stood my ground.

So if some people decide to go and waste their time and lives by going into one bush or where ever to do something that won't influence their lives in any way, it is their choice.

I have always believed this life is all about CHOICE! You choose your choice and the choices you choose, determines what you get out of life.

this is a very " high' motivational write up. but how can one look inward without having the means to do so. the other day a friend came to me for advice about how to go on in life as an applicant. i advice him to at least be a bit enterprise so as to get some food on the table. next day he came back to inform me that he have an idea about a business that will need about five hundred thousand as start-up capital. He now want me to assist him to raise the money towards the project. what do you want me to say to such person?

There are so many things he could start small unless if he is looking for excuses for not starting.

I started my Web designing biz with just 5k! I used the money for publicity. I had no computer and any other thing.

I could have waited till I was able to raise 50K for a computer b4 I could start!

When you look for excuses for not doing worthy things, you will always have ENOUGH! But you have made up your mind not to give excuses any room in your life, you will start something, no matter how small it is.

Lovely motivational write-up. but i must say its easier said than done. Don't get me wrong your points are true and can be useful for those looking for jobs. However, we can't shy away from the fact that the system is bad.

The fact that system is bad, doesn't me it should hold us down. It has NEVER being easier for anybody and the mindset we ought to have is,

Despite the system being bad, are there no people making something? Why do the Lebanese keep trooping here if trully our system is BAD?

me think it is a mindest thing. Whatever you think is real, becomes your reality. Nothing should hold us down; not our environment, society or even our background. The only person that can hold you back is YOU!

I just finished reading a book, Attitude is Everything, By Jeff Keller and I learnt the problem of man is the problem from his mind. It is all an attitude thing. If the Lebanese could see gold right on our streets, why not us? Isn't there something wrong with us?

Please let's us all ponder on this.

Great post! It is an awareness that we all need to have at this present time. I have heard so many people talk about being unemployed when there are so much to do!

I remembered when I was still in school some years back and was wondering whether there was going to be any job for me in the labour market. I was comparing the level of education I was getting as a Mechanical Engineering student and what will be required of me outside, I used to be afraid until God came to my rescue.

I discovered there is something inside of me GREATER than my certificate and ever since I have never looked BACK!

What I have inside has being able to take me to where my certificate wouldn't have and whenever I looked back, I always thank God for helping make the decision NEVER to get a job! I can't imagine what life would have been for me if I have to wake up as early as 5:30am and come back prolly 10 at night and continue that cycle every given day of my life

I am looking for a way to post an audio done by Robert Kiyosaki online. it is kind of heavy (48MB). When I eventually get that done, I will share it with every one. it is a must-hear for us all.

Me think there are so many rivalries to point at.

One of the toughest is Real Madrid and Barcelona.

This is a rivalry that transcends the whole of Spanish lives. It goes beyond just football. I was watching a documetary some years back about the two teams and I discovered that the people who formed Barca were in the opposition while those who formed Real were loyal to the government so whenever they play it is something like the government VS the opposition.

There has been times in the past that Barca's fans have accused the Spanish officials of supporting Real all because of the government.

I am not sure the whole thing is still as fanatical as it was in the past. The first time Real fans will ever salute a Barca player was last year and the only person worthy of that honour happens to be the KING himself, RONALDINHO!

How many people remember what happened to Luis Figo at the Nou Camp the first season he went to Real? That was an abomination! Luis knew what he entered into at that meeting. He was harrassed right from the airport till the last minute of that game.

I have been an ardent follower of Naija's politics for some years now and I want to tell you that it has been a worthwhile experience.

Since the advent of our "nascent" democracy, it has been one form of comedy or the other and I have really enjoyed them all while they lasted.

One of the biggest comedies of this democracy is the issue of whether we have received the promised dividends of democracy or not. So many have voiced their opinions on this and this issue at times lead to unending arguments. Nairaland has not been an exception in this game. We have the Pro-Obasanjos and those who are die-hard anti-Obasanjo. Which camp do I belong to?

Well, looking back at the two terms that this nascent democracy, me think President Obasanjo has TRIED in so many ways. We have NEVER had it so good as a country. Ha, ha, why are we so ungrateful as a people. Baba Iyabo is trying his best and yet our eyes have been blinded to all the good works the Ota farmer is doing.

Before Baba came into power, there was nothing like GSM but Baba brought us GSM! Billions of Naira have been made off us as GSM users and yet we have to beg the operators to make their tariffs customer-friendly. We have to pay through our noses in order to make phone calls. In other places, the customer is always the king but in our dear country, it is otherwise. As a result of our plea to these vultures, we have been turned to night owls. We have to stay awake all night to enjoy free calls! I trust my people; they grabbed this dividend of democracy with all their might. I wonder how many will eventually be thrown out of employment, when all they do is sleep during the day to prepare for their free night calls.

The payment of debt is another area where I think Baba has really tried o. All thanks to him, we are debt free now. Our external reserve is being shored up to the detriment of our internal progress. I needed to be educated on the need to increase our external reserve when it has no effect on the citizenry. Tell an average man on the street we have billions of $$$ in our external reserve and hear what he will have to tell you. Mind you, we have to impress other countries and in this aspect, we have done so well. All we need do is tell them we increased our external reserve from $4b to $37b and that will really tell them poverty has reduced so much in our land.

This nascent democracy has produced so employments for the unemployed and this can also be attributed to Baba's ingenuity. The comedy business received a boost when Obasanjo came in. How many comedians did we have before this democracy was given birth to? The comedians saw so many comedies going on in high places and they decided to follow cue. It was first Buharigate then Torontogate came in.

How many of us remember the comedian Ojo Maduekwe. When this man was the minister of Transportation, he told us we need not rely so much on petrol-consuming vehicle; we can make do with bicycles! He decided to set an example, but he was lucky to just escape with a broken arm on his first day of riding a bicycle to office. Who needs an Alli Baba or Basket Mouth when all you need is watch NTA News and watch unlimited comedy. I got tired of laughing and I decided not to watch NTA News any longer.

Talking about comedians in high places, I remember the first term when the issue of "Ghana-Must-Go" came up. ICPC has been formed then but yet, the people behind the ugly incidents couldn't be traced. The "unseen" hands were so perfect that they didn't leave any trace for them to be caught and brought to book. It is only in Nigeria that we use corruption to fight corruption. To catch a thief, you also have to be a thief or behave like one. Little wonder we got to a stage where our leaders are embarrassing us on the media, by exposing their dirty pasts. Do we even need to be told all these things before we know? I don't think SO!

Still talking about employment, have you notice the increase in the high demands for political jobbers especially thugs? Politicians always have somebody to deal with and there is need to employ some people to handle that. The good thing is that those who qualified for those kinds of jobs need not have any education at all, so it will be a waste of time investing in our educational sector. What of praise singers, they are very much in high demand. They also fall into the same category as the thugs; they need no academic qualifications. To make this set of people more desirable, their take home is not much, just #200 - #500! Why bother to create employment for a graduate that will be waiting for nothing less than #50k at the end of the month?

Can you imagine the good roads that we have to show as the dividend of democracy? World Class roads! The Benin-Ore road was so good that it can now swallow a luxurious bus! We need to give a standing ovation to our president and his team for a wonderful job. Somebody asked me if the gully on that road happened in a day and I was like may be. If the decay had been happening over time, then somebody would have noticed it. This is a road that has been contracted out for some years now and is yet to receive any attention. How many more of our roads are in such a wonderful condition? Gone are the days when armed robbers need to throw a spring at you so that they can rob you. The way things are, they just need to lie in wait at one of these gullies.

Privatisation is one the major achievements of this government. President Obasanjo need not be reminded that other governments are still going to come after him. He has already seen himself as Naija’s life president so why worry about all these properties. The best thing is to dispose off all of them to the “not-so-private” hands. This government has succeeded in giving out nearly all the public properties/organizations to those that deserved them and that is a plus to Baba. Why should government have any property to their credit when there will be “credible” individuals/organizations that will manage them properly?

Obasanjo's achievements are just so much that I won't be able to mention all of them in just one post, but I think Baba has tried in our Educational, Agricultural and social sector. May be I will need to expand on all his achievements in all these areas later. If you think you can help me complete the task of celebrating our worthy leader, I won’t mind.

So to all the haters who think Baba has not tried, PLEASE learnt to shut your trap!
