A former governor of Borno
State, Ali Modu Sheriff, widely
accused of sponsoring Boko
Haram insurgents in Nigeria,
may be lobbying for the release
of the Chad-bound cargo
aircraft confiscated in Kano for
transporting large consignment
of military hardware, PREMIUM
TIMES can report today.

Sources at the Aminu Kano
International Airport, where the
plane is currently detained, said
Mr. Sheriff visited the Kano
airport at about 10 p.m. on
Saturday and held discussions
with some officials on the
possibility of releasing the
aircraft.
Our sources said on arriving the
airport, officials allowed the
former governor a secret tour of
the aircraft, during which he
inspected its consignments.
“I was there and I saw him and
two airport security officials
accompanying him to inspect
the plane. I saw the black
helicopters and two bullet proof
SUVs,” one of our sources said.
“I also heard him (Mr. Sheriff)
say verbal directive had been
given from Abuja for the release
of the plane but that authorities
of the airport were insisting on
written directive.”
Mr. Sheriff could not be reached
to comment for this story. His
known mobile telephone
number was switched off for
several hours that PREMIUM
TIMES called Saturday. He is also
yet to reply a text message sent
to him.
The Manager of the Kano
Airport, a Mr. Adamu, told
PREMIUM TIMES he is in Abuja
and was therefore unaware of
Mr. Sheriff’s tour of the detained
aircraft.
The former Borno governor is a
close ally of both the Nigerian
president, and the government
of Chad – the plane’s final
destination.
A 2010 Intelligence report by a
Nigerian security agency
suggested that Mr. Sheriff was
personally involved in the
recruitment, training and
dispatch of Boko Haram
fighters, under the full cover of
Idris Deby, the Chadian
president.
Chad is Nigeria’s neighbour.
Laying on Nigeria’s northeast
shoulder, and sharing long
distances of unregulated
borders, it is considered a
window to safety for Boko
Haram fighters.
An Australian negotiator
engaged by the Nigerian
government to bring Boko
Haram insurgents to the
negotiation table, Stephen
Davies, also spoke of how the
insurgents named Mr. Sheriff as
one of their sponsors during his
conversations with the
terrorists.
Airport officials told PREMIUM
TIMES Mr. Sheriff’s verbal
pressures to let the plane go
was turned down. He was asked
to get written permission from
“ogas at the top” – authority
high up in Abuja – our sources
said.
After inspecting the plane and
holding discussions with local
officials, Mr. Sheriff reportedly
left for Abuja, Nigeria’s capital
city, in a private jet at about
11:30 p.m. Saturday.
Security operatives at the Kano
Airport had seized the plane
when it landed at the facility at
about 2a.m. Saturday as a result
of technical problems. Crew
members of the airplane were
immediately detained while
investigations continued,
officials said.
“Security has since been beefed
up at the airport in order to
ensure proper investigation,”
the officials added. The General
Manager, Communications,
Federal Airport Authority of
Nigeria, FAAN, Yakubu Datti,
confirmed the seizure of the
plane.
He said the pilot sought
permission to land at the airport
after the plane developed
problems. “The plane had a
technical problem and the pilot
sought (for) permission to land
at the airport’’, he said.
Mr. Datti said security agencies
had since commenced
investigation into the matter.
Security sources told PREMIUM
TIMES the plane was travelling
to N’djamena, the capital of
Chad. PR Nigeria, an agency
known for distributing press
statements on behalf of the
Nigerian military, later circulated
a statement saying the aircraft
contained “a chopper tucked in
it”.
“… Intense investigation is
ongoing including using
diplomatic means to unravel the
mission of the aircraft, its origin
and destination,” the statement
said. This is the third time since
2009 that planes loaded with
arms would be arrested in Kano,
our correspondent says. The
detained planes were later
released after investigations.
The destination of the latest
aircraft has however raised
concerns amid increasing
worries in Nigeria over Chad’s
alleged role in the Boko Haram
insurgency plaguing Nigeria’s
northeast. The plane and its
consignment was initially
thought to originate from
Russia but the Russian Embassy
in Abuja issued a statement
denying ownership of the
AH-124-100 heavy military
transport aircraft.
Air cargo experts describe it as
one of the biggest serial and
strategic heavy lifters in the
world. It is intended for the
transportation of heavy and
oversized cargo and various
special-purpose vehicles.
Although in commercial use too,
the Russian military is beloved
to own 14 of the AN-124-100
version of the jumbo cargo jet,
manufactured by the Russian
Antonov.

A man was arrested after he
was caught having sex with a
donkey.
However, the man told a court
that he paid a woman for sex,
but she somehow turned into a
donkey.
28-year-old Sunday Moyo of
Mandava, Zvishavane,
Zimbabwe, was arrested after
being accused of bestiality.
The man was brought before
Magistrate Mildred Matuvi.
A police officer on routine patrol
caught Moyo performing a
sexual act on the animal inside
his yard about 4:00 a.m. on a
Sunday morning.
The donkey had been tied and
was unable to escape the abuse.
In court, Moyo admitted
committing the crime, but told
the judge a story that got
everyone in court laughing.
Moyo said that he did not realize
he was having sex with the
donkey until the officer stopped
him.
“I had hired a prostitute at
DownTown night club and paid
her ZAR220 ($20) for her
services. I do not know how she

Explosion rocks PDP secretariat in Cross River

An explosion believed to be a bomb rocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat along the Murtala Mohammed in Calabar, Cross River State, on Monday.

The incident which occurred at about 5:30am rocked several buildings in the vicinity.

Our correspondent who visited the scene at about 5: 50am saw heavily armed policemen and soldiers trying to restore order in the area.

A resident, who lives nine houses away from the secretariat where the incident occurred, said at the time he felt his house shaking.

“I heard a loud bang and everywhere started shaking. I thought the house was going to collapse,” he said.

In a compound that shares the same fence with the back of the secretariat, several glass doors and windows were shattered.

While speaking with one of those staying in the compound at about 10am, some policemen across the fence in the PDP secretariat ordered our correspondent to leave immediately.

A couple of them jumped over the fence with their guns and threatened to smash the correspondent’s phone and deal with him if he did not leave immediately.

The state chairman of the party, Mr. John Okon, said, “I understand they threw in a bomb or dynamite or something. The police are there and the anti-bomb squad is on the way. We would not be able to use the secretariat for the ward congresses. We would be using the Presidential Lodge.

All the electoral officers are collecting their materials and going to the field. The windows and other things inside the office were destroyed.”

A federal court in Abuja has freed Aminu Oguche, the suspected mastermind of the Nyanya bomb attack in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported. The court struck out a two-count terrorism charge against Mr. Ogwuche on Monday, after months of trial for the April 2014 attack which killed more than 70 people. The court hinged its decision on lack of diligent prosecution by the state. Mr. Ogwuche, a suspected Boko Haram member, was accused by the Nigerian government of being behind the attack. The blast at the Nyanya Motor Park occurred during morning peak hours as residents were hurrying to work. The government said Mr. Ogwuche fled to Sudan after coordinating the attack. He was later repatriated to Nigeria to face charges. Details of Monday’s ruling are sketchy and will be brought in our subsequent updates.

Aum Shinrikyo The Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo
(Supreme Truth) was founded out
of the Tokyo apartment of Shoko
Asahara (inset) in 1984 as a yoga
meditation class. By 1989 it was
granted official status as a religious organization by the Japanese
government. By 1995 the group
claimed to have over 40,000
members worldwide. The cult's
beliefs combine Yoga, Buddhism,
Hinduism, Christianity and the writings of Nostradamus. Asahara
believed himself to be Japan's fully
enlightened "Christ," who could take
away sin and would save his
followers from the nuclear
Armageddon he predicted. In the 1980s the increasingly
controversial cult was accused of
forcing members to donate money,
holding members captive and of
committing at least one murder of
one who tried to leave the cult, but retained some popular acceptance.
In the 1990s Asahara adopted the
view that the U.S. would attack
Japan and begin the End Times.
The cult's violent tendencies
escalated, and they began to stockpile weapons and military
hardware. By 1993 members were
manufacturing sarin and VX gas.
In March 1995, Asahara received
word that the police were planning
on raiding his facility. In an effort to distract them, on March 20 he

U.F.O. religion that fused some
Christian apocalyptic thought with
concepts popular in science fiction.
Followers believed that the Earth
was going to be destroyed in a great "recycling" and that the only
way to survive was to leave the
planet by evolving to the next level.
The cult was founded in the 1970s
by Marshall Applewhite (pictured)
after he had visions of himself in the Book of Revelation, then as an
evolved human relative of Jesus,
and finally as an alien being in
human form. The cult believed that
in order to be eligible to ascend to
the next level of existence, members would have to give up all
things human: possessions, money,
jobs, individuality, sexuality,
friends, family and even life itself.
The members decided that if they
killed themselves at precisely the right moment they would not die,
but would be taken up to an alien
spacecraft hidden by the tail of
Comet Hale-Bopp then passing
near Earth. Interestingly the group
funded itself by doing web development. On March 26, 1997,
the bodies of Applewhite and 38 of
his followers were found dead in the
cult's rented mansion. Police
believe that they killed themselves
in groups over the course of three days. The cultists ingested lethal
doses of phenobarbital, though
autopsies showed the presence of
cyanide and arsenic as well, and
put plastic bags over their heads.
All the dead were found lying in their bunks dressed identically,
down to their "Heaven's Gate Away
Team" armbands.

satanic cult and gang called The
Chicago Rippers that is suspected
in the 1981 and 1982
disappearances of as many as 18
women. One victim, a teenage prostitute they had left for dead,
was able to give a description of her
attackers, which led to their arrest.
Once in custody all but Gecht
confessed to the murders and to
having removed one breast from each sacrificial victim, having taken
turns raping the open wound,
having masturbated onto the
breast, chopped it up and eaten it
while Gecht read verses from The
Satanic Bible. Though the others were willing to
implicate Gecht, investigators were
never able to definitively connect
him to the murders. He was
sentenced to 120 years in prison
for kidnapping, rape and mutilation of the prostitute. Andrew Kokoraleis
and Edward Spreitzer received the
death sentence for their roles in the
strangulation murder of Lorraine
Borowski, 21, a secretary whose
mutilated body was found in a cemetery. Andrew Kokoraleis was
executed in 1999. Spreitzer's death
sentence was commuted in 2003.
Thomas Kokoraleis received a life
sentence and may be released on
