Politics / President Buhari Approves Appointment Of Four Supreme Court Judges From North by boman2014: 1:50pm On Aug 14, 2020 |
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of four Supreme Court Judges from Northern Nigeria. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Tanko Muhammad, made the announcement in a statement, adding that those appointed include Hon. Justice Tijjani Abubakar (North-East Zone), Hon. Justice Mohammed L. Garba (North-West Zone), Hon. Justice Abdu Aboki (North-West Zone), Hon. Justice Mohammed M. Saulawa. Three heads of court, 11 judges for state high courts and four Kadis of Sharia Court of Appeal were also appointed. SaharaReporters gathered that in October 2019, the National Judicial Council recommended the appointment of four justices of the Court of Appeal as justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria but President Buhari refused to forward their names to the Supreme Court for confirmation because the North-West geopolitical zone did not have a candidate on the list at the time. One of the newly confirmed judges, Justice Mohammed Garba, headed the 2019 Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and that his inclusion on the list is said to be a compensation for his role in ensuring that Buhari returned elected. It was also reliably gathered that the newly appointed judges will now be on same level with those from the Southern part of the country as a result of this development. http://saharareporters.com/2020/08/14/president-buhari-approves-appointment-four-supreme-court-judges-north |

Politics / Court Orders Return Of Saraki’s Houses by boman2014: 11:51am On Jul 17, 2020 |
The Lagos Division of the Federal High Court has ordered the return of two houses belonging to Bukola Saraki, a former Senate President, which were previously forfeited to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Giving the order on Thursday, the Federal Court judge, Rilwan Aikawa, said there is no sufficient basis in the EFCC application for the permanent forfeiture of Mr Saraki’s houses. The judge, in December 2019, granted an interim forfeiture of Mr Saraki’s houses located at Plots No. 10 and No. 11 Abdulkadir Road, GRA, Ilorin, Kwara State, through an ex parte motion filed by the EFCC. The EFCC told the court that Mr Saraki acquired the properties through proceeds of unlawful activities during his administration as the governor of Kwara State. The agency, in its application, said there is “a damning intelligence report, showing monumental fraud perpetrated in the treasury of the Kwara State Government between 2003 and 2011.” Justice Aikawa, while delivering a judgement on EFCC’s application for permanent forfeiture, upheld the earlier judgement and ordered the release of the properties on grounds that the motion lacked basis. Mr Saraki had resisted the forfeiture of his Ilorin houses on several occasions, saying the act was a witch hunt by the EFCC. “The EFCC’s claim that the Ilorin property was built by any proceeds of fraud is outrightly false. One can only see that EFCC is playing politics and spreading falsehood in its cheap attempt to witch-hunt and intimidate a perceived enemy, ” Mr Saraki said. Mr Saraki said the Ilorin property was built partly by the Kwara State Government pursuant to the Third Schedule of the Governor and Deputy Governor (Payment of Pension) Law 2010 while he funded the remaining cost of the building with his personal funds. During the Thursday Judgement, Justice Aikawa said he could not find his way through to grant the permanent forfeiture order. He ordered the release of Mr Saraki’s Ilorin houses. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/403446-court-orders-return-of-sarakis-houses.html |

Education / The Movie Is Entitled Or The Movie Is Titled? by boman2014: 7:17am On Jul 14, 2020 |
When you are referring to the title of a book, what do you say : entitled or titled ? Is it that the book is, for instance , entitled You Must Set forth at Dawn or the book is titled You Must Set forth at Dawn ? Or is it a matter of preference, a way of saying both are correct? In most cases , I believe, the last consideration is the case – a lot of people believe the words mean the same thing. It is true that they are homonyms to a large extent as they are largely spelt and pronounced alike . At least , they perfectly rhyme. Both are also adjectives in the sense under consideration. But that is how far their similarities go. In terms of meaning, they convey clearly different senses . The implication , therefore , is that they cannot be interchangeably used, further suggesting that one of them cannot be used to refer to the title of a book. What does ‘ entitled ’ mean ? Cambridge Dictionary defines it as ‘ feeling that you have the right to do or have what you want without having to work for it or deserve it, just because of who you are .’ Here is the example it gives: These kids are spoiled , entitled , self-absorbed and apathetic. On the other hand , the dictionary defines ‘titled’ as ‘ with the title of’: Reed wrote a novel about Sade titled When the Whip Comes Down. Based on the definitions and examples , it is clear that the correct expression is ‘titled’ : The movie is entitled , The Trial of Mr Magu. ( Wrong) The movie is titled The Trial of Mr Magu. ( Correct ) What is the title of the publication ? It is entitled Endless Wait. ( Wrong) What is the title of the publication ? It is titled Endless Wait. ( Correct ) Forward, foreward , foreword The other time we discussed creative works ( about three weeks ago) , we focused on how to review them. Now, building on the issue of ‘ entitled ’ and ‘ titled ’ , let us look at other terms in the register of publishing. One of such you need to be careful handling is ‘ foreword’. It can easily be confused with ‘ forward ’ , not just because the latter is a common expression ,but because it also means being in the front and ‘ foreword’ is always at the beginning of a book. The third element , ‘ foreward’ , is simply wrongly spelt . Writers, editors, critics and reviewers should particularly be careful with ‘ foreword’ because there have been books published with ‘ Forward’ conspicuously posing where ‘ Foreword ’ should be . https://punchng.com/the-movie-is-entitled-or-the-movie-is-titled/ |

Health / Brazilian Man Becomes First Person To Be 'cured’ Of HIV With Drugs Alone by boman2014: 11:38pm On Jul 07, 2020 |
A Brazilian man may be the first person to be "cured" of HIV after receiving an intensive experimental drug therapy. The 34-year-old, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2012, is the first person to maintain long- term HIV remission after being given a year- long course of intensive anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs. The man received the treatment alongside four other patients but was the only one to have been “cured”. The researchers, who unveiled their findings at this week’s virtual International Aids Society conference, warn that further analysis is needed. The patient - only the third person ever to have been "cured of the disease" - was put on standard ARV treatment two months after his diagnosis and then enrolled on a clinical trial where he received standard ARTs as well as the HIV drugs dolutegravir and marivoc. He was also given nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B. Nicotinamide fights part of the virus that infects cells and causes them to self destruct as well as activating the immune system. The patient received the intensive therapy for a year and then was taken off treatment in March 2019. Since then he has been tested every three weeks and a year later he still has no detectable viral load or any antibodies. From tragedy to hope | A history of HIV breakthroughs Professor Sharon Lewin, an HIV and infectious diseases expert at the University of Melbourne who was not involved in the research, said the fact that the patient has no antibodies was significant. “When someone is infected with a virus they make antibodies. And antibodies don’t budge, even when you’re on treatment and there’s no detectable viral load. But this showed he had no antibodies which is supportive of him being cured,” she said. However, she added that it was important to remember that this was just one patient and the findings were being published as a case report rather than a full academic paper. “It’s interesting, but it’s hard to know how significant it is when it’s just a single case. I’d also like to know what happened to the other patients,” she said. Dr Ricardo Diaz of the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, who led the study, said he was "trying to wake up the virus" and boost the immune system's ability to eliminate it once it's flushed out of hiding. "We can't search the entire body, but by the best evidence, we do not have infected cells," Dr Diaz said. "I think it's very promising. This patient might be cured," but it will take more time to know, he added. The man was diagnosed with HIV in October 2012 and was then put on treatment just two months later. Patients who go on treatment soon after acquiring HIV can quickly bring their virus under control, said Prof Lewin. “So it’s hard to work out whether this person had the virus under control because we don't know when he acquired HIV or whether the addition of extra ARVs and nicotinamide made a difference,” she said. However, if this approach is shown to work in more patients it would be a significant breakthrough . Currently, people with HIV have to be on treatment for the rest of their lives to suppress their viral load. The treatment is a functional "cure" as it means patients have undetectable levels of virus and cannot pass it onto others and can live long and healthy lives. However, treatment is expensive, people need to take medication every day and drug resistance has started to develop. 37 million people worldwide live with HIV “Everyone wants to find a way to allow someone to stop treatment safely. If even three out of 20 patients had the same response to this treatment it would be exciting,” said Prof Lewin. This is not the first time scientists have claimed to have found a way of eradicating the virus . The first talk of an HIV “cure” was in 2007 when Timothy Brown - dubbed the Berlin Patient - underwent a bone marrow transplant to treat leukaemia. More than 10 years later he remains free of the disease. The second person to be “cured” of the disease was Adam Castillejo, who made headlines last year as the "London Patient". Mr Castillejo, who chose to waive his anonymity in March as he wanted to be an “ambassador of hope”, was treated with stem cells from a donor with genetic resistance to the disease by specialists at University College London and Imperial College in 2016. Since then he has shown no sign of the virus. Deborah Gold, chief executive of National AIDS Trust, said the latest research was interesting. “The results from one of the participants could lead to promising developments in finding a cure for HIV. Knowledge is key in ending HIV and we praise the work being done by researchers around the world to improve our knowledge and understanding about HIV. “However, whilst work continues to explore the implications of this isolated case, we must remain focused on the tools we already have to stop acquisition of HIV. “We can prevent HIV acquisition by improving access to the highly effective HIV prevention drug PrEP. Modern HIV treatment means people living with HIV can live healthily into old age, and once on effective HIV treatment cannot pass on the virus. Our focus in the UK and internationally must therefore be to provide easy access to PrEP and HIV testing, and universal access to free HIV treatment.” https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/brazilian-man-may-first-person-cured-hiv-drugs-alone/ |
