Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has been appointed to coach Ivory Coast at the World Cup in South Africa.

An announcement was made on Sunday, with Mark Hughes and former Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster also coming under consideration for the role.

A statement from the country's football federation said: "He's an experienced coach who has proved himself.

"His objective is to ensure an honourable participation at the upcoming World Cup."

Bosnian coach Vahid Halilhodzic was sacked last month after the Elephants failed to reach the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Ivory Coast, led by Chelsea's Didier Drogba, are drawn with Brazil, Portugal and North Korea in Group G at the World Cup in South Africa in June and July.

Swede Eriksson joined England in 2001 after a successful club management career in Europe, including an Italian championship with Lazio in 2000.

He led England to two World Cup quarter-finals but the high point of his reign was the 5-1 win over Germany in the qualifiers for Japan and South Korea only months after he had taken over.

Since leaving England after the 2006 World Cup, he managed Manchester City, Mexico and was director of football at Notts County.

No details were given about the length of Eriksson's contract.

MOSCOW – Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up on Moscow's subway system as it was jam-packed with rush-hour passengers Monday, killing at least 35 people and wounding 38, the city's mayor and other officials said.

Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Svetlana Chumikova said 23 people were killed in an explosion shortly before 8 a.m. at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow. The station is underneath the building that houses the main offices of the Federal Security Service, or FSB, the KGB's main successor agency.

A second explosion hit the Park Kultury station about 45 minutes later. Chumikova said at least 12 were dead there. The ministry later said 38 people were injured.

Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov said both explosions were believed to have been set off on the trains.

"The first data that the FSB has given us is that there were two female suicide bombers," Luzhkov told reporters at the Park Kultury site.

The blasts practically paralyzed movement in the city center as emergency vehicles sped to the stations.

In the Park Kultury blast, the bomber was wearing a belt packed with plastic explosive and set it off as the train's doors opened, said Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia's top investigative body. The woman has not been identified, he told reporters.

The last confirmed terrorist attack in Moscow was in August 2004, when a suicide bomber blew herself up outside a city subway station, killing 10 people.

Responsibility for that blast was claimed by Chechen rebels and suspicion in Monday's explosions is likely to focus on them and other separatist groups in the restive North Caucasus region.

In February, Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov warned in an interview on a rebel-affiliated Website that "the zone of military operations will be extended to the territory of Russia , the war is coming to their cities."

Umarov also claimed his fighters were responsible for the November bombing of the Nevsky Express passenger train that killed 26 people en route from Moscow to St. Petersburg.

The Moscow subway system is one of the world's busiest, carrying around 7 million passengers on an average workday, and is a key element in running the sprawling and traffic-choked city.

Helicopters hovered over the Park Kultury station area, which is near the renowned Gorky Park.

Passengers, many of them in tears, streamed out of the station, one man exclaiming over and over "This is how we live!"

Following the injuries sustained by the Cross River State Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke, on the mountainous Obudu Ranch Resort, the governor has reportedly been flown abroad for further medical treatment.

Imoke was flown to an undisclosed European country for treatment as[b] the crash is reported to have seriously affected his health, “especially around the ankle region,”[/b]a P.MNEWS source disclosed.

He was earlier flown to the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja where doctors recommended his treatment abroad following the severity of the injuries he sustained during the crash.

The governor was involved in a road mishap while ascending the mountainous Obudu Ranch Resort at about 2 a.m after he had attended two funeral obsequies in Obudu in the northern senatorial zone of the state.

After the event, it was too late for the governor to use the cable car which had closed during the day, hence his trip in the SUV in the early hours of that fateful day to rest at the Resort.

Impeccable sources disclosed that Senator Imoke’s driver who was on duty complained that he was feeling sleepy but was urged by a superior official to drive the SUV as there was no alternative.

The driver, according to our source, was told to use water to wash his face to prevent the sleep, which he did but that did not help matters. The driver still fell asleep and eventually lost control of the SUV in which the governor was, causing it to skid off the snaky road and crashing several times into the steel barriers by the side of the road, thus causing him to sustain serious injuries.

The driver and the chief security officer to the governor did not sustain serious injuries but Imoke’s case was terrible. The governor’s car according, to sources, was badly mangled.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Patrick Ugbe, who had earlier reported the accident to newsmen, declined to speak on Imoke’s trip abroad.

The Deputy Governor, Barrister Efiok Cobham, has been acting as governor, swearing in board members as approved by the state House of Assembly.
