Popular Nigerian doctor based in the United States, Prof. Maurice Iwu, has claimed that Garcinia kola, better known as Bitter Kola in West Africa, may be a possible drug against the deadly Ebola virus. Bitter Kola, a staple health fruit in Nigeria, was reported to have stopped the virus at test tube experiments. An Inquirer Washington Bureau reported Iwu, who made this discovery, as saying that the much needed cure could be sourced from the same African forests where the disease was identified. Iwu is a doctor with a combination of folk-remedy expertise and a doctorate in Western pharmacology. He is also the Executive Director of the Bioresources Development and Conservation Programme, and a consultant at Walter Reed Army Hospital in suburban Washington. Surprisingly, one of the top infectious-disease laboratories in the US was said to have tested the fruit, and said that Bitter Kola passed the crucial and difficult first hurdle... A virus expert who heads the effort at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Fort Detrick, Maryland, to find antiviral drugs to fight exotic diseases, John Huggins, said, “It certainly is a promising compound. So far, it’s made it through all the gates that it has been sent through.” But there are many more tests to be done, first on mice in the next few months, and eventually primates, before it would be used on people, Huggins said. Only one of 20 prospective drugs that pass the test-tube test makes it onto the market. A Professor of Microbiology at Washington University in St. Louis, Lawrence Gelb, said, “I would be – and am – very sceptical. But you can’t be an outright cynic; eventually some (prospective drug) works.” The reason bitter kola may have an edge over other types of drugs that work in lab tests is that many drugs often prove toxic to people and animals in subsequent testing, whereas bitter cola has been used for centuries, and has gotten federal approval as a safe dietary supplement, Head of Applied Research at Missouri Botanical Garden, who has tried to develop plants as medicine in the past, Jim Miller, said. - Surce: http://9ja-ninja..co.uk/2014/08/bitter-kola-possible-cure-for-ebola-us.html#more |

Osun State rulling party, The All Progressives Congress (APC) has cried foul, over a plan they uncovered involving an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) officials to rig the up coming election inn the state. INEC and PDP have come out and dismissed that there has ever been such a plan. According to APC, the plan involved an INEC IT staff handing over electoral register for the state to a special assistant to a top PDP national official. The APC National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in a recent statement, had said: ’’For those who may see this as outlandish, they should recall that an INEC official tampered with the voters register used during the last gubernatorial election in Anambra State to remove the names of many voters”. APC said that this might be one of the reasons INEC is delaying the issuing Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) to registered voters, especially those who are APC members in the state. The truth is that the PDP knows it cannot win a free and fair election in Osun State. Everything so far points to the fact that our party will win by a landslide if the election is free, fair, credible and transparent. In fact, a highly-credible opinion poll carried out by the globally-recognized TNS-RMS shows that the APC leads among voters in the state by 73%, compared to a paltry 19% for the PDP”, it stated. ’’ Apparently stunned by the reality on the ground, as against the propaganda by the PDP, the party’s candidate, Iyiola Omisore, quickly conjured his own opinion poll, purportedly carried out by USAID, showing that he is leading the APC candidate and incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola. ’’ Fortunately, USAID has denied carrying out any opinion poll in Osun State, thus putting a lie to the PDP’s claim. There is no better indication of desperation than this.’’ INEC has always come under criticisms for not conducting credible elections across the country. After the 21 June, 2014 governorship election in Ekiti state, the All Progressives Congress, APC, had accused the electoral body for not conducting a free and fair poll. The ruling party in the state, whose candidate, Kayode Fayemi lost to Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s candidate, Ayodele Fayose, had complained of electoral irregularities before, during and after the elections. The APC had since challenged the results of the election in court. source.....naij.com |

Over 109,000 fans were packed into the stadium in Michigan to watch the Red Devils' 3-1 win - more than the previous record set in the 1984 Olympics Manchester United's 3-1 win over Real Madrid set a new record for attendance at a football match in the United States. 109,318 fans packed into Michigan Stadium, beating the previous record of 101,799, which was set at the 1984 Olympic final when France beat Brazil 2-0 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. That venue and tournament saw the only other six-figure football attendance in U.S. history, as 100,374 saw Yugoslavia defeat Italy 2-1 for the bronze medal. Saturday's figure also eclipses the attendance for the World Cup final in 1994, which saw 94,194 watch Brazil take on Italy in the most high-profile game to take place in America to date. Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez grabbed a goal for the Red Devils after Ashley Young scored two either side of Gareth Bale's penalty, continuing Louis van Gaal's positive start as United boss. United now move on to face Liverpool in the final of the International Champions Cup on August 5 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, while Madrid will prepare for the Uefa Super Cup against Sevilla in Cardiff. |
Goodluck Jonathan , President of the federal republic of Nigeria and some other top important government functionaries escaped what would have been a disaster as the N9billion Presidential Jet developed technical fault, while they were aboard on Saturday at Minna airport , Niger state. The presidential jet, Nigerian Air Force 001, had earlier conveyed Jonathan to Minna for PDP North-Central rally which held in the state. But when at the end of the rally, the President returned to the airport in company of top government officials, PDP state governors and party chiefs for a trip to Sokoto, from where he was scheduled to return to Abuja, they didn’t know that something strange was waiting for them…. Several minutes after Jonathan had bade farewell to those who accompanied him to the airport, and the door of the aircraft was shut, the aircraft failed to move. After many attempts, crew members and engineers, for the first time, had to disembarked from the aircraft and made spirited efforts to fix the fault as armed security men took strategic positions around the place. While this was going on, Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Senate President, David Mark; PDP governors and National Assembly and Federal Executive Council members were watching in disbelieve. They couldn’t understand why a Presidential Jet that they voted billions of Naira for its maintenance would be in such a bad shape that it couldn’t fly any more. Is it that the Ogas are pocketing the money for servicing? When it became obvious that Nigeria’s Number One Presidential plane has been grounded, the commander of the Presidential Air Fleet, Air Vice Marshal Uko Ebong, ordered that a smaller presidential jet, which took the Vice-President to the state be brought to fly Jonathan. President Jonathan disembarked from the faulty jet around 3.30pm and quickly moved to the smaller aircraft. All the top government officials and PDP governors who had rushed into the first plane with Jonathan all come down with long faces, with some of them sweating heavily. It was indeed a big embarrassment as many started making alternative travel arrangements. When asked what happened to the plane, a FAAN official simply said: “The return engine refused to pick..... |
