That is because of how smartphones manage power. and the laws of physics.
when using the battery, you have a limited amount of power. in order to conserve this power and make the phone last longer on each charge, when on battery, the phone's performance is sometimes reduced. for instance, the screen my be dimmed, the processor speed may be reduced . . . and so on. in effect, less power is consumed and so, less heat is produced.
when charging, from the phone's perspective, it has all the power in the world. so It gobbles it. processor speed runs at top notch, all functions are activated, and on top of that, the battery charges. there is no way around this. since the phone is now using more power, it must heat up because all that energy has to go somewhere.
