If you're not to keen on getting a brand new device, there's a good list of phones that tick your options at about that price. And you also don't have to settle for a mid ranger.

S6edge is an absolutely wonderful device around that budget for UK used.

LG g5, xperia z5, HTC10. These are as well totally sweet options.

They're flagships in their line and they enjoy regular and optimizing updates.

Right now in 2017, running into any of these mentioned risks is greatly unlikely, unless you're newest-bie in tech.

Hard bricking seems trifling these days now that frameworks and IDEs are much more stable.

youre right, M8 has good speakers, good metalic build and a good processor. The deal breaker for me would be the pricing, i'd buy the cheaper one. Though i'm a 5.5-6 inch screen person so the M8's size is a turn off.

Screen size for me doesn't go beyond 5.2"

Anything beyond that is like straddling a baby.

You know, pixel ratio is densier on smaller screen, so better display output.

You're right tecno lacks a few features like IR and NFC when compared to the s4, but these features hold no real value to the average user. People mind about battery, camera, build quality, screen size, internet speeds and these are all areas where the CX beats the S4. For goodness sake S4 doesnt even have an FM radio yet these are features we need here. I think the only advantage the s4 has is that its good for people that like small sized phones.

If by average user, you mean mediocre and under utilization, then I'll probably agree with you.

Keep in mind that there are phones from 20
13 that trumps the Camon in build quality, sound quality, and mostly performance. Eg, M8.
