Seyi Shay is blessed with a voice that can melt a stone, no wonder she has been rising and rising since she came into the industry few years ago. Perhaps, it was because of her great vocal chords that the organisers of a recent event in Lagos invited her to perform at the event. And when the event kicked off, they thought that the best person to sing the national anthem was Seyi Shay, the singer in the house. Oh yes, she started very well, the first stanza of the national anthem was so smooth and silky in her mouth as she rendered the anthem effortlessly. She would have earned a high score for her efforts, but dear Seyi lost it at the second stanza of the anthem. She fumbled and jumbled the lines, repeating the lines of the first stanza for the second. But she was able to catch up almost immediately and she continued as if no harm was done. The MC at the event, thereafter, tried to water down the goof by joking that only a few would be able to recite the second stanza of the anthem. Crest fallen Seyi wasn’t happy as Saturday Beats saw her being escorted by another female outside the event venue. It was written all over her face that she was totally embarrassed and may have wished she practised more before climbing the stage.

Two soldiers were killed and another injured during a blast at the Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, 3 Armoured Division, Rukuba Barracks, Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday. Another soldier was said to have sustained serious injuries. The blast, which occurred around 10.45am, was said to have been caused during the destruction of old explosives in an old ammunition armoury. Some soldiers were said to be clearing the stock when some of the explosives went off. The blast, which was heard many kilometres away, created panic in Jos and Bukuru metropolis as rumours went round that the barracks was under attacks by insurgents. Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Texas Chukwu, who confirmed the development, said there was no iota of truth in the insinuation that the barracks was under attack. According to him, the explosion occurred during an ongoing demolition exercise, which started on Wednesday. Chukwu, in a statement, in Jos on Saturday, said, “The attention of 3 Division headquarters at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, was this morning drawn to the news making the rounds in some media houses that a bomb exploded at the cantonment as a result of the handiwork of insurgents. “I want to use this medium therefore to state that this cantonment was not under attack or attacked by insurgents. “There is an ongoing demolition exercise, which started on Wednesday, April 20, and to terminate on May 4. The public were informed in the media. The explosion heard in the cantonment was from an a accident that occurred while the troops authorised to destroy unserviceable ammunition were carrying out their task. “Some of the unserviceable ammunition exploded in the process of being moved to the demolition site. The explosion did not affect the cantonment or the neighbouring communities. Unfortunately two soldiers lost their lives and one sustained injury.” Souce:www.punchng.com/news/residents-panic-over-explosion-in-jos-army-barracks/ |

The World Health Organisation says pesticide poisoning is the probable cause of mysterious deaths of over 18 people in Ode Irele, in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo State. Those who died suffered from blurred vision and headaches, and then lost consciousness before dying within 24 hours. The “current hypothesis is cause of the event is herbicides,” WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl, said in a tweet. “Tests done so far are negative for viral and bacterial infection,” he added. The WHO spokesman said the current theory was that the deaths were caused by weedkiller. All of those affected started showing symptoms between April 13 and 15. The tests were carried out at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, the WHO said. Meanwhile, the WHO officials have visited Irele town in Ondo State to trace some victims with symptoms of the unknown disease that has killed over 18 persons. The Ondo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju, said this at a news briefing in Akure on Saturday. The commissioner added that five victims of the disease, who were still alive as of Saturday had been moved to the University College Hospital, Ibadan on Saturday night. Adeyanju and other state government officials also visited Irele to get first hand information from some of the victims who are still alive and their relations. The commissioner, however, revealed that the two victims discharged themselves from the hospital against medical advice. He stated that medical personnel had begun tracing the address of the two victims and others who he said the state government would move to the UCH, Ibadan for further treatment. He said, “We were together with the WHO officials on active case search. We are looking for people with the disease. We have been calling on the people of the town who are down with the disease to come out and it is working. Five patients have been moved to the UCH and I know that their cases will be well-handled. The attention of the whole world is on it. “The Ondo State Government will pay the bill, the patients are not going to pay, we just want them to come out so that we can find a solution to the disease. “The disease is not contagious and it is not infectious. If it is contagious those treating them would have come down with the symptoms.” The Ondo State Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Betiku Bamidele, told one of our correspondents that fresh blood and urine samples had been taken from the cases and they had been sent to two separate laboratories outside the state. Bamidele said, “Fresh blood samples have been taken from these cases for further toxicology studies in two separate laboratories. Also, some sample of the drinks they took have also been taken for analysis. It is not infectious. Toxicity of some sort is likely to be the cause.” Earlier, the Health commissioner had explained that four of the drinkers had died while one of them was alive but down with the sickness. The commissioner urged members of the public to discountenance the terrifying photos of some persons with bumps all over their bodies saying those in the photographs did not die of the disease. Some residents of the town, who also corroborated Adeyanju’s claims, told one of our correspondents that the WHO officials visited the General Hospital at Ode Irele where two of the victims were admitted. A resident of the town, Mr. Jobi Enimade, who is an accountant with the Ministry of Niger Delta at Igbokoda office, said that the WHO officials came to his residence and asked him questions about the disease. A video has surfaced showing Nigerian pastor, T.B. Joshua, warning South Africans of a “youth revolt” in their nation which would result in deaths of “certain people”. The clip, uploaded to Joshua’s popular YouTube channel Emmanuel TV, says the controversial cleric prophesied about the deadly xenophobic attacks spreading across South Africa on Sunday 28th July 2013. “In the nation, South Africa, we should help them in prayer because I am seeing youth revolt,” the clip quotes Mr. Joshua as saying. “It will be very serious. A situation where youth will come out and… you learn that there is a protest. Some people were killed – certain people.” Mr. Joshua’s prediction made the front cover of South African newspaper-based City Press newspaper in August 2013 when Julius Malema, the fiery leader of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), visited his church in Nigeria for “spiritual blessings”. The clip was posted alongside a message from Mr. Joshua to South Africans. “If we fail to see that there are powers that cause people to be bowed down in bondage, we are going to fight the wrong battle,” he wrote, in a statement posted on the Nigerian pastor’s official Facebook page, followed by over 1.5 million people. He then proceeded with a prayer for “calmness” in South Africa. “I pray for my nation, South Africa. As Jesus stood in the boat and commanded the storms to be calm, I stand in the midst of the storm in my nation, South Africa and I command the storm, wind and waves to be calm, in the name of Jesus! I speak calmness to my nation, South Africa, in the name of Jesus!” The recent spate of xenophobic violence has spread to different South African cities, with thousands of foreign-owned shops forcibly closed and their owners seeking refuge in makeshift camps. Five immigrants are said to have been killed, including a 14 year-old boy. Horrifying images and videos have surfaced online showing locals burning foreign nationals and looting their shops. The violence erupted shortly after a purported statement from the Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini, calling on foreigners to return to their countries as they were causing economic “inconvenience” to locals. T.B. Joshua’s television station, Emmanuel TV, is especially popular in South Africa where thousands of Christians annually go for “pilgrimage” at his church, The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations, in Lagos, Nigeria. Despite the horrific xenophobic attack ongoing in South Africa, the Nigerian Government has said it will move to evacuate its citizens only if the situation gets worse. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali, on Thursday said so far Nigerians have not been attacked. “With the discussions I have been having with Nigeria’s Head of Mission in Pretoria, no Nigeria n has so far been affected,” Mr. Wali said Thursday in Abuja. ”They informed me that they have called the Nigerian community and addressed them and told them to close their shops, stay home and keep out of trouble and obey the laws of South Africa. “They have also confirmed that the South African authority has moved in to take actions that would forestall any further disturbance in South Africa,” Mr. Wali said. Mr. Wali said it will move to evacuate its citizens if the xenophobic attacks get worse. “If it gets worse it is the duty of our country to make sure our people are brought back, and we are taking that duty serious. ”We are not prepared to allow any of our nationals to be subjected to such inhuman treatment. “We are monitoring the situation and will now take action according to the situation that develops,” he said. Xenophobia in South Africa dates back to 1994 and are mainly targeted at citizens of other African Countries. In May 2008 a series of xenophobic attack left 62 people dead. In the current attack, at least five people have been killed and hundreds forced to flee their homes in one of South Africa’s worst outbreaks of xenophobic violence in years.
