Voters in the Ogun east senatorial district, comprising nine local councils have elected Prince Buruji Kashamu, a man wanted in the United States in connection with drug offences, as their senator. Kashamu was declared the winner today in Abeokuta and was said to have beaten the All Progressives Congress candidate, Prince Adedapo Abiodun. Kashamu’s victory was the most unlikely permutation in the state, facing up to Abiodun, an oil mogul, who ran a well-oiled campaign. Abiodun was expected to win the seat comfortably, but Kashamu defied the odds. He polled 99, 540 votes to defeat Abiodun, who had 84,001 votes. Kashamu’s emergence was the main surprise in the senatorial election in the district that saw the defeat of two incumbent, Senator Adegbenga Sefiu Kaka. He came third in the race, winning just12,972 votes. He contested on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, led by former governor Olusegun Osoba. Kaka was not only incumbent that failed to win his seat back. In Ogun central, Senator Gbenga Obadara also of the SDP lost to APC’s Prince Lanre Tejuoso. Also, the All Progressive Congress,APC candidate in Ogun West, Prince Gbolahan Dada defeated the PDP and SDP candidates to emerge winner in the district. Waliu Taiwo from Ota was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP while Biyi Otegbeye from Ilaro was the SDP candidate. In the House of Representatives race, the APC won seven seats from the nine federal constituency seats in the State, leaving PDP to clinch the remaining two seats. The two seats won by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP are Ijebu North/Ijebu East/Ogun Waterside and Remo Federal Constituency. Adesegun Adekoya , a.k.a. ‘Attacker’ won in Ijebu North and Ladi Adebutu, won the Remo federal constituency. APC’s Kehinde Odeneye won in Ijebu Central. Segun Williams, also of the APC won the Abeokuta South constituency. Both were incumbents.. On the whole, the APC has won in 12 of the 19 local councils so far declared. PDP won in seven. The only local government being expected now is Ipokia. Source:www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/03/29/ogun-people-elect-kashamu-us-wanted-fugitive-as-senator/

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) has alerted Nigerians of a plot by Governor Isa Yuguda of Bauchi state to cause the cancellation of Saturday’s election and to provoke a state of emergency in the state. A press statement from the Directorate of Media and Publicity of the APCPCO noted that intelligence report at its disposal indicates that the Bauchi State governor is in the process of manufacturing crises across the state so as to give an impression that elections across the state which put the APC in clear lead in all layers of election was inconclusive and therefore call for an outright cancellation of all the elections held on Saturday in Bauchi State. “We have it on good authority that Governor Yuguda is planning to engineer violence across Bauchi State in order for him to provoke a state of emergency so that elections across the state which put the APC in strong lead in the state would be seen to have been marred by violence. “We make bold to state that this plot by the Bauchi State governor to write off the electoral wishes of the people is anti-democratic, pernicious, subversive and absolutely unacceptable. “In the light of this development we call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to be railroaded by the Governor Yuguda and all other anti-democratic forces into taken actions that may jeopardise the tranquillity we have so far enjoyed in the course of this election. “We, however, call on the teeming supporters of the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari in Bauchi State and across the country to be abreast of this development and never fall for the demonic plot to write off their franchise as clearly expressed in the Saturday, March 28 Presidential and National Assembly Election. We urge them to be resolute, vigilant, peaceful and law abiding,” the statement signed by Mallam Garba Shehu in Daura, Katsina State on Sunday, March 29 stated. Nigeria's military continues to hold two Al Jazeera journalists who have been detained since Tuesday morning. Ahmed Idris and producer Ali Mustafa were detained in their hotel room after returning from covering a story about the Nigerian troops fighting Boko Haram in Borno State. The story which was done in cooperation with the military, was part of the channel’s coverage on the Nigerian presidential election, which will take place on Saturday. A military statement accused both men of "operating without protection, accreditation or due clearance”. However, both Idris and Mustafa are officially accredited by the Independent Electoral Commission in Abuja. Both Idris and Mustafa are Nigerian nationals and were detained in their hotel rooms. Clement Nwankwo of the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre in Abuja said the military needed to be concious of the international focus on Nigeria during the election period. "We hope this is just a misunderstanding," he told Al Jazeera. "But restraining journalists from carrying out their duties for four days is going beyond misunderstanding," Nwankwo said. Idris, who has been with Al Jazeera since 2010, has more than 30 years of experience, and Mustafa has been a cameraman with the network since 2011. An Al Jazeera spokesperson called on the Nigerian authorities to immediately release Idris and Mustafa. “Al Jazeera is dismayed that the military have obstructed Al Jazeera from reporting on the ground ... The continued detention of our staff without any reason is an attack on free media," the spokesperson said.
