@eniwaye: it should be all that is required should be sent to the email. During the actual verification, the next of kin will present him or herself. That means the next of kin will come with death certificate and other documents to show proof that he or she is next of kin. e.g if wife is NOK, she can also come with marriage certificate, passport of deceased, photographs of NOK with deceased, letter of administration etc. The next of kin must be prepared to show proof as next of kin. All official documents of deceased from nitel should be brought at time of verification including past payments, account statements etc.

@ancientdeb: It is the same for mtel staff too. So in fact we should say nitel/mtel staff. Nitel is being used as a general term to describe even the mtel staff. Mtel was created in 1996 with mostly nitel staff being seconded there.

@apus: no need for the hardcopy. Just forward to that email and include your ID number and name in the email subject. also for all the scanned copies, use your ID number when naming them. There are some former nitel staff that are computer/ IT experts working since yesterday to collate this information and format it into the format that PTAD wants.
@sonya4all: As for deceased staff, I just found out that if they were pensionable at point of death, the next of kins will be paid. e.g. if the deceased staff exited in 2006 after at least 10years in service and died in 2015, the next of kins are entitled to arrears from 2012 to 2015 only and won't be included in the monthly pension. under defined benefits scheme, your pension stops immediately on death. however, that will be when arrears are being paid not for the current monthly pension which is hoped to be started after the upcoming verification.

someone asked on the meaning of defined benefits scheme. This is the old pension scheme for civil/public servants whereby the worker doesn't make any contribution towards his or her retirement and is entitled to a pension on retirement till death if he or she has put in at least 10years in service. This scheme was filled with many problems especially funding shortfalls and hence in 2004 the federal government decided to change to the new contributory scheme using PFA's. Under this new scheme, the worker is expected to contribute a percentage of salary and the employer contributes also. From 2007, this scheme is what operates in nigeria.
However, there were still people who retired before 2007 and have been on defined benefits scheme. therefore, government decided to set up PTAD to take care of these category of retirees.
In the case of nitel, those who were disengaged in 2006 or who retired before 2006 and have put in 10years or more in service, are entitled to pension for life irrespective of the so called pension buy out then which BPE did. I understand some staff still continued with nitel up to 2012 or even up to 2015. If you recall, those set of people were asked to sign new contracts after 2006, so it is not viewed as continuing service. Also at that time, the workers who continued were now on the contributory pension scheme hence.
Let's use a scenario; A nitel staff worked up to 12 years in service in 2006 and was disengaged and paid off. That same staff was lucky to continue working with nitel under transcorp and others till 2012 or final sale of nitel in 2015. This staff received another payment in 2015 and also receives some small pension from his PFA monthly. Under PTAD rules, this same person is entitled to pension for the 12 years of service under the old Nitel defined benefits scheme. If this staff did maybe 8years of service by 2006, he is not entitled to any pension as at now even if he continued working after 2006 with nitel under trasncorp and others.
I hope this clarifies many issues on this contentious pension.
Because of the financial challenges of government, arrears of pension from 2012 is not in the table now but will be included subsequently. I said 2012 because those that retired in 2006/7 collected a pension buy out of five years which expired in 2012, hence technically, pension of five years since 2012 is being owed these category of workers.

Hello people. I got one news I have to share urgently. On Thursday/friday, PTAD nearly removed Nitel from the soon to be advertised verification of parastatals. Ptad said Nitel pensioners database is not in the format they require hence nearly stopped Nitel from being added. The Nitel reps had to plead before they were given a last chance. The following are needed. scanned copies of the following into jpg files:
Letter of first appointment
Letters of promotion
Payslip of last salary
Letter of retirement/disengagement
Passport photograph


This is to be received by 11th july 2017. spread this message around please.
Once the message is received in this email, the nitel reps in abuja have people working on them to be in the format that ptad wants. There is still a lot to be done. Keep this issue in serious prayers because ptad nearly dismissed nitel from the next verification on the excuse that they are not ready. Meanwhile, ptad complained that out of all parastatals, it is only nitel giving them problems e.g. the oluti group and co as well as having records that are not correct e.g. details of people not pensionable as at 2006 disengagement are being found. They insisted that those who are not entitled to pension will not get. e.g those that spent less than 10 years in service under the old defined benefits scheme.

@eniwaye; pls endeavour to do same and inform that your person to scan and send all those documents, hope her husband spent up to 10 years in service before his death. at the right time, she can come with all those documents of her late husband when verification starts.

Hello people. Still no concrete news regarding date of verification. I asked a former Nitel oga that is in the Halita group and he confirmed that the notification posted by PTAD in the newspapers earlier is for core civil servants. Parastatals verification may happen after this one. Truly the bureaucracy is too slow in Nigeria. I would have expected PTAD to do parastatals and core civil servants together.

yes for sure the Nigeria airways is involved. they were working closely with the nitel group.

it surely includes nitel. so many agencies and ministries are involved so they can't select only nitel for verification. as at the date of retirement in 2007, nitel staff were on defined benefits scheme.

@eniwaye2: I believe you should advise the woman to come to BPE and then Accountant General of the Federation’s office both in Abuja with all documents. The truth is that one man can’t stop the payment except she was being deceived. Where does the man work? Is it with BPE or AGF’s office? She should take it up with these two agencies and the truth will come out. I believe the man has illegally appropriated her late husband’s entitlements. If he is a government worker and still in service, he can be punished if it is found out that he “chopped” the money.
@tobore09: Yes there is a joint committee comprising PTAD, BPE and Accountant General working on the modalities right now. They are to submit a report by this Friday as I heard. PTAD invited BPE and AGF because they were involved in the previous payments so as to harmonise everything and ensure clarity of information. Once this is done, I believe they will call for verification next month July. Good thing that 2017 budget has been passed too.
Regarding the 20 years, I don’t know about that. What I do know is that there are plans being worked out to pay some arrears of the past years together with monthly payment of which has been approved.

Hello people. I greet all. I believe all is going well. I was with one of the former management staff that went in a group to PTAD on wednesday 7th June for updates. They asked for when the verification will commence and the PTAD people told them they are still doing their in house Admin work on it and will start when they are ready. My informant told me there was no firm assurance on when it will start. It was discouraging to hear that though the PTAD people confirmed they have all the information they need to start the verification. Invariably, the verification may not start this month to be honest. Let's plan with the fact that it may reach up to July/August before verification will start and payments may then start in September. This Nigeria and all the bureaucracy which make it difficult to move things fast. God help us all.

I doubt if you know what NNS ARADU is. Read the report again, " NNS ARADU is one of the three ships in the WORLD..." That is not something you simply pick from the shelf. I understand Even Germany that built the war ship for Nigeria once wanted to acquire it back.
But $250m for a frigate? Very wrong. Do you know NNS THUNDER was given to Nigeria by US from its Coast Guard? Despite that, do you know Nigeria still had to caugh out roughly about $800m before taking possession of the ship? Guy, find out these things, don't just assume.

It WAS one of three ships in the world with that capability when it was launched in the 80's but there are better and more capable warships that have exceeded those capabilities the Aradu had. The CNS was reminiscing on how it was so powerful then from his statement. It actually was one of the most powerful ships in Africa in the 80's but not now. The Egyptians, Algerians and Moroccans have more powerful warships of that class currently. The new ships from Russia, US, Germany, Norway, UK and even India are much better equipped and have more modern stealth and modular designs with the most modern radars, sonars ASW, Anti Air, Anti Surface missiles and CIWS weapons systems. That is why to make it become more modern and powerful will require a complete design review which will cost up to that 250million the CNS quoted which we both know is not necessary. Also, the cost of taking possession of the Hamilton class coast guard cutter which we were gifted in 2011 by the US which is now the NNS thunder, it didn't cost 800million dollars to take possession of it. it cost 8 million dollars to fit it for our use because the US had stripped off all the major weapon systems and even removed its air search radars CIWS and main gun. 800 million dollars on a refurbished ship from the US that was made in 1967? Yes i know. The frigate was manufactured in germany by blohm and voss and was purchased under shagari in the early 80's. You probably didnt understand me. I meant that with that 250million, you can buy a brand new frigate from germany or china rather than wasting that same amount in refitting a relic like aradu. To put this in perspective, the two new opv's we bought from china cost 53Million USD from China. Aradu should just be scrapped. It's time has passed. A brand new type 05A Frigate from china with full anti air, anti ship and anti submarine capabilities costs just a little over 200 million so it beats me why the Chief of Naval staff will be contemplating refitting that aradu.

Haba. That ship is old na and that amount is too much to spend on a 35 year old ship. Why waste that kind of money to refit aradu when with that same 250Million USD you can buy a super brand new and improved frigate from germany or even a cheaper from china. Aradu should be turned into a training ship or retired totally. To even use it as an OPV will be too expensive cos it uses too much fuel and lubricants.

I would not advise that you start any rollover. From experience, it doesn't end well. Let everyone play games daily as they feel like. My 2 cents

As far as i know, there are no new updates currently apart from the fact of waiting for announcement of date of commencement of verification. No worries, all is on track. What the executive Secretary of PTAD said was that with the information initially received from Nitel reps, the verification will commence in a few weeks and according to zones. I guess few weeks means it will enter June since May is almost over.

Some bad belle former staff under the auspices of a fake union had been threatening legal action against the expected pension payments. They said nitel is to be paid 20years pension buy out. Yeye people. Where do they think government will find that kind of money now under buhari. Thank God during a meeting yesterday, The PTAD madam was able to explain fully and convinced them to drop their senseless demands. There was fear initially that their agitation will delay this process. Any agent from anywhere that plans to put sand in the garri of nitel pensioners, make that person no see better at all. Verification date will soom be announced on national dailies by PTAD.

@ancientdeb23: What i found out is that whatever you were entitled to as pension as at time of disengagement in 2006 or if a pensioner before 2006, the amount you were collecting or expecting to collect as at 2006 is what you will get now. E.g if at disengagement in 2006 you are expected to get 50K pension monthly, then it is what you will get starting after this new verification. If you were also a pensioner before 2006 and you were collecting 50k, it is the same you will collect now. I was told there is no increment.
I heard also that deceased staff next of kins are entitled to pension until the time of death . What is being worked out is the modalities because the next of kin is not entitled to monthly pension as per regulations, but a lump sum of all outstanding pension. We will have to wait and see how this will be done.

@ancientdeb123: The deadline of 5th may 2017 given by PTAD to the Nitel Pension reps is for submission of all relevant information on Nitel staff such as conditions of service, nitel in house pension policies,number of pensioners including pre 2006 and after 2006. This will enable Ptad to make estimates and projections prior to the start of the verification and to guide their preparations for the verification proper. The committee is working hard to give this information to Ptad by tomorrow 5th. I believe once Ptad receives this, a date for actual verification will be announced in this month of May.

Hello all. I met with one of the senior officers representing NITEL retirees. Matter of fact, he gave me a photo copy of a letter written by PTAD conveying approval for the inclusion of NITEL into the monthly pension payments. The letter asked the Head of NITEL Pensioners to submit details of pensioners on or before 5th May 2017. The letter also said modalities for verification will be worked out between representatives of NITEL pensioners and PTAD. The verification will commence in the coming weeks. Things are finally looking good.
I specifically asked him of the release of 299 Billion for payment to all parastatals. He said he is not aware of that because he said PTAD just wants to put the NITEL Pensioners and all the other parastatal pensioners on Monthly pensions. He said that quoted sum is close to what is required to cover the pension arrears but PTAD said the approval from the President through Minister of Finance is just for inclusion into monthly pensions. I am confident that by July, the monthly pensions will start to be paid.

We should also understand that approval does not mean the money is already available and cash backed. This is a huge sum that government may not have sitting in one account. It has to be planned for.

Good news. Will this 299 Billiion Naira be released at once as a lump sum to all parastatal's pensioners once verification is completed or it will be spread over some time?
