The key question now is will there be any arrears paid or the pension will start from the month of addition to pension payroll? I ask because it will be tough if no arrears are paid since most people are in serious debt here and there. Let's watch and see what will be paid to Delta Steel since they will be paid confirmed by August. That would be an indication of what to expect in terms of arrears.
I pray arrears are paid even if from beginning of this year till date.

As at today one of the donated NN Cutters, the Okpabana is more or less acting as the Navy's flagship with the RMAC fitted and has no missiles. We need to get a missile armed frigate like yesterday.

Seems our Nigerian Presidential Jet- Eagle 001 is back from maintenance. Sighted in Akure Airport today during the Presidents stop over on his way to the Ekiti rally.

I don't know what the convention is but i wonder why the CDS would be saluting the president alone and all the other service chiefs are seated. Looks like he is saluting the other service chiefs too who are obviously his junior. He is a more senior Lt.Gen than all the other service chiefs. Please any insight on this or is it normal.

The reason why so many came for verification was because the PTAD didn’t want to cause more controversy as the run up to the verification was coming up then.

It was clearly stated that if you haven’t served up to 10 years as at 2006 disengagement, you are not entitled to pension under the Defined Benefits Scheme. I noticed some people I know came for verification with just 5-6 years in service and expecting to be paid pension. How possible?

In order not to cause tension, there were allowed to be verified but PTAD already knew those people are ineligible. A staff of PTAD that was involved in the verification process in Abuja even said some people came with less than 5 years in service. Instead of turning them back, they were just verified. This may have accounted for the long delay it took to go through 22,000 documents to screen ineligible people out. The staff also said even if it’s clear you were ineligible, they would still have to do further checks on your documents supplied to see if you had worked in maybe state civil service before transferring to Nitel. This due diligence is time consuming.

Also some people with less than 10 years in 2006 continued working with Nitel/Mtel under Transcorp from 2006 and hence they now had their pension contributed to their PFA’s under the new contributory pension scheme. Many of these staff were paid disengagement money in 2006 and continued with transcorp. In 2013/14, they were also disengaged when NITEL/MTEL was finally liquidated and paid another disengagement money. Note that they also now had started contributory pension scheme under their Pension fund administrators. These sets of people have some income in their PFA though very small because of the short time of contribution from 2006.

How do you now expect such categories of staff to also now lay claim to pension benefits from PTAD which is administering the Defined Benefit Scheme (DBS). However, for some categories of staff such as the last MD/CEO Hajiya Zainab Sa’ab, who was eligible for pension under the DBS as at 2006 having spent over 20 years at 2006, she would be paid under PTAD DBS even though she had transited to the contributory pension scheme. This is an example that should help clear these misunderstandings.

Ptad said they received about 22000 applications for pension verification. they cut t down to a little over 13000. that's how I got the figure of 8000 difference. this shows not everyone verified was deemed to be eligible. don't ask me on the criteria used sha. I don't know.

@populardaniel: I suggest you just be patient and wait to see what you would be paid. I believe as a NOK, you would be paid when the payments start. I guess your dad must have been owed some pension arrears before he died and is eligible to be paid. i think that is what may be paid to you. Keep your fingers crossed.Cheers

@Obynolucy: I agree with you that PTAD is not being truthful about the timeline and this may be for reasons beyond their control such as availability of cash backing from Ministry of Finance.

From sources, the compilation is completed but they have been told to keep saying they are doing computations of benefits so as to reduce pressure on them from pensioners but alas that story would be difficult for PTAD to defend by middle of July 2018.

The payments would surely come but i am beginning to feel it will get up to September before it will start. The question therefore is that will they pay from January - till the month they will begin paying or they just start by that month.

It is necessary for the pensioners to come together and put up more pressure on PTAD and Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Budget & Planning and even the presidency. It is not yet Uhuru.

Pointers to this has been from other Parastatal pensioners verified since September 2017 e.g New Nigerian Newspapers, Nigerian Re, Delta Steel, have not been paid till now. They were also told the same cover stories of 4-5 months before payment but nothing till now.

@PTAD are still compiling benefits to be paid. This was the latest news told to some former management staff that went to PTAD last week. Apparently, the NITEL/MTEL work and compilation is quite tedious to them because of the huge number involved; over 22,000 to be verified for authenticity before processing to pension payroll. I was thinking that PTAD should have engaged more staff even on adhoc basis to speed up the process. Thankfully, budget is to be signed by Buhari today so the excuses other than compilation delays would no longer be tenable.

If Abdulsalam is 76 then Buhari is at least 80. And he still wants a second term. smh.

Nigeria should just consider going to China to secure some more the FC-1/JF-17 no matter the agreements we may have signed with Pakistan. We buy some from Pakistan and some from China. e.g one squadron each from both countries as they are basically the same aircraft and we can get some concessions from the Chinese in terms of loans to purchase them and china would deliver faster as they have a higher rate of production. But what do i know?

@Nemesis8u: i agree that the Jaguar is not an option the NAF should consider at this time. The BAE from UK also evaluated the Jags after HAL did and offered a very low bid for purchase which was rejected. I feel the NAF should have sold them as scrap and used the money raised to fund the purchase of other assets. Because of this, the NAF lost hope of ever reviving the jags and migs too. These were planes that some of which had not even seen up to 200 flight hours according to what was reported then. What a monumental waste of resources.

Regarding the price quoted then, i recall the figures being bandied around was over 200M USD for the full fleet restoration of about 18 jaguars of which 6 were trainer versions.

Look also at the Aermachi MB339 which i hear has been held up in Italy for repairs(not sure they are back to Nigeria) when we have been fighting an insurgency for 10 years. It would have helped reduce the pressure on the Alpha jet as the prime COIN fighting jet at the start of the insurgency.

We need to look at getting at least 6 air superiority fighters in the likes of Su-30 either new or upgraded pre-owned in the next 4 years while the JF17 should be at least 2 squadrons. That in itself is an issue because the rate of production by Pakistan's PAC is too slow to allow us get that number in 5 years. Can we just go directly to China after a few years of evaluation of the JF17 and get a full haul of squadrons to be delivered quicker? And while doing so, get some advance air defense systems like the BUK and Pantsir.

However, as was stated, the NAF leadership of the last 15 years prior to 2015 have not been visionary, bold and proactive enough. May we continue to see the likes of the current NAF chief so that we can build and expand our air capacity.

At the time, the NAF was seriously considering the re induction of the Jaguars and Migs. (early 2000's).The Migs were also found to be in terribly bad conditions hence could not be restored except at a very high cost. After this report, the NAF top brass then considered getting the SU-27 or Mig 29. It is not known if the Indians offered to sell any Jet to Nigeria for the obvious reason that India at the time had not started production of any locally made jet such as the LCA to offer to Nigeria.

The Su-27/Mig 29 pitch by the NAF did not sail through and for some unexplained reason (likely costs and lack of political will) hence the NAF was forced to go for the Chinese made F7 Jet (a clone of the Migs 21 which we already had 2 squadrons since the 80's that had been allowed to rot away) as a stop gap measure while the search was to be expanded for a more formidable front line interceptor, strike and fighter jet.

I wish we had gotten the Su-27's/Mig 29's then so that by now Nigeria would have matured to operating the Su-30's and Mig 35's.
Lost opportunities. Look at how it is now, we are taking over 3 years to buy just 3 JF17 jets and they're still not delivered. SMH.

Nigeria's jaguars were evaluated by the Indians for restoration circa 2003-5 but were deemed to be too damaged to be restored. Their report to NAF then stated that they could be restored but it would have been as so expensive as it would have been a total replacement of all parts from the fuselage engines, avionics all the works. They quoted a price which was crazily high.

These jets were not properly stored and I even remembered going to makurdi air base in the late 90's and seeing the Jaguars and Mig 21s parked outside under the elements. those ones were in terrible shape. a few of the jaguars were in storage in a hangar but even those were not looking good. proper storage would have required dismantling them and storing in a box.

The military regime of IBB really dealt so badly with the air force principally as a result of the Vatsa Coup plot. The NAF has not fully recovered from that devastating blow.

I heard that eagle one was sent for some upgrades mostly communication upgrades and a C or D check. I don't think it can be sold quietly like that. It surely is coming back.

I never really liked designated survivor from the start. the premise of the whole series showed it wasn't going to last long and the whole storyline and acting has been sub par in my opinion.

I believe what you are trying to say is that PTAD said they will pay some arrears from the outstanding years but there is no clear information from PTAD yet on that. What i initially heard was that starting from January 2017 till date will be paid the monthly pension. So going by that, it will be from January 2017 till when the payment starts probably four months after febraury 2018 when the whole nitel/mtel will be verified. But that 4 months after verification far sha o.

Those of us on Twitter can ask ptad on their handle when the locations will be published. It is just six days left. I will be quite disappointed if they postpone or shift date again. People are hoping seriously on this date already announced. May God touch them at ptad.
