Got to the Embassy at 5:20 for a 6:30am appointment and place was full with about 300 people.
Waited for over 1 hour and finally we were attended to.
Got in after screening, fingerprint was captured and was the first to be attended to.
Alas, no consular and we all waited.
This is where THE MIRACLE HAPPENED.
I began watching TV hung in the corner of the interview hall.
First documentary was about 5 Polish handicaps that came to US for Marathon.
Followed by NYU student interview. It was subtitled for all to read. I kept reading the texts.
A student were asked why he chose NYU, replied he likes the environment because it is conducive for learning having visited the school before applying…………
Secondly, he claims to love the laboratories and the attention lectures give to students.
Blah blah blah…………………..
Few minutes afterwards, I was called.
VO: Morning
ME: Morning, hope you had a good night?
VO: Pass me your passport and I-20
Me: Gave them to him.
VO: Why the University?
Me: I replied verbatim the answers I listened to on the TV…..I SWEAR!!!
VO: What course of study:
Me: MBA and ITM
VO: Why MBA and ITM?
Me: I replied verbatim again what I watched on TV few minutes earlier that ‘I love the student lecturer ratio’, the laboratories especially their SAP lab…………. (I read that one before coming for the interview)

Me: I have technical, Management and Business deficiencies and I believe the MBA and ITM will help bridge the gap to make me more employable. Also, The SAP Competence Laboratory situated in the University will help improve my knowledge of ERP……….
VO: When was the last time you visited the US?
Me: (I honestly don’t remember; I have visited a few times in the last 10 years tho.) I don’t remember but about 3 years ago.
VO: Who is sponsoring you?
Me: I am sponsoring myself and my employer has equally granted me study leave with pay
Vo: Can I see your bank statement please?
Me: I handed him the leave letter from my employer first and waited for him to finish before I give him the bank statement. He returned the letter and didn’t bother to ask for bank statement.
VO: He returned my I-20. (I thought he had refused my application at that point). Then he detached my most recent passport from the other 2 and returned the others. He said “Your application has been approved and you will get a notification when your passport is ready for collection by either mail or text and handed me a white paper.
Me: Thank you.

Note: There is no formula to getting a US Visa. Just be prepared and seek GOD’s favour. It was HIS grace at work. If any Nairalander was at the embassy earlier today, he will testify about the documentary I am talking about.

Those were the questions I gave you yesterday as probable questions.

The date you see as earliest date before you make payment is different from the dates that open up when you pay. So don't hesitate in making payment dates are filling up real fast.

I have my interview scheduled for July 15. However, my Sponsor's bank statement, which I submitted for my I-20 processing, is for a month period (April 15 to May 17).

Can I take this same statement, knowing it would be about 2 months old by then?
Must the bank statement be up to date as at the time of interview?

PS: The bank statement covers such a short period due to the consistent massive cash flow. That one month period alone spans 32 pages. So printing for more than a month would be tantamount to printing a textbook.

You have a good cash flow which is very great.

But the VO wants to see the cash flow over a greater span than just a month.

Wants to be sure your sponsor is consistently having such cash flow not just a one month period of activity.

I think it shouldn't be less than 3 months.

Why a second masters? The first masters didnt align with my professional career of the last 10years. Having started a consulting company, the knowledge deficit of technical, managerial and business was glaring and needs to be addressed for my career growth and to propel my consulting firm to a world class.

Why the Uni? The combination of MBa with Information Technology with a competency research laboratory, one of the two Universities that have such in America. Also, the cost is affordable as compared to the location of the other school.

Other schools: wrote to a few but applied to one and got admitted!

After graduation: The company i work for is co-sponsoring me and i have signed a bond to return to work for them upon graduation....letter to support the contract!

I wrote to several schools but only applied to one and got admitted.

I got GRE waiver because of a Masters i took in ABU 10years ago.

I got 7.0 in IELTS. 1 attempt and not interested in rewriting.

I am a frequent traveler to US and hold a valid 2 years visa now.

Presently, i have a valid Canadian, UK (10 years) Visa,

I have travelled to over 10 countries(schengen, China, Dubai, Saudi) but visas expired.

No police record nor overstay my stay in any country.

Not married. No kids. In my 30’s.

ME: Nigeria’s education system is still developing, given the shortcomings of graduate studies in universities in the country, continuing my education in Nigeria will ill-afford me the required skills and knowledge for the kind of impactful career I intend to build.
VO: Why not China?
ME: In as much as China has experienced rapid economic and technological development within the last few decades, its education system cannot still be compared to that of the USA. (This explains why there is a constant increase in the number of Chinese moving to study in the USA). Also, language barrier might have a negative impact on the quality of education delivered. (Since I am from an English speaking country, USA will rank better than China in terms of language variable when English taught courses are involved)

ME: Yes sir, I know of one Nigerian studying there sir.

Me: I checked a Nigerian forum of people studying in the USA known as nairaland after receiving the admission decision and I found one Nigerian there
V.O: Why New Mexico state?
Me: When I was applying for my Master program, I considered states that the cost of living is reasonable for me, that I can afford. The weather in the state is also good, similar to what we have in Nigeria. So adapting will be easy for me.
VO: how did you hear about New Mexico State University?
Me: I first heard about NMSU from my American classmate. She spoke highly of NMSU as a place where you can get quality education at a relatively affordable cost (my major consideration) and I also did research using College Board, master portal and Peterson where NMSU was also recommended considering my area of specialization. I also researched on graduates from Economics department of NMSU on LinkedIn and got connected with a Bangladeshi who equally recommended NMSU. He got his masters from NMSU and currently undergoing his DED( Doctor of Economic development) studies.
VO: What do you know about NMSU?
ME: NMSU is a medium-sized public university located in a small city in a suburban setting. It has more Hispanic than native whites.
Vo: what is your highest degree and what have you been doing after wards?
ME: My highest degree is bachelor’s degree in Economics obtained from (xxxxx) in 2015. After-which I taught high school Economics at Divine Child International School, from Sept 2015 to October 2016 before going for my 1year compulsory NYSC where I taught in a secondary school as an Economics teacher until October 2017. I returned back to my previous employer and taught Economics and Mathematics from January 2018 to August, 2018 before moving to China to study Contemporary china studies, at Silk Road School, Renmin University of China. First thing I to state is the current trade war between China and America. Even MIT recently informed their students to let go of any research work that had to do with Hawaii. I don't know how far the trade war would go with candidates in China.

Secondly, you need to learn how to answer questions. It is not an essay ..rather an interview.

Kindly don't render any document if you were not asked for it. It could only mean you're either dubious or desperate.

If the VO is not satisfied with the information provided, you'll be asked. It is better to be brief and know everything you filled than been elaborate without cognizance of what was filled.

VO: How many accepted you and how many rejected you.
ME: Eastern Illinois University and Murray State University accepted me, NEIU rejected me and I am awaiting decision from GSU.

VO: Why did you Choose EIU.
ME: I met with an Alumni who gave me firsthand information about the Sustainable energy program and the faculty at large. The Renewable Energy Center in EIU is the largest university biomass in the country. The center will afford me the firsthand opportunity to learn how renewable energy is utilized to support the need of a campus or community. I exchanged series of email with the Director of Studies; Dr. Peter Liu who advised me to apply after vetting my credentials and supporting documents.
The ratio of Lecturer to Students, and the state of Art facilities where also the convincing factors.

VO: Any standardized test?
ME: GRE: 280 and TOEFL: 80?

V.O: What will the degree do for you?
Me: The program is a science-based and technology management focused, it will equip me, put me on the edge to accept the challenging mission of achieving renewable energy utilization and its sustainability in the food industry, which will reduce our over dependence on crude based source of fuel which will lower the prices of and demand for natural gas by increasing competition and diversifying our energy supplies.

VO: Who is paying the school bills?
ME: My dad is footing the bills.

VO: What does he do? Pass me his SOA
ME: He’s a lecturer of Law at University of Ibadan, hands her SOA

VO: I can see you married with Kids, why are you not going with them.
ME: My wife just got started work with XYZ bank and there’s a bond she signed with them that won’t allow her leave her duty post for two years.

VO: You can pick your visa in 3 days.
ME: Alright, have a great day.

You're expected to have carried out indepth research on ALL the schools you applied to. Take out that ratio of this to that.. Virtually all schools have an impressive ratio . Go work on that point.

Your response is very weak.
In what does he do.. You better respond so you can be put through the best way to present it.

If you're not going with funding, you MUST go with the motive of making a perfect impression and on time.

My VISA was approved on June 6th, 2019 at Abuja Embassy.

BACKGROUND
I went for the student VISA interview with my baby and previously, I & my family had been denied tourist VISA.
I had used every resource i could lay my hands on to prepare and I came up with my model answers to the usual student VISA questions; I could feel my confidence rise as I prepared. I got an assiatantship that covers my personal cost, however, I had a dependent cost (my baby) hanging there and my husband's bank statement hadn't the needed money to cover the total dependent cost. Well, I prayed that every document that would warrant a denial not be asked and I began listening to motivational speeches to conquer every anxiety.

In addition to that, I arrived at the embassy and met over 100 people there already! Then, it bagan to rain. I tried to wrap my baby in the baby shawl and approached the security officers to allow me do my biometrics and interview. They did! I became one of the first 15 people to be interviewed. I was eventually interviewed by the same VO who had previously interviewed my family and I.

ON THE INTERVIEW DAY

ME: Good morning (with a smile)
VO: Good morning, pass me your Document
ME: Passed our passports, 1-20s and SEVIS payment confirmation
VO: Where do you work?
ME: I am an Bleep working with (I looked exactly into the eyes of the VO and said the acronym for were i work, I instantly realised there was a look of dissatifaction on his face so I immediatly went ahead and said the full name of the acronym. He kind of paused as I spoke and by the time i was done, i could see he was more interested in me).
VO: What degree are you going for?
ME: Bleep
VO: Why are you going with your son? (Honestly, at this point, I could feel the favour of God working. My baby is a girl NOT a boy, but I also have a son and I was looking for the right opportunity to pass the information to the VO so he would know I am leaving behind not just my husband but my son aswell. On the face of it, the VO thought my baby was a boy because of the way i wrapped her due to the rain).

ME: You mean my son (pointing behind me, as if my son was behind) or my daughter (pointing to my baby who i was carrying)?
VO: (Now realising I have a son) Who will take care of your son?
ME: I answered
VO: What are you gonna do to your baby while you studying?
ME: I answered (I had my corrrespondence with some daycares and i was ready to show him if he asked but he never asked)
VO: why are you going with just your baby and not with your son also.
ME: (I hugged my baby a little bit and told him how young and very dependent my baby still is).
VO: How old is your son?
ME: I answered
VO: How long have you been married?
ME: i answered
VO: Are you still married?
ME: (I smilled and then answered)
VO: how are gonna pay fo rthis?
ME: I have an assistantship and the rest will be taken care of by my husband
VO: What does your husband do?
ME: I answered (But not very fluently at this point. I was partly thinking what i was going to do if he says i should show my husband's statement. The money there wasn't even up to half of the dependent cost. I found a way to gain composure somewhere in between my lines).

VO: He kept typing and I was looking intently at him and saying to myself, ''you must grant me VISA''. It looked like forever but he kept typing. I smiled until my smile faded and i kept waiting for him to stop typing. Time stood still!
VO: (Finally what I was waiting for) I have approved your VISAs.
(He brought out the two white papers and began to run down all the pickup and port of entry lecture, I pretended i was listening but my ears were merely physically present).

ME: Thank you.


No single document was asked. Everything worked for my good including the rain! I cant thank God enough for how he answered my prayers .

Fairheart has not been active here for like weeks now, which is unlike him and no one has ever noticed him or asked after him.

You know, sometimes, those guys deserve some kind of encouragements that will make them want to do more of what they have been doing. No one is paying them to help here, but they are doing it freely from the depth of their hearts and they enjoy doing it.

If we get to know how busy these guys are but still find time from their busy time to attend to our issues here, maybe then, we will learn to appreciate them and stop insulting them even when we are not comfortable with their comments and when we find their comments absurd.

Are you there to get ur visa or to look at the VO?
Bro try to get ur visa and run away. Is not a must u will look at the VO. Even the VO your looking at won’t even notice you since his or her eyes will be on the computer.

Sometimes if you don't have something reasonable to say it is better to take a chill pill.

Please my interview is in a few days, is it compulsory to have my eyeballs on the vo throughout the interview, what if i want to think for a second and i need to take my gaze off the vo very briefly, is this allowed.

Maintain eye contact as much as possible.
Gesticulate too if you know what I mean.
Trained experts can make decisions from body languages.
You can take your gaze off to think. The best way to keep your gaze fixed is looking at the forehead of the VO.
It will appear like you are looking at the eyes, this way, you can maintain your focus and confidence which is 80% key.

MAINTAIN eye contact.

So do rehearsals using the Mirror .
