vo:good morning
me good morning
vo pass me ur document
me pass it
vo why are you going to prairie view
me for my masters degree in electrical engineering
vo how do you hear about prairie view
me i did an online research on schools that offer power system nd control specialization in electrical engineering and i came across of PVAMU
VO why power system and control specialization
me i have a technical experience in it and most importantly it aligns with my research interest
vo why electrical engineering
me i choose electrical engineering because nigeria's power sector is in bad shape and the demand for more power generation and energy utilization are not been met
which calls for proper reform and implementation of smart technology to beat that therefore i see a deep drilling in this engineering field and specialization as
a good idea in achieving that
vo which other school do u apply to
me SDM&T
vo why PVAMU
me prairie view is my unique school because it specializes in researches related to smart grid innovations and has state of the art facilities dedicated to such
advancement more also i am exicited with the blends of familiar course requirements the program as to offer..i will b offering courses from power
system and control track which is related to my work experience to courses in wireless technology which i have a certification and trained on, to courses in
microelectronics and signal processing.
vo what will this course do for u
me am a maintenance engineer in the power field inline with this program therefore getting more knowledge through this program will give me a boost in my career
path enabling me take up high-tech jobs with energy multinationals such as cummins, general electric,ABB in revolutionalizing nigeria's power sector
vo when do u graduates
me 2016
vo what av u been doing since den
me after my graduation i went for my NYSC in NOV 2016 where i worked as a trainee with xxxx ( a generator manufacturer) and after my service
year i was offered a permanent position as an electrical engineer with the company, gaining experience since then doing online courses going for training
till this present moment.
Vo what are your duties
me my job roles include troubleshooting and repairing of generator control panels, software update on controllers, testing and replacement of generator electrical
part.
vo who is ur sponsor
me my uncle
vo what does he do
me he owns a construction company that into building and road construction projects.
vo can i have his SOA
me pass it
vo why will he be sponsoring u
me he promised to sponsor me in grad school.
vo what do you want to do with power system nd control
me i want to specialize in power system nd control in order to re engineering conventional power systems into smart grid networks
How did you hear about the school?
Your response is too shallow.
Can you go ahead to name some credible educational resources you must have used ?
Carnegie classification, Princeton Review, Usnews.com and all that?

Why power system and control specialization?

Which kyn response be that one?
Are you going there to play? Kindly go and do some deep research on that field and how it connects to your career.

Why electrical engineering?/
Ok you started making some positive statements here..
Refine it more!

What will this course do for you?

It is expected that after obtaining a Masters degree , lots of transformations would occur, such as career advancement, pay rise...
You should paint a picture of how the degree will equip you with requisite knowledge related to your field and how it will spur you back here in Nigeria.

What have you been doing since then?

Your response is confusing!
They want to know about your professional experience and if it is substantial enough for a home tie .

Why would he sponsor you?
He promised?
Promise ke!
Kindly work on that.

Hello Gurus in the house. I Seek your advise some weeks ago that if to deposit my tuition fee before going to embasy make sences but you advise me to abort the mission. my admission comes without funding; Tuition fee of $23k and living expenses of 14k. I later wrote to the Academic Chairman to please give me funding if truly he want me to come and study in his institution and for visa sake. He sent a letter to me that he has reduce the tuition by $ 16k and Stipends of 5800 Per semester but its for Second year of my program but second semester of my first year wil be consider if per chance fund is available but is not commiting him self for that. Now, my interview is nest week , although, i have my corporate account that covers all expenses. Pass me your i 20 and passport, do i need to give him the letter immediately since the funding is not written on I 20, or i should allow him to request for who is funding my program.
I Have bachelor degree in Mineral Resource Engring and i am going for Msc in Mineral Resouces Engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. I will apreciate your advise.
I
Pass me your I20
Don't pass anything other than the I20.
Doing otherwise will be too much show of desperation.

You have to wait till when the VO asks who's funding you before you start explaining and them say you have a letter from the school to show.
Till then don't show anything.

If you want to make things easier for you,
Kindly reschedule your interview and request a new I20 that reflects all your funding you say you have gotten.

Because the VO works with what is on the I20.

Good morning guys, my visa was denied day before yesterday June 3 at Lagos 6.45am appointment .

Here is my transcript
Me: Good morning madam
VO (A young white lady): did not even answer. (She had denied a lot of people before my turn)
VO: your passport and I20
ME: I passed it.
VO: why are you going to the US?
ME: I am going to the US to pursue my master degree in information security and Assurance, I paused a while, before I added at Johnson and Wales university Providence Rhode Island
VO: what will this course do for you?
ME: there are efforts made by government and private institutions to combat the cybercrimes that are prevalent in our economy, there are limited security experts to join fight this menace. I felt she wasn't even listening or not feeling what I was saying. She cuts me off.
VO: how did you hear about the school?
ME: in 2017, Bcie organised an edu fair in ikeja, that was where I heard about the schools, and also some of their representatives were on ground for the edu fair
VO: did you apply to other school?
ME: yes I did
Vo: mention them.
Me: I did
Vo: did you write any entrance exams?
Me: yes GRE
Vo: who is paying for this
Me: my uncle, he's more or less like a father
Vo: what does he do?
Me: he has a printing press company In Lagos Ekitu and kwara. She cuts me again, (I wanted to add that his company is responsible for printing state government materials and all educational materials for primary sec and tertiary institutions and also into property and estate management.
Vo: are you married,?
Me: I said yes.
Vo: pass me my docs and a pink paper.
Me: I left devastated.

Sincerely this happened within 3mins. She didn't allow me express myself. The way she asked the questions as if let me ask you and give u pink paper and go. She doesn't feel concern at all.

Cost of attendance on i20 is $34000

I do not have any funding, I can only get it during second semester, I was expecting her to ask me questions about why d school, your plans after school and others I have prepared for.

What can I do better? Please advise before I take the next line of action. I don't want to rush to reapply, what should I do please?

Cgpa: 2.93 GRE: 279.
First of all, it is none of your business if the VO denied so many people before you because the VO always has a reason for denial.
If you look at the denials and let it get into you, it will break down your confidence at the time when you need it the most.

What will this course do for you?

It is another way of saying what benefit has this to your career. So you start with the very best intro. The VO doesn't have time for you to build your response.
Your response was not impressive to the VO.

Giw did you hear about the school?
I always say people should talk about how they carried out personal research to validate their findings. Because anyone can come to say good about a school at a fair.

The VO had already made her decision . The rest questions were formalities.

My advice,

Your GPA is not bad, you can retake GRE if you can.
Apply to a course in Computer Science and concentrate in Cybersecurity.
Lots of schools fund Computer Science and I can help with some.

Don't reapply for now.

Pepperoni001:
I'm actually married with two kids.

That's the only error he made.
Ok. Cool

That error is also reflecting in Canada database.

That's my advice for you.
If the VO asks you why there is such a variance you can explain that you were ignorant of the process so you consulted an agent to assist you and that brought about such error.

But now you're well informed about the process .

That might even not be all.

He must have filled that you're married cus that's what those agents are good at.
Like I said , confirm the exact details he filled.

Its a tough one here bro.

You have to show to the VO how you got to make that error.

You can explain that it was done by some agent and misrepresented.. This is a very dicey situation.

Dear Nairalanders,

I have been admitted to Eastern Illinois University graduate school to study sustainable energy for fall 2019. I have received my I-20, paid the sevis fee and also paid visa fee. I have picked a date but yet to fill my DS-160.

Here is the challenge, in 2017 December, I attempted to travel with my twin bro to USA to attend a cousin's wedding. I approached a family friend who runs a visa consultant agency to 'package' us. He collected 200k to assist us pay visa fee, pick dates, fill the form, but he mixed up my educational qualification with that of my brother (I am a food science graduate and my brother is a banking and finance graduate). I didn't even noticed it until it was a day to the interview. Though I was denied, but now it's about time to fill another DS-160 form for my F1 visa though *filing it myself* once beaten, twice shy . Hope it won't raise a red flag and what can I do? Because my WES evaluated transcripts state Bsc Food Science and Technology. Pls advice
It will raise all the color of flags. As far as you took it to the interview , that DS 160 is saved on your profile.

That's why if one changed course or school after denial, you hear them asking why the change.

You have to know exactly what that guy filled for you because any variance is a red flag.

Johnkay101:
Seems you have problem with understanding. Where was I endorsing the guy to attend the school or spend 74k$ for that school?

I am just pointing out that not everyone can get admitted into a top school.

Next time before you jump in, read well.
So what business has that statement with the matter on ground ?

I agree with you not everyone must go to a top school.

My own philosophy is, if I'm not going to a top school , I must go with funding from that school.

But your response came at a wrong time when a critical matter is being handled.

So calm those nerves of yours.

You don't go about spending $74k in a school if it is not an IVY.

If you're well versed, then you will know the full meaning of ROI.

If one can't get the right admission and funding , the best thing to do is wait.

Vo: Why Fisk ?
Me: Aside that I was awarded a full scholarship, there is an on-campus program in Fisk university that really interests me, its the Google In Residence Program. Every fall Google assigns a senior software engineer as an adjunct lecture at Fisk University. The adjunct lecturer teaches the computer science freshman , introduction to computing and programming. They also help computer science majors with internship placement, access to tech fairs and hacklathons and a whole lot of opportunity.
Vo: Why Computer Science ?

Vo: What are your after-school graduation.
Me: After four years of studying Computer science, I will have acquired a lot of experience, skills and knowledge enough to start a digital start-up here in Nigeria. I hope to concentrate on transportation. When we look at the degree of traffic gridlock in Lagos, especially in the Third mainland bridge. This can lead to mental stress, depression and inefficiency. With the power of technology, I hope to solve such social problems.
I also hope to branch into e-commerce , by approaching it from another perspective which is customer-driven. This will help the productivity of retail stores, business start-up and entrepreneur.

My interview is next week Tuesday. Anyone who is willing for a mock interview, please help me.
Any other possible question , please throw them at me.

Thanks
Other possible questions:
When did you finish your O'Level
What have you been doing
Why are you not having your bachelor's degree in Nigeria.

It is Hackathons not Hacklathons

So far your responses are well articulated.

Proposed transcript for interview

Vo: Good morning
Res: good morning

Vo: where are you going to?
Res: I am going to the Morgan State University to pursue a masters degree in Project Management and specialize in Information Technology.

Vo: how did you hear about Morgan State University
Res: I first heard am MSU at a Project Management work shop organized by Agile P3 liMited in Abuja. One of the organized spoke highly of MSU and I also did research using college board , master portal and Peterson where Morgan State was also recommended considering my area of specialization also.

Vo: how many schools did you apply to?
Res: I applied to 2 schools MSU and North eastern University where I was admitted in both schools.MSU gave me admission after being evaluated by the world education service.

Vo: why MSU?
Res: during my application process, the major factors I considered was cost and quality of education.
Morgan State University is registered with the Project Management Institute(PMI) and use the project management book of knowledge (pmbok) which uses the agile method.
Morgan State also has an excellent educational standard and the matches my budget.

Vo: what is your highest degree and what have you been doing after wards?
Res: I have a bachelors degree in Project Management from the Federal University of Technology Akure in 2015. After-which I did my 1year compulsory NYSC where I taught in a secondary school as a maths teacher and I also started an NGO called Emos Intiative that helps train young girls to acquire vocational skills for free.
Presently I work mainly as an Project manager at Bleep company.

Why Masters in Project Management?
Res: as earlier said I have a bachelors degree in Project Management and while working at Shelter gate limited, I noticed a lot of mis management of resources. I created a visual plan using Project Management softwares such as Ms project and presented it to the CEO. I was able to not only reduce resources wastage, but ensure ensure timely execution of projects.
I also did a research during my undergraduate study on the effect of Information communication technology on the Nigerian economic growth.
I focused that ICT is one of the major driving force of organizational competition and the due to the rapid development of the ICT industry , there has been a great increase in the GDP of Nigeria.

Vo: what is your study plan?
Res: the study plan involves a 30 credit program where is will take courses such as Project Management, cost management, risk management as well as information technology courses.

Vo: who will be sponsoring you?
My uncle will be sponsoring me. He is the CEO of Bleep company. He has been my guardian and has been responsible for my education. Here is an affidavit of support by him stating that he will be responsible for my education. He has been the major motivation in advancing in both life and career.

Vo: What will the program do for you?
Res: I plan to come back to Nigeria and use the knowledge and experience I must have gained in MSU to contribute my quota in the Nigeria Project Management world. I intend to use the knowledge I have obtained to run operations and manage resources better most especially in the IT department. It is evident that Nigeria lacks adequate professionals in this field. I intend to create a niche that that improve the economy of this country.
Here's a quick one from me

How did you hear about the school?
Kindly add how you carried out personal research to validate your findings about the school .

Why MSU?
Those your responses are way too shallow. Not convincing at all. Not well thought and doesn't depict you have a career plan.

Why project management?
This is another way of asking how does project management help you in your career aspirations.
It is not an opportunity to talk about your JD. And remember most VOs are not in the mood to listen to long sermons. Place your best foot forward in all your responses because they can cut you short when the deal breaker is still inside your mouth.

What will this degree do for you?
Rephrase that to be succinct and more convincing.

May God's favour be with you.
