TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp said on Friday it planned to take a 5 percent share of smaller Japanese rival Mazda Motor Corp, as part of an alliance that will see the two build a $1.6 billion U.S. assembly plant and work together on electric vehicles.

The plant was a surprise for investors at a time of cooling U.S. sales, but marked good news for U.S. President Donald Trump who came to office on the back of promises to bring back manufacturing and jobs for U.S. workers. He commented on Twitter that it was a "great investment in American manufacturing".

The plant, whose location is not yet public, will be able to produce 300,000 vehicles a year, with production divided between the two automakers, and employ about 4,000 people. It will start operating in 2021.

Analysts said the plan was more than a political ploy. The alliance is also an attempt to catch up with rivals in the race for electric car technology, as tighter global emissions rules loom, along with the entry of new players into the market.

"There will be new rivals appearing - Apple, Google - these are IT companies, we also need to compete with them, too," Toyota President Akio Toyoda, grandson of the company's founder, told a news conference in Tokyo.

He was appointed last year to lead Toyota's newly formed electric car division, flagging the group's commitment to a technology it has been slow to embrace.

"What's different from the past is that there are no nautical charts for us to follow. It's without precedent," he said of the push into alternatives to the internal combustion engine.

Other traditional automakers such as Daimler and BMW are also weighing how best to work on new, disruptive technology, from electric vehicles to autonomous driving, that require hefty investment and have turned firms like Google and Tesla into rivals.


Toyota has set a goal for all of its vehicles to be zero emission by 2050. But until recently, it has said it favoured EVs for short-distance commuting, given their limited driving range and lengthy charging time.

It has been investing heavily in hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles (FCVs), while rivals such as Nissan Motor Co, Volkswagen AG and Tesla have touted pure electric cars as the most viable zero-emission vehicles.

As part of the agreement, as well as electric car technology, Toyota and Mazda will work together to develop in-car information technologies and automated driving functions.

BULKING UP

Toyota, Japan's biggest auto company, has been forging alliances with smaller rivals for several years, effectively engineering a loose network at the heart of the Japanese auto sector. It already owns a 16.5 percent stake in sixth-ranked Subaru Corp with which it also has a development partnership.

Toyota is also courting compact car maker Suzuki Motor Corp to cooperate on R&D and parts supply, as Toyota seeks to tap its smaller rival's expertise in emerging Asian markets.

As part of Friday's plan, Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker by vehicle sales last year, will take a 5 percent share of Mazda, and Mazda will take a 0.25 percent share of Toyota.

Mazda said it could even expand the alliance, as long as it could stay in control of its own management. "We will study the possibility of expanding the capital alliance, but the basic premise is that autonomy is assured," said Mazda Executive Vice President Akira Marumoto.

"For a technology company which lacks the expertise in making cars, Mazda could look like a very interesting acquisition. They're very good, they're not too expensive. Maybe Toyota realises this," CLSA managing director Chris Richter said.

"By buying a 5 percent stake, Toyota takes Mazda off the table rather than having it sit out there like a free agent which could someday be used against them."

Mazda, for its part, stands to gain from a deal that gives the small automaker a production foothold in the United States. At the moment, it ships all vehicles sold in the country, its biggest market, from its plants in Japan and Mexico.

With an R&D budget of around 140 billion yen ($1.27 billion) this year, a fraction of Toyota's 1 trillion yen, Mazda lacks the funds to develop electric cars on its own, a predicament shared by Subaru and Suzuki.

"Mazda needs electrification technology. In the past, they've pooh-poohed EVs, they've felt they can make internal combustion engines more efficient, but the bottom line is that globally you need to have this technology," said Janet Lewis, head of Asia transportation research at Macquarie Securities.

The automakers plan to produce Toyota Corollas and a new Mazda SUV crossover at the new plant, and the companies said they could eventually build other cars including electric vehicles.

Toyota initially had been planning to produce Corollas at its new $1 billion plant being built in Mexico, prompting Trump to threaten punitive tariffs.

The company has since said it will instead produce its Tacoma truck model in Mexico.

James Bond is set to return to the big screen for the 25th time in November 2019, and reports suggest Daniel Craig may reprise the role.

According to the New York Times, sources "briefed on the matter" have confirmed the actor's return as 007, while producers say it is too early to confirm cast and director.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer announced on Monday the next instalment will arrive in cinemas in 2019, scripted by long-standing Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade.

James Bond will return to US cinemas on November 8, 2019 with a traditional earlier release in the UK and the rest of the world.

Purvis and Wade started in 1999's The World Is Not Enough and penned the last six Bond films.

In a statement, the company also confirmed Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli will return as producers. They have been associated with the franchise since the 1970s.

The announcement comes amid rumours that Craig would not be playing Bond again, after he famously told Time Out magazine he would "rather slash my wrists" than do it again.

Meanwhile actors like Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston have all said they would be honoured to succeed Craig as the film world's most famous spy.

If Daniel Craig does return as Bond, it will be the fifth time he has played the role.

His last 007 film, Spectre, was released in 2015 and took more than £95m at the UK box-office - making it the third most successful film of all time in Britain.

2012's Skyfall, which took £103m, is Britain's second biggest grossing film ever.

Tesla has made a major advancement toward its aim of making electric cars available to all with the roll-out of its latest Model 3 car.

The first batch of the affordable electric vehicles emerged from the company's California factory on Friday, kick-starting an ambitious production drive that many think could revolutionise the industry.

More than 500,000 customers have placed deposits for the vehicles, which will now be produced at a rate of 5,000 a week, increasing to 10,000 a week next year.

Tesla founder Elon Musk called the Model 3 "the best car for its cost, either electric or gasoline", and called the achievement a major step towards the aim of an electric car "that everyone can buy".

The new vehicles will market at around £27,000 ($35,000), significantly cheaper than the £60,000 ($80,000) price tag of Tesla's current S and X models.

Mr Musk said revenue from the more expensive models has funded the new line.

Smaller than its higher-range predecessors and with fewer options, the Model 3 still comes equipped with on-board computers that Mr Musk says prepare it for a self-driving future.

But he added that coordinating thousands of parts from global suppliers meant that even small mishaps could cause delays to his ambitious targets.

"Welcome to production hell," he quipped at Friday's launch. "This is where we are for at least six months."

The majority of the vehicle's first buyers are Tesla employees. Many ordering the Model 3 have been told not to expect their cars until next year.

While the high volume of orders has it tipped as a game-changer, the Model 3 is not the first affordable electric car on the market. GM's Bolt model also sells at $35,000, but poor sales have recently prompted a pause in its production.

Mr Musk, an internationally renowned tech entrepreneur, also runs projects building rechargeable batteries to power homes, sending paying customers to the moon, and designing near-supersonic rail travel.

The impressive sales of the Model 3 could mark a breakthrough for Tesla and electric cars, which until now have comprised only a small portion of the auto market.

Gene Munster, an analyst with research firm Loup Ventures, said Tesla could transform the industry.

"We believe we will eventually look back at the launch of the Model 3 and compare it to the iPhone, which proved to be the catalyst for the shift to mobile computing," he said.

Serena Williams and her fiancé, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, have quickly become one of the greatest power couples of our time.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Williams revealed how the soon-to-be parents met and later fell in love.

The two first laid eyes on each other in May of 2015, when Ohanian sat down at a table next to Williams at their shared hotel in Rome, Italy. It was far from love at first sight, as the slightly hungover Reddit co-founder didn’t realize Williams was annoyed by his seating choice.

“This big guy comes and he just plops down at the table next to us, and I’m like, ‘Huh! All these tables and he’s sitting here?’” Williams told Vanity Fair. The 35-year-old and her friends tried their best to annoy Ohanian into moving away from them.

More than two decades after his death, Pablo Escobar remains as well known as he was during his heyday as the head of the Medellín drug cartel. His fixture in popular culture is largely thanks to countless books, movies, and songs. We’ve decided to make our contribution with a list of facts about the life of the larger-than-life Escobar.
Rise to Power
Escobar, the son of a farmer and a schoolteacher, began his life of crime while still a teenager. According to some reports, his first illegal scheme was selling fake diplomas. He then branched out into falsifying report cards before smuggling stereo equipment and stealing tombstones in order to resell them. Escobar also stole cars, and it was this offense that resulted in his first arrest, in 1974. Shortly thereafter, he became an established drug smuggler, and by the mid-1970s he had helped found the crime organization that evolved into the Medellín cartel.
Mucho Dinero
At the height of its power, the Medellín cartel dominated the cocaine trade, earning an estimated $420 million a week and making its leader one of the wealthiest people in the world. With a reported worth of $25 billion, Escobar had ample money to spend—and he did. His lavish lifestyle included private planes, luxurious homes (see below), and over-the-top parties. In the late 1980s he reportedly offered to pay off his country’s debt of $10 billion if he would be exempt from any extradition treaty. In addition, while his family was on the run in 1992–93, Escobar reportedly burned $2 million in order to keep his daughter warm. Despite his best efforts, however, even Escobar couldn’t spend all that money, and much of it was stored in warehouses and fields. According to his brother, about 10%, or $2.1 billion, was written off annually—eaten by rats or destroyed by the elements. In some cases, it was simply lost.
Hacienda Nápoles
Escobar owned a number of palatial homes, but his most-notable property was the 7,000-acre estate known as Hacienda Nápoles (named after Naples, Italy), located between Bogotá and Medellín. Reportedly costing $63 million, it included a soccer field, dinosaur statues, artificial lakes, a bullfighting arena, the charred remains of a classic car collection destroyed by a rival cartel, an airstrip, a tennis court, and a zoo (more on that later). The estate—the front gate of which is topped by the plane he used on his first drug run to the U.S.—was later looted by locals, and it is now a popular tourist attraction.
King of the Jungle
Escobar’s private zoo was home to some 200 animals, including elephants, ostriches, zebras, camels, and giraffes. Many of the creatures were smuggled into the country aboard Escobar’s drug planes. After his death in 1993, most of the animals were transferred to zoos. However, four hippopotamuses were left behind. They soon multiplied, and by 2016 upwards of 40 lived in the area. The potentially dangerous animals have damaged farms and inspired fear in locals. Authorities began castrating male hippos in an effort to control the population.

Robin Hood
Perhaps hoping to win the support of everyday Colombians, Escobar became known for his philanthropic efforts, which led to the nickname “Robin Hood.” He built hospitals, stadiums, and housing for the poor. He even sponsored local soccer teams. His popularity with many Colombians was demonstrated when he was elected to an alternate seat in the country’s Congress in 1982. Alas, two years later he was forced to resign after a campaign to expose his criminal activities. The justice minister who led the efforts was assassinated.
“Plata o Plomo”
Escobar’s way of handling problems was “plata o plomo,” meaning “silver” (bribes) or “lead” (bullets). While he preferred the former, he had no qualms about the latter option, earning a reputation for ruthlessness. He reportedly killed some 4,000 people, including numerous police officers and government officials. In 1989 the cartel was blamed for detonating a bomb on a plane that was carrying an alleged informant. Some 100 people died.

La Catedral
In 1991 Escobar offered to turn himself in to authorities—if he was allowed to build his own prison. Surprisingly—or perhaps not—Colombian officials agreed. The result was the luxurious La Catedral. Not only did the facility include a nightclub, a sauna, a waterfall, and a soccer field; it also had telephones, computers, and fax machines. However, after Escobar tortured and killed two cartel members at La Catedral, officials decided to move him to a less-accommodating prison. Before he could be transferred, however, Escobar escaped, in July 1992. And that brings us to…
The King Is Muerto
After his escape, the Colombian government—reportedly aided by U.S. officials and rival drug traffickers—launched a massive manhunt. On December 2, 1993, Escobar celebrated his 54th birthday, allegedly enjoying cake, wine, and marijuana. The next day, his hideout in Medellín was discovered. While Colombian forces stormed the building, Escobar and a bodyguard managed to get to the roof. A chase and gunfight ensued, and Escobar was fatally shot. Some, however, have speculated that Escobar took his own life. The drug lord, who faced possible extradition to the U.S. if arrested, had once said that he “would rather have a grave in Colombia than a jail cell in the U.S.”

John Heard, best known as Peter McAllister in the "Home Alone" movies and who appeared in a wide range of TV and film roles, has died at 71.

He was found dead in a Palo Alto, California, hotel where he was recovering after undergoing minor back surgery Wednesday, Heard's manager told NBC News. The Santa Clara Medical Examiner's office also confirmed his death and said the cause is pending further testing.

"Based on the investigation conducted thus far, there is no evidence of foul play," the office said in a statement.

Manager Tammy Hunt said that Heard will be "very much missed by his family, friends, and his many fans."

"John was one of those people that you meet and know immediately that he is one of a kind," she said in a statement. "A true professional and dear gentleman."

The prolific actor also appeared in "Cat People," "After Hours," "Big," "Beaches," "Gladiator," and on TV in "Miami Vice" and "The Sopranos," for which he won an Emmy nomination.

Born in Washington, D.C., Heard started out acting off-Broadway. His first major role came in the romantic comedy "Chilly Scenes of Winter" in 1979.

His memorable roles in the 1980s included starring in "Cutter's Way," playing Nastassja Kinski's lover in the 1983 remake of "Cat People," and starring alongside "Home Alone" actor Daniel Stern in 1984's "C.H.U.D." In Martin Scorsese's "After Hours," he played the bartender Tom Schorr. His other films during that period included "The Trip to Bountiful," "Heaven Help Us" and "The Milagro Beanfield War."

In 1988, he starred as Elizabeth Perkins' jilted boyfriend in "Big" and co-starred with Bette Midler in "Beaches."

His other roles included "Gladiator," "Awakenings," "Radio Flyer," and "The Pelican Brief," in which he played an FBI agent.

Heard was married to actress Margot Kidder and had a son from a relationship with actress Melissa Leo. He is also survived by a son and a daughter from a later marriage.

The next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations will be held in June and July 2019 and feature eight extra teams, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced.CAF said on Thursday after a meeting of its executive committee that the tournament will expand for the first time since 1996 and be switched from its usual slot in January and February.

The move will result in AFCON no longer clashing with the middle of the European season, meaning clubs will not have to cope without African players who are called up for the tournament.AFCON will also be held exclusively in Africa and feature only nations from the continent following suggestions CAF could host the tournament elsewhere and invite non-African teams to compete.Cameroon, the holders of the AFCON title after beating Egypt in February's final, will host the next finals in 2019, with 24 nations to be included in the competition for the first time.An inspection will be conducted in early September to ensure Cameroon are on track to hold the tournament. Cameroon's sports minister Pierre Ismael Bidoung has this week denied reports the country is falling behind with preparations as hosts.
