Tennis pro Venus Williams is responsible for a Florida car crash that landed an elderly man in the hospital before his eventual death, according to a report. Jerome Barson, 78, endured head trauma in the June 9 collision and died two weeks later in an intensive care unit Sunday, TMZ reported Thursday. Barson’s wife reportedly told police she T-boned Williams’ SUV traveling westbound in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., after the athlete abruptly entered an intersection northbound. “(Williams) is at fault for violating the right of way of (the other driver),” the police report allegedly said. The tennis great blamed the crash on heavy traffic that left her vehicle jutting out into the intersection, according to the report. Cops did not believe she'd been distracted by a device or under drug or alcohol influence. Barson’s wife was reportedly also hospitalized for injuries, including broken bones. |
There is a different side to Lionel Messi, one that not everyone gets to see. The player who shines with the ball by his feet appears to be extremely shy off the field. But the timid-looking Argentina star, who for years has been attracting the world's attention because of his mind-boggling soccer skills, is an outgoing, cheerful and humorous character when he is among those he knows and trusts. It's the lighthearted and extroverted version of Messi that will be the center of attention on Friday in his hometown of Rosario when he marries 29-year-old Antonela Roccuzzo, his childhood sweetheart and mother of his two children. The wedding is a highly anticipated event in the central Argentine city, located about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northwest of the capital of Buenos Aires, although the public is not expected to have any access to the festivities. About 250 guests, including some current and former teammates, are expected to attend the ceremony in a five-star hotel that overlooks the city's largest shantytown. Special security measures are expected to be in place as guests begin arriving for the event. Among those expected to attend are Barcelona teammates Neymar, Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique. Colombian singer Shakira, Pique's wife, is also expected at the ceremony. Organizers said personal hairdressers will be available for the guests, along with entertainment services for their children. About 150 journalists will be allowed to cover the wedding under very strict rules, without any direct access to the ceremony or the party. Messi and Roccuzzo have requested that wedding gifts come in the form of donations to the Leo Messi Foundation. Messi is already in Rosario on vacation, but hasn't made any public appearances. He was in the city to celebrate his 30th birthday this week. Messi grew up in a lower-middle-class neighborhood in Rosario along with two brothers and a sister. Roccuzzo was the cousin of a close friend of Messi, and the two were always around each other and shared a close relationship from a young age. They stayed in touch after Messi left to play in Spain as a teenager, and eventually started their relationship in the late 2000s, reportedly after he returned to Argentina following the death of one of Roccuzzo's close friends in a traffic accident. Roccuzzo eventually moved to Barcelona, where the couple have two boys, 4-year-old Thiago and 1-year-old Mateo. "I'm a normal person. I have the same life as any human being," Messi said in an interview with ESPN before the 2014 World Cup. "When I finish playing, I have my family, my friends. I live like any other person." Even before Messi turned into one of the best players in the world, he was already the type of person who kept to himself and avoided the spotlight but opened up in the company of friends and relatives. People close to Messi and some of his former teammates say he is just a normal guy, talkative and often joking. The serious-looking player who rarely shows any expressions on the field or in front of the cameras is nothing like "the real Messi," they say. "No, no, no ...," former Barcelona teammate Jonathan Dos Santos said when asked if Messi was as shy as he appears. Dos Santos, in Russia with Mexico's national soccer team at the Confederations Cup, said that Messi always opened up while with his teammates. "He is a great guy, just a great guy," said Dos Santos, who was a teammate of Messi's at Barcelona from 2009-14. Messi and his family recently were photographed with friends on vacation on a boat in Ibiza. Messi was seen playing with his children and laughing with his friends. It was the same when an Uruguayan television channel showed footage of Messi and Suarez playing cards with friends, with Messi joking and smiling all the time. Messi, who has tattoos of both of his children, showed a more rebellious side of himself recently, dying his hair blond. He also has tattoos honoring his mother and Jesus. He became much more active in social media recently, opening an Instagram account and posting many pictures of his children and some private moments with his family. "I think that on the field I'm completely different than I am off," Messi told Television Publica Argentina a few years ago. The soft-spoken Messi rarely speaks publicly and almost never talks to the media after or before games. Only a few times he has shown up at news conferences during tournaments with his club or national team. Messi moved to Barcelona when he was 13 after being diagnosed with a hormone disorder that affected his growth. Barcelona offered to help him with the treatment. The entire family initially moved with him, but Messi's mother and two siblings soon returned to Argentina. Messi stayed in Spain with his father, but he couldn't play at first because he didn't have the proper documentation. "One day I asked him, 'What do you want to do? Because in the end, the decision is yours,'" his father, Jorge, said in a television documentary about Messi's life. "And he told me, 'I want to stay. I want to play for Barcelona.'" Now he wants to get married, and he's gone back home to do it.

Pre-season is looming and, as ever, the Premier League clubs are jetting off to all four corners of the globe as they build up to the new campaign. From Los Angeles to Sydney, Houston to Reykjavik, the 20 top-flight sides will entertain fans all over the world, racking up almost 170,000 miles in the process. Arsenal, the only team travelling to Australia this summer, are comfortably covering the most distance at 21,202 miles. They take on A-League sides Sydney and Western Sydney Wanderers 'Down Under' before flying up to China for friendlies against Bayern Munich in Shanghai and Chelsea in Beijing. Jose Mourinho's Manchester United return to the States this summer, playing five games out there on a 16,000-mile criss-cross journey that takes them to Los Angeles, Utah, Houston, Santa Clara and Washington. After friendlies against Major League Soccer teams Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, United play heavyweights Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona in the International Champions' Cup. The Reds also have tour stop-offs in Oslo and Dublin before the season gets underway, not to mention the UEFA Super Cup clash with Real Madrid, which is being hosted in Skopje, Macedonia. City's players won't be too far behind them when it comes to frequent flyer points this summer, as they also take part in the Champions' Cup against United, Real Madrid and Tottenham. Pep Guardiola's side are also due in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik on August 4 for a match against West Ham. Liverpool are globe-trotting as well, travelling over 14,000 miles and taking in Hong Kong, Berlin, Munich and Dublin in order to get pumped up for the season. Jurgen Klopp's Reds will take on Leicester City, West Brom and Crystal Palace when out in the Far East as part of the Premier League Asia Trophy. Chelsea are heading that way, too, playing Arsenal in Beijing and then a couple of Champions' Cup matches against Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in Singapore. In all, the Premier League champions will clock up 14,607 miles on their travels. West Brom are surprise jet setters next month, covering 15,632 miles as they head to Hong Kong, Germany and Spain, as well as a series of domestic games. Swansea are also heading on a three-stop US tour, while Everton play a friendly in Tanzania. Other teams are content to pursue a schedule closer to home, with Austria, Spain and Germany among the popular spots for a training camp. Southampton are the only side with a purely domestic agenda at present, but they've only announced one pre-season friendly to date. It means the overall total will certainly rise. With this being a vacant summer without a World Cup or European Championship, most of the Premier League sides are seizing the opportunity to take full strength squads overseas. As ever, they must strike a fine balance between readying their squad for the challenges ahead and pursuing commercial opportunities all around the world. |

Actress Michelle Rodriguez has threatened to leave the Fast and Furious film series if the franchise doesn’t improve the roles it creates for female actors. The actor, who stars as the street racer Leticia “Letty” Ortiz in the films, made the comments on Instagram. “F8 is out digitally today, I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one,” she wrote, “or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise.” She added: “It’s been a good ride & I’m grateful for the opportunity the fans & studio have provided over the years … One Love.” Rodriguez has appeared in five Fast and Furious films, most recently The Fate of the Furious (titled Fast and Furious 8 outside the US). While that movie introduced two new female characters, played by Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren, Rodriguez had limited screen time, and the film had a greater focus on male actors such as Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. Rodriguez has previously expressed concern about the overly masculine nature of the franchise. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month she said that the tone of the franchise was male-focused because of the violent criminal world it represents. She had hoped that as the series progressed it would evolve out of that “90s macho vibe”, but the film series’ growing popularity in developing markets like China, where “the grand majority of the population are boys”, had made that impossible. “At the end of the day, what message are we sending out there for women?” Rodriguez said. “It does weigh heavy on [me], especially in the male-dominated environment that I work in,” she said. The Fate of the Furious was released in April and has grossed over $1bn at the worldwide box office, with a combined gross of the eight-film series to over $5bn globally.

Scott Parker has called time on his 20-year playing career. The former Chelsea, Tottenham and West Ham midfielder has announced his retirement from the game at the end of a career during which he won 18 England caps. Parker was named Football Writers Player of the Year for 2010-11 and was part of the Three Lions squad which competed in the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine the following year. In a statement confirming his decision to quit, Parker said that now is 'the right time to move on to the next chapter in my life'. He said: 'The decision to retire has not been an easy one for me but having thought long and hard over it, and having discussed it with those closest to me, I believe that now is the right time to move on to the next chapter in my life and career. 'When I started my career at Charlton Athletic all those years ago I could only have dreamt at that time just what was to follow over the next two decades. I feel incredibly honoured and proud to have enjoyed the career that I have and I've loved every moment of it.' Parker turned professional at Charlton after coming through the rank at The Valley. His performances for the Addicks over the course of seven years brought him to the attention of Chelsea, who spent £10million to sign the midfielder in 2004. That same year he was placed on the standby list for the Euro 2004 England squad, though he didn't make the cut for the tournament in Portugal. He would go on to win 18 caps for his country and captain his country on one occasion - a friendly against Holland at Wembley in 2012. Things didn't work out for Parker at Stamford Bridge - he only made 15 league appearances for the Blues before leaving for Newcastle. After two years he was on the move again, this time to West Ham where he rediscovered some of the best form of his career. In 2011 he moved across the capital to Tottenham and two years later was transferred to Fulham. He remains the only player to have represented five London clubs in the Premier League.

Actor Michael Nyqvist, who starred in the original film version of Stieg Larsson's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, has died aged 56. The Swedish actor had suffered from lung cancer for a year and died on Tuesday, surrounded by family. He was best known for his role as Mikael Blomkvist in the Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and its sequels in the Millennium trilogy. The 2009 film saw him play an investigative journalist who works with computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, a role played by Noomi Rapace. The success of the series inspired an American film adaptation, which was released two years later. Daniel Craig took over Nyqvist's role as Blomkvist, and Rooney Mara starred as Lisbeth Salander. In a statement, Nyqvist's family said: "Michael's joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. "His charm and charisma were undeniable." They added that his death had left a "huge void". Nyqvist also starred in Hollywood blockbusters including John Wick and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and in 2015 he starred in Colonia with Daniel Bruhl and Emma Watson. His memoir, Just After Dreaming published in 2010, was about his childhood and adoption and tracing his biological parents at the age of 30. He is survived by his wife Catharina Ehrnrooth, and their children, Ellen and Arthur.
