The Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr Mohammed Adoke, has taken over the prosecution of a businessman and Cross Country boss, Bube Okorodudu, standing trial on a N82.8 million theft charge. Mr D.E. Kaswe, a lawyer from the AGF’s office, made this known on Wednesday at the resumption of Okorodudu’s case before Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo of an Ikeja High Court. Okorodudu and his transport firm — Cross Country Ltd – are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The defendants were charged alongside another company, Car Link Ltd, on an eight- count bordering on conspiracy, stealing, forgery and uttering. The EFCC had alleged that they stole the money through the fraudulent sale of 17 units of Volkswagen transporter buses belonging to AG Moeller Ltd and Mr Adeloye Olukemi. At the resumed hearing of the case on Wednesday, Kaswe told the court that the Attorney-General took over the case from the EFCC on Sept. 8 while the court was on vacation. He said: “Having taken over the matter, we have written to the EFCC which hitherto was handling it to give us the original case file. “The AGF took over the matter because there is another case at the Federal High Court in Lagos and we want to examine the files and reach our own conclusions.” Kaswe, therefore, asked the court for an adjournment to enable the AGF’s office to get the file from the EFCC. Also addressing the court, the defence counsel, Mr Taiwo Taiwo, said Okorodudu had voluntarily turned himself into the police as directed by the court on July 1. “The first defendant (Okorodudu) was in their custody and came to court on July 14 but the court could not sit due to the strike by judiciary workers. “He was thereafter granted administrative bail by the police and the reason he is not here today is because I was not aware that the matter would be coming up today,” Taiwo added. Reacting to the development, Lawal-Akapo, noted that the directive by the National Judicial Council was that judges should give priority to high profile criminal cases. ” I am not in any way impressed with the explanation given by the prosecution counsel that the AGF office is still trying to take over the original case file from the EFCC since Sept. 8. “Counsel from both sides should assist the court in dealing speedily with this matter.” The judge also held that the bench warrant issued against Okorodudu on July 1 was still in force. Lawal-Akapo ordered the police to arrest and produce him in court at the next date of adjournment fixed for Dec. 2. ONITSHA – Leader of the Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike has charged his subjects not to be afraid to proclaim the name of Biafra any where they may find themselves. He maintained that fear of mentioning Biafra’s name in any part of the country should not arise because MASSOB is itself the fear and mere mentioning its name is enough to scare those he identified as saboteurs, adding that there is nothing whatsoever to be afraid of since an Igbo adage says that “fear does not fear anything”. He therefore charged his members to go all over the place and campaign for the independence of Biafra without violence, as contained in the popular voice of former Biafran Head of State and respected Igbo leader, Late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu. Uwazuruike who gave the charge yesterday at Ojukwu’s Memorial Library, in new Owerri, Imo State, further declared: “The signs of Nigeria’s break-up are everywhere”. In Nigeria, it is only the Igbo of Eastern Nigeria that is seeking for independence through MASSOB. While MASSOB seeks for freedom, self determination, secession and the sovereignty of Biafra, adding, South West seeks for true federalism, but in their minds they want an Oduduwa Republic”. He further declared: “Our brothers in the South- South seeks for resource control of what God had given them, but in their minds they want a country where their children and children’s children can proudly call their own. Therefore, anybody who fights against Biafra fights against God and the people and let me assure you that a free state of Biafra will assist America in the global war against terrorism”. Meanwhile the leadership of MASSOB has accused the police in Anambra state of invasion of its Ayamelum regional office at Anaku in Ayamelum Local Government Area of the state. In a statement issued to newsmen yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra state, MASSOB’s Deputy Director for Information and Anambra North Zonal leader, Mazi Chris Mocha said the body does not pose any security risk to the Nigerian State to have warranted such action to be meted out to an organization that preaches and practices non-violence. Mocha listed some items suspected to have been taken away by the police team to include; cash worth N93,020, adding that the police team also set ablaze the Biafra, US and Israeli flags hung by MASSOB members on top of its one storey building housing its office, just as the police equally made away with six foreign chairs valued at N30,000 and 12 executive chairs valued at N23,200. . The statement further alleged that the policemen drafted from Ayamelum Divisional Headquarters, Anaku broke the doors of the building and allegedly gained access into the building where they also arrested six passersby including, two females and four males who were not even members of the movement. He warned Nigerian security agencies, particularly the police to desist from further clamping down on armless MASSOB members for no just course or else they would go to court in each occasion to challenge their unlawful harassment, intimidation and illegal raiding and looting of their offices, henceforth. source: www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/dont-afraid-proclaim-biafra-uwazuruike-tells-massob/ |

Most of whom are governors now were under 30years. The brief democratic dispensation which interjected the military interregimes also saw the House of Reppresentatives in paticular populated by majority of members under 30yrs, as well as some Senators. Under 30's were also not in short supply with appointments, we have example of M.T. Mbu who became foreign affairs minister at 23 and Pat Utomi who became a presidential adviser at (27) and so on and so forth. Now, why is it that this age bracket is today still sleeping on 3 seater chairs in their parent homes? Why is it that this age bracket is today still collecting pocket money from their parents? Why is it that this age bracket is today still writting JAMB? Why is it that this age bracket is today still sagging their trousers? Why is it that this age bracket is today still searching for jobs? Why is it that this age bracket is today no longer qualified to even be leaders of youth wings of political parties? Why is it that this age bracket is today so docile? Why is it that this age bracket is today still in capable of feeding itself? Why is it that this age bracket is today barred by law from even aspiring to certain political offices? Why is it that this age bracket is today incapacitated, unwilling, unable and incapable of asking questions? Let us wake up from our slumbers and chase out these avaricious seniors away forever. Abuja – The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo–Iweala, has assured Nigerians that the economy is growing positively in spite of the reduction of oil price in the international market. Okonjo-Iweala, who stated this on Tuesday at the 2014 Ministerial Platform in Abuja, said the nation was not broke as being speculated in the media. She said “if you look back two years ago, that title `is Nigeria broke‘ was written in a newspaper article, it is like people are trying to force Nigeria into brokerage. “I think since two years, we have managed to keep things going, let me explain these; Nigeria is a country that depends on a stream of income. “That income is being able to collect taxes from companies, individuals and our income is also based on selling a product and that product you take to market and you take whatever price a buyer is willing to pay.’’ According to her, government is doing everything within its power to ensure economic stability in the country. She said that presently, government had been budgeting below the existing oil price to help build buffers in case of uncertainty. “We are operating an economy that depends on a product that fluctuates with oil price and we don’t have the right to control the price. “Just like you have in your own household, when the quantity diminishes or the price drops, you remember in 2007 to 2008, the price of oil dropped from 140 dollars to 38 dollars. “At that time, nobody asked if the country was broke because we had saved up 22 billion dollars in the Excess Crude Account and we were able to continue spending and to stablise the economy.’’ The minister said that presently Nigeria was faced with fluctuations in quantity and price of oil, adding that it had affected the amount paid into government coffers. “Does that mean that the country is broke? We still have resources that we depend on; we still have the ability to tax. “Sometimes, things need to be a little tighter, easier and we just have to weather it and manage ourselves but that does not amount to the country being broke.’’ The finance minister said if government was not able to pay salaries to people and continue to manage, “then we can say that the country is broke but we have not gotten there yet.’’ She urged Nigerians to bear with the nature of the economy, adding that it was the reason every effort was challenged to ensure the economy was diversified. Commenting on the management of the fiscal deficit, she said that the Ministry of Finance would continue to ensure that it was kept as narrow as possible. She said that in 2013, the debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ration was 1.4 per cent and 1.03 per cent in 2014 and projected to be one per cent in 2015 budget. . She added that borrowing had been on the decline and external debt stood at N1.46 trillion or 14 per cent of the total debt. The ministry had adopted prudence to debt management and Nigeria’s debt to GDP remained one of the lowest in the world. (NAN) source: www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/nigeria-is-not-broke-okonjo-iweala/ |
A new device similar to a simple pregnancy home-test could allow doctors to diagnose a patient with suspected Ebola in under 15 minutes, its French developers said Tuesday. Trials at a high-security lab have validated the technique and prototype kits should be available in Ebola-hit countries by the end of October for a clinical trial, France’s Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) said in a statement. The diagnostic tool, not yet approved by regulators, works by monoclonal antibodies reacting to the presence of virus in a tiny sample, which can be a drop of blood, plasma or urine, it said. A European pharma company Vedalab is turning it into a user-friendly kit called Ebola eZYSCREEN. Similar to a DIY pregnancy test, a positive result sees a small stripe showing up in a results window on the hand-held device. The kit is simple to use in the field without any additional equipment, said the CEA, which also does non-nuclear research with a possible military or security application. “It can give a result in less than 15 minutes for anyone showing symptoms of the disease,” it said. “Current tests, which are based on genetic detection of the virus, are highly sensitive but need special equipment, take between two and a quarter and two and a half hours and can only be carried out in a lab,” the CEA explained. Scientists at the agency began working on the diagnostic tool in mid-August, when the epidemic in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone worsened. The test is for the so-called Zaire ebolavirus, the strain now circulating in West Africa. The achievement builds on previous Ebola research funded in part by the French defence ministry as part of its anti-bioterrorism programme. This research had “saved more than a year” in development time of the diagnostic test, the CEA said. More than 4,500 people have been killed by Ebola since the start of the year, almost all of them in west Africa. The epidemic has thrown the spotlight on poor infrastructure in the three hardest-hit nations but also the lack of weapons to tackle a disease that until now had been extremely rare and claimed relatively few lives. Other pharmaceutical teams are also working on fast diagnostic tools for Ebola. They include Primerdesign, a spinoff company of Britain’s University of Southampton, and Corgenix Medical Corp of the United States. source: www.vanguardngr.com/2014/10/scientists-develop-devise-diagnose-patient-ebola-15-minutes/ |

Atleast 25 members of the Boko Haram terrorists group were on Sunday night killed by troops of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army in Damboa Local Government Area of Borno state. Security officials have said. The attack on Damboa had cast much doubts that many concerned had expressed over the much talked- about ceasefire deal the federal government said it signed on Friday with the Boko Haram gunmen. It would be recalled that Boko Haram had on the 17th of July 2014 hoisted their flags in Damboa after a deadly gunbattle that left, five policemen, several soldiers and Lieutenant Colonel Commanding the military base in Damboa dead with property worth billions of naira destroyed. A reliable security source in Maiduguri told our Correspondent that the insurgents invaded Damboa town at about 5:15pm on Sunday. Damboa is south and 85km drive from Maiduguri, the state capital. It also share borders with Sambisa forest where Boko Haram has its largest suspected training camp. A resident of Damboa, Mallam Aji Bukar Kura who was among hundreds that fled to Chibok for safety during the attack however said, they were considering coming back to Damboa today (Monday) as they were informed by security operatives that the attack was repelled and more than two dozens of them were killed. Another source said “terrorists numbering over 100 in 7 Hilux pickup vans and motorcycles fully armed with Rocket Propelled Launchers, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), AK47 rifles stormed the town on Sunday night, they realized that the town has started picking up live following returning back of many fleeing residents after military took over from the terrorists who had captured the town in June this year, but we are happy that they were confronted”. He however commended the gallantry effort of the military troops in Damboa for successfully repelling the attack which led to the killing over over 20 terrorists with the recovery of arms and ammunitions. A text message sent to the Director Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade successfully delivered and a phone call put to him for confirmation was not answered as at press time. But a top security source who is not authorized to talk to the press confirmed the incident in Maiduguri yesterday. He said, “There was an attack on Damboa on Sunday evening and our soldiers had effectively repelled them and killed 25 of them during a shootout. “The soldiers were able to recover several ammunition including a ‘Buffallo Armoured Personnel Carrier which the terrorists abandoned”, he said.
