Stick With God’s Plan (1) Tue, 22 Mar 2022 ‘God always does what He plans.’ Ephesians 1:11 God said, ‘I am Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the beginning and the end.’ (Revelation 22:13 CEV) God determines the end result He wants, then starts at the beginning and works towards it. He ‘always does what He plans.’ Joseph discovered that even when your family turns against you, God’s plan is still in effect. Looking back, he said, ‘You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good.’ (Genesis 50:20 NIV) But don’t confuse ‘good’ with ‘comfortable’. When God corrects or redirects you, it doesn’t always feel good. But it is good! David said, ‘When You corrected me, it did me good because it taught me.’ (Psalm 119:71 CEV) If you’re not sure of God’s plan, seek Him until He shows it to you. Other things may seem more urgent, but nothing is more important. And if you already know God’s plan, rest assured that no human action can cancel it. The psalmist wrote, ‘The Lord will vindicate me; Your love… endures forever.’ (Psalm 138:8 NIV) There is no situation Satan can devise for which God hasn’t already made ‘the way of escape.’ Paul reassures us: ‘God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted [tested] beyond what you are able, but with the temptation [testing] will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.’ (1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV) It’s in your times of testing that you discover ‘God is faithful’. He will stretch you, but never beyond your breaking point. His plan is for you to come out of this experience stronger and ready for what’s next on His agenda. |

Forgive Your Parents (2) Mon, 21 Mar 2022 ‘Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.’ Luke 6:37 Once you understand that parents aren’t always capable of giving their kids what they didn’t get themselves—namely love, nurturing, acceptance, and physical affection—it becomes easier to forgive them. Stormie Omartian says: ‘Sometimes what one parent didn’t do hurts as bad as what the abusing one did. A parent’s uninvolvement or unwillingness to step in and rescue you feels like a betrayal. Unforgiveness for that uninvolved parent is more difficult to recognise but is more common than we think. Ask God to show you any unforgiveness towards a parent who didn’t come to your rescue. If it’s there, you have to deal honestly with your feelings… We can’t go back in time and get someone to hold and nurture us, and we mustn’t demand it from a spouse or friends because they can’t do it. It [must] come from our heavenly Father… The first step… is to receive [His] forgiveness and let its reality penetrate the deepest part of our being. When we realise how much we have been forgiven… we have no right to pass judgment on… another. Being forgiven and released from everything we’ve ever done is such a miraculous gift, how could we refuse to obey God when He asks us to forgive others? Forgiveness is a two-way street. God forgives you, and you forgive others… We base our decision not on what we feel like doing but on what we know is right.’ Jesus said, ‘Do not judge… and you will not be judged… Forgive… and you will be forgiven.’ (Luke 6:37 NLT) Choosing to forgive and not let somebody else’s sin dictate what you feel or do frees you to live in peace. |

Forgive Your Parents (1) Sun, 20 Mar 2022 ‘Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.’ Ephesians 4:32 There is nothing worse than the pain some parents can inflict on their kids. Often it stems from ignorance, but that doesn’t lessen the hurt when you’re on the receiving end. Stormie Omartian writes: ‘Needs not met in childhood will be just as strong in adulthood, but they will be expertly camouflaged. If you were abused as a child, don’t be misled into [thinking]… “I’m born again—I shouldn’t still hurt.” The fact that you still hurt doesn’t negate your born-again status or make you less spiritual. Because people tend to view God the way they viewed their parents, it takes a time of healing, deliverance, and getting to know the love of God before total trust comes. Forgiving your parents is a big part of the healing (and crucial to avoiding the pitfall of abusing your own children). You have to forgive the father who never protected you, the mother who mistreated and abused you, the stepfather who didn’t love you, the grandfather or uncle who sexually molested you, the parent who was never there or deserted you… the selfish parent who reminded you that you were never wanted, or the emotionally deficient parent who didn’t know how to properly nurture you. These bitterly painful experiences will continue to hurt you if you don’t… release all that pain and bitterness… and ask [God] to help you forgive… He is a God of restoration and redemption, so He can redeem... your past. He can mend the breach between you and your children, or parents, or friends. Restoration doesn’t happen overnight, but redemption can. Allow God to redeem your situation now, so it can be turned around and headed in the right direction.’ |

Don’t Let Your Feelings Control You Fri, 18 Mar 2022 ‘Carefully guard your thoughts.’ Proverbs 4:23 When it comes to everyday living, you can walk according to the unchanging principles of God’s Word or by your constantly changing feelings. When you live by God’s Word, you have stability. When you live by feelings, it’s like riding a roller coaster; one day you’re up, the next you’re down. God wants to bring you into emotional maturity, but you have to cooperate with Him. This calls for a daily act of your will; choosing to do things His way rather than your own. And once it becomes a habit, you discover that life is more enjoyable. Now, you don’t let everyone who knocks on your door come in and make themselves at home, so why would you let every emotion that surfaces dictate the direction of your day or decide your responses? ‘Carefully guard your thoughts because they are the source of true life.’ (Proverbs 4:23 CEV) It’s your thinking that produces your feelings, not vice versa! That’s why Paul writes, ‘Capture every thought and make it… obey Christ.’ (2 Corinthians 10:5 NCV) In other words, if a thought doesn’t line up with God’s Word, don’t give it a voice or a vote. ‘We walk by faith, not by sight.’ (2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV) This may come as a surprise but you won’t always feel God’s presence. After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to two disciples on the Emmaus road, yet they didn’t recognise Him. Why? Because they were occupied with their feelings! How did He lift them out of their negative emotions? ‘He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.’ (Luke 24:27 NKJV) Bottom line: be led only by God’s Word. |

Acknowledging God’s Sovereignty Thu, 17 Mar 2022 ‘God is good.’ Romans 12:1 Paul writes, ‘God is good. So… offer your bodies to Him as a living sacrifice… Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to Him.’ (Romans 12:1–2 CEV) There are two ways to understand God’s sovereignty: (a) through His initiative, and (b) through our response. In essence, Paul is saying this: (1) Resist the pressures of a world system that pulls you in the wrong direction; (2) Renew your mind every day through prayer and reading God’s Word; (3) Recognise His will for you and live accordingly. But Paul doesn’t stop there. He writes: ‘Hate everything that is evil and hold tight to everything that is good. Love each other as brothers and sisters and honour others more than you do yourself. Never give up. Eagerly follow the Holy Spirit and serve the Lord. Let your hope make you glad. Be patient in time of trouble and never stop praying. Take care of… needy people… Ask God to bless everyone who mistreats you… When others are happy, be happy with them, and when they are sad, be sad. Be friendly with everyone. Don’t be proud and feel that you are smarter than others. Make friends with ordinary people. Don’t mistreat someone who has mistreated you. But try to earn the respect of others, and do your best to live at peace with everyone.’ (Romans 12:9–18 CEV) God’s sovereignty doesn’t release us from personal responsibility. It doesn’t mean we should lose interest in current affairs or in making informed decisions. God still expects us to strive for excellence and show concern for a lost world. Acknowledging God’s sovereignty sets you free from playing God and enables you to enjoy walking with Him. |

People With A Past (3) Wed, 16 Mar 2022 ‘When Jesus saw her, He called her to Him.’ Luke 13:12 This woman tried religion, but it couldn’t help her. She tried doctors, but they couldn’t cure her. And the people around her thought her problem would never be solved. Even she did! But not Jesus. His promise is: ‘Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will… relieve and refresh your souls.’ (Matthew 11:28 AMPC) What a relief; you can give your burden to Jesus. No matter how hard life seems, relief is just a prayer away. Regardless of the obstacles standing in your way, reach out to Jesus. You may have an out-of-wedlock infant cradled in your arms, but keep pressing towards Him. You may have been abused and molested and have never been able to tell anyone, but don’t stop reaching out for Him. You don’t have to tell everyone your whole past. Just know that Jesus is calling you. He knows your past, but He is calling you anyway. He doesn’t see you as you are but as you will be when His grace has wrought a work in your life. The Samaritan woman at the well was an outcast because of her immoral life, but she was chosen to tell many more people about Jesus (see John 4:39). Matthew, who wrote the first book of the New Testament, was a despised tax collector working for the Romans when he met Jesus. But Jesus doesn’t examine your past in order to decide what He will do with your future. Saul of Tarsus, the murderer of Christians, became Paul the Apostle, author of half the New Testament. The good news is, when Jesus saves you, you no longer have a past. You only have a future. |

People With A Past (2) Tue, 15 Mar 2022 ‘When Jesus saw her, He called her to Him.’ Luke 13:12 We don’t know how long it took this woman to get to the front of the church when Jesus called her. People who are hurting can’t always move as quickly as others. There are two important lessons for you in her story. (1) Sometimes you won’t grow and mature as fast as others because you have been struggling with a debilitating problem for a long time. What seems easy for others can be very difficult for you. But there is good news: Jesus will wait for you, and He will work with you until you overcome your problem. (2) Your testimony will come out of the tests you have been through. And no matter what you have been through, today Jesus is calling you. He is saying, ‘Get up! You can approach Me.’ Regardless of what you have done or what you have suffered, He is calling you. You may think your secret is worse than anyone else’s. Rest assured that God knows all about it. And His promise is this: ‘I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you… I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt.’ (Jeremiah 31:3–4 NKJV) Like a master sculptor creating something beautiful out of a crude piece of rock, God can turn your mess into a message of hope for others. The reason Satan has attacked you is because you have something valuable to contribute. This woman’s story ends with these words: ‘The multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by Him.’ (Luke 13:17 NKJV) God’s plan is to have people look at your life and say, ‘Something has happened to you; you’re not the same person anymore!’ |
People With A Past (1) Mon, 14 Mar 2022 ‘When Jesus saw her, He called her to Him.’ Luke 13:12 ‘There was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up. But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him and said to her, “Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.” And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.’ (Luke 13:11–13 NKJV) This woman couldn’t walk properly because she had been bound by ‘a spirit of infirmity’ for eighteen years. That’s a long time to struggle with something. And during that time, she had come to church and received no help. Then Jesus ‘called’ her to the forefront. Why didn’t He just heal her in her seat? Here are two reasons: (1) God wants us to exercise faith and act on His Word. When you live with an unsolved problem for a long time, you start thinking, ‘This will never change.’ So, before God changes your circumstances, He changes your mind and enables you to see new possibilities. This is called ‘faith’. The Bible says, ‘Without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him.’ (Hebrews 11:6 AMPC) Today God wants to see you moving towards Him. (2) God wants us to invest in our own deliverance. When you have an investment in something, you value and protect it. That way, when Satan tries to bring the problem back, you say, ‘No, I don’t receive that. That’s no longer who I am. I’m a new creation in Christ.’ |
Become A Worshipper Sun, 13 Mar 2022 ‘The true worshippers are being led by the Spirit.’ John 4:23 Let’s talk about how to become a worshipper. First of all, there is no one-size-fits-all. The Bible doesn’t say you must worship God in a certain way. That’s because worship is such a powerful outpouring of our hearts towards the Lord that it can’t be limited to words or defined by a song, a shout, or silence. Jesus said, ‘True worshippers are being led by the Spirit… These are the ones the Father is seeking to worship Him.’ (John 4:23 CEV) Second, God created you to worship Him. John the Apostle wrote, ‘You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for You created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.’ (Revelation 4:11 NIV) Nothing brings pleasure to the heart of our heavenly Father more than the love and adoration of His redeemed children. Third, worship can be expressed by anybody, anywhere, anytime. The Samaritan woman in Scripture grew up believing that true worship must be expressed at a sacred mountain called Gerizim, whereas the Jews believed it should be practised in the temple at Jerusalem. But Jesus said it wasn’t to be confined to church or a particular day of the week. The psalmist, in his inimitable style, puts it like this: ‘Servants of the Lord, praise the name of the Lord! Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its going down the Lord’s name is to be praised.’ (Psalm 113:1–3 NKJV) So, become a worshipper. |
The Pharisee And The Prostitute Sat, 12 Mar 2022 ‘All her sins are forgiven, and that is why she has shown great love.’ Luke 7:47 One day, Jesus was eating at the home of a Pharisee when a prostitute came in. ‘The woman kissed His feet and poured… perfume on them. The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this and said to himself, “If this man really were a prophet, He would know what kind of woman is touching Him!”’ (Luke 7:38–39 CEV) But Simon the Pharisee got it wrong. It wasn’t that Jesus didn’t know, it’s that He didn’t care! That day, He forgave her sin and sent her on her way redeemed, restored, and redirected. This story confirms what we already know; Jesus came to save sinners on the street and hypocrites in the church. No one is beyond the reach of His grace. With that in mind, think this way: (1) Never forget what God saved you from! Note what Jesus told Simon the Pharisee: ‘Anyone who has been forgiven for only a little will show only a little love.’ (Luke 7:47 CEV) Remembering the sins of his past, David wrote: ‘He… brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay… set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps. He has put a new song in my mouth—praise to our God; many will see it and fear, and will trust in the Lord.’ (Psalm 40:2–3 NKJV) (2) Remember that Jesus isn’t looking at your past but at your future. The crowd saw this woman as a weed, but Jesus saw her as a rose, and He watered it. Bottom line: if you need forgiveness today, come to Jesus. And if you have been forgiven, pour out your heart to Him in praise. |
Your Prayers Can Make Great Things Happen! Fri, 11 Mar 2022 ‘When a believing person prays, great things happen.’ James 5:16 While holidaying in England, DL Moody visited a London church that was spiritually dead. The pastor recognised him and asked him to preach at the morning service. Reluctantly, Moody agreed. Afterwards, he told a friend the congregation was so unresponsive it was all he could do to finish his sermon. Later, he remembered he had committed to preach there again that night. Wishing he had never interrupted his holiday plans, he spent the afternoon dreading what was ahead. But behind the scenes, something was happening that Moody knew nothing about. After the morning service, an elderly lady met her invalid sister for lunch and told her about Moody’s upcoming visit. Her sister’s eyes lit up, and she exclaimed, ‘I’ve been praying God would send Moody to England! Put away the lunch, Sis. We’ll spend the afternoon fasting and praying for tonight’s service.’ When Moody took the pulpit that night, an ‘electric’ sense of God’s presence filled the sanctuary. He preached like a man on fire and, when he issued an invitation for people to follow Christ, five hundred responded. Thinking they had misunderstood, Moody had them sit down while he re-explained the Gospel call. But when he issued a second invitation, the same five hundred stood to receive Christ. That Sunday initiated one of the greatest revivals ever to sweep England. What helped make it happen? Two elderly ladies who understood their church desperately needed the fire of God’s Spirit. They believed God’s promise, ‘When a believing person prays, great things happen.’ Today, tap into the power of prayer. Your prayers can help ignite the fire of God and make great things happen. |

What Only God Sees Thu, 10 Mar 2022 ‘Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.’ Matthew 6:18 Have you ever been to a concert where they used the latest audio-visual equipment? Chances are, you were blown away by the multidimensional sights and sounds, and afterwards, left talking about the amazing skills of the performers. If the performance went without a hitch, you probably didn’t think about the sound and lighting techs. Usually we only notice them when the equipment fails. They’re the invisible element; the people who do their job by making the star look and sound great. The real accolades go to those in the spotlight. That’s the order of things in the kingdom of man. But the Kingdom of God operates on the principle that ‘the last shall be first, and the first last.’ (Matthew 20:16 KJV) Jesus said when you fast, pray, and give without looking for recognition, ‘Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.’ On a large ship, only the captain and a handful of officers are visible on the bridge. But the crew below deck determine the ship’s progress for most of the voyage. And in God’s church, it’s the ‘engine-room crew’ who faithfully carry out much of the work: caretaking staff, nursery workers, bus drivers, car park attendants, nursing home visitors, prison outreach workers, and prayer warriors. While high-profile people tend to get most of the kudos, God reserves special recognition and rewards for the below-deck crew! And if you’re one of them, soon enough you will hear His public announcement, ‘Well done!... You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you.’ (Luke 19:17 NIV) And when that happens, everything else will pale by comparison! |
Become A Conduit Wed, 9 Mar 2022 ‘You will be blessed in every way.’ 2 Corinthians 9:11 Think how ridiculous it would be for an electric company to generate power and then hoard it. Their customers would be in the dark, and the company would be out of business in short order! The same principle applies to our finances. ‘God loves people who love to give. God can bless you with everything you need, and you will always have more than enough to do all kinds of good things for others… You will be blessed in every way, and you will be able to keep on being generous.’ (2 Corinthians 9:7–8, 11 CEV) Some people refuse to give because they’re greedy, but in most instances, that’s not so. The truth is, we’re concerned that if we don’t look out for our own interests, they might not get looked out for at all. But that kind of thinking doesn’t make sense. That’s like a farmer refusing to plant his next harvest because he is afraid to let go of his seeds. The Bible says, ‘Honour the Lord by giving Him your money and the first part of all your crops.’ (Proverbs 3:9 CEV) Is that because He is poor and He needs it? No! He wants us to sow into His Kingdom so that: (1) His work and His will can be done on the earth, and (2) you will have a harvest when you need it. Jesus said when you ‘put God’s work first and do what He wants… the other things will be yours as well.’ (Matthew 6:33 CEV) When you become a conduit for God’s Kingdom, ‘you will be blessed in every way.’ In fact, when you consider your finances from a Biblical perspective, the thing to fear isn’t giving away too much—it’s sowing too little! |
