Trust God’s Timing (2)

Thu, 26 Dec 2019

‘What I have said, that I will bring about.’ Isaiah 46:11 NIV

God has a plan for your life that requires certain things to happen at a particular time. And since He sees the big picture and you’re working with limited information, it’s wise to trust Him—even when you don’t see how it will all come together. God can take the loss of a relationship or a job and make it work for your good. The trouble is, while He’s doing all this, you can feel uncomfortable and downright miserable.

Nearly eight hundred years before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Micah said that He would be born in Bethlehem (see Micah 5:2). But Mary and Joseph were living in Nazareth. So how did God solve the problem?

The Roman emperor Augustus decreed that a census should be taken: ‘All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He travelled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, his fiancée, who was now obviously pregnant. And while they were there, the time came for her baby to be born. She gave birth to her first child, a son.’ (Luke 2:3–7 NLT)

Are you worried about the future? ‘Don’t be impatient for the Lord to act! Keep travelling steadily along His pathway and in due season He will honour you with every blessing.’ (Psalm 37:34 TLB)

Relax: the God who arranged for His Son to be born into the right family, at the right time, in the right place, is looking out for you today

Christmas symbols

Tue, 24 Dec 2019

‘In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.’ Ephesians 1:7 NKJV

Today, some people are trying to remove any public mention of Christ at Christmas, while others seem bent on secularising it completely. So let’s look at the meaning of some of the Christmas symbols.

Small holly berries are thought to have originally reminded Christians of the drops of Christ’s blood caused by the crown of thorns He wore on Calvary. Evergreen trees speak of the promise of never-ending life resulting from His resurrection. When early Christians changed the Roman winter solstice of the rebirth of the sun (originally on December 21), to a celebration of the birth of the ‘Son of Righteousness’, the evergreen wreath was adopted. Instead of simply being a garland, the round Christmas wreath now speaks of the never-ending unity and fellowship we have with God through Christ. So if you hang a wreath on your door or over your fireplace this Christmas, remind yourself that nothing ‘shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ (Romans 8:39 NKJV)

But it’s pagan, you might say! Or just ‘traditional’! The fact is that Jesus Himself took the traditional and pagan of His time and transformed its meaning. Hanukkah—the Festival of Lights—is not one of the feasts commanded by God. It was (and is) a human tradition celebrating a great military victory. Yet it was at Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, that Jesus said, ‘I am the Light of the World,’ restoring a name associated with the pagan god Mithras to both Himself and to the Father.

Jesus didn’t avoid the pagan and traditional, but used it to point to Himself. So why can’t we do the same?

Are You At Your Breaking Point?

Mon, 23 Dec 2019

‘I would have lost heart, unless I had believed.’ Psalm 27:13 NKJV

David was a giant killer, a psalm writer, and Israel’s most popular king. But when the stresses of life brought him to his breaking point, he wrote, ‘I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.’

Are you at your breaking point today? When you get to that place, one of two things happens: you either break down or break through! It all depends on what you do. David experienced a breakthrough because he knew the right formula: ‘Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.’ (Psalm 27:14 NKJV)

There’s an old saying—‘The same sun that melts the butter hardens the clay.’ When trouble comes, you can turn against God because you’ve served Him faithfully and don’t understand why He’s permitting you to go through such a hard time, or you can turn to Him for the answer! Nothing catches Him off guard, and nothing is too hard for Him.

He said, ‘I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done, saying, “My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure.”’ (Isaiah 46:9–10 NKJV) You may be in a state of shock right now—but God isn’t. Your circumstances can actually become a platform for Him to demonstrate His unfailing love and care for you. So don’t lose heart; He’s going to bring you through this storm and bring glory to His name in the process.

Undercover Boss

Sun, 22 Dec 2019

‘I sat among them for seven days.’ Ezekiel 3:15 NIV

Remember the reality tv show Undercover Boss? In it, the company owner goes undercover disguised as a regular staff member, and works alongside the other employees. He or she gets to experience their daily pressures and problems, becomes familiar with their strengths and weaknesses, and finds out what is and isn’t working. Some of the discoveries are truly eye-opening, and lead to major changes that end up making the organisation a more efficient, more profitable, and a more enjoyable place for everyone to work.

A good definition of the word understand is ‘to stand in another person’s shoes’. That’s what happened to the prophet Ezekiel. He writes: ‘Then I came to the colony of Judean exiles… I was overwhelmed and sat among them for seven days. After seven days the Lord gave me a message. He said, “Son of man, I have appointed you as a watchman.”’ (Ezekiel 3:15–17 NLT) When did God give Ezekiel a message for others? After he’d spent seven days and nights sitting with people who had lost everything, people in deep despair and in need of answers.

Referring to Jesus, the Bible tells us, ‘This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do.’ (Hebrews 4:15 NLT) Your most effective ministry to others can come out of some of the experiences you’re going through right now, especially the painful ones you’d like to escape and don’t even feel comfortable talking about. The truth is, your greatest mess can turn out to be your greatest message. So let God work on you until He gets you to where you need to be.

The Law of Location

Sat, 21 Dec 2019

‘God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it.’ Genesis 2:15 NIV

God created the Garden of Eden, placed Adam in it, and told him to ‘work it’. God said, ‘Be fruitful and multiply.’ (Genesis 1:22 NKJV) In other words, ‘Be successful.’

But notice, there’s a definite sequence. First: God prepares a place for you. Second: He puts you in it. Third: He tells you to ‘work it’. Fourth: He says, ‘I want you to succeed.’ This is called ‘the law of location’. You only flourish in the place where you belong, doing what God has called and equipped you to do. And you’ll have to work at it, so don’t expect it to be quick and easy. The law of location is evident throughout the Scriptures.

After his life-changing encounter with God, we read, ‘Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”’ (Genesis 32:30 NIV) That’s when God changed his name from Jacob, which means ‘deceiver’, to Israel, which means ‘a prince with God’.

God spoke to the prophet Elijah in the middle of a famine and said, ‘Go at once to Zarephath…I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.’ (1 Kings 17:9 NIV)

Eden was the place of fruitfulness.

Peniel was the place of radical change.

Zarephath was the place of divine supply.

Question: are you in the place God wants you to be? If you’re not sure, talk to Him today. ‘I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you by the way you should go.’ (Isaiah 48:17 NKJV)

Hate Speech Bill: You have no business in government if you’re afraid of criticisms – Alaafin tackles NASS

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi 111, on Thursday, berated the National Assembly over the re-introduction of the anti-hate speech bill by the Senate.

DAILY POST recalls that anti-hate speech bill, which seeks to regulate and punish people who make unguarded statements was recently re-introduced by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi.

But, the monarch, while speaking at a book presentation and platinum recognition as parts of activities marking the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Tribune titles, insisted that anyone who doesn’t want to be criticised has no business in government.

Oba Adeyemi spoke at the event attended by former Chief of Army Staff, General Theophilus Danjuma, foremost Afenifere leader, Chief Rueben Fasoranti, foremost Legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola, former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbega Daniel, former Secretary to Oyo state Government, Chief Michael Koleosho and Group Managing Director of Odu’a Investment Company Limited, Mr. Adewale Raji.

Others at the event were; the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Professor Olu Akinkugbe, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, daughters of the Premier of defunct Western region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo; Mrs. Tola Oyediran and Dr. Adetokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu Editor in Chief of Nigerian Tribune, Mr. Edward Dickson.

The monarch, while addressing the gathering, challenged lawyers and other professionals not to allow the bill to sail through, saying death penalty should not be the punishment for abuse.

He said, “Gradually to an offence of hate speech that attracts penalty of death. If I have not killed anyone; and I give an opinion that is contrary to the government’s, will it be a sufficient reason for me to be charged for death penalty? Where are the lawyers in Nigeria? Constitutional lawyers in Nigeria, where are they? Can’t they speak up? Chief Olowu, you are here.

“Nobody is speaking up. If you don’t want to be criticised, then you don’t have to be in government. My friend Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe has a peculiar character and I wish he could continue to learn about the Constitutional lesson from Chief Obafemi Awolowo in his reply to Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. We have quotation and quotations from this literate man. I have read almost all his books, published. They are in my library. I can go on and on citing instances. During the Constitutional conferences that held in the 50s at Lancaster House, three giants from the country postulated different approaches to the Nigerian Independence. Sir Ahmadu Bello said North is for Northerners; East for Easterners and West for the Westerners. Azikiwe said, there should be one Constitution, one Country, one destiny.

“Awolowo rose up and said No! We are not talking about the Constitution that will be suitable for Nigeria. But what is suitable for Nigeria is when you have a multi lingual, multi national and multi religious country with diverse races. That before independence the whole school we had on ground was 123 for the whole of the North while the South had 5,000 schools. There is no way. That illiterate will continue to govern the literate people. It cannot work and it will not work.

“Awolowo projected what will be the question of North East, North Central. That of you don’t educate the people, the Almanjiri will become bandits. Today, in Zamfara and Yobe, the governments are now subjected to banditry. And they are exchanging these bandits, giving them money. How can government give bandits money?

“That is a collapse of governance and government. If you are a student of Constitution, you must believe Awolowo’s views. Well, I am not a politician but I understand politics. I don’t do partisan politics because I want to be progressive. In the whole of Nigeria when Awolowo started his free primary education, we felt it would not work. He started it. Two to three years after he started it, he appointed Taiwo to head for the review of the proposal and he came out with the position that in the next 30 to 40 years, the Western Region will be 60 years ahead of other areas in education.

“And that demography, of you study people like Professor Akinkugbe, who were their doctors, surgeons, they produced a sector of Obafemi Awolowo University by the Action Group government in 1963-64. If you pass out of primary school, you go to Teacher Training College and if you pass out, you would be given automatic admission to University. That was the reason they established the University of Ife.

“Then we had Agent General United Kingdom catering for the welfare of Western Nigerian students. They go to the school and when they returned, they had jobs already waiting for them. Now our graduates are roaming about the streets. There is no index of people who are out of school. Just three days ago, Governor Ganduje said that Kano has the largest number of out of school children.

“How can we have stability in the country when half of the country are governed by illiterates? When banditry has taken over the governance? Surely there cannot be peace in the country. And tell me, Editors are here. When you said you have technically defeated Boko Haram, what is the technicality in defeat?

“Either we agree we have not been able to subdue them and admit it. Now, they are quoting United Nations figures for us. And our government is telling them we are not under America or UK but we are going there to loan money from them. Surely, something must be done to take a queue from this man.

“If he is not an angel, then he must be in the right side of God. We must be able to support this newspaper. It is a paper of courage; a newspaper that was set up for equity, justice and fair play.”

Distributors of God’s Blessing

Fri, 20 Dec 2019

‘I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.’ Genesis 12:2 NIV

God promised to bless Abraham and make his name ‘great’ for one reason—so he would be a blessing to others. Jesus taught His disciples to be distributors of blessing and first responders to those in need. That’s why He often involved them in the miracle process; He was training them. In feeding the five thousand, the miracle of multiplication took place after the bread and fish left the disciples’ hands. Jesus was the source, they were the distributors (see Matthew 14:13–21).

And God is calling you to be a distributor too. Sometimes we don’t recognise our blessing because it’s in seed form, so we conclude we don’t have what it takes. Not so. Jesus said: ‘This is what the Kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.’ (Mark 4:26–29 NIV)

Note the words: ‘The seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.’ Instead of saying, ‘How could God possibly use me?’ become aware and alert to people’s needs. You have something God can use, and when He blesses it, you’ll be amazed at your potential. The miracle of the loaves and fishes began when someone said, ‘These people need to be fed.’ That’s when the disciples discovered Jesus could use what they had, even though it seemed inadequate.

Great Doors/Great Challenges

Thu, 19 Dec 2019

‘A great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.’ 1 Corinthians 16:9 NIV

Nothing becomes truly great until it overcomes something that looks insurmountable. Paul writes, ‘I will stay on at Ephesus until Pentecost, because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me.’ (1 Corinthians 16:8–9 NIV) Great doors of opportunity always come with great challenges, and each challenge calls for greater faith and tenacity. Think about it: if outstanding success came easily, everyone would have it. And if everyone had it, it wouldn’t be outstanding success.

How does a caterpillar become a butterfly? By overcoming the cocoon. And the cocoon is so essential to the process that the caterpillar actually creates it. Wouldn’t it be easier just to stay in the warmth and comfort of the cocoon? On days when the caterpillar struggles to get out of it, he probably thinks so! But deep down, he knows the price of freedom. Flight and discovery require struggle, development, and breakthrough. There is no other way!

Why did Jesus send His disciples into a life-threatening storm? To teach them to trust Him in all of life’s situations. Soon He’d be leaving them, and He was using every experience to prepare them for their future. So what are you struggling to overcome right now? Instead of complaining and asking God to take it away, see it for what it is—preparation. Remember, your level of preparation indicates the level of blessing that awaits you on the other side of it. So if God is opening doors of opportunity for you, be prepared for challenges, because you can’t have one without the other.

Challenges for the Church of Today

Wed, 18 Dec 2019

‘God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display His wisdom in its rich variety.’ Ephesians 3:10 NLT

Here are three of the challenges the church faces today:

(1) We can’t experience a new move of God if we insist on clinging to an old one. ‘God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display His wisdom in its rich variety.’ The word revival doesn’t simply mean awakening something that’s asleep. It also means resurrecting that which is dead or dying, and causing it to come to life again.

(2) We fear excess, so we embrace mediocrity and call it balance. People aren’t drawn to us because of our similarities, but because of the things that make us unique. When it comes to our faith and our testimony, we mustn’t downplay, soft-pedal, or sidestep the very things God has given us that make us distinctive. If we do, people will be disappointed and go elsewhere. The disciples didn’t blend in with the crowd; their message and the demonstration of its power made them stand out.

(3) We need to make room in the church for risk-takers and faith-walkers. In the first miracle Jesus worked, changing water into wine, Mary told the servants, ‘Do whatever He tells you.’ (John 2:5 NIV) Our need to be liked and to be popular can lead to a religious spirit that cripples risk-taking and faith-walking. Jesus promised: ‘You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses.’ (Acts 1:8 NIV) So when God tells us to ‘do church’ differently, let’s not be afraid to step out and obey Him.
Nairaland General › How To Set Your Goals (6) by Btruth(op): 7:30am On Dec 17, 2019
How To Set Your Goals (6)

Tue, 17 Dec 2019

‘Write down the revelation and make it plain.’ Habakkuk 2:2 NIV

Put your goals in writing. God told the prophet Habakkuk, ‘Write down the revelation and make it plain…so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time…Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.’ (Habakkuk 2:2–3 NIV)

Note the word ‘delay’, because it’s not one we particularly like. God can give you a vision overnight, but usually it won’t be fulfilled overnight. You’ll face disappointments, discouragements, and delays. Because your vision always costs more than you estimated, and takes longer than you planned, it can become ‘blurred’ by your circumstances and emotions. That’s why it’s so important to write it down and keep it in front of you! Why did God tell Abraham that his children would be as numerous as the stars in heaven? Because stars are something you can physically look at and count. ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish [languish and waste away].’ (Proverbs 29:18 KJV)

The word ‘perish’ suggests something that’s slowly decaying, and that’s what happens when you don’t keep your God-given vision in front of you. If you’ve dreamed of losing weight, post a picture that inspires you on your refrigerator. If you dream of one day owning your own home, stick a picture of it on your message board. And if your goal is to give a certain amount to God’s work, write a cheque for that amount and place it where you’ll see it every day. With a clear-cut written goal, you’ll always know where you are and remember what God has called you to do.
