Strive For Intimacy In Your Marriage Sat, 27 Jul 2019 ‘Arise, my love, my beautiful one, and come away.’ Song of Solomon 2:10 ESV The Bible teaches us that the basis for a good marriage isn’t just sharing the same bed every night, but the same values and goals every day. Without those, it will be like talking to each other in a foreign language. Now, you won’t always agree, and you must accept that. But if you want to reach the same destination you’ve got to follow the same road map. Like building a house, you need to work from an agreed-upon set of blueprints. After a while you discover that physical intimacy alone isn’t enough. That might get you through the night, but it takes genuine friendship and shared faith in God to get you through the years. We’re talking about husbands and wives who communicate without saying a word because the same purposes and principles govern their lives. And when problems arise, as they invariably do, they seek solutions from the same source—God. When life fell apart for Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they came before God together because they had both had a relationship with Him. After all, how can you correct the problem if one of you doesn’t think there is a problem? True intimacy comes when the sex is over and the commitment is stronger than ever. It allows you to be with someone without always needing to impress them. One author puts it like this: ‘When we know we’re loved because of who we are, we become healthier in mind and more intimate in expression. We’re freed from the fear of rejection and loosed from the anxiety of having to perform.’ |

Steps To Getting Well Fri, 26 Jul 2019 ‘Do you want to get well?’ John 5:6 NIV Jesus asked a sick man an unusual question: ‘Do you want to get well?’ For thirty-eight years this man’s condition had immobilised him, bought him the sympathy of others, and perhaps given him a reason to say, ‘I’m not responsible.’ But all of us are responsible for two things: our attitudes and our choices. The fact is we’ve all been hurt in some way. But if you’re still focused on it twenty years later you’re not a victim by circumstance, but by choice. What exactly is a victim by choice? Someone who thinks negative attention is better than no attention at all! Jesus said, ‘If you are angry with someone, forgive him so that your Father in Heaven will also forgive your sins.’ (Mark 11:25 NCV) Those words presuppose someone has hurt you. They also hold you responsible for your reaction to that person. Jesus taught that if you don’t forgive, you can’t receive forgiveness yourself when you need it. Whatever others may have taken from you in the past, if you remain bitter they’ll take more from you in the future. Maybe you’re thinking, ‘If only they’d come back and ask for forgiveness.’ Is that what you’re waiting for? Don’t waste your time! The key to happiness is in your hands, not theirs. And that key is forgiveness. Are you waiting for someone to say, ‘I forgive you’ before you can forgive yourself? What if they never do? Here’s the formula for freedom: (1) Apologise if you need to. (2) Make amends if you can. (3) Forgive yourself. (4) Move on. Do you want to get well? These are the steps. |

Answer These Two Questions Thu, 25 Jul 2019 ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.’ Romans 15:13 NIV First, how is your relationship with God right now? Do you doubt His promises, His call on your life, your ability to hear from Him, His pleasure in you, or whether you can do enough to keep Him happy? If so, this Scripture is custom-designed for you: ‘May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him.’ Notice, when you stop trusting God and start trusting in your own efforts, you lose your joy and peace. Have you lost yours today? If you want them back, you must get out of doubt and back into faith! Second, how is your relationship with yourself right now? Joyce Meyer wrote: ‘For years the only relationship I had with myself was one of doubt. I doubted my decisions, my appearance, whether I was saying or doing the right thing… whether I was in any way pleasing God, or anybody else. I knew I wasn’t pleased with myself, so how could God or anybody else be pleased with me? Those years of misery are behind me, because now I know God’s grace covers me like a blanket. I know it’s through Jesus alone that I’m made righteous and acceptable to God. What a joy! I was so bound by legalistic religion that I’ll always have to be on guard against it. But now I know how to recognise its symptoms.’ Paul writes, ‘Stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery [which you have once put off].’ (Galatians 5:1 AMPC) Stop doubting your salvation, or yourself, or God! |

The Blessing Comes By ‘Doing’ Wed, 24 Jul 2019 ‘I do Your commandments.’ Psalm 119:166 NKJV In his book Traveling Hopefully, Stan Mooneyham writes: ‘I will go, when—I will give, after—I will obey, but first—one can always find reasons for delay, and sometimes they may even seem to be valid reasons. A close friend of mine and I were called to preach about the same time, and we went to university together. I was out mutilating homiletics in rural Oklahoma churches during those four years of study, but my friend insisted he wouldn’t preach his first sermon until he had received his PhD. That was over thirty years ago. I am still mutilating homiletics, but my friend isn’t preaching at all. He never did. Preparation is important, but doing is a vitally important part of preparation. In the Old Testament we hear much about offerings of “first fruits”. God’s portion came right off the top. Nowadays we are more likely to be known by and for our “last fruits”. Near the hold button on the hotline to Heaven, these classic words would be appropriate: “If not I, who? If not here, where? If not now, when?” Are you waiting for the “perfect moment” to come before you step out in faith and obey what God has told you to do? Obey God. Now! It’s not enough to say you believe God’s Word, you must obey it. It’s not enough to accumulate Bible knowledge, you must apply the knowledge God has given you to your daily living.’ James writes, ‘Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves …a doer…will be blessed in what he does.’ (James 1:22–25 NKJV) The blessing comes by ‘doing’. |
A Truly Challenging Commandment Tue, 23 Jul 2019 ‘This is My commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.’ John 15:12 NLT Jesus said, ‘I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!’ (John 15:11 NLT) What are these ‘things’ that you must do to have His joy in life? Jesus tells us in the next verse: ‘This is My commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.’ You say, ‘That’s a truly challenging commandment!’ Yes, and you’ll have to do a lot of growing and maturing in order to keep it. But to enjoy the life Jesus wants you to have, you must commit yourself to doing it! God created all kinds of people with different temperaments and personalities, so clearly He loves variety. When God made the first person He said, ‘It was good.’ Not only are there varieties of people, but there’s ‘good’ in everybody and you’re supposed to look for it. Much of our unhappiness in life is caused by people not being what we want them to be or doing what we want them to do. What’s the answer? How can you enjoy each day if you’re going to have to deal with annoying people? By making up your mind to love them. You don’t have to like their ways, but you have to love them in spite of their ways. But when you think about it, that’s how God treats you, right? Here’s a key to loving annoying people: annoying people are usually annoyed about something in their life. When you treat the source of their pain, they’ll begin to feel better and treat you better. |
Reasons To Be Thankful Mon, 22 Jul 2019 ‘In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.’ 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV Gratitude doesn’t come naturally to us, but grumbling does. No one had more cause to grumble than Joseph. Abandoned, enslaved, betrayed, and estranged. Those are the chapter titles for his life story. Yet when he talks about it you won’t hear a tinge of bitterness. Instead, you’ll hear the opposite. In naming his two sons, he makes them living, breathing, lifelong testimonies of his gratitude to God. ‘Joseph named his older son Manasseh, for he said, “God has made me forget all my troubles and everyone in my father’s family.” Joseph named his second son Ephraim, for he said, “God has made me fruitful in this land of my grief.”’ (Genesis 41:51–52 NLT) Notice two things. First, Joseph looked at the past and gave God thanks for what He had brought him through. And you need to do that too. Whether it’s stuff others did to you, or stuff you did to them, God’s grace brought you through it. There’s only one good reason to bring up the past, and that’s to remember how God guided, protected, and blessed you in it. Second, Joseph looked at the present. ‘God has made me fruitful in this land of my grief.’ Do you remember a time when you thought you wouldn’t make it? And when others thought you wouldn’t make it, too? Look what the Lord has done in your life! In spite of the obstacles and the opposition He has blessed and taken care of you. Turn off the complaining tap and turn on the thanksgiving tap. ‘In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you |

Through The Wilderness Sun, 21 Jul 2019 ‘The people of Israel came to the wilderness.’ Exodus 16:1 ESV The Israelites discovered that for them, the way into the Promised Land was through the wilderness. This is God’s furnace of refinement. To survive in the desert, we have to follow His lead, stand firm in faith and lean into Him for daily manna. As we cast our cares on Him—because, frankly, there’s nowhere else to turn, the stumbling blocks which keep us from a deeper relationship with Him will begin to crumble to dust. Our self-sufficiency as well as our pride in ourselves and our own achievements start to be stripped away. The wilderness is a silent place. No distractions. No signposts to the nearest oasis. No cellphone coverage to point you to the closest road. That means God can finally get your attention—sometimes He’ll want to talk about besetting sin, sometimes about the calling He’s placed on your life, sometimes about a gift He’s given you that you’ve overlooked. And once you’re listening to God, you start to realise He’s the only way out of the wilderness as well as the only door into your calling. The wilderness is the place where we learn dependence on God. We learn to trust Him, to rely on Him and to exercise faith in Him. So, if you’re going through a wilderness experience, don’t think God is punishing you or that He has forsaken you. He’s just allowing some things to die so that other things can be born in you and grow into fruitfulness. Be encouraged; you will come through this! By God’s grace you’ll get to your destination. The truth is, the only way to reach the destination God has planned for you is through the wilderness. |
Stay Focused (2) Sat, 20 Jul 2019 ‘I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.’ Nehemiah 6:3 NIV When it came to rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, Nehemiah discovered that not everyone around him wanted him to succeed. To stop the work, his enemies used two things—threats and rumours. Nevertheless he rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem in less than two months. How did he do it? He stayed focused on what mattered and refused to be distracted. ‘They were scheming to harm me; so I sent messengers to them with this reply: “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?” Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.’ (Nehemiah 6:2–4 NIV) In the language of today, they emailed him. They tagged him in tweets. They left messages on his mobile phone. Over and over they tried to distract and detour him with dialogue. But he refused to fight. His voicemail greeting would have sounded something like this: ‘You have reached the home of Nehemiah. I’m not here. I’m carrying on a great project right now. If this is Sanballat, Tobiah, or Geshem, you’re wasting your time. If it’s anybody else, please leave a message after the beep.’ When you decide what your life’s priorities are, they will help you decide everything else. They will help you keep your eye on the ball. When life seems to be against you, ask yourself, ‘What are my biggest priorities for this day? For this week?’ Settle those in your mind and be laser-beam focused on them as you pursue the assignment God has given you. |

Stay Focused (1) Fri, 19 Jul 2019 ‘Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.’ Proverbs 4:25 NIV Years ago an airliner crashed into the Florida Everglades. On its approach to the Miami airport, the light indicator for proper deployment of the landing gear failed. They flew circles over the swamps of the Everglades while the cockpit crew checked to see if the gear truly had not deployed, or if the bulb in the signal light was defective. When the flight engineer tried to remove the signal light assembly it wouldn’t budge, so the other members of the crew joined in and tried to help him. As they struggled with the light assembly, none of them noticed that the aircraft was losing altitude. As a result the plane flew right into the swamp, killing 101 people on board. All was lost because the crew fiddled with a cheap light bulb and took their eyes off what mattered most. In life you’ll be tempted to choose what seems urgent over what seems important. As you try to keep your eye on the ball, this dilemma will constantly threaten your focus: ‘How do I choose what is best over what is merely good? Or the long-term perspective over the short-term one?’ You must not lose focus; your task is too important. Solomon bottom-lines it: ‘Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left.’ (Proverbs 4:25–27 NIV) |

THE PROBLEM WITH US NORTHERNERS BY NA-ALLAH MUHAMMED ZAGGA The Yoruba Council of Elders is right that Nigeria's biggest security problems are concentrated in the North and these problems are draining the country's resources. Are the Boko Haram terrorists not Northerners, mainly from the Northeast? Is religious violence not concentrated in the North? Are Muslim fanatics that attack Churches and loot Igbo shops in the name peaceful protests not Northerners? Are these mobs that extra-judicially lynch non-Muslims for alleged blasphemy not Northerners? Do Yoruba Muslims take the laws into their own hands by lynching others for alleged blasphemy? Don't the Southwest have Muslims? Why are they not behaving violently in the name of religion? Why is religious extremism and violence concentrated in the North? Are the violent Fulani bandits not Northerners? If you argue that the violent herdsmen are foreigners, then why are foreigners claiming right to grazing land in Benue State by violent means, which led to introduction of anti grazing laws? Are the notorious ethnic militias that murder children and pregnant women not Northerners? While the Niger Delta leaders have always played active roles in the achievement of peace by talking their youths out of violence, why have the Borno Elders, the ACF, the Northern Elders Forum and others failed to play any effective role in ending the violence that engulfs the North? These Northern groups are more active in terms of calling for the return of political power to the North and retaining power than in ending the violence for which the region become notorious. In May 2014, when former President Jonathan offered amnesty to the Boko Haram terrorists, what efforts did these Northern leaders make to give the initiative a fillip? Virtually nothing. Instead, they were accusing Jonathan of being behind Boko Haram to "depopulate" the North for the so-called political advantage. When the late President Umaru Musa Yar'adua offered amnesty to the Niger Delta militants, the leaders of oil producing region had proved their relevance and influence by persuading their youths out the violent agitations. Not only that, they also persuaded their boys to lay down their arms and they did and peace returned to the region. Instead of giving Jonathan's amnesty offer for Boko Haram a push, Northern leaders were living in denial about the reality of the terror group being a Northern problem, despite the fact that Kanuri boys dominate the membership of the gangs of mass murderers. In fact, some even ridiculously believed that it was a CAN agenda to destroy or eliminate Muslims, despite the fact that Boko Haram suicide bombers were targeting Churches almost every week or day. The so-called Borno Elders were busy playing politics with the issue while the monster was getting stronger and crueller. The problem with us Northerners is that we don't want to acknowledge the reality of the problem on our hands. We always look for excuses to comfort ourselves, from religious fundamentalism, violent extremism and the menace of the herdsmen. Instead taking a stand against these evil realities. If you say herdsmen are not Nigerians, why should foreigners claim a right to land in Benue State or anywhere else, and kill farmers that resist their encroachment? There are Fulanis in Mali, Chad, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Niger Republic and other parts of Africa. Why are not engaged in the massacre of the people in those places? If they are obeying the law elsewhere, why are they behaving with impunity in Nigeria? We should not allow murderers to ruin our peace and peaceful coexistence because of ethnic, cultural, and linguistic affinity. Nobody will come from another place to solve these problems for us. It is our baby, we must deal with it, it is time for action. It is time Northerners spoke with one voice over these evils that have blighted the progress of Northern Nigeria, a region that ranks lowest on the ladder of the development index. |

Hard work and integrity Thu, 18 Jul 2019 ‘A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies has no sense.’ Proverbs 12:11 NLT In The Finishing Touch, Chuck Swindoll tells about a man he met who made a great impression on him: ‘With a grin and a twinkle, he whipped out his hand. It was a hand you could strike a match on, toughened by decades of rugged toil. “You look like a man who enjoys life. What do you do for a living?” I asked. “Me? Well, I’m a farmer from back in the Midwest.” Swindoll asked him, “What did you do last week?” He said, “Last week I finished harvesting ninety thousand bushels of corn.” I then blurted out, “Ninety thousand! How old are you, my friend?” He didn’t seem at all hesitant or embarrassed by my question. “I’m just a couple of months shy of ninety.” He laughed again as I shook my head. He had lived through four wars, the Great Depression, sixteen presidents, ninety Midwest winters, who knows how many personal hardships, and he was still taking life by the throat. I had to ask him the secret of his long and productive life. “Hard work and integrity” was his quick reply. As we parted company he looked back over his shoulder and added, “Don’t take it easy, young feller. Stay at it!” Hard work and integrity! Those two qualities go together, and are the essence of a life well-lived. And when you practise them faithfully, you experience the highest level of joy and fulfilment in life.’ The Bible puts it this way: ‘A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person who chases fantasies has no sense.’ |
