like I said before if you believe you need certificate to "boost" yourself it means you are not good enough. Good software engineers show projects and experience not certificate, if I own a company I will be more interested in your skills not the certificates you have, any company that's wow'ed by your certificate is a "baby company" big companies are more interested in your skills. I'm not saying certificate won't get you job but when you place someone that has certificates with another person who is a dropout but has portfolios, the dropout wins any day any time, go on twitter and see what dropouts are building.

Lol. It's very clear that you haven't worked in any corporate environment before and don't know what office politics is. You are probably one of those guys that read a book on programming did some few small projects for some people and started feeling fly. You probably cannot build a fully functional distributed system on your own or provision networking components remotely which are the things I worked on before even leaving Nigeria.

One of the open source projects I am being paid for right now is run by a senior software solutions architect at a very famous multinational in Germany. The only reason I got the job is because of my education and skills and because he finished his masters from my school 2 years ago. And this guy was already a highly skilled Eclipse framework developer with years of skills and commitment under his belt. If you had had to develop on Eclipse there's no way you won't have heard of the guy. When I asked him why he felt the need to complete a master degree in my school, considering what I already know about him, he told me he needed it to further his career. Lol. That's a German citizen in Germany with years of experience. There are a few in my other departments in my school working and doing their masters too. They are all also IT guys.

To give another example, I have built and commited to the Flutter SDK repository a few times. One of the guys that actually started the Flutter community was on Twitter begging for jobs a few weeks ago. This is a guy with years of experience and commits under his name. He still couldn't get someone to hire him. So he had to cry out. That's because he was still a mobile developer while most of his mates had transitioned into management by studying and certificates mostly MBAs.

Certificates are one of the first things they will look out for in your CV. It shows commitment and time investment. It helps you get your foot in the door for interviews and demonstrates that at least you are likely to have some of the skills you claim to have. In IT today AWS certification counts a lot. People pay money to have it. If it's as unimportant as you claim then it won't be so popular. Portfolios are also good. But nobody has argued against having portfolios here. I have one too. I am talking about long term career mobility.

I usually don't comment on German study threads and I probably won't comment again for a long while but something brought me here and I feel someone needs to hear this.

I am just laughing at you here. Dude I had 5 years experience before I left Nigeria. So compared to me you probably don't even know what you are talking about when it comes to knowing the importance of having skills in IT or otherwise. Believe you me.

The story you shared about Fast.ai deals with someone who went for PhD. Who doesn't know that getting a PhD is just a form of apprenticeship for a life in research and academia? But I bet the person wasn't making the same arguments about masters. If you want to work in industry you probably don't need a PhD. So she was just regretting that earlier career choice.

The beauty of having an education especially at masters level in a system that works like most Western democracies are not just the education or the certificates. Also consider the sort of networking opportunities it opens you up to. Some of the people you meet in an educational environment today will be a big payoff tomorrow. Those guys will be tomorrow's managers and politicians in those countries. These are the sort of networking money can't buy. The sort of connection people click randomly on LinkedIn to have.

Some companies have even blossomed from school work projects and friendships. Some of the projects you work on in school will become career-makers. These are just the facts.

You are sounding very pained for nothing. Dude, computer science is beyond front end. Far far beyond it. You want to compare yourself with the people building the OS or the compilers? The guys writing the networking code for cloud computing; the VMs, containers, orchestration technology and other stuff that makes the system run? Those have that harder problems to solve? Lol. Your friend may not be a front-end guy. But if he is a serious person he would have more grasp of the fundamentals of computer science than you ever will. Don't let anyone catch you talking like computer science and IT is only about programming. Or that front end web dev makes you the sh!t. You have been warned. Lol

You can lie to yourself all you want but a guy with masters and the skills you have will end up being considered before you 9 times out of 10. Going to school is the first sign recruiters and companies check for your ability to commit yourself. And it's the same in Germany. For every 1 guy without the education that makes it in tech in places like Google and Facebook, there are 20 guys with the education too.

One more question. How long do you think you can push a front-end web dev career? By your mid to late 30s I doubt most companies will still want to hire you. They will all mostly be looking for younger guys without so much experience than can still do the work and get paid for less. You need to build a career in a skill set that becomes more desirable as you age and your experience begins to count more. So the fundamentals and your education begins to count even more then.

Like I said to the other guy: longer term plans Vs short term comfort. Make your decision.

Please calm down, you are just being self righteous here.. You didn't read the guy's post where he said he is not interested in pursuing a degree again?... Pray you don't find yourself in some tight situations most people that quit studies like that found themselves in... My friend use to say it is always a smooth drive, free from accident when you drive a vehicle by just describing how you would navigate by mouth...... And don't bring visa issue into this, Nigerians are not the only citizens who quit studies for jobs and moreover if the job is not good enough to acquire a resident permit, the German government will not issue the permit....

Moreover, German companies and industries are not looking for big degree holders, they are looking for people who can deliver on the job......Companies don't hire degrees, they hire and pay for skills; the world has moved away from that degree acquisition and accumulation system that you believe in , if you have the skills for that "higher paying" job you talked about (don't know what you mean by that anyway) they will give you the job , degree or no degree; especially with the recent law that was passed.

My friend who graduated about a year ago after Msc in Germany just got a job recently with salary of about 43k euros while I know an IT guy that dropped out earlier from the same Msc program immediately he got a job of about 65k euros (he doesn't have masters o, only Bsc from Nigeria with IT skills)....Please do more research and reevaluate your stance so you don't condemn people unnecessarily, the world is changing and in the nearest future Msc and Phd will no longer represent what they represent now in the minds of many...

You think your friend who is making 65k before tax will be able to compete in the future with someone with masters and with the skills? How much will the 65k be after tax and other deductions? In a few years time who do you think will have more mobility in the career? Your friend who dropped out of school or some Indian who actually finished his masters in a German school and got a job?

What I see here is the general Nigerian need for short term comfort and not long-term thinking. After 1 year in the job your friend probably start wishing he had done the masters and fast tracked his career too. IT work is no joke. I mean real IT work not just being stuck in a front-end role creating web pages for years that most of you think is all what IT is about. If you don't have the perseverance to see a master's degree to completion you probably aren't cut out for it.

Sometimes it's just not about the present situation. I have friends that did what you are advising a few years back and I have friends that did otherwise. I know the difference career wise today.

Finally all you said doesn't take anything away from the fact that Student Visas are getting harder and harder by the day. Simply because Nigerians are one of the highest truants in Germany.

The world hasn't moved beyond certificates. Even jobs and skills now require certification. People with masters still get paid more one the average than people with BSc for the same role. And for you to move higher and even get some opportunities your education and skills both speak for you.

This is not to take anything away from your friend though. He could be one of the exceptions. But then again sooner or later he has to compete with another exceptional person with the same skill set.

Who told you everybody that enters Germany with student visa go there for schooling...Considering all tie options available, student visa still remains the best.. Imagine you have about two years to settle down and look for job, anytime you get the job you quit your studies and start working.. Unlike entering Germany with 6 months job hunt visa where you would be under serious pressure to get a job within that short period.

Beliefs like this is why it's getting harder and harder to get a student visa into Germany from Nigeria. The government has probably run the numbers and discovered that most Nigerians who come to study do not actually get the qualification they came for and instead abandon it for some low skilled jobs most times. Other nationalities like Indians come in and focus on their studies, finish it and then get higher paying jobs and contribute to the system.
