IslamRe: Ways To Rock HIJAB For Different Events by busar(m): 8:04am On Dec 29, 2015
HIJAB FASHION INDUSTRIES
I have never seen ‘hijab” in fashion and “hijab fashion” to
this extent in my life. When I started wearing the hijab,
I remember being looked at with curiosity by many
people who just couldn’t figure out what was that thing
on my head in a sweltering 55-degree Celsius heat!
The only people who understood who I was (i.e a
foreigner Muslim) were the shop owners in Janpath,
New Delhi, India as that area is frequented by foreign
nationals and many of them are from Iran and other
Arab countries.
It was hilarious when they would talk amongst
themselves in Hindi (our national language) to determine
how much to raise the price of what I was looking to
buy. And the look on their faces when I replied in
perfect Hindi? Priceless, I tell you.
Well, 9/11 changed it all for me. I remember somebody
referring to me and my friends as “ Taliban” in Goa
when I went there with my class on a college trip. It
was pretty embarrassing, but well, the youth doesn’t
care. Does it? But, Alhamdulillah, All praise is to
God, the “hijab” has come a long way since that time.
Now, where ever I go, from the most crowded places in
India and overseas to the tiny remote island off the
shore of Canada, I see heads covered with hijab moving
alongside blondes and brunettes and purple streaked heads
and every other color in between.
Another dramatic change that I see around me is a
mushrooming of a “hijab fashion industry” that was non-
existent till some 10 years back. Now, hijab fashion
experts are burning the midnight oil in trying to blend the
latest trends in fashion with “modest Islamic attire”.
They are trying their very best to prove to non-Muslims
and Muslims alike that well, hijabis are as trendy,
cool, hip, smart and fashionable as those who don’t wear
hijab.
All you have to do is type hijab fashion in the Google
search bar and well, you will be bombarded with blogs,
websites, articles, photos and pages dedicated to making
you look hip and happening with a Hijab! And, of
course, let me not forget to mention the endless list of
tutorials on YouTube on how to wear the hijab. They
even have tutorials on the type of makeup that goes with
hijab!
Phew! All that hard work man!
But the question is “Is it all really necessary”? Do we
really need a “hijab fashion industry”? Isn’t it actually
pulling us away from the basic message of hijab, which is
covering ourselves in a way that is not attracting
attention?
When a woman wears a beautiful scarf that compliments
her face and wears layers of makeup, is she actually
fulfilling the requirements of hijab that were set for us by
Allah and His Messenger ?
“O Prophet! Tell your wives and your
daughters and the women of the
believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all
over their bodies (i.e. screen themselves
completely except the eyes or one eye to
see the way). That will be better, that
they should be known (as free
respectable women) so as not to be
annoyed. And Allah is Ever
Oft‑Forgiving, Most Merciful ” (Al-Ahzab,
33:59)
According to the hadith in Bukhari, “May Allah have
mercy on the Muhaajir women. When Allah revealed the
words “and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna
(i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms)”, they tore the
thickest of their aprons (a kind of garment) and covered
their faces with them. “
Please, hear me out here. I am not against fashion,
dressing up or makeup. A woman needs to dress up, look
pretty, wear nice clothes and jewelry but not for public
display.
“And tell the believing women to lower
their gaze (from looking at forbidden
things), …..and not to show off their
adornment except only that which is
apparent (like both eyes for necessity to
see the way, or outer palms of hands or
one eye or dress like veil, gloves, head
cover, apron), and to draw their veils all
over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies,
faces, necks and bosoms) and not to
reveal their adornment except to their
husbands, or their fathers, or their
husband’s fathers, or their sons, or their
husband’s sons, or their brothers or their
brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or
their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters
in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom
their right hands possess, or old male
servants who lack vigor, or small
children who have no sense of feminine
sex. And let them not stamp their feet so
as to reveal what they hide of their
adornment. And all of you beg Allaah to
forgive you all, O believers, that you may
be successful” (An Nur 24:31)
I know that sometimes, it is hard not to feel pain or hurt
because of the looks or comments that come our way
when we try to dress up as per the rules set by Allah
. After all we are human, aren’t we? At such
times, these “hijab fashion” posts seem like a gift from
Allah so that we can copy their ideas and look
“cool” and shut these people up.
Right? No, wrong!
This is not right. As Muslims, our sole purpose in life is
to worship Allah as Allah says,
“And I did not create the jinn and
mankind except to worship Me”. (Adh-
Dhariyat 51:57)
When we seek help in these fashion blogs for advice on
how to wear hijab that actually makes us look more
attractive just to quieten these people, we are moving
away from His mercy. Allah has asked us to seek
help through patience and prayer. We don’t need to
resort to hijab fashion posts to help us look beautiful.
We need to move closer to our religion and look for His
approval about the way we do our hijab. At at the end
of the day, it is only Him we seek to please and expect
our reward from.
Of course, we will follow the fashion trends and fads
and go shopping and have fun while doing it (please don’t
forget the dua for entering the market )
but not for public display. There is nothing wrong is
looking neat, clean, tidy and smart. But there is
definitely wrong is wearing things which attract attention
while in public.

Nairaland GeneralI Will Not Apologise! by busar(op): 8:51pm On Nov 24, 2015
Khaled Almaeena

The Paris attacks that killed 130 people and injured hundreds of others are still capturing headlines. They also occupy the top spot in social media the world over.

The attack came days after suicide bombers blew up about 40 people in a Beirut suburb and before that a Russian plane was blown up over Sinai killing more than 200 people. Daesh (the self-proclaimed IS) took responsibility for all of these murderous acts.

I received several phone calls from Western journalists asking for the Saudi point of view on these murderous attacks to which my reply was that all of us condemn these inhumane and ugly acts which do not serve any purpose, but on the contrary malign our society and our religion.

One caller asked if we will apologize. I almost screamed at him. Apologize for what?! Are we responsible for the actions of mysterious groups that destroy and kill? Are we responsible for all the evil acts being committed and falsely attributed to Islam?! I am not going to apologize, I said.

Let an international investigation be conducted and the findings made public. I am not a believer in conspiracy theories, but since the 9/11 attack until now many questions remain unanswered. How is it that after every major incident a passport is found intact? As if people walk the streets with their passports in their pockets and the passports are made of nonflammable material that is resistant to fires and bomb attacks.

In New York, it was a Saudi passport; in Paris it was a Syrian passport which later was found to be a fake and there were 11 passports with the same name and number!

We have had enough of preachers of hate and ignorant politicians inciting animosity against Muslims and ranting anti-Islamic rhetoric that is racist and full of hate. Enough of ignorant people going on the rampage uttering jingoistic chants forgetting the complicity of their own governments in creating Al-Qaeda and Daesh-like organizations and propping up dictatorships in the region, dismantling armies and social order and creating vacuum that led to strife.

I stand with the entire world in condemning the wanton, ruthless and mindless destruction of innocent human lives, but please do not ask me to apologize for something for which I am not responsible. Have the Jews apologized for Netanyahu’s daily massacre of Palestinians? Have the Dalai Lama and Aung San Suu Kyi apologized for the brutal holocaust inflicted on the Muslims of Myanmar? Has Indian Prime Minister Modi apologized for the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat or the lynching of people alleged to have eaten beef? Have Bush, Blair, Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz and Bremer apologized for the death of a million Iraqis?

While the world rises up in arms against the cowardly murders of the innocent in Paris, no one protested when over a 100 Turks were blown to bits by Daesh in Ankara.

This selective grief is not palatable to me and to many around the world. These acts are carried out by people who are supposedly Muslims, but are mostly managed by shadowy groups operating under the umbrella of Western agencies. They do not represent us. I am not guilty, and therefore, I will not apologize!

What's wrong with you people (majority of the posters) for heaven sake?
As an employer, you have a responsibility to ensure duty of care is entrenched in your business processes. It's not unreasonable to expect you to be flexible by recognising and acknowledging her physical strength would be affected due to ramadan period.

Would you have complained or sacked her if she was pregnant?

Besides, I don't think you clearly defined her role from the onsent. In your own words, she is meant to complement when necessary. This to me doesn't explicitly state that's her job description as it's a role to be assumed as at when there is the need.

Anyhoo, have a 1-2-1 session with her to find the best way forward that will meet both of your needs.

PS: Maybe you need to revist your business model if as evident you are having to deal with increase demand for your services. Perhaps, what you need is another man (positive discrimination is allowed for manual jobs) instead of hiring a female with less physical attributes

Good luck
You really made some valid points. Best comments ever.

Fasting started on Thursday not Tuesday. Your comments are contradictory. earlier you said she was working actively(assisting the laundry man), later you said "it's not as if she was hardworking".
