Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s vice president has said government both at the national and state level cannot provide adequate health care for its populace.

Mr Osinbajo stated this on Tuesday while declaring open the national health dialogue organised by Premium Times in Abuja.

The number two citizen represented by Nicolas Audiferren, his chief physician, suggested that an effective national health insurance scheme may be the best option for the development of the nation’s health sector.

“It has become obvious that the government, both at the state and federal levels, cannot adequately provide health care services. That’s the simple truth,” the vice president said.

“Our view is that an effective national health insurance scheme remains the best option for the development of our sector and for efficient health care services in this country,” he added.

Osinbajo reeled out some of the achievements of President Muhammadu Buhari administration in the health sector.

“We were able to allocate 1% of the consolidated revenue fund towards the funding of key health initiative in compliance with National Health act.

“Last year we also launched the patients’ bill of right, initiated renovations and improve funding for primary health care institutions. We have been able to eradicate polio.” he said.

PoliticsWhat Actually Happened – Ebonyi Govt Reacts To Creation Of Ruga In Izza by Calculating(op): 10:21am On Oct 16, 2019
The Ebonyi State government has reacted to social media reports that a Rural Grazing Area (RUGA) has been created in the state.

Trending reports on social media last week claimed herdsmen were brought into the state with plots of lands allocated to them for settlement.

The report seen by TODAY POLITICS was backed up with images and video clips. It was credited to a journalist residing in the state who reported that herdsmen alongside their family members were transported into Izza Local Government Area with the help of security agencies.

Youths in the area were said to have resisted their visitors from settling in the area despite the presence of security agencies.

“They were later directed to another land still in the same state,” an online new medium which published the report quoted the journalist, Timothy Chinonso, as reporting.

But dismissing the report, the state government said it has not approved the creation of Ruga in any part of the state and narrated what transpired.

It explained that the herdsmen were on their way out of the state after they were asked to relocate from a settlement in the state.

“Contrary to the spiritless fabrication of these political jobbers, what happened on 12/10/2019 was the normal movement of cattle rearers who were on transit from their temporary camp at the Centenary City Abakaliki to a neighbouring state, where they have found more conducive for their Cattle’s livelihood,” a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Social Orientation, Uchenna Orji, partly read.

“These herdsmen once camped in a government reserved area at the Centenary City, Abakaliki but when government started to develop the place for government use as agreed, the herdsmen on their volition decided to look for greener pasture elsewhere in a neighbouring state,” Mr Orji added.

PoliticsSowore Won’t Be Released Until Due Process Is Followed – DSS by Calculating(op): 10:05pm On Sep 26, 2019
The Department of State Service (DSS) has said it won’t release Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, until due process is followed.

The DSS stated this in response to why it has refused to release the former presidential candidate despite the latter meeting bail conditions granted him by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

The publisher being detained by the security agency is accused of treason, fraud and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari. The federal government has slammed a seven count charge to that effect on him.

He was arrested earlier last month for spearheading a revolutionary protest that went on despite his absence. The publisher was granted bail after the DSS declined renewing an order seeking his continued detention after an earlier 45-day detention mandate it secured elapsed on September 21.

Sowore was asked to deposit his international passport with the court registry, a condition his legal representative said has been met.

Despite reportedly meeting the bail condition, the DSS has said the publisher will continue in detention until due process was followed.

“We have not received the court order. And his (Sowore’s) counsel is a very senior member of the bar and he knows the process to follow; this process has not been followed,” Punch Newspaper quoted the spokesman of the agency, Peter Afunanya, as saying when contacted.

Responding, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) whose chamber is representing Sowore said the DSS was economical with the truth as one Ayuba Adam from the agency’s Legal Service Department received the said court order on September 25, 2019 at exactly 10:08am.

PoliticsAs Vice President You Can’t Waive Your Immunity, Lawyer Tells Osinbajo by Calculating(op): 5:10pm On Sep 26, 2019
Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has been told that he lacks the power to waive the constitutional immunity which he enjoys as privilege attached to his office.

Constitutionally, legal actions cannot be instituted against the president, his vice, state governors alongside their deputy. This is one of the rights they are entitled to for being in office.

Although those holding the above-mentioned positions can be probed, they, however, cannot be prosecuted while in office.

Mr Osinbajo while reacting to corruption allegations levelled against him, stated his readiness to waive away his immunity and allow for proper investigation into the assertion.

Some Nigerians are opining that the vice president lacks power to do so. One of them, a legal practitioner, has said the number two citizen cannot constitutionally waive his immunity while still in office.

“Based on the extant constitutional regime, the Vice President Prof. Osinbajo, cannot waive his immunity,” said Inibehe Effiong.

The lawyer quoted some legal judgement to back up his claim.

“The Supreme Court decided in 2001 in the case of Tinubu v. I. M. B. Securities Plc that the constitutional immunity under Section 308 of the Constitution cannot be waived.

“In the said Tinubu’s case, former governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu decided to waive his immunity to defend a civil claim initiated against him. The Supreme Court barred the then gov of Lagos State from proceeding with the suit,” the lawyer added.

Mr Effiong however said the vice president has the right to sue for defamation of character.

“While legal proceedings cannot be initiated against him, the Courts have decided in several cases that immunity does not prevent the beneficiaries from suing for defamation of character. In other words, Prof. Osinbajo can sue but cannot be sued.

“This was the position taken by the Supreme Court in 2007 in the case of Global Excellence Communications Ltd. V. Donald Duke.

“Finally, I wish to state that the immunity under Section 308 of the Constitution does not extern to criminal investigation by law enforcement agencies. This was the position taken by the Supreme Court in 2002 in the celebrated case of Chief Gani Fawehinmi v. IGP.

“Provided the investigation does not result in the arrest or detention of the VP or compelling his appearance, he can be investigated,” he added.

The lawyer said he views the decision of the vice president to waive his immunity as political.

“Osinbajo’s statement is political. Immunity does not cover investigation, therefore the question of waiver does not arise in the circumstance,” Effiong said.

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, and other Nigerians have dared Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, over his claim of innocency on corruption allegations peddled against him.

In daring the Mr Osinbajo, Nigerians are asking the former to resign his position and give way for probe rather than promise to waive away his constitutional immunity.

The vice president was alleged to have misused about N90billion given to him for the prosecution of the last general election and this is said to be responsible for the recent redeployment of agencies under him in a bit to whittle down his powers politically.

While denying the allegation, the number two citizen promised to waive his immunity from prosecution in a bid to prove his innocence.

Some Nigerians are however not satisfied with the reaction of the vice president, calling on him to step down from office to give way for proper investigation.

Some are of the opinion that should he be found innocent, President Muhammadu Buhari should renominate him as his vice.

“He will eat you for breakfast. I know that young man: he is a real Ijaw! Deeply courageous and tough as nails. U cannot intimidate him or break him,” he added.

“If Osinbajo truly wants to waive his immunity, he should resign and submit himself to ICPC tomorrow morning for investigation,” said Deji Adeyanju.

“There’s nothing to fear. After investigation, Buhari will re-nominate him to National Assembly if he is corruption free,” the political activist said in reaction.

“Osinbajo is being disingenuous when he said he’d waive his “constitutional immunity” to allow for a fair probe of allegations of corruption against him,” tweets Farooq Kperogi.

“He can’t legally waive his immunity while still in office. That’s unconstitutional. Resign & d immunity will be gone by default!” Mr Kperogi added.

Boko Haram is still occupying a senatorial zone in Borno State, a federal lawmaker at the House of Representatives, has said.

Ahmadu Jaha, representing Damboa/Gwoza/Chibok federal constituency, made the claim Tuesday while contributing to a motion at the lower chamber during plenary.

Mr Jaha said out of the 10 local government areas that make up Borno North Senatorial District, only two LGAs are not under the control of the terrorists.

“A number of geographical locations in Borno state and other insurgency-related areas are under the occupation of Boko Haram,” the lawmaker said in a video trending online.

“Let us take for instance, in a local government that has 13 electoral wards like my own Gwoza, only three or four are not under the occupation of Boko Haram.

“In Chibok, I have 10 electoral wards, only two are not under the occupation of Boko Haram. In Damboa, I have 10 electoral wards, only one is not under the occupation of Boko Haram. This is as far as Chibok/Damboa/Gwoza federal constituency is concerned.

“The same thing… the chief whip to the house can bear me witness, out of the 10 local governments in northern Borno, only two local governments and it is only their headquarters, are still not under the occupation of Boko Haram,” he added.

Before the APC administration of President Muhammadu Buhari took over power in 2015, Boko Haram terrorists were reportedly in control of some part of the Northeast region.

Mr Buhari and his government has repeatedly claimed to have decimated the terrorists to the extent they are no longer in control of any territory in the country.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called for the withdrawal of charges pressed against Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters.

Mr Sowore was charged alongside Olawale Bakare, otherwise known as Mandate. The duo were charged for treason, fraud and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.

While calling for the immediate withdrawal of the charges in an open letter to Mr Abukabar Malami, SAN, Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the group said going ahead with the case it described as being politically motivated will amount to mocking the criminal justice system of the country.

“We urge you to use your role as a trustee of the public interest under section 174 of the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 (as amended) to end several of similar trumped-up cases going on in several states,” the epistle dated September 21 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, partly read.

RomanceAfter Arguing On Twitter, Apostle Suleman Deletes False Tweet About Herdsmen by Calculating(op): 6:44pm On Jul 11, 2019
Johnson Suleman, the general overseer of the Omega Fire Ministries, has deleted a false tweet he made against herdsmen particularly from the Fulani extraction.

Mr Suleman, a fierce critic of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, in the early hours of Thursday posted a tweet on Twitter with an image partly showing herdsmen pantheon on the New Nigerian international passport.

According to his tweet, he was claiming the pages of the passport were littered with the pantheon of herdsmen, giving credence to the Fulanisation agenda of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

The cleric is not the only one to have made the claim, findings by TODAY POLITICS showed Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister; Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) and other unsuspecting Nigerians also spread the false information on the micro-blogging site.

Moment after the cleric criticised the development, a twitter user, Oluwasegun Olajuwan, drew his attention to the false information on his tweet.

Mr Olajuwan urged Mr Suleman not to allow politicians use him to cause chaos and division among Nigerians.

“With due respect Apst, practically all tribes are represented on the pages of this passport, cattle farming is part of us for long. Now politicians made it to bring divisions amongst us.Sir pls don’t let them use STRONG men of God like u to bring confusion. You are a ROLE MODEL,” he tweeted in response.

Suleman responded querying: “And herdsmen are part of us too?you were respectful in ur submission that’s why I won’t block u..is cattle rearing agriculture? ..is farming a major thing in ibo land?how can u see something so crystal clear on the passport and still be defensive of evil?

“I have lost members in church who were killed by herdsmen..may you not experience same in Jesus name..so you know why a few of us are fighting the agenda..when I tweeted how arrested herdsmen were released, did u retreat?.na dem,” he added.

While the conversation was on, another Twitter user asked if cattle rearing is no longer agriculture.

“Cattle rearing is mining, since it is not agriculture? asked Abu-Imran

Findings by TODAY POLITICS showed that the claim of the cleric is false as other tribes in the country also have their pantheon in the international passport. This might largely be responsible why the cleric deleted his earlier tweet.

Screenshot of the conversation between the cleric and the Twitter user.

Mr Olajuwan on the concluding part of the conversation suggested ranching as the permanent solution to herders and farmers clashes nationwide.

“So unfortunate sir and this is a sad experience that no one will pray for and the good lord will protect us all and guide u in wisdom to lead your followers sir.
I believe promoting RANCHING system is the lasting solution and supporting it will do more good than anything else,” he added.

PoliticsWhy I Condemn Only Killings In Nigeria – Apostle Suleman by Calculating(op): 4:35pm On Jul 11, 2019
Johnson Suleman, the general overseer of Omega Fire Ministries has revealed why he chooses to condemn killings in the country.

Mr Suleman, a fierce critic of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has always condemned killings in the country especially in the North when it is perceived the Christians are been persecuted.

One of such criticism, TODAY POLITICS recalls, landed him and Nasir El-rufai, the incumbent governor of Kaduna State, at loggerheads when the latter failed to address killings of Christmas in southern part of the state.

He is one of those opposing the creation of Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) for herdsmen of Fulani extraction, largely because of their alleged violence attitude towards their host communities.

Revealing why he does not criticize the government on the economy and other issues, he said this is because other subject matters are political.

He said his decision to condemn killings across the nation is because Human lives are sacrosanct and beyond politics.

“I get irritated when people say our speaking against fulanization is political,” the cleric said in a tweet on Thursday, querying, “have you heard me complain of economy?of the increase of Nigeria debts?that’s for politicians to tackle but security is for all of us..human life is sacrosanct.”

He said although he loves people from the Fulani extraction, herders from the tribe are giving them a bad name.

“I love fulanis..there are good ones with a great heart.very nice and loving fulani men/women..but this herders are doing so much damage to that extraction,” he said in another tweet.

PoliticsShiites And Police Clash At Federal Secretariat Abuja by Calculating(op): 12:55pm On Jul 11, 2019
Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) continued their protest on Thursday demanding the release of Ibrahim El-zakzaky, their leader who has been in detained since 2015.

Mr El-zakzaky has been in detention after members of his movement clashed with personnel of the Nigerian Army.

Despite court orders for his release, the government has refused to obey the rule of law by releasing the detainee. This has forced members of the group to embarked on several protests demanding his release.

The latest of such action by the Islamic group occurred when they protested at the Federal Secretariat located in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Thursday.

In it, gun shots from men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) were heard in the air in a bid to disperse the seemingly angry protesters.

Although, the action of the police disperse members of the group with five of them arrested, Punch Newspaper reports that workers at the Secretariat were in disarray when rumors of retaliation, by the group said to have went to regroup, filtered in.

Motorists and passers-by were also reported to have deserted the area in a bid to scamper for safety.

The group had earlier in the week clashed with security operatives when they took their protest to the National Assembly, which led to the loss of lives and injuries.

Meanwhile, a former lawmaker, Shehu Sani and legislators at the House of Representatives has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to release the detained cleric to avoid the formation of another terrorist group in the country.

PoliticsRelease El-zakzaky, Shehu Sani Advises Buhari by Calculating(op): 10:30am On Jul 11, 2019
Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to release Ibrahim El-zakzaky, the detained leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN).

Mr El-zakzaky has been in detention since 2015 when members of his movement clashed with personnel of Nigerian Army.

Despite several court rulings ordering the release of the cleric, the federal government headed by Mr Buhari has looked the other way, citing national security as reason for his continued detention.

A clash between members of the islamic group and security operatives earlier in the week at the National Assembly turned bloody with both sides sustaining injuries.

Lawmakers at the House of Representatives has called on the president to obey the rule of law by releasing the detainee in other to prevent further break down of law and order.

Joining the call is Mr Sani who failed his re-election bid to the upper legislative chamber at the lawmaking arm.

“The continuous confrontation with the members of the Islamic Movt over the detention of their leader & his wife is avoidable,” the former lawmaker said in a tweet on Thursday.

“We should learn our lessons as a country & deal with other multiple security challenges stretching us.The FG should simply obey court orders in this regard,” Sani added.

PoliticsRuga: Uwazuruike Blasts Ohanaeze 'Urging Igbos To Defend Themselves, Cowardice' by Calculating(op): 1:22am On Jul 11, 2019
The call by Ohanaeze Ndigbo to citizens of South-East region to defend themselves has been described as cowardice.

This is coming from Ralph Uwazuruike, leader of Biafra Independence Movement (BIM).

Ohanaeze, the socio-cultural group representing the people of the Igbo predominantly area had urged those from the geo-political zone living outside the region to defend themselves from any form of attack.

The call followed the 30-day ultimatum by Northern youth groups to unleash mayhem on those whose state governors rejected the implementation of Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) for herdsmen of the Fulani extraction in their domain.

Kicking against the call for defense, Uwazuruike described Ohanaeze and state governors from the region as the problem of the people.

In a video seen by TODAY POLITICS, the secessionist leader, whose group seeks the dissolution of Nigeria, said the people need to be armed before an order for defense is made.

He spoke in Igbo language while relaxing in a conducive environment, urging his kinsmen not to heed the call for self defense.

“Defend yourselves is an act of cowardice,” he interjectly said in English, adding that, “I mean…I don’t know how to describe it…as in what?”

Uwazuruike who described the youth groups that issued the threat as kids said consultations with stakeholders must be made before the call of such magnitude from Ohanaeze is made.

The founder of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) urged Ohanaeze to learn from other ethnic groups and stop disgracing and installing fears in the minds of the Igbos residing in other parts of the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the implementation of the initiative as the permanent solution to farmers and herders clashes.

Mr Buhari later suspended the project said to be optional, due to its rejection in the South despite interested states welcoming it in the North. This further fuelled speculations that the government is on a land grabbing mission for herdsmen from the Fulani extraction.

Lawmakers at the House of Representatives has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to release El-Zakzaky, the detained leader of Shiite Islamic group.

Mr El-Zakzaky has been in detention since members of his Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) clashed with personnel of the Nigerian Army in 2015.

The bloody clash led to the arrest of the cleric alongside his spouse. They were arraigned and granted bail by different competent courts but the federal government has refused to obey the decision of the judiciary citing national security as its reason.

Members of the group which have severally protested and demanded the release of their leader stormed the national assembly in protest on Tuesday and clashed with security operatives at the legislative arm of government.

It later turned bloody with members of the islamic group gunning down policemen attached to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) while attempting to gain entrance into the lawmaking arm.

During plenary on Wednesday, several lawmakers urged the federal government headed by Mr Buhari to release the detained leader of the group and prevent the formation of another terrorist group in the country.

“If the court has given an order for the release of the man, we should call on the government to release him. The discourse should not be on the invasion of the national assembly alone,” Onofiok Luke from Akwa Ibom State said while contributing to the motion raised by the minority leader, Ndudi Elumelu, calling for the probe of the Tuesday incident.

“I want to urge the federal government to look into the matter of the leader of this movement and allow the rule of law to take its course, to ensure that Boko Haram is not replicated in Shiites movement,” Bamidele Salam, from Osun State who described the detention of the cleric as injustice, said.

“The government should release him and ensure surveillance, with enough security operatives to monitor his activities,” Simon Davou from Plateau state added.
