Politics › Obasanjo Should Explain Why He Failed To Attend May 29, June 12 Events – Shehu by Calculating(op): 7:21am On Jun 20, 2019 |
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, will explain why he refused to attend the May 29 and June 12 state functions in the country, the Nigerian Presidency has said.
While President Muhammadu Buhari was inaugurated for another term of four years on May 29, the nation celebrated the democracy day on June 12.
Mr Obasanjo did not attend the two events. He is not the only past leader to have stayed away from the state functions. The president’s predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan; former military leaders; Ibrahim Babangida and Abdusalam Abubakar were all absent during the celebrations which held at the Eagle Square.
While Yakubu Gowon, former military leader, attended the president’s inauguration, he however stayed away during the democracy day celebration.
The presidency in a statement on Wednesday said Mr Obasanjo must explain why he failed to appear at the events which he was invited to attend.
Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman, who signed the statement also dismissed insinuations that the former president was not invited but failed to release evidence to back up his claims.
“The former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, owes an answer to Nigerians on his absence from the 2019 Presidential inauguration and Democracy Day celebration because the claim that he was not invited or he did not receive an invitation cannot be sustained,” Mr Shehu said. This is one of the reasons they don't want to provide employment for the youths, because they know what the young people can do if they lay their hands on cash.

neoclassical: Is there still hope for the youths of this country? Some years back, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu was the Governor of Abia State, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe was his deputy and Sen. Theodore Orji was his Chief of Staff. Today, the 3-man cabal are the three Senators representing Abia State, while Sen. Theodore Orji's son is the new Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly. Same thing happens mostly in all the states of the Federation. Some are Governors, while their sons or son inlaws are in the Senate or House of Reps. How do we break this jinx? This calls for serious concern among the youths of Nigeria. It is high time we began to take our destinies in our own hands. Enough is enough. It is easier said than done, in Nigeria of today that the youths will come out? Kick against it and see majority of them support it. |

The presidency had repeatedly defended its stand wherein it compared the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the groups representing the Yoruba and Igbo races respectively in the country.
Mr Bakare who launched the attack during a service at his ministry said those comparing the cattle-breeding group to Afenifere and Ohanaeze Ndigbo are insane.

Mr Buhari gave the warning when he played host to Mr Osinbajo and top government officials to the breaking of Ramadan fast at the Presidential Villa on Monday. TraderMoni is an empowerment scheme of the federal government created specifically for petty traders and artisans across Nigeria.

“These are very good initiatives. Initially, I was quite reluctant but I must admit that they are very good programmes and they endear this government to a lot of poor people because of these N5,000 or N10,000 being given to them as loans.
“They are fantastic programmes and I have to admit quite honestly that the vice president was ahead of me by insisting on them.
“But he knows me, if he insists I will say `okay go and do what you like.’ He did it and I’m very pleased as he is being very successful,’’ he said.
The president also frowned at elites in the country for doing nothing to tackle the living conditions of poor Nigerians.

Politics › Buhari’s Cabinet Members Still Operating Bank Accounts Not Linked To TSA – Maina by Calculating(op): 1:27pm On May 11, 2019 |
Former chairman of the Pension Reforms Task Team (PRTT), Abdulrasheed Maina, has resurfaced with corruption allegations against serving officials in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr Maina, a fugitive declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) alleged that some top government officials are still operating bank accounts not linked to the Treasury Single Account (TSA).
TSA is a public accounting system using a single account, or a set of linked accounts by government to ensure all revenue receipts and payments are done through a Consolidated Revenue Account (CRA) at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The former pension chief was first removed from office in 2010 by former president, Goodluck Jonathan, on allegations of stealing pension funds.
He was secretly reinstated and promoted by officials in the present administration but was dismissed by Mr Buhari in 2017 when his reinstatement was made public.
Since his dismissal, he has gone underground, speaking from his hiding place.
In an interview on Human Rights Radio, 101.1 FM, Abuja, on Friday, the former pension boss pledged to come out of hiding if the president can assure him of full protection.
He said he was still in the country, contrary to reports that he has left, daring security agencies to storm his home and arrest him.
“I am in Nigeria, I just travelled for lesser Hajj, I have been in Nigeria for long, in my house. If I did something let them come and arrest me. I didn’t do anything,” Maina said revealing that the current Head of Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, still operates bank accounts that are not linked to the Treasury Single Account. Femi Fani-Kayode, former Aviation Minister, has opined why Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), should not be respected as canvassed by the Nigerian Presidency.
The presidency had warned against criminalising the cattle-breeding group, saying they are also stakeholders in the country.
In a statement on Friday, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesman said the group ought to be respected.
This is after he had likened Miyetti Allah to other socio-cultural groups in the country.
Disagreeing with the position, Mr Fani-Kayode opined that the activities of the group ought to earn them hatred from Nigerians and not the respect as proposed by the presidential spokesman.
He said the group should be hated because its members have killed Nigerians much more than the dreaded Boko Haram terrorists.
“Miyetti Allah and their supporter of APC ISWA Fulani herdsmen have shed more innocent blood than any other terrorist org. in the last 4 years including Boko Haram,” the minister, a known critic of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, said in a tweet Saturday morning.
“They are worthy of our hatred, contempt and disdain and not our respect,” he added.
Members of the cattle-breeding group are often alleged to kill members of their host communities, should attempts be made at preventing their cows from eating up farm produce.

The Nigerian Presidency has warned against the criminalisation of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).
Before now, some Nigerians including some socio-cultural groups in the country refer to Miyetti Allah as a group made up of criminals.
A former minister had recently described the group as purveyors of violence and murders.
The minister was reacting to the meeting between the federal government and the cattle-breeding group over insecurity in some parts of the country.
The group was said to have reached an agreement with the government in which they will be paid to caution some alleged bad eggs in their midst. The government which defended the meeting as one of its measures to find lasting peace dismissed claims that it offered money to the group.
But warning that the norm in which the group is described should henceforth stop, the presidency said there is no group which does not have criminals among them. Read More: https://www.google.com/amp/s/politicstimesng.com/dont-criminalise-miyetti-allah-presidency-warns/amp/ |

Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano State governor, has broken his silence after being accused of initiating moves aimed at dethroning Lamido Sanusi, the embattled emir of the state. Mr Ganduje, re-elected for a second term in office was reportedly not supported by Mr Sanusi, during the 2019 general election. This was due to political differences between the duo. But a new twist was added to it on Wednesday when lawmakers of the state assembly initiated and passed a bill seeking to create adding four new emirates. The governor was fingered as the arrowhead of the plan when he gave his assent the bill on Thursday. Speaking to State House Correspondents on Friday, the governor denied he had anything against the monarch. He said there was need to create the additional emirates because he is moving the state to the next level and traditional institutions in the state have a vital role to play. Politics › Why Traditional Rulers Are Victimized By State Governors – Shehu Sani by Calculating(op): 5:44am On May 10, 2019 |
Shehu Sani, lawmaker representing Kaduna Central at the Senate, has revealed why traditional rulers are often been victimized by their state governors.
Mr Sani, an outgoing lawmaker, said the absence of clearly defined roles of the monarchs in the Nigerian Constitution made them preys in the hands of their state governors.
He stated this while reacting to the current travails of Lamido Sanusi, the embattled emir of Kano, who watched helplessly while his domain was balkanized in a bid to whittle down his influence in the state.
Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano State governor signed a bill aimed at balkanizing the emirate on Wednesday. He is also said to be probing the financial earnings of the monarch, a move political analysts suggested will finally see Sanusi being booted out of office. For the Kaduna lawmaker, traditional rulers whose duty are mainly in areas of security, ought to be protected by the constitution.
“Absence of clearly defined roles in the constitution makes traditional rulers vulnerable to the abuse of power, victims of blackmail and pawns and punching bags in the political chess game of their respective states,” Sani said in a Facebook post early Friday.

“During elections, they are forced to campaign for their states Governors and the ruling parties in their respective states or risk being dethroned.
“Traditional rulers are expected to play major roles in security matters with no security votes other than handouts thrown at them by their states Governors. “A Traditional ruler who wants to survive must be stupidly loyal, dumb and humiliatingly subservient and one that must always distance himself from the political adversaries of the Governor in office.
“Traditional rulers doing a Governors bidding can hardly be accused of aiding kidnappers or inciting inter ethnic violence even if its true. State Governors habitually creates political emirates and chiefdoms to settle scores or to reward loyalty or to reinforce their power base or for the purpose of divide and rule.
“The Traditional rulers are also not free of blame, when most of them have bastardized and commercialized the institution by dispensing Traditional tittles to people in Government and those that can pay. They create and sale funny titles with no historical basis, roots and antecedent, and to people majorly undeserving.
*Almost All Governors parade one or multiple fake Traditional titles given to them while in office. Traditional institutions have being largely desecrated by political interference, partisanship, erosion of cultural and moral values, materialism and outright violations and meddling, inimical and corrosive to the very ethical and moral component that the institution claims to possess.
“Without constitutional protection, Traditional rulers will continue to be forced by their Governors to behave like party Excos or political appointees or be ejected,” he added. Source: https://politicstimesng.com/why-traditional-rulers-are-victimized-by-state-governors-shehu-sani/ |
