Politics / Jonathan’s Loyalists scramble To Overtake Buhari by CaptJHMiller: 6:40pm On Oct 19, 2014

Following reports Saturday that a former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, was leading President Goodluck Jonathan in a poll organised by the Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Reno Omokri, several aides and loyalists of the president are mobilising extensively to reverse the trend,  PREMIUM TIMES has learnt.
Insiders in the president’s camp said presidency and administration officials as well as the top hierarchy of the governing Peoples Democratic Party felt “deeply embarrassed” by the direction of the poll and are mobilising supporters of the president in and outside Nigeria to quickly get online and vote in his favour.
“Phone calls were made to supporters of the president in the Transformation Ambassador of Nigeria (TAN), Goodluck Support Groups (GSG), Gejites and other groups sympathetic to the president,” one of our sources said.
“They were being pressured to get online and reverse the results in favour of the president, even if means voting multiple times with multiple devices,” said the source who preferred not to be named for security reasons.
A source close to the creator of the Poll, Mr. Omokri, also told PREMIUM TIMES that the presidential aide has a mandate to ensure the poll does not close until Mr. Buhari is “roundly defeated”.
Most online polls have time frames within which they are conducted. The poll by news website, Sahara Reporters, ran for 24 hours. But it is unclear when Mr. Reno’s, which began on October 16, will end.
Buhari still in the lead
Despite the efforts to garner support for the president, which has seen his fortune leaping from 2,455 votes, representing 26.75 percent as at last night, to 12,016 votes, representing, 48.46 percent as at 4:27 p.m. on Sunday, Mr. Buhari remains in the lead.
The former head of state, who led the president with 6,411 votes, representing 69.87 percent on Saturday night, was seen leading with 12,198 votes, representing 49.2 percent at 4:27 p.m. on Sunday.
Also, while 310 persons, representing 3.38 percent were undecided last night; the number of undecided voters increased to 580 votes, representing 2.34 percent.
Background
On October 15, the day former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, declared his intention to run for president in the 2015 election, news website, Sahara Reporters, activated an opinion poll asking Nigerians to indicate who they would vote for if the election were to hold that day between Mr. Buhari (as candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC) and President Goodluck Jonathan ( as candidate of the Peoples Democratic, PDP).
The poll lasted for only 24 hours, and out of a total of 15,435 persons that voted, Mr. Buhari got 12,246 votes, representing 79 percent of the total votes cast, while President Jonathan got 3189 votes, representing 21 percent of the total votes.
However, ostensibly to counter the survey conducted by Sahara Reporters, Mr. Jonathan’s aide, Mr. Omokri, set up a similar poll asking almost the same question posed by the news website.
His poll, which is still running on his blog, “Build Up Nigeria” posed the question: “If the Nigerian Presidential election were held today, who would you vote for between President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari?”.
Mr. Omokri’s poll began a day after Mr. Buhari declared to run, but unlike the one ran by Sahara Reporters, which has since closed, the one by Build Up Nigeria is still running.
Online Poll not scientific
Online polls, such as the ones by Sahara Reporters and Mr. Reno are not representative and do not necessarily represent public opinion.
“It categorically does not represent public opinion – at best, it may coincide with it,” the BBC says in its Guideline on Opinion Polls, Surveys, Questionnaires, Votes and Straw Polls.
“Online votes are particularly vulnerable to campaigns, lobby groups and individuals who seek to organise mass or multi voting. For that reason, some highly controversial issues are not, normally, suitable for online voting as the risk of being hijacked is too great,” the guideline adds.
See the result of the poll as at 4:27 p.m. on Saturday below:

This is just not right, I mean I noticed from a few days ago when an article which was published in 2001 hit the front page in lightening speed because it was made the general look like a fanatic, but threads that promotes him and show his accomplishment are left to gather dust. You can find many interesting topics on nairaland on this declaration, it's had been gathering momentum for days now but somehow it has failed to make it to the frontpage.
I mean if a topic about a football game can make front page days to the actual match and then elevated to the top on the same day, but something as important as this can't even grace the FP 30min to the event, it does say a lot about the management of this forum.

Dear OP , I am currently doing my Bachelors In Computer Science here in Kampala International University , Kampala is a very beautiful place , the tuition is cheap and there are no tribal or religious crisis , and unlike our universities the lecturers here are fair and you are guaranteed a very good result at the end of your three years ,there are so many Nigerians here mostly northerners ,and foreigners mostly Indians and Americans and Chinese have a bigger population than the local citizens . you can ask me any question , but in my own opinion I rather study here than any Nigerian University , #And lastly opportunities are everywhere not just America or Europe but even the deepest part of Sudan or Niger. Explore Into Africa More ,I swear you will be amazed
That's good, nice to hear that. I am happy for uganda. But bro, don't you wish you could say the same thing for nigeria?

Why can't nigeria invest in education, so that we also will boast of Indians, Americans and Chinese also coming over to Nigeria to study? What ever angle we look at it, it's a shame to Nigeria.

Oshey.. Rwanda sends 10 students every year to AUN though. Cameroon also sends but a lesser number.

Well this is understandable, they are coming to a "bigger" and a country with "better" education.

Are you trying to say nigeria has been brought down so low, that uganda education system is better than ours?
Why don't they improve it rather than this embarrassing act.

Lemme explain something to you, my friend, no matter how bad/poor a country is, u must look up to them for whatever the good their good at!

There are many sections in engineering, and uganda may just provide the best cheap option which will be as good as going abroad.
Besides, how did u knw the school wasn't one of those created by the US or other powerful countries in support of education in the poorer countries?

Dude, if u need tin in abundance, go jos,
Groundnut, go north,
Limestone, come ogun state..
Etc.
I hope u understand?
Natural resources is a different thing from education, that one you can't tamper. It's either you have it or you don't.
But education my friend, is something nigeria should be able to create the best of. We have everything needed to make the best schools in the world and make educational tourism a source of revenue for nigeria.
Malaysia did it, why can't nigeria do it?

I still maintain that Northern leaders are the worst form of leaders we have in Nigeria.
They mismanaged the nations revenue for donkey years, they can not even manage their own states for the betterment of their people.

There is no reason why a sane person will try to re-invent the wheel. People from the south west have been able to develop some form of working education system for their people for some decades now, why can't the northern leaders emulate them? the south west people did not develop their education sector by spending collosal sums sending students abroad on scholarships, they built schools at home for their people and made the education free or cheap.

Northerners should stop this abroad scholarship nonsense that is only aimed at stealing money from the state coffers.

We have enough jobless graduates in Nigeria to man any school they will build, they should use the scholarship money to build schools at home and employ Nigerians to man these schools and education will improve in the north.
This is very true.
Do you know the medicine in the state university is not accredited? It's just doesn't make sense, your state university not federal has a course that is not accredited. Instead of developing the programme so that more students will benefit, they select a few from the programme and send then to uganda!
What stops them from buying the lecturers from top schools around the world to come develop their own, it's not like they can't afford it.

Absolutely Nothing!! Uganda has nothing to offer that we cannot get here in Nigeria. it was just a scam, they'll collect huge sums from the public coffers - enough to send the students to the UK - but divert the lion share and shortchange the poor students.
I guess we should be grateful sef that they didn't send them to Cameroon
That's my thought also, there's just nothing those guys can offer that we can't. That is if of course we are "the giant of africa"
It's a bit understandable if it's a personal thing, you send your kid there, but for a state government to do this, it's just a shame!

I could be wrong though, i'll like to hear other views.
Education / Imagne Where Nigeria Sponsors Her Pupils To by CaptJHMiller: 8:44am On Oct 08, 2014
Good morning everyone.
Just over two months ago I came across an add on nairaland that the kaduna state government had form on sale for overseas scholarship. This was limited to engineering graduates and medical students.
I had just come back to the state from lagos, so luckily for me I could buy the form and try to process it. It was sold for two thousand naira.
Anyways, They needed at most 3-5 students from each local government and I was from a very popular local government. I did some permutation and realised my chances were very slim, coupled with the fact that I didn't know anybody in the governing affairs of the state.
Fast forward to about a week ago when I came back for the sallah break, and I was having a conversation and the scholarships came up. I was told that people were cheated out of it and some people that got were later replaced with others and various other heart breaking stories. I was relieved that I didn't waste my money, then came the ultimate question. Where did they take them to?
I bet you I give 50 guesses you will not guess the country. Heck, 100 guesses!!
Wait for it, wait for it!
grin grin
Uganda!!!

I mean, it's a good thing they are trying to provide better education for her indigen, but come on! What could possibly make Uganda better to school in than nigeria, for the love?
I still can't think of a good enough reason!
Are they trying to say the quality of education in Uganda is better than that of Nigeria? Then that's a shame! Could it possible be for exposure? Can Uganda offer a better exposure than nigeria?
What reason could it be?
In Nigeria I believe we have some private schools that can offer decent education than uganda. The American university of Nigeria, covenant and the likes. UI, OAU I believe will be better in terms of public schools.

Rather than celebrating this as an achievement, I think it shows how much a failed state nigeria is.

Nigeria is just dashing money to other African countries, just like SA in recent.

Really? Which disease is that?
