Romance / What Is The Most Blatant Act Of Gold Digging You've Ever Seen, Experienced by Cassahav: 1:05am On Jun 03, 2023
I have a solid contender.

The oil tycoon, Howard J. Marshall, met Anna Nicole Smith when she was dancing nude in a club and fell in love with her, and started showering her with gifts. She was 19 at the time. He was much, much older.

He gave her a giant house to stay in and did all these things to win her over. He pursued her for years, and eventually, she signed on to marry him after she’d been parading around in Hollywood for a few years.

Their wedding picture tells the full story.

She was 26 to his 89.

She was a dancer and knew how to play it all up.

He had bad dementia and was out of it, so she could keep him buying this illusion without too much work.

Well, the billionaire tycoon died shortly after they were married, making it seem like she was entitled to all the money. His quick death wasn’t a coincidence, as I’m almost certain she waited until he was on death’s door to go through with the marriage.

But the tycoon’s son, also a savvy businessman, was having zerrrrrroo part of that nonsense and they went to court and she didn’t get any of the money (she’d already blown through $16 million she’d gotten from Marshall over the years).

I’m not saying she should have gotten zero. But she definitely didn’t deserve billions. The old man was compromised.

Health / Menstrual Changes After Covid Vaccines May Be Far More Common Than Previously by Cassahav: 6:58pm On Jul 16, 2022
When adults gained access to Covid vaccines last year, most knew to expect headaches, fatigue and soreness as side effects.

But some researchers think it’s time to add another common one to the list: temporary menstrual changes.

An analysis published Friday in the journal Science Advances found that 42% of people with regular menstrual cycles said they bled more heavily than usual after vaccination. Meanwhile, 44% reported no change and around 14% reported a lighter period. Among nonmenstruating people — those post-menopause or who use certain long-term contraceptives, for example — the study suggests many experienced breakthrough or unexpected bleeding after their Covid shots.

The survey included over 39,000 people 18 to 80 years old who were fully vaccinated and had not contracted Covid. The study authors cautioned, though, that the percentages do not necessarily represent the rate of menstrual changes in the general population, since people who observed a difference were more likely to participate. The survey’s aim was simply to provide evidence for future studies, not to establish cause and effect.

Still, other recent research also found that the Covid vaccine is associated with a small change in menstrual cycle length.

The new survey started in April 2021, around the time people began to report unexpected bleeding and heavier flow post-vaccine. However, these anecdotes were at the time met with the rebuttal that there was no data linking menstrual changes to vaccination.

That was both true and indicative of a larger problem. Individuals who took part in Covid vaccine trials were not asked if they experienced menstrual changes.

“Before the vaccinations came out, I would say our knowledge on the subject of the connection between immunization and menstrual changes, in general, was nil,” said Candace Tingen, a program director with the gynecologic health and disease branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Tingen was not involved in the recent survey.

Overall, few studies assess the direct effect of vaccination on the menstrual cycle, and most pharmaceutical trials have not included questions about changes to menstruation.

Tingen views this as a mistake. Perhaps, she said, if Covid-19 vaccine trials had asked about menstruation, people would not have been surprised — or frightened — by this unexpected side effect.

“It was really this lack of information that I think caused confusion, fear and perhaps vaccine hesitancy,” she said.

Study co-author Katherine M.N. Lee said that overall, menstruation is understudied when it’s not relevant to pregnancy.

“It gets ignored because of the structure of science,” Lee, an assistant professor at Tulane University, said. “There are very few senior people in science and medicine who are not white men. It’s just not something they are thinking about as part of their lived experience.”

Lee and her colleagues were inspired to ask people about their menstruation cycles after being vaccinated after seeing both friends and strangers online wonder why they experienced an unexpected change.

The survey group included more than 3,500 people who identify as gender diverse. Approximately 84% of participants were white, and none were between the ages of 45 and 55 because the researchers didn’t want to include changes associated with perimenopause, when the body begins the transition to menopause.

The respondents were vaccinated with Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson and Novavax.

The group included people who do not usually menstruate because they are post-menopausal, use long-acting reversible contraceptives or hormonal contraceptives, or are undergoing gender-affirming treatment that stops menstruation. A majority of these respondents experienced breakthrough bleeding after the vaccine.

Among the 238 postmenopausal people in the study who were not on hormonal treatments and had not bled for at least 12 months before their vaccination, 66% reported breakthrough bleeding.

The survey found that in general, people who experienced a heavier flow after their shots were more likely to be nonwhite and older; to use hormonal contraception; to have a diagnosed reproductive condition; to have also experienced fever or fatigue as side effects; or to have been pregnant in the past.

As part of the survey, the team also included free response sections where participants could share their experiences.

“A large number of people reported the feeling that ‘I’m so angry that I didn’t know this ahead of time, but I’m glad I still got it,’” said Kathryn Clancy, an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Illinois and the study's other co-author. “They wouldn’t have changed their decision to get the vaccine, but they felt betrayed by the fact that no one told them to expect it.”

It’s not yet understood why menstrual changes happen after vaccination. Tingen said the answer will likely stem from the overlap between the immune system and endocrine system, which plays a role in reproduction. (There are immune cells in the uterus that help during the process of menstruation, for example.)

“Diet, sleep and stress can all affect the menstrual cycle,” Tingen said. “It is perhaps not surprising that a large immune reaction might throw menstruation off temporarily, in a minor way.”

Covid itself has been shown to disrupt menstruation more significantly than vaccines. This may be because of an ongoing immune reaction and the lifestyle changes that come with being sick. People with long Covid are especially affected, Tingen said, and more research on the reason is needed.

Menstrual changes as a vaccine side effect are on par with others like muscle pain: While uncomfortable, they do not change how safe or effective the shots are. But Clancy said unexplained side effects cause people to feel fearful — and in some cases spread vaccine hesitancy.

Some people skeptical of vaccines have falsely conflated the possibility of short-term menstrual changes with long-term harm to fertility, messaging that Lee described as an “active disinformation campaign.”

Clancy said she’s received messages from parents who’ve heard about menstruation changes and are concerned that vaccinating their child will cause early puberty, even though there is no evidence for this.

Period-related surprises post-vaccine posed particular challenges for trans men and genderqueer people, according to the study, since some had to navigate public or workplace bathrooms after experiencing unexpected menstruation.

“Unexpected bleeding runs the risk of psychological distress for those who experience gender dysphoria with menstruation and physical harm for people for whom managing menstruation in public is dangerous,” the authors wrote.

Clancy, Lee and their colleagues hope their work inspires further research, encourages clinicians to talk to patients about the link between vaccination and menstrual changes, and validates people who have felt ignored or alone in their experiences.

“If you want to improve trust in government, trust in pharmaceutical companies, trust in medicine, trust in vaccines, then you have to take the time to do the work, so people know what to expect going into it,” Clancy said. “That effort makes people more likely to get their second shot or booster.”

Health / Climate Change Could Hurt Babies' Hearts, Study Says by Cassahav: 7:39am On Jul 14, 2022
Heat and pregnancy do not mix. High temps don't just make a pregnant woman uncomfortable, the heat can actually hurt the health of her baby -- and with climate change, this will probably become a bigger problem.

A study in Wednesday's Journal of the American Heart Association found that a larger number of babies will probably be born with congenital heart defects between 2025 and 2035 due to their mothers' exposure to higher temperatures, triggered by climate change, while pregnant. This especially holds true for moms who were pregnant through spring or summer. Climate change could result in as many as 7,000 additional cases of congenital heart defects in the United States over an 11-year period, according to the study. The Midwest will probably see the biggest percent increase, followed by the South and Northeast regions of the United States.

Earlier research found that climate change could "halt and reverse" progress made in human health over the past century, but there's more limited research on the impact that has on pregnancy, the authors said. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defects and can hurt a baby's overall health and potentially impact how their body works or develops.
"The potential increases in both the number of pregnant women and maternal heat exposure suggest an alarming effect that climate change may have on reproductive health," the study said.
Researchers figured this out by looking at data collected in the the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a large multistate, population-based study that investigated risk factors for major structural birth defects. They also looked at climate data from the US government.

Based on climate data projections, the entire United States will face higher temperatures. New York, Midwest states such as Iowa and southeastern states such as Georgia and North Carolina will probably see greater temperature increases. There will be greater variation in temperature for southern states such as Texas and Arkansas and out west in states such as California in the summer months.

It's unclear what the link is between high temperatures and congenital heart problems. Animal studies found that heat can cause fetal cell death and can negatively impact the proteins that play a crucial role in fetal development.
This current research builds on earlier work that found when the temperature stays high, it can hurt a mother's chances of carrying a baby to term. Extreme heat also puts moms at risk to give birth early. Moms exposed to high heat have a bigger chance of having a baby that's small or underweight. Mothers who endure high temperatures early in their pregnancy have a much greater risk that their baby will have congenital heart problems, earlier research has found.

"Our findings underscore the alarming impact of climate change on human health and highlight the need for improved preparedness to deal the anticipated rise in a complex condition that often requires lifelong care and follow-up," said study author Dr. Shao Lin, a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Albany. "Although this study is preliminary, it would be prudent for women in the early weeks of pregnancy to avoid heat extremes similar to the advice given to persons with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease during heat spells."

The footage shows a young child hitting and cursing at police officers in St. Paul, Minnesota last week
The cops were on-site to conduct a search warrant for a murder suspect when they came across the kids
The unidentified boy punched, kicked, cursed, and threw rocks at the police
Crime in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul has soared since 2020
The Twin Cities were the epicenter of the protests and riots following the death of George Floyd in 2020
St Paul increased police funding in 2021 to counter the violence; there are now 680 sworn cops there

The footage was recorded last week while police were at a home to serve a search warrant in the hunt for a murder suspect, according to local news outlet Alpha News.

The 30-second clip shows the unnamed boy standing in the street in his underwear, barefoot, screaming: 'Shut up b***h!' at a black police officer and telling him to 'shut the f**k up!'

He then turned to the other cop and made fun of his 'ugly a** shoes', while other barefoot and barely-dressed kids stood around him.

More disturbing is the commentary in the background of the video from what sounds like an adult male who called the black police officer 'Oreo head'.

It's unclear where the child's parents were, or who the subject of the murder warrant was.

Crime in the Twin Cities soared in the wake of the 2020 unrest that followed George Floyd's killing by cops, so much so that St. Paul increased its police funding in 2021.

There are now 620 sworn officers in the city of 305,877.

The children continue to pummel the police with their tiny fists whilst the officers could be seen trying to calm them down.

The cops could be seen reaching out but the youngsters continues to lunge and hit them.

The officers all managed to show restraint against the toddlers who were easily kept at bay.

Journalist Sheila Qualls shared the story first in a column for Alpha News, where she wrote that the 'behavior of these children is eerily similar to the behaviors of rioters who burned and looted Minneapolis two years ago.'

'They cussed, berated, and struck police officers with their fists. This video is disgraceful. Heartbreaking. It is unsettling to law enforcement officers who encounter this behavior daily. It should be frightening to all of us.

'It should be embarrassing to leaders who have failed to lead a community toward virtue and morality,' Qualls wrote.

'We can do better, and we must. Let's stop playing politics with our children's lives. I do not believe this is what civil rights leaders wanted for the future of the black community.

'These children and our country deserve better.'

The number of murders in Minnesota increased an alarming 58 percent in 2020 and set a new record, after the state became the epicenter of demands to 'defund' the police in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, new data show.

In 2020, 185 people were murdered across the state, marking an all-time high and sharp increase from 117 the year before, according to the state's Uniform Crime Report.

'A large number of crimes can be a one-person crime wave, particularly in a suburban area with a relatively small population,' Chris Uggen, a professor and criminologist at the University of Minnesota told the Star Tribune.

Foreign Affairs / Anger Simmers For Dutch Farmers Who Oppose Pollution Cuts by Cassahav: 9:05am On Jul 11, 2022
MAASLAND, Netherlands (AP) — Bales of hay lie burning along Dutch highways. Supermarket shelves stand empty because distribution centers are blocked by farmers. Then, at dusk, a police officer pulls his pistol and shoots at a tractor.

Dutch farmers are embroiled in a summer of discontent that shows no sign of abating. Their target? Government plans to rein in emissions of nitrogen oxide and ammonia that they say threatens to wreck their agricultural way of life and put them out of business.

The reduction targets could radically alter the Netherlands’ lucrative agriculture sector, which is known for its intensive farming, and may also foreshadow similar reforms — and protests — in other European nations whose farmers also pump out pollutants.

That turmoil seems a long way off Friday at Jaap Zegwaard’s dairy farm, which occupies 80 hectares (200 acres) of grassland close to the port city of Rotterdam, whose chimneys and cranes form a backdrop to his fields.

Most of Zegwaard’s herd of 180 cattle, mostly black and white Holstein-Friesians, graze in meadows close to a traditional Dutch windmill and large white wind turbines. And even if the farm has been in Zegwaard’s family for five generations, some 200 years, he doesn’t know if he would recommend the farming life to his a 7-year-old daughter and 3-year-old twin boys.
Car Talk / Ford-backed Autonomous Car Startup Argo AI Lays Off 150 Employees by Cassahav: 8:20am On Jul 10, 2022
Argo AI, an autonomous vehicle startup backed by both Ford and Volkswagen, has laid off about 150 employees, as reported earlier by Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal. The move is supposed to offset a period of rapid growth, in which the company hired more employees than needed.
With incredible growth and progress made in our mission to deploy driverless vehicles, we are making prudent adjustments to our business plan to best continue on a path for success,” Argo AI said in an emailed statement obtained by Bloomberg. The Verge reached out to Argo AI with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back.

As noted by the WSJ, the layoffs make up about 6 percent of the Pittsburgh-based company’s 2,000-person team. Argo AI was founded in 2016 by Bryan Salesky, the former head of hardware development for Google’s autonomous vehicles (AVs), and Peter Rander, who previously served as an engineering lead for Uber’s self-driving branch. Ford injected $1 billion into the company in 2017, and Volkswagen followed up with a $2.6 billion investment in 2020.

This funding has allowed the company to build out its AV business in several US cities as well as overseas. Argo AI is currently in the process of testing fully autonomous vehicles in Miami and Austin and plans on partnering with Lyft in both cities. It’s also teaming up with Walmart to deploy a driverless delivery service in Miami, Austin, and Washington, D.C., and is working towards its goal of launching an automated rideshare service with Volkswagen in Germany by 2025.

Crime / Japan Makes 'online Insults' Punishable By One Year In Prison In Wake Of Reality by Cassahav: 9:55am On Jul 09, 2022
Japan's parliament on Monday passed legislation making "online insults" punishable by imprisonment amid rising public concern over cyberbullying sparked by the suicide of a reality television star who had faced social media abuse.

Under the amendment to the country's penal code -- set to take effect later this summer -- offenders convicted of online insults can be jailed for up to one year, or fined 300,000 yen (about $2,200).
It's a significant increase from the existing punishments of detention for fewer than 30 days and a fine of up to 10,000 yen ($75).
The bill proved controversial in the country, with opponents arguing it could impede free speech and criticism of those in power. However, supporters said the tougher legislation was needed to crack down on cyberbullying and online harassment.
It was only passed after a provision was added, ordering the law be re-examined three years after it goes into effect to gauge its impact on freedom of expression.
Under Japan's penal code, insults are defined as publicly demeaning someone's social standing without referring to specific facts about them or a specific action, according to a spokesperson from the Ministry of Justice. The crime is different to defamation, defined as publicly demeaning someone while pointing to specific facts.
Both are punishable under the law.
Seiho Cho, a Japan-based criminal lawyer, warned that the revised law gave no classification of what constitutes an insult.
"There needs to be a guideline that makes a distinction on what qualifies as an insult," Cho said. "For example, at the moment, even if someone calls the leader of Japan an idiot, then maybe under the revised law that could be classed as an insult."

The issue of online harassment has gained prominence in the past few years, with growing calls for anti-cyberbullying laws after the death of professional wrestler and reality television star Hana Kimura.
Kimura, 22, who was known for her role in the Netflix show "Terrace House," died by suicide in 2020. The news triggered grief and shock nationwide, with many pointing to online abuse she had received from social media users in the months leading up to her death.
