The expected appearance of the Minister of Aviation, Ms. Stella Oduah, before the Senate was botched Thursday for the third time as she blamed her inability to honour the invitation of the Committee on Aviation on the landing mishap by a Saudi Arabian cargo aircraft at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. In the same vein, the Senate’s scheduled meeting with service chiefs yesterday could not hold as a number of them were absent due to what was described as logistic reasons. The security agents were expected to brief the senators on the update on emergency rule in three North- eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa. The first expected appearance of Oduah was botched following the absence of Senate President, David Mark, on the floor of the Senate that day as Mark was billed to travel to Dubai to represent President Goodluck Jonathan at the finals of the FIFA Under-17 Championship in Dubai, the capital of United Arab Emirates. Her second awaited appearance was also botched following Senate’s decision to rescind its October 8 resolution summoning the embattled Aviation Minister to appear before the Committee of the Whole Senate to explain perceived negligence in the aviation sector which resulted in the crash of Associated Airlines’ aircraft conveying the corpse of former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, on October 3. The chamber resolved that the minister should appear before the committee instead of the whole house. Speaking on Oduah’s absence yesterday, Chairman of Aviation Committee, Senator Hope Uzodimma, said the meeting had been rescheduled for Tuesday, December 10. Also Thursday, the planned briefing of the Senate by service chiefs could not hold as the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Ihejirika Onyeabor, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, and the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, were absent over what the Senate’s spokesman, Enyinnaya Abaribe, described as “logistics.” Briefing journalists after yesterday’s plenary, Abaribe said: “The meeting didn’t go as scheduled because it was a delicate issue and heads of agencies were not available. We felt that what we were trying to get was of sufficient importance to the nation and we would not get complimentary briefing if they were not present. Therefore, we resolved to postpone the briefing to another legislative day.” http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/again-oduah-fails-to-appear-before-senate-panel-service-chiefs-too/166025/

ASUU STRIKE: ASUU Distributes Food, Money To Members https://www.nairaland.com/1543312/ASUU-strike-ASUU-distributes-food |
Striking lecturers at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on Wednesday received relief materials, including food and money to enable them to cushion the effect of the ongoing industrial action. The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of the institution, Dr. Mohammed Kabir- Aliyu, who confirmed this to one of our correspondents, said the offer would help the beneficiaries to survive the hardship occasioned by the non-payment of their salaries. According to him, lecturers in the university have not earned their salaries in the last four months. Among items distributed to the lecturers were rice, semovita, vegetable oil and cash ranging from N20, 000 to N50, 000. Kabir-Aliyu said they were ready to call the Federal Government’s bluff concerning the sack threat. University teachers nationwide embarked on strike on July 1 to force the Federal Government to honour an agreement it had with them since 2009. The Supervisory Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had last Thursday threatened the striking lecturers to return to work on or before December 4 or face dismissal. However, the resumption deadline was on Tuesday extended to December 9 to enable the striking teachers to honour Prof. Festus Iyayi, who died on his way to attend ASUU NEC meeting in Kano. As of Wednesday, there were no signs that the striking lecturers would comply with the government directives to return to the classroom on Monday. Also, the university authorities had yet to issue a circular directing students to return for lectures. Meanwhile, the National Parent- Teacher-Association of Nigeria has asked the striking teachers to see the extension of the resumption deadline as a sign of goodwill from the Federal Government. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, the NAPTAN North Central Coordinator, Alhaji Danladi Aliyu, said the extension showed that the government was committed to ending the strike. Aliyu said, “I am pleading with both parties not to see this issue as a war that must be won or lost as both are working in the interest of moving the nation forward. “ASUU should use this deadline extension to resume duties, while we also urge the Federal Government not to come down hard on them.” In a related development, Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch of ASUU has ordered its members that signed the attendance register to delete their names from the book. Also, the management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has directed its students to resume on Sunday. A statement by the Public Relations Officer of OAU, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju on Wednesday said, “The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, have announced Sunday, December 8, as the resumption date for the 2012/ 2013 rain semester. “Accordingly, students of the university are expected to come into residence on the above date as lectures will commence immediately.” http://www.punchng.com/news/strike-ASUU-distributes-food-money-to-members/ |

Missing SURE-P’s N534 Billion: Petroleum Minister Has Something To Hide – Senate https://www.nairaland.com/1541844/missing-sure-p-n534-billion-petroleum |
Nothing can happen to her. She's covered by the 'highest authority'. She has never failed to make the entourage of that 'authority' for any trip outside the country. I don't even know why, but that's the case. Ur guess might be as good as mine! |
Senate said yesterday that the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke “has something to hide” over her alleged persistent refusal to honour invitations from its Ad-Hoc Committee on the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P). This is even as there are indications that President Goodluck Jonathan may present the 2014 budget to the National Assembly tomorrow. Chairman of the committee and Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi, told newsmen yesterday that the minister has allegedly turned down three invitations to appear before the panel to explain alleged discrepancies in the N834.331 billion received from the N32 deducted in the 25 billion litres of petrol fuel sold between January 2012 and September 2013. The committee disclosed that from its investigations, only N300 billion has so far been paid out to SURE-P. At the sitting on November 5, the committee concluded that the CBN and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have a case to answer over the alleged fraud in the remittances to SURE-P. A member of the committee, Senator Kabiru Marafa, had claimed that his colleagues observed that over N834 billion ought to have accrued to the nation for the SURE – P if N32.00 was removed from the 770, 695, 645 litres of fuel sold in 21 months. He said the figure was contained in an October 9 letter from the Ministry on Petroleum Resources addressed to the committee and signed by its Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr. Salmanu Faskari. Speaking yesterday, Senator Ningi bemoaned a situation where an appointee of government would routinely shun invitations from the Senate. At the resumed sitting of the committee yesterday, Senator Ningi noted that the minister’s appearance scheduled for 1pm, was re-scheduled till 2:17 pm, hoping that she would honour the invitation. He said that no matter what it takes, the committee would ensure that the minister appears before the committee to explain how the accrued funds have been expended. His words: “This is exactly more than one and half hours after the scheduled time for the meeting. I thought we have waited patiently. “I think that the Ministry of Petroleum Resources is the custodian of the SURE-P and we feel that they have things to hide and we strongly believe that documentation that we have received from the ministry embarrasses us as a committee and it should embarrass the ministry as well because simple statistics and arithmetic is found all through their presentation. “There are various contradictions in the statistics provided and when we first sat here, we said this programme has not been run transparently enough, for Nigerians to believe that this is the programme that comes out of fewer democratic dividends. Ningi told bemused committee members that the matter had earlier been reported to Senate President David Mark who promised to take up the matter with President Goodluck Jonathan, “I, as the Chairman of this committee, cannot outrightly say that this is what will happen; neither can the committee say this is what would happen. We invited the minister severally to appear; she didn’t appear and neither did she send a representative. We took the matter to the leadership of the Senate and the leadership, in fact, the President of the Senate assured us that he would take this matter to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, who in fact, hired the minister. Meanwhile, President Jonathan is expected to present the N4.77 trillion 2014 budget to the National Assembly tomorrow. Senator Ningi disclosed this to newsmen at the meeting of the committee yesterday. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/national/missing-sure-ps-n534bn-deziani-something-hide-senate/

Lagos — Management of Associated Airlines has finally sent its two cabin crew members who were involved in its aircrash in Lagos on October 3, 2013 to South Africa for treatment. The airliner, Embraer 120, crashed close to the Murtala Muhammed Airport while conveying the remains of former governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, to Akure for burial. The two cabin crew members, Miss Toyin Samson and Mrs. Quinneth Owolabi, had been receiving treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, and Nigeria Airforce Hospital, Airforce Base, Ikeja, respectively, following injuries sustained in the crash. Vanguard gathered yesterday, that the victims were flown out of the country last Monday, even though the left toes of Mrs. Owolabi had been amputated due to gangrene infection. It was also learnt that the reason given by the airline for flying them out late was to allow them stabilise in the hospitals where they were receiving treatments. Confirming the development to Vanguard, yesterday, President of National Cabin Crew Association, NACCA, Mr. Charles Onuoha, said the association was delighted that the airline had risen to the occasion by attending to the welfare of the victims. He said the airline also picked the bills of the two ladies before moving them out of the country for further treatment. “We are happy that Associated Airlines has done the needful. Our two members who survived the crash were transferred to a South African hospital last Monday to continue their post-trauma treatment and we are monitoring their situation. The airlines sent them out because they know the insurers will pay,” Onuoha told Vanguard. He said the airlines’ management contemplated sending them to Israel for treatment before eventually settling for South Africa. On compensation for the victims, as spelt out by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, Onuoha said the airlines was in a position to pay families of passengers and crew, since the aircraft was covered by insurance. ICAO specifies payment of $100,000 compensation to families of victims of the crash. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/associated-airlines-sends-crash-crew-survivors-s-africa/ |

President Goodluck Jonathan Friday in Enugu urged religious leaders to continue to pray for Nigeria, noting however that the present security and political crisis facing the country would ultimately strengthen her. He expressed optimism in the unity and survival of the country, stressing that as a leader, he would not be deterred by the challenges. Speaking at Umuida, Enugu Ezike, Enugu state at the funeral of Mrs Paulina Eze, mother of Senator Ayogu Eze, President Jonathan said there was nothing unusual about the problems in the country, saying that "every country in the world has crises and challenges". "The world is facing crises including Nigeria. These days once you hear breaking news, its all about crises. I urge clergymen to continue to pray for the country. The nation has challenges no doubt about that, in the world there are challenges everywhere. When you open the television, they will always talk about crises here and there, there is always breaking news and whenever you hear this breaking news, it is never a good news”. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/jonathan-political-security-problems-will-strengthen-nigeria/165523/
