prof800: Please can there be late submissions.?
How many hours can you give sir.?
@jjk24 where is your final render (full image)?
PLUS;
blueblack, shimish, ladanski, tmebaanne, chuksxy where are your final renders?
Nah! It's been almost 4 weeks for the duration.I'm in the process of compiling on the submissions and presenting to the judges

I would like to congratulate everyone that participated in the challenge. It wasn't easy at all, but kudos to everyone that still delivered
Some of expressed the challenges they faced creating the model but still managed to produce something in the end regardless.
All complaints will be considered when deciding the next modelling challenge ( no anytime soon though)
Any further suggestions to make the whole thing better next time are welcomed.

In the end, the idea of the whole thing is to provide a platform for learning and improving, so whatever subject chosen should always provide a reasonable challenge.

@spywareczar
Wow, not easy using a mouse to sculpt. Very decent result regardless.

Still a few more days before the deadline.

Kudos to all the participants so far

spywareczar: i have zbrush 4R6 though, dont know my way around it, present downloading some basic tuts
Since you sculpt already in C4D, getting into Zbrush shouldn't be too difficult, I think.
I've had a lot of Zbrush tuts for years now, but I only started sculpting this year when I finally got a Wacom Intuos.

Btw, do u guys use a tablet to sculpt in blender/C4D?
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 11:42am On Aug 12, 2014
Tos87: ...hmm i stil beleive ma blender guys can do better.
I'm not doubting the blender users, but judging from the competition so far, Zbrush is just superior when it comes to sculpting
Another method would be to use displacement maps like OKX suggested
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 10:12am On Aug 12, 2014
kazuna: GUys i am givin up....this model is way too repetitive and almost a bore.....not to talk of the polygons it is eating off my mistress.....
WILL WAIT FOR THE ANIMATION.
spywareczar: Over 3million polygons , So far my system hangs lyk 4 times already cry had to forcefully shut it down with d power button, I think I'll just do it anyhow and submit, coz if I should subdivided the model again, it'll slow my system and it'll be hanging every damn minute
My apologies! smiley I just assumed any software that has sculpting features ( modo, Blender,c4d) is optimized to handle very high polygon count.
Seems Zbrush is very unique.
It's still just 32bits and it handles high polycounts better than other 64bit softwares.
It also doesn't need a high-end graphics card to run, unlike Mudbox.

I advice everyone to check out Zbrush

@eyeaye , Gr8 stuff .
The way things are going , the only winners will be the ones complete the challenge undecided
HealthRe: I Started The Saltwater Ebola Cure Rumor I Truely Am Sorry by cgniyi(m): 10:41am On Aug 08, 2014
DRealGeesam1: My confession and apology

Dear nairalanders and everyone who have heard of the ebola Prevention "News", My name is Adesewa, I am coming out clean because what started has a joke has escalated into the unprecedented.
How it started
Yesterday i was with friend in her hostel, we were talking about this Ebola out break, when one of my friends, Funke (she introduced me to nairaland) brought the idea of Us playing a prank on our friends. The first suggestion was to tell people that aloe very could cure Ebola, but we thought it would sound too ridiculous so we forgot about it.

Later that even an idea came to me (i now regret that i did it).
I decided to send a BBM broadcast message to my friends, telling them that the Ministry of Health has asked everyone to bathe with salt and warm water and drink some of it.
I sent the message 7:08pm yesterday

Later this midnight i started getting calls and messages that i should drink salt water and bath with it.

All efforts to tell people that i was the one who started the joke failed. Only my friends who i mentioned earlier believed me. Even my mum could me this morning, i did not know what to tell her.

I am using this medium to beg you all to warn and tell everyone, before they drink salt and damage their health.

Please dont be hash on me. I know this has gone out of hand. I never knew it will be this serious. Some have even added to the original message i sent.
I find it funny actually. My mum first informed me this morning. Also received a text from a friend.
The first thing that came to my mind is that this is obviously a rumor.
I even thought about starting a rumor myself - urinate in bath water to prevent ebola spread.
But i gave myself brain sharply. That would actually have caused more harm.
I was offended by the fact that anyone would believe the salt and water thing in the first place.
In this day and age of information technology, ppl still fall for these kinds of story, smh
Whether u started the rumor or not, one should take time to confirm any story they receive. What do we have internet and google for?

Probably shouldn't detail the base form so much since I'll be covering it with the rock layer.
12:13am, think I'll sleep now

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 11:16pm On Aug 04, 2014
Adjusted the proportions, tried to make the pose more dynamic

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 10:44pm On Aug 04, 2014
I'm also going with Zbrush on this one.Only started this night.
So far, I've used a very common sculpting workflow. Similar to what eyeaye is doing
- Zpheres used to build basic form and pose
- Change zpheres to polygons
- Using Move brush to further adjust the form
Still looks messed up for now

Just want get the base form first, then I'll extract thr rock layer from this

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 10:35pm On Aug 04, 2014
2 more weeks to go.
I only just found time to start work on mine and i was thinking to myself, "who's the idiott that came up with this idea" huh

Just a reminder, I'm forgoing the prize money, but I'll still be posting my work.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 7:40am On Aug 01, 2014
jjk24: U guys wnt kill us.. Well dis is wah i hve ooo nt touched ma system in days had to prepare for dis exam ehn buh still no complaints , praying am able to geh it dne shaa.. #offscreen capture
U'll survive smiley Great work so far.
There are many ways to go about this model. Seems you've chosen to scatter separate rock models around a base models.
BTW, which software are you using? Use screen grab/save screenshot option instead

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 7:26am On Aug 01, 2014
eyeaye: Um i'd like to update my entry and include photoshop with the zbrush, i'll use if for finishing touches. Below are my WIP, still sculpting XD
Great stuff!
Zbrush would also be my number 1 choice for this kind of work.

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 4:23pm On Jul 31, 2014
The design was something I thought everyone would be excited about! undecided

Anyways, hope I can come up with something tonight.
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 4:15pm On Jul 31, 2014
spywareczar: lol, actually, creating that lava man is not an issue, I didn't withdraw from d competition coz I don't know how to go about creating the character but bcoz I was disappointed, not what I was expecting, you should hve brought something fresh and interesting, grin
To the participants: oya don't be shy to post your wips na haha, had to launch cinema 4D and create a lil something this morning, here is it, I know it doesn't look good grin , its just somethin to make u guys start post ur awesome WIPs grin
That's what I'm talking bout!

Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 10:22am On Jul 31, 2014
Three weeks to go.

Wow, it's very lively in here cheesy

I haven't been active for a while, but I occasionally check the thread to see if there's any progress.
So far, the complaints about system specs, I'm actually surprised. I just assumed based on the some of works posted already this wouldn't be an issue.

ladanski: Also waiting to see WIPs. If I dont see anything within a few days, I might pull out of the competition.
I feel you should post a WIP instead, this might just be the motivation for everyone else.

Tos87: the art is cool...i dont know about other participants, but i sure need the front, side and back view of that image.
Shimish: nice. but will need more details on the head and hands. like a close up on the face and the back of the hand opened up
The idea is to recreate the 2d piece, just the the character the way it's posed in the artwork, in 3d.
No need to work on angles that are not in the artwork.

You don't need to recreate the exact same thing or try to model every piece of rock the exact same way it is in the artwork, but your work has to still closely resemble the 2d work

Tos87: I no fit shout!.. :8 :8 ... Where d heck did u get this pic from? And how do i get the 3D ref. Image to start wit.? game is on!
It's by a friend, one of the best comic artist I know.
Trust me, he has even crazier stuffs smiley

I don't know if the resolution is high enough, I'll try uploading the original res
Art, Graphics & VideoRe: 3d Modelling Challenge : Lava Man by cgniyi(op): 9:54pm On Jul 20, 2014
OKX: Normally to balance the challenge across different system specs, a poly limit would have been introduced.
@cg
wot say ye? say, 10000 faces. Dats kinda generous.
@OKX
Naaah! Unless it's a game asset contest no need to impose a limit on polygon count.

I see some of us handling scenes complete with rigged ,animated characters and environment, textured and lit ,I don't see this posing of much of a challenge for your specs.
Besides most softwares today are optimized to handle very complex scenes.
Even free Blender allows for sculpting with millions of polygons

@Chuksxy, true, a digital sculpting app might be the best route.
