I think this is the best time to up-skill.The market is overheated and getting a job now may require some level of ''sophisticated connection.''Why waiting for the economy to bounce back it is better to get more education/training in order to stand a better chance as the economy fully recovers.

I got the test invite but unfortunately I am not in Nigeria right now.I don't just know what to do.I wrote the dragnet test last yr it was basically SHL.It wasn't that difficult.

Just yesterday the senate council of OAU had a meeting with 'short Fab' 4 making such lugubrious decision by shutting the school and suspending the SUG. Can u imagine? that stubborn 4ft Ekiti had 2 walk away from d meeting. Not only did he did that but also sealed and weld the SUB .As I speak, Fj and Mandela the SUG presi and gen sec respectively had been arrested. Fab also threatened to call us back by september. All part 1 students' admission has been put on hold 4 now. U can confirm this by assessing your a/c in eportal. It will tell u that 'sorry u're not a student.

Nigeria right now cannot beat China at manufacturing cars. But building a factory that supplies a single component for a car (e.g., tires)? Well, do that well, make sure the plant is supplied with natural gas/rubber/etc so that you can produce at competitive prices, and you can probably steal the Chinese tire business in Nigeria and all of West Africa. Once you secure that business, you move into other components of the car. Until one day you manufacture (at competitive prices) all the components of a car.

Anyone who is seriously suggesting that Nigeria should spend enormous amounts of resources patronizing car manufacturers without ensuring that one of the inputs to said car (electricity) is available at reasonable prices simply doesn't have a clue what is going on.

Otoh, if government policy will allow massive subsidies to companies who aren't otherwise economically viable. . . well, I too can start an economically unviable business, and thus demand to be propped up by the government  Grin

Elementary Economics should have exposed us to the law of comparative advantage as propounded by David Ricardo.Why encouraging local industries i support that the government should import that which is relatively cheaper to produce in other countries especially a capital intensive industry like the automobile.

I wonder how many years it would take our local manufacturers to produce 550 buses and what would eventually happen to our people before then.Some of us would have been dead by then.

This is what is required in this thread not proffering solutions. To me its quite frustrating after finishing school and raising the hope of the family,suddenly the hope becomes dashed because of lack of job.You often find it difficult to afford the basic things of life and may be ashamed in most cases to go back to your family for financial assistance.A friend of mine who has a 2.1 degree in Economics was forced to take up a security job(gate man for that matter) after searching for job for a long time.

Well,i don't know the direction of your question.Do you mean opportunities currently available for IB professionals in Nigeria or future career directions in the IB industry?If you mean the later,I am currently not yet into the IB industry but think that there will be expanding opportunities in the area of Risk Mgt and assessment,Pensions adm,Regulatory activities etc.This requires further training and knowledge,for instance some organisations won't even in most cases consider your application if you have no postgraduate qualification e.g ARM etc.A friend of mine applied to SEC young professionals program but was not shortlisted because he has no pg qualification, this was what he told me.

Young job seekers are therefore confuse as in the requirements of these organizations,is it work experience,pg qualification,professional qua,grade or attending some expensive elite uni that these employers actually want? I still think rather than sitting at home doing nothing one should try an acquire more training and knowledge,it will be useful one day.

What is he doing at the moment? 2 years in a bank doing what? Where is he hoping the MBA would take him?

He wants to leave the banking industry and move to a more managerial focused firm.Also he wishes to return after his studies and search for a job in the manufacturing sector like dangote etc or in other financial firms other than banks. He was a customer relations officer in one of the new generation banks.

Sorry, even though your question was meant for Sagamite, I'll contribute some early comments.
If your friend doesn't have a specific objective for the MBA, he should forget it for now. I think we're slowly moving back to the era where work experience may be more valuable than an MBA. Most people (especially Nigerians) see the MBA as some kind of leverage to get a high-paying job; I fear that [b]leverage may not exist any more as many of the [b]high-paying sectors are still in some sort of meltdown right now[/b][/b].

I think this is actually the best time to upgrade one's skills and knowledge.The economy is recovering from a meltdown and those who seize the opportunity to acquire more skills and knowledge will stand to gain when the economy finally recovers.This is because there will be an explosion of new challenging opportunities requiring robust knowledge and training.

Even if your g.p is 4.5 in year one, people like Dr. Anigbogu, Oladipo and Dr. Obi okonkwo of computer sci. Nnamdi Azikiwe uni. Awka, will make sure u dn't graduate wit 1st class. If u doubt me try dat schl.

Please don't give our younger ones this shit. If you worth a 1st class it will be given to you.@op just work hard,don't read only during exams,start from the beginning of the semester to prepare for your exams.Read to acquire knowledge not to pass exams.Go to the bookshop or the school library and get good books in your field.With this,you will not only make a 1st class but also you will be knowledgeable.

Is the school worth the stress?Also,he can't really afford the fee for the top 20 uni in the uk.

I am not really that super-intelligent even though i made a 2.1 in Economics.My decision to go for my MBA wasn't necessarily to take up mgt positions.I needed to understand how the business world works.I intend enrolling for the CFA program against December. I really need to know how to work with spreadsheets.Is it something i can learn on my own?I learnt one could get into the IB industry with an MBA,how true is that?

Is the CFA,ICAN,ACCA etc valued more than the MBA(Finance) in the IB market?

I have not really worked with spreadsheets,will i be trained on the job for this or do i need to undergo some private tutorials?

This is the most senseless comment in NL.People make university choices base on so many factors not on JAMB score alone.I v people who had very low scores in JAMB yet they went to IFE,UI,UNILAG and there r others who had very high scores and yet attended state uni. In my case,i had a good score but my parents insisted i stud in my state uni just to be closer to home. Its highly competitive to secure admission in any Nigerian university,be it federal or state.
I had 7Bs,270,2.1,and yet attended a state university,do u consider this average in your analysis?Everybody must not attend federal uni or the so called ''top'' schools. With my state uni i secured admission in one of the top schools in the world, so fu uuu cc k ur Nigerian ''top'' school.

I always admire your depth of of analysis on every topical issue,I therefore feel humbled responding to this post of yours.You see,MBAs are good and will always remain good inasmuch as organisations strive to have a competitive edge in the modern dynamic business world.MBAs are designed to train managers who think and act strategically.MBAs will not only teach you how to do your work but also how to do it well for the overall growth of the organisation.The value of an MBA is dependent on the purpose for which it is acquired.Some go for it just for the name,others contact/connection and a handful acquire it because of the opportunity it provides to interact,share and learn new ways of handling workplace related task.
For instance,immediately i finished my nysc i went directly for my MBA, and guess what?i see myself being able to function effectively in any department,organisation or any human endeavor i find myself even with little or no work experience .I now have self confidence,understands and appreciates the contributions of every individual in the organisation and above all,think strategically.

I am the 8th child in a nuclear family of 9.I moved out of my family house at 11,stayed with an uncle till 15,lived in the school till 17,traveled to Lagos on my own at 18,lived with a friend till 20,moved to the university at 21,did nysc at 26,traveled abroad for my masters at 26 and am still on my own till date. I still don't know the kind of family i found myself.Nobody seems to care about the other person.Could you imagine,i have been away for the past months and yet nobody knows where i am and no one bothers to know either and my parents are still alive.There is no quarrels in the house,if my parents see you they will thank God,if they don't they will assume are are fine wherever you may be.

I can always get my British certificate from Malaysia or Singapore even at a lower cost because there are so many UK universities there .What will I be going to the UK to do? Everybody Uk,Uk!! University of Nottingham,University of Derby,University of Sunderland,Oxford Brooks etc all these schools are in Malaysia,Singapore and even S.Africa.You don't need to go to the Uk anymore for these certificates. For instance,accommodation in Malaysia is about $150 per month,tuition fee which people pay as high as 21,000 pounds per yr in the uk is only but 8,000-11,000 USD in Malaysia,Singapore or even S.Africa and at the end of the day you are issued the same certificate,and might even be more knowledgeable than someone who attended the main campus in the UK.

Also,i think its high time we started encouraging these universities to start opening up campuses in Nigeria,since our country is among the highest ''exporter'' of international students to the uk.Doing so,to my knowledge,will reduce cost both for the school,students and their parents, and maybe upon graduation they could go to the uk for their convocation ceremony.

This bad rush to the uk is becoming worrisome.

The sooner we shed our bigotry the better for us as Nigerians, till we learn to tolerate ourselves and appreciate our diversity we would always remain in the schackles of under development.
