THE HEN OR THE EGG, WHICH COMES FIRST?

A good system should have in-built controls to ensure its output meets the required standards.

Question: If we succed in eliminating corruption (which is very unrealistic) but retain our current system (policies, procedures, controls and structures), will our education sector suddenly be able to cater for the education needs of the populace?

So what is wrong with 6 3 3 4 ? My school moved because water took over our school and we had to be squatting all over the place, despite these challenges, I made straight As in my SSCE, we had good teachers and I was a very serious student.

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday adduced reason he did not participate in the presidential debate organised by the NN24, a channel on DSTV. The debate held, in Abuja yesterday.
In a statement by the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation, signed by Mr. Ide Eguabor, director of media/publicity, the president said that he opted out of the debate because he had accepted to attend the one organized by the Nigerian Election Debate Group (NEDG), an amalgamation of the Nigeria’s mass media, the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), the Nigeria Bar Association, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), market women and other civil society groups, which has been organising the presidential debate series since 1999.

The campaign organization said that with what the NEDG has done, over the years, in organizing presidential debate, it “does not believe that this relevant and credible body, made up of Nigerians and who will moderate a presidential debate watched by Nigerians on all television and radio stations nationwide should be jettisoned for any other one on the eve of crucial national elections.”

While expressing regrets that he could not attend the NN24 presidential debate, the group said that Jonathan, “who has a carefully drawn out schedule leading up to the elections will not be able to cancel any of his appointments now to attend to a debate that is only the result of a fresh application.”
The statement said: “The Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation has watched with utter consternation, efforts by some individuals and groups to feed the Nigerian public with inaccurate and distorted information to suit their selfish ends.

“A presidential debate to be organised by the management of NN24, a subscriber to Multichoice’s DSTV cable, is deliberately being heated up by those who now see what the president will do or will not do as an opportunity for political capital.
“The truth of the matter is that several applications from various groups, including that of NN24, have reached the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation seeking to organise the presidential debate, preparatory to the April general elections.

“The campaign organization sent its officials to sit as observers at some of the meetings called to deliberate on modalities. However, after a thorough examination of the reports of its observers to these meetings, a collective decision was taken to retain the body that had organized presidential debates since 1999 and has performed creditably well and so, saw no need to discard the platform and template for another.

“The fact is that, the Nigerian Election Debate Group (NEDG), organisers of the presidential debate series, is an amalgamation of the Nigeria’s mass media, print and electronic, the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), the Nigeria Bar Association, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), market women and other civil society groups.
“The Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation does not believe that this relevant and credible body, made up of Nigerians and who will moderate a presidential debate watched by Nigerians on all television and radio stations nationwide should be jettisoned for any other on the eve of crucial national elections.

“Having only just concluded his tour of the 36 states of Nigeria, President Jonathan has a hectic schedule ahead before the grand finale of the state campaigns at Abuja on March 26, 2011.
“The Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation regrets that President Goodluck Jonathan will unavoidably be unable to attend the debate organised by NN24.

There is no problem with the system, it is the people that have issues, my school moved from its location more than 6 times, yet, we still had a good secondary school education because our teachers were dedicated.

If true, GEJ must have received the questions in advance. GEJ is so clueless about the issues bedviling this country.

From my experience, US is easier than Nigeria. I am not sure of graduate school in Nigeria. I left Nigeria in 1998 after so many strikes. I was in the 400 levels and president of student union. I had to start all over after I waited for two years and the school refused to send my transcript. A payback for my union activities. It wasn't a total lose as I was able to enroll in computer science. I study business admin in Nigeria because I did not meet the cut off point for Computer science. "Cut off point", another dream killer in Nigeria. Thanks to America my wife is able to become a lawyer. She was unable to meet cut off point for law and end up studying history in Nigeria,came to US and went to law school here
I notice that most professors here actually teach you and want you to know what they are teaching you especially in science and math. In Nigeria most of the lecturers are just proving their knowledge of the subject but fail to passing on the knowledge. If you are the type that wanted to know why x+y is XY and not just because the professor said so, you will find things to be very hard in Nigeria. The availability of reading material is also a great advantage. If you are intellectually curious, the resources are here to meet your need.
The major setback in America is that you have to combine work and study. That can be very stressful.
I don't know if things have changed in Nigeria as of today. One of the reason I am reluctant to relocate back home is the education of my children. i don't want them to go through the stress i went through in Nigeria. In my day, getting JAMB form is a hurdle then the cut off point hurdle. in America you seat for SAT and you use the result to apply for as many school as you want. you can study the course of your dream. There is no 1st choice, second choice restriction

Because of people like you I hope GEJ wins so your misery can continue. Have u ever been in a place where the electricity never went out, not even once, in 50 yrs? Where most crimes were solved? Where the Govt. was accountable to, and served, You? Where the Justice System worked? etc

I cant imagine how anyone would advocate living in Nigeria as you guys describe its current condition, to talk of hoping to have the same hopeless situation for at least another 4 yrs! Dude, go on Youtube and see how normal societies are run; YOU LIVE IN A JUNGLE AND SEEM TO BE HAPPY ABOUT IT!!! If I had to live in Nigeria, chaotic as you guys describe it, trust, I'd rather be dead.

A place where everyone requests a bribe before carrying out tasks which they are constitutionally inclined to? Cops, Doctors, everyone, all corrupt and you wanna vote GEJ in, why again?

Homie, instead of going of your own free will to mortgage your future and that of others, why dont you (on election day) just stay home and watch soccer or something (if theres electricity); or burn your voter's card now instead of dragging others with you on your journey of impending doom?

GEJ is president by default and all people are questioning are his last 13 months, thats all they are asking,  (nothing wrong with that)

Hi Steve, you are doing a good job, you wunt believe it I planned starting a thread here with the title "Nigerians in Malaysia, share your experience" before I saw yours and decided to read thru. Actually, I am thinking of going there for a Masters degree in any institution affiliated with a UK or US university since my CGPA is dulling me for the Masters in Canada. Please, can u help with such schools that ve Masters Program in Biochemistry related course or Public Health. The tuition is not a problem so far it is not more than $3000 a the standard of education is world class and most importantly if schooling there is devoid of victimization ( I mean if I am serious can I be assured of making a Ph.D grade) and then use it to secure admission for the Ph.D in North America. Thanks waiting for a meaningful contribution.
