The remote parts of the vast Mandara Mountains is believed to host thousands of Boko Haram fighters. The mountain is about 125 miles along the northern part of the Cameroon - Nigeria border. The major towns within the mountain are Mokolo and Mara in Cameroon and mainly Mubi in Nigeria, where the insurgents still rely on for their food and medical supplies.

The widely reported headquarters of the insurgents is Gwoza town and the Gwoza mountain. Several clusters of villages in Gwoza Local Government Areas, about 135 kilometres South-East of the city of Maiduguri remains a snug hideout for Boko Haram members. Also, not far from Gwoza between Mbulakudige village in Askira and some villages in Hong in Adamawa State are constantly under siege.

Another important town Banki, is in the hands of the insurgents. Kala Balge, a unique farming community and snake colony, is also controlled by Boko Haram and a lot of other clusters of settlements and villages between Kala Balge and Banki.

Gamboru Ngala and Dikwa are almost deserted because of persistent and unhindered attacks. Note, it is difficult to storm Damasak without passing through Malamfatori, where Soldiers from Niger Republic said the insurgents are regrouping and apparently the location scores of recently abducted persons are being held. An explanation to this could be that the insurgents turned into mobile band of fighters that withdraw just before an attack and return ofttimes to attack.

For example, apart from the main town of Bama which still comes under repeated attack, large areas in Bama Local Government is still being controlled by the insurgents and life there is short and brutal to the inhabitants.

Boko Haram insurgents have heavy presence in villages around Chibok, large parts of Askira and many villages in Damboa like Alagarno. The 86 kilometer road from Damboa to Maiduguri has been closed for about a year now. Residents in Biu can only travel to Maiduguri by traveling opposite direction to Gombe State. Boko Haram have free reign along Biu to Buniyard up to Damaturu road for over a year, several communities there live in constant dread.

The trend in the last 6 weeks, where there is a heighten military operation is, many towns or Local Government headquarters are retaken while surrounding villagers are living in peril. Another worrying development is the important Maiduguri, Damaturu highway, especially Benesheik area where people hold their breath when commuting. Several areas like the commercial village of Ngamdu, many more villages in particular witness unreported assassinations and attacks almost daily.

The above horrific status is even better than the pre-2015 scenario, thanks to the efforts of men of the Arm Forces and the Multi-National Joint Task Force that have sacrificed so much to bring some respite to the residents in the Northeast region.

Nigerians should not make that mistake because a vote for Buhari is a vote to send people to Prison.
