Wasn't it this same kerosene that we paid $5 billion as subsidy for a 50 Naira per liter rate? (http://businessdayonline.com/2014/08/fg-fritters-away-4-43-billion-on-unconstitutional-kerosene-subsidy/#.VL0tdIF4WrU) Is the government acknowledging kerosene isn't being sold at 50 naira and subsidy is still being claimed? Who is collecting the subsidy? How is this 50 naira different from the former 50 naira.

This was Shagari' s doing. Please there is sort a thing as whiplash effect in economics. If you mess up education during Abacha regime for instance, the effect will be felt by employers and the unemployed themselves during Obasanjo regime. What you saw in that headline actually justifies Buhari's staunch defence of the Naira and import restrictions. By the eleventh month, things had stabilized. I remember sitting in front of a friend of my dad's 2b
who was proudly going to set up a ceramics manufacturing company at that same period and was thanking the government for high import tariffs that were going to save his new business.
I think Buhari, Shonekan and later Abacha (for all his faults) were governments that were very protective of local small scale manufacturing. Obj and Jona were more protective of the Dangote's of this world.

Politics / Re: For Those Who Say Gej's Government Is Too Corrupt. by chemali: 7:10pm On Jan 12, 2015
J12:
I know that 90 percent of nairalanders don't read anything that's more than three sentences long. Here are the key highlights

1. The latest 2014 TI ranking places Nigeria 39 steps ahead of others. This compares with Nigeria’s status as the most corrupt nation on earth in 1996, the second worst at the inception of the present democratic dispensation in 1999 and again in 2002. So, since 1999, we have progressed up the corruption perception ladder skipping on average close to three countries each passing year till date.

2. in the 2014 TI report, Nigeria had the highest perception record it has ever had since 1999. Nigeria’s best corruption perception scores so far were achieved first in 2008 under the presidency of Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and repeated in 2012 and 2014 under President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

3. illicit flows from Nigeria have been on steady decline from US$26 billion in 2009 to less than US$8 billion in 2012 – a fall of close to 70 per cent in three straight years under the oversight of the present federal leadership. While Nigeria’s illicit outflows thus fell, those from “all developing countries” still rose from US$748.3 billion in 2009 to US$991.2 billion in 2012, up 33 per cent.

4. The improvements recorded in Nigeria are the culmination of various much less costly, silently executed, preventive anti-corruption initiatives of the Federal Government over this period, led by an unsung transformation team of Nigeria’s best and brightest. They focus more on preventive strategies and building preventive and defensive institutions.

Throw the article into the bin as it contains a big lie. Corruption perception index in 2014 is 136. Corruption perception index in 2009 is 130. Which one is lower? How is 2014 the lowest?

Politics / Why Is Diesel Retailing For 155 Naira by chemali: 8:34am On Jan 09, 2015
Let's assume for a second that the price of petrol can't be brought down because it is being regulated and removing subsidy now may bring confusion in future when oil prices rise.

As far as I know, diesel is fully deregulated. Why is it retailing for 155 Naira. Even the recommended retail price on PPPRA website is 111naira. How come this is not reflected in the pump price. Is this the government we want to trust to deregulate the petrol prices? A government that claims subsidy on kerosene but doesn't sell that kerosene at 50naira.

The organisations that used to score us very low on corruption in the past, like Transparency International, now say we are improving. TI rated us eight places BETTER from 144th position in 2013 to 136th in 2014. Obviously Jonathan's SYSTEMATIC fight against corruption is yielding PROGRESSive results.
The fact that dead, decaying infrastructures like railways are being revived and roads repaired & expanded with new bridges being built also shows that corruption has REDUCED systematically. Unlike previous federal administrations that budgeted annually, launched severally and did NOTHING! shocked

If you want to start with TI, why don't you do a year by year comparison from 2009 and see how it worsened under Jonathan. You pick a year's data for someone with 6 years of governance and say he is fighting corruption systematically. I would rather believe other countries just got more corrupt. No fight has taken place.

Politics / Re: How Obasanjo’s Report Indicted Buhari In 1999 by chemali: 6:57am On Jan 07, 2015
Obasanjo contested against Buhari in 2003, this report did not surface even though the election was rigged. In 2007, Buhari contested against an OBJ candidate, same for 2011 and this report did not exist. 2 years ago, a pro GEJ website came up with this report and called it exclusive. In 2015, one Ojo Maduekwe in thisday "obtained" this report and called it exclusive. What does this show?
There is a high likelihood that this report was concocted to tarnish Buhari's image based on tabloid gossip available at that time like the $2.8billion claim that was found to be baseless. Why would thisday claim exclusivity to junk that has been on the Internet for more than two years save to propagate the lies in the public sphere.

Again, with everythn you have said since it shows ur confidence on Buhari is not really firm, all u want is just a change of party...
Question you should ask ursef is that? 'Does all of these really gurantee a good govErnance?'

You have a choice between Jonathan and Buhari. Despite the controversies surrounding Buhari, he is the better option. I'm not going to sit on the fence and say they are both not what we deserve. Sitting on the fence is supporting Jonathan. You can't know for sure how a candidate will perform. Jonathan despite evidences to the contrary was supported over Buhari in 2011 and he has messed up. In 2015, it will be foolhardy to cast a similar vote because you don't know what Buhari will do. I won't attempt to sell Buhari to you but will try to appeal to your common sense. Is it sensible following Jonathan because you don't know what Buhari will do? Did you know for certain what Jonathan was going to do?

To me there is no President in GEJ and Buhari,

Gej government has been full of imcompetencies and lack of interest for people well being, his supporters has been trying to convince us that he has done so many things and sacrifice for NigErians (Am sure people like me who could see beyond all this things will know that these are just cock and bull story because the only thing he has sacrificed are people's life)

And Buhari on the other hand is like an Angel We don't know...
There has been evidence surrounding this man to make GEJ government ungovernable and alrdy we have seen so much of it..
Trust me Buhari has nothing to offer Nigerians...

None of this Candidate is good for this Job...
I just hope people campaigning for this candidates would realise soon enough that temporary benefits is no good and pray they won't reap the Negative effect themselves, because whatever decision you make now will affect you and your unborn children..

Our fathers and mothers has been making this mistake in the past, just look at where we are now...
As for me and my household, Nigeria will be some vote short unless proper candidate emerge from either of this party

God bless Nigeria

Where is the evidence you are alluding to? Save for concocted stories on TANoid websites. GMB has more character and integrity that GEJ. The APC Governors have consistently delivered. Now, it's Buhari has nothing to offer like you are a clairvoyant.

Politics / Re: 'When It Comes To Corruption During My Government, I Was A Saint' — IBB by chemali: 7:42am On Jan 06, 2015
Even IBB has deserted Jonathan.

Alhaji Hassan Jallo, a close associate of former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, has denied the claim that Babangida endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of next month’s presidential election.

According to him, what Babangida and Jonathan discussed were “security issues and the unity of Nigeria”.

Jallo added that the former military president promised to support Jonathan in that direction, insisting that it did not mean that Babangida endorsed Jonathan for re-election.

Jallo, who addressed reporters in Kaduna on the issue yesterday, said: “I am saying this on behalf of IBB. So, don’t expect him to descend very low to come out himself and debunk this so-called endorsement of President Jonathan. I am saying this for him, and I believe the endorsement is the creation of the media.”

Confirming that he was not at the meeting, he explained that available information showed that Jonathan was only there to consult with Babangida on the challenges facing the nation and the way forward.

Jallo said issues relating to endorsement or 2015 elections were not part of discussions, stressing that Babangida has not endorsed any of the presidential candidates.

He maintained that the former military president “is a strong member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)”.

According to him, the former head of state’s statement was misinterpreted for Jonathan’s endorsement in the general elections.

“President Jonathan is not the first to visit the former head of state. Other presidential aspirants and leaders have paid him visit, regardless of their political parties for one consultation or the other.

“I want you to quote me very well that IBB has not endorsed Jonathan or any other presidential candidate for the 2015 presidential race.

“Jonathan requested to visit him. And he couldn’t have turned down a president’s request as an elder statesman. There is no man like IBB in Nigeria of today. I therefore urge media men to express professionalism in their reportage to avoid misleading the public,” he said.

Now juxtapose the eu members and nigeria.

Most EU members have a multi faceted economy and thrive in all sectors.
have a less corrupt civil service and accurate statistics for budgeting.

Have successfully implemented various subsidy programs without rattling the economy. Etc etc etc

Now look at ur country....
Its monolithic and is on the verge of loosing its major source of revenue, the oil wells are still same we've fed off since the 70s. Its depleting rapidly.

Your govt has failed woefully in implementing all subsidy programs eg petroleum, power, water, health, courier!!!! It goes on and on. Thanks to federal xter n quota systems the civil service is irredeemable. Now in our grounded situation and inability in funding recurrent expenditure, ure welcomn more subsidies. I mean uve nt realised it always ends up in the wrong benefactors pockets to the detriment of our economy.

Please also go and read up why GREECE died .
And if you read my earlier post, you will realize it's a whole package. You can't provide subsidies in a climate of corruption. You can't provide social protection without growing the tax base and growing the tax base involves stimulating the economy and investing in infrastructure.

Why are they speaking from both sides of their mouth?

He said Nigerians should know that a presidential campaign is money-spinning in Nigeria.

Oladipo said, “Comments are free. But Nigerians should know that elections and campaigns are money-spinning; they cost money.

“But let me add that as long as the fund-raising we did was and is still within the armpit of the law, then we have not breached any law.

“What we did was legitimate. We didn’t force anyone to donate at all.

Lmao... You are silly. If you can read and your brain has capacity to process information, what does the below excerpt from a research on social protection mean?

Social protection, in particular unemployment benefits, minimum income support and progressive taxation, have significantly contributed to reducing the depth and the duration of the current recession in EU Member States and to stabilising labour markets and consumption. Not only does social protection provide a safety net for those groups which have been hit hardest by the crisis, it has also a stabilising effect on the overall demand for goods and services produced in the economy. Discretionary action in the field of social and labour market policy, pursued in most European economies, included a broad range of measures, such as employment incentives, higher benefits and increased transfers to low-income households. Further action, however, is needed to overcome inequalities in access to social protection faced by non- standard workers, and in designing a suitable exit strategy from discretionary stimulus in order to limit the fiscal constraints generated by anti-crisis policies.

He has been accused of being on the payroll of Buhari/APC. He is now being accused on throwing a tantrum because the First Lady was hard to reach. I do not know why he changed his mind. Irrespective, the facts remain - this administration has not shown leadership in fighting corruption, few have been enriched to the detriment of the many and poverty is on the rise and would rise in this time of austerity despite high oil prices over the past 4 years
