There are certain factors that mitigate against the economic development of Nigeria but these are actually more of failures of Leadership at ALL levels rather than deliberate conspiracy against a particular Geopolitical zone.

1) The Federal Military Government of the past years slower the progress of Nigeria down by getting involved in business enterprises and limiting the participations of Nigerians in such enterprises.

2) However, the FG can't dictate for market forces for long.


The FG can't improve the economy of a State for long.Only the market forces can do that.
For instance, for almost 30 years that the Federal Capital has been moved to Abuja, the city is still not a commercial city despite that ALL the Federal Ministries, Embassies, International Airport, Universities and the Head-quaters of many companies (including banks) are located in Abuja.


3) There were several attempts by the FG in the past to force maritime traffic to Onne, Calabar and Sapele ports but it backfired (similar to the attempts by the Federal Military Government (FMG) to fix prices of certain commodities)

In 1978, my father's container was forcely diverted from Apapa port to Sapele Port.

He went by road to Sapele, booked and slept in a Hotel there for days, cleared his goods and headed to Lagos to sell his goods at increased prices.
