I don't agree with your assertion about Milan lacking quality in key areas as you put it.
They are decent enough to be second enough in Serie A.How did they get there?With the exception of the couple of past few years,most of the players who featured for them were national team first eleveners.This same Milan side whooped us 3 years ago en-route to the title.What happened?Barring Gattuso,the spine of that 07 side played yesterday:Pirlo,Inzaghi,Seedorf,Ambrosini.Dida is still in the side,though on the bench.
Milan's problem to me is over-reliance on the same set of players for years on end.They have not agreed to transition to the future.
They need to freshen their approach to the game.Milan along with Madrid feel the heavens fell when they do not win the Champions League.But it is not a birthright.The insistence on having a coach from within the Milan circles is nepotic and short-sighted.They do that all the time when looking for a coach.I daresay it's almost impossible to coach Milan without having played for them in the past.That's why Leonardo isn't feeling the heat.
I know for sure Milan are having the cash they used to and Leonardo is probably the cheaper option,but that aside,one woulda thought there were better options other than a rookie coach.
To an extent,Leonardo's tactical naivety cost him,but over two legs,a seven goal haul over two legs against Milan cannot be denied.No matter how you or anyone try to discredit it,it's impressive.

I won't call it an overreliance on Old Players rather it's Berlusconi who refuses to spend.
