For failure to return to classrooms, the Senate of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has sacked all academic staff on its payroll with immediate effect. The sack order was made known by the Public Relations Officers (PRO) of the institution, Mr Chike Ezenwa, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune in Owerri, through telephone. According to him, the senate of the university had declared all the positions of academic staff in the institution, adding that they would be advertised starting from Monday, December 2. The senate council, he explained, had already compiled the list of vacant positions in the school, adding that who were willing to resume would be adequately protected. Continue... Meanwhile, the FUTO branch of ASUU has said any attempt to break their ranks would be strongly resisted by their members. This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end o their meeting held on Monday, and signed by both the chairman and secretary, Dr Ikenna Nwachukwu and Dr F.M. Eke respectively. The communiqué urged members to ignore the resumption notice by FUTO management, adding that the branch would not engage in any academic activities until the Federal Government commited itself to implementing the ASUU-FGN agreement. http://chrisderablog..com/2013/12/for-failure-to-return-to-classroom-futo.html |
Boko Haram militants launched a daring raid on the military in the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri overnight, prompting a 24-hour curfew that shut airspace and cut off roads, the army, state government and eyewitnesses said. Local residents said that hundreds of heavily armed Islamist gunmen besieged an air force and army base, destroying aircraft, razing buildings and setting shops and petrol stations ablaze in a deadly rampage. The attack, which closed Maiduguri's civilian airport and roads into and out of the city, comes after military claims that the banned group had been successfully pushed out of urban centres into more remote, rural areas of Borno state. Boko Haram has previously launched massive, coordinated attacks on the security services in Borno but the reported scale of the latest strike could make it one of the biggest against the military in Maiduguri in many months. In 2009, militants battled the security forces in the city for several days, leaving more than 800 dead. "I saw two air force helicopters burnt while in the whole of the 79 Composite Group (of the Nigerian Air Force) few buildings are still standing. Most of the structures have been attacked and destroyed," said one man, who lives nearby, of Monday's attacks."At the 33 Artillery (battalion of the Nigerian Army), the terrorists have destroyed the barracks and took away an armoured (personnel) carrier but left it along the highway. "We heard women and children in the barracks crying and wailing. At the gate, I saw some vehicles destroyed and the checkpoint there in shreds," said the man, a local government official, who asked to remain anonymous. The man, who said he watched the attacks unfurl with his wife from his house, added that two people had been shot dead. There was no immediate confirmation of fatalities or other casualties from the authorities. "Frankly speaking, if the insurgents had wanted, they could have killed all of us... because they came in large numbers... some with explosives, some with rocket-propelled grenades and some with AK-47 rifles," he added. The Borno state government and the military both confirmed the attack and the curfew. But the Nigerian Army's spokesman in Maiduguri, Colonel Muhammed Dole, said the Boko Haram fighters had been "successfully repelled" and had suffered "serious casualties", without specifying numbers. The areas around the airport were "calm and under control", Dole said, adding: "Our troops supported by the Nigerian Air Force aircrafts are presently pursuing the terrorists towards the Maiduguri-Benisheik road." Deserted streets Nigeria's government imposed a state of emergency in Borno and two other northeast states in May, cutting phone links in a move designed to block militants from coordinating attacks. Details of the ongoing conflict have as a result been difficult to verify. The latest violence began at around 3:00 am (0200 GMT) and included bomb and gun attacks, said an AFP correspondent in the city, where Boko Haram was founded more than 10 years ago. "They entered Maiduguri from the bush, chanting 'Allahu Akbar' (God is great)," said one Nigerian intelligence officer, adding that some insurgents had been detained, without specifying numbers. Ambulances were seen moving out of the air force base and the adjoining Ngomari neighbourhood, according to the correspondent. Roads in the city were deserted and the sound of sirens from military vehicles could be heard, he added. The insurgents had also ambushed military checkpoints on the outskirts of the city, while shops and petrol stations were also said to have been set on fire, local residents said. State government secretary Baba Ahmed Jidda called for calm, disclosing that only emergency service vehicles were allowed to move during the curfew, which would be lifted "as soon as the situation improves". Monday's attacks came after suspected Boko Haram militants killed 24 people in two separate strikes in Borno state last week and following a military pledge to tighten security in border regions due to fears of Christmas and New Year attacks. Miriam Carey, 34, the young dental hygienist who was gunned down on Oct. 3 after trying to ram through a White House security barrier, was assassinated by President Barack Obama because she had given birth to their illegitimate daughter, according to the delusional Reverend James David Manning of Atlah World Missionary Church. Carey was shot and killed after taking Capitol Hill police on a brief, high-speed chase; her 1-year-old daughter was in the backseat of the vehicle. Manning, a Birther known for making bizarre claims and attention seeking, repeated various theories on how and why President Obama met and began an extramarital affair with Carey — all of them ridiculous — that led to the birth of her daughter. The Federal Government has directed vice-chancellors of all Federal universities currently on strike to immediately re-open for academic and allied activities as directed by their pro-chancellors on Tuesday. The Committee of Pro-chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities had on Tuesday, unanimously ordered immediate re-opening of universities across the country. In a communiqué issued at the end of the committee meeting to discuss the protracted strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other issues affecting the Nigerian university system, and signed by its Chairman, Professor Kimse Okoko, the Pro Chancellors said the decision to re-open the universities was unanimously agreed by all pro-chancellors in the overall interest of all concerned. The pro-chancellors, in the communique, directed all vice chancellors to comply with the committee decision. The pro-chancellors were said to have reached the decision following findings that over 60 percent of ASUU members have voted in favour of suspension of the over four months old strike. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of State for Education, in a statement he read at a press conference in Abuja said the decision of the pro-chancellors must be carried out. The Minister also asked the vice-chancellors to ensure that staff who resume for work are provided with the enabling environment to carry out academic activities. The Minister said any staff who failed to resume on or before December 4, 2013 automatically ceases to be a staff of the institution and that vice-chancellors are allowed to advertise vacancies for their positions in their institutions. The Minister said this step became necessary because the Federal Government has come to the conclusion that the continued industrial action is an attempt by the Academic Staff Union of Universities to sabotage all efforts to address the issues, despite the commitment of government. Wike said as a responsible government, the federal government cannot allow the continuous closure of public institutions as it poses danger to the education system and the future of Nigerian youths. The Minister also directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to ensure compliance of the directives by the various institutions. P.M.NEWS also learnt that the Minister will meet with VCs of Federal Universities on Friday. Strike by university lecturers has grounded academic activities at all public universities since July 1, 2013 following dispute over the July 1, 2009 agreement between ASUU and the federal government on funding of universities and payment of some allowances to the teachers, among others. The lecturers also demanded the payment of N92 billion as backlog of earned allowances agreed to but which the FG has not paid since 2009. But after an all night negotiation the federal government, earlythis month, made a new offer of a yearly payment of N220 billion over the next five years starting from 2014 in furtherance of the contentious implementation of the 2009 agreement to ASUU. However, government said will only release N100 billion it had earlier offer to ASUU for 2013. The National Executive meeting of ASUU which was to consider the offer and decide on whether to call off the strike or not was called off following the death of the former President of the Union, Professor Festus Iyayi on 11 November in an accident which involved the convoy of the Kogi State Governor. Iyayi was on his way to Kano to attend the ASUU NEC meeting scheduled for 13 November. The Union subsequently suspended the meeting following the death of Iyayi, though most of its chapters had earlier voted to suspend the strike. But the Union said early this week stated that it will only call off the strike after a meeting with President Jonathan and payment of the arrears of salaries of its members which were not paid during the strike. Even before Thursday order by the government, some Vice Chancellors have ordered the re-opening of their universities. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Rivers State chapter, has reacted to the merger between All Progressives Congress(APC) and the Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led New Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State is a member. The Rivers State Chairman of the party, Chief Felix Obuah, disclosed yesterday in Port Harcourt that members of the party would organize a thanksgiving service to celebrate the exit of the governor from the party and to thank God for answering their prayers. Chief Obuah also said members of the party were not surprised about the 'official exit' of the aggrieved G7 governors from the party. Rather, he explained that the governor's defection to APC was a vindication of the party's earlier revelation. Obuah, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Jerry Needam, said PDP welcomed the development, describing it as a big relief. According to him, the leadership of the party had continued to tolerate the actions of the governor over a period of time, both at the state and national levels, He explained that with his defection the party now stood a better chance of delivering dividends of democracy to the people "The party further congratulated all those who have over the period, joined hands with its leadership in fighting against dictatorship, impunity and abuse of rights of the citizenry in Rivers State. The PDP however, wishes Governor Amaechi and his supporters best of luck in their future endeavour," the statement said. Reacting to the merger, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Tony Okocha said: "In recent times, it is the best thing that has happened to our democracy, because, it is a merger of like minds. People who are resolved to catapult the country from the dungeon that we are now, to an apposite point. It is a good omen for the country and our democracy. So, we thank God and bless God for the day. SOURCE: http://chrisderablog..com/2013/11/obuah-rivers-pdp-to-celebrate-amaechis.html |
Comedian Julius Agwu has dragged telecoms giant Etisalat to court for blocking his business line. He is demanding for N100million as compensation for jobs lost, contact lost, for the inconveniences, and for being mistreated by Etisalat staff. Below is a statement from his lawyer, Festus Keyamo... We are solicitors to Mr. Julius Agwu, one of Nigeria's most sought after entertainers (hereinafter referred to as "our client" and on whose behalf we write. Our client is the owner of the Etisalat GSM phone number 08189555555, which he uses as his business line. On the 8th of October, 2013, our client travelled out of the country and returned on the 17th of the same month. Upon his return, he tried severally to make calls from the aforestated GSM line but same could not connect. Not only could he not make calls, he also could not receive calls on the said GSM line. This continued for some days until he got a message that his line had been blocked by the network provider. Sequel to the above message, our client promptly visited your Abuja office at Hilton to report the matter. He was attended to by one Miss Joan, who informed him that somebody swapped his line. After our client successfully answered the security questions put to him, he was informed that his line had been restored, but the credit balance on the line was not returned. Surprisingly, our client's aforestated line was blocked again after he left your said Abuja office. Once again our client visited your office at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Ikeja, Lagos to lodge a complaint, but painfully, nothing was done about it. However, after sometime, our client was invited for a meeting at your head office in Lagos on the 14th of November, 2013 which he duly honoured. Present at the meeting (in addition to the officials of your organization) was Mr. Mobolaji Okusaga, the Managing Director of The Quadrant Company, in his capacity as media agents/managers for Etisalat Nigeria. At the end of the meeting, our client was told for the umpteenth time that they would get back to him, which they again failed to do. LOSS OF BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES It cannot be over emphasized that your actions of unlawfully blocking and/or swapping our client's line occasioned loss of business opportunities to him. As you are aware, our client as one of the most sought after Nigerian entertainers needs his phone line to be easily accessible to keep his business going. It therefore goes without saying that our client has lost some business opportunities as a result of your actions. TAKE NOTICE that we have our client's firm instruction to demand and hereby demand the sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) as compensation for the loss of business opportunities and the inconvenience caused our client by reason of your unlawful and unjustified blocking and/or swapping of our client's Etisalat GSM phone line. TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that in the event that you fail, refuse or neglect to accede to our above stated demand within seven (7) days from the receipt of this letter, we shall be compelled to set in motion against you, all legal machineries necessary to obtain legal remedy for our client. Thank you. Yours sincerely, FESTUS KEYAMO, ESQ. Source: http://chrisderablog..com/2013/11/comedian-julius-agwu-sues-etisalat-for.html |
A 15 year-old boy named Kieran Obazee was shot and stabbed on Friday Nov. 22 at his east London home by gang members in what police believe may have been a case of mistaken identity, Daily Mail reports. Fortunately, Kieran survived the vicious attack and but is in a serious condition in hospital. Five men wearing balaclavas and armed with kives and a gun forced their way into the home in Plaistow just before 3am on Friday. A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Detectives believe the attackers were looking for a member of a gang and attacked him by mistake. This morning a Scotland Yard spokesperson said: 'The person who may have been involved in a gang was staying at the address and they may have been the target, but the boy who was attacked had no criminal background.' Shocked residents of the estate in Plaistow told how they rushed to the injured boy's aid after his terrified mum ran door to door screaming for help. One neighbour told how they administered first aid. The neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said: 'It was quiet on Thursday night, all I heard was the banging as they booted the door in and then another bang, but it didn't sound like a gun shot to me at the time.' The neighbour said they could see a woman banging on other neighbours' doors and screaing 'please help my son' when they looked into the street. Nigeria high Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers state has reinstated the sacked chairman of Obio-Akpor local government, Timothy Nsirim and 17 Councillors. The court declared the sacking of the council boss as unconstitutional and the appointment of the caretaker committee as null and void. Justice Lamikanra directed the state Government not to interfere in the operations of the Council. In a swift reaction, the Rivers State government in a statement signed by the Mrs Ibim Semenitari, Commissioner for Information and Communications said the trial judge erred in law by acting in total disregard of a subsisting case in the Court of Appeal filed by the State government for a stay of proceeding, but went ahead with the judgment. The Appeal Court has fixed ruling on 28 November. However, Mrs Semenitari said the state Government will abide by the Court judgment and appealed to the people of Obio-Akpor to remain calm. Meanwhile, the Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said it was impressed by the ruling. The party through a statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman, Jerry Needam described the nullification of the Caretaker Committee and the reinstatement of the Timothy Nsirim led executive as a victory “over intimidation and dictatorship”. Needam said the PDP appreciated the rare courage of “Hon Justice Lamikanra for shunning all acts of intimidation, blackmail and attempts to cow her to hands off the case, stressing that if all judicial officers will exhibit such steadfastness, our society will be better for all.” --- Source: http://chrisderablog..com/2013/11/court-in-rivers-state-reinstates-sacked.html |
