ANKARA, TURKEY — President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, said he has no ambition to stay in office beyond 2015, assuring Nigerians in Diaspora that while he will not contest the 2015 election, he will ensure that this year’s election is free and fair. The President promised that if voted in for the next four years, he would ensure significant improvement in key sectors of the economy — security, power, education, road, health amongst others. “Without security, there is no government. So it is not debatable, it is something we have to addressed and we are working towards that with vigour. But if I’m voted into power within the next four years, the issue of power will become a thing of the past. Four years is enough for anyone in power to make significant improvement and if I can’t improve on power within this period, it then means I cannot do anything even if I am there for the next four years.” Jonathan said this while interacting with Nigerians mainly diplomats working in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, UNECA, and the African Union, AU, in Addis-Ababa. While fielding questions from those present at the interactive session on whether Nigerians abroad will vote, Jonathan said: “I would have loved that the Nigerians in Diaspora vote this year but to be frank with you, that is going to be difficult now. Presently, the law does not allow the voting outside Nigeria and so this year Nigerians in Diaspora will not vote but I will work towards it by 2015 even though I will not be running for election.” On the issue of security, Jonathan said the government was doing everything possible to arrest the situation. He disclosed that all those involved in the October 1 bombing had been arrested and were being prosecuted. He, however, said he ordered the release of the car dealers because they were just businessmen who could not have known that the vehicles were to be used for such heinous crime. On education, the President said, the nine new approved universities were to be specialised and to be headed by at least three Nigerians experts in Diaspora. On the concerns raised of having a database of Nigerian experts in Diaspora, President Jonathan assured that he was working on creating a forum for interaction between them and government and also develop a database, where experts needed to address the various challenges of the economy will be drawn. He hinted that this was why the Diaspora Commission was being set up as the bill was already before the National Assembly. The President also disclosed that the government is looking towards reviewing the country’s foreign policy to ensure that Nigeria gets maximum benefit from its roles and contributions to international organizations like the AU, UN and ECOWAS. He lamented that right now Nigeria’s contributions were not being recognized adding that “there is need for Nigeria to have something in return for our investments. We are investing so much but it is not being noticed and there is need to reverse that trend. On the concerns about road network and transportation in the country, President Jonathan assured that the railway system will be revamp because presently heavy duty vehicles were destroying the roads. “Why we cannot have continuous road maintenance for now because no contractor wants to go into it because of the continuous pressure on the road by heavy duty vehicles. That is why we are working to ensure that we revamp the rail”. The President also assured that Nigerians working in international organization and institutions would be issued diplomatic passports. He directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Odein Ajumogobia to submit the list of those qualified within the shortest possible time to him. On the 35 per cent affirmative action implementation and the domestication of protocols signed, he assured that he will present before the National Assembly within the shortest possible time Sources- http://www.chrisderablog..com/2013/12/ill-not-contest-2015-election-jonathan.html#more |

They first run the soldier down with their car while he was returning from an errand, then mutilated and nearly beheaded him in a crime that happened in broad day light. It took the jury only 90 minutes to come back with a guilty verdict. Adebolajo reportedly kissed the Koran and smiled as the verdicts were read but Adebowale didn't react. President Barrack Obama acknowledges applause before speaking at the memorial service for former South African president Nelson Mandela at the FNB Stadium in Soweto near Johannesburg. (AP Photo/Matt Dunham) Source: AP Mr Obama thanked South Africa for sharing Mandela with the world, and said the politician had taught us the power of action, but also the importance of ideas and reason. "It is hard to eulogise any man ... how much harder to do so for a giant of history, who moved a nation towards justice,'' Mr Obama told the crowd and a worldwide TV and internet audience. The US president compared Mandela to Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln and urged the world to act on Mandela's legacy by fighting inequality, poverty and racism. He said progress in the US and South Africa mustn't cloud the fact there's still work to be done. Mr Obama called Mandela the last great liberator of the 21st century, and says he thinks about how to apply Mandela's lessons to himself as a man and as president. "And while I will always fall short of Madiba's example, he makes me want to be a better man," Mr Obama said. Former Nigeria captain, Sunday Oliseh, is quite confident that the African champions will paddle through their 2014 Fifa World Cup group to reach the round of 16. Oliseh said he is "ecstatic" like his countrymen following Friday's World Cup draw in Bahia, Brazil that pitched Nigeria's Super Eagles in Group F alongside Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran. The member of the Fifa Technical Study Group took time to talk on Nigeria's opponents ahead of next year's World Cup. "The Nigerians are ecstatic, myself included, because we have Iran in the group - with all due respect to them I think we should be able to negotiate this encounter. "We've also got Bosnia, who are playing for the first time in the World Cup finals as a nation. Our chances are pretty bright and it's looking interesting," Oliseh told CNN. The former Borussia Dortmund and Juventus man also spoke of the prospect of the Super Eagles coming up against Lionel Messi. He also reeled out the qualities of the FC Barcelona talisman. "Messi is one of the best to have ever played football. He can do everything except head the ball. The question is how do you stop him? "You can't really if he's on a good day. What we need to worry about is Messi going to be healthy come 2014? If he is healthy, we have a problem. But we have nothing to fear - for the first time in a long time we feel we have nothing to lose," said the 39-year-old ex-Nigerian midfielder while on CNN analysing the World Cup draw. Oliseh then warned that all 32 nations know "what is at stake" at the Mundial and believes it is not time to start celebrating or despairing over favourable or unfavourable draw. "Every team going there knows what is at stake, it's no joke. You can dance to Copacabana (now because of the draw) but come six months your opponents might dance and that's the danger," he warned. Oliseh made 63 appearances for Nigeria and scored four goals. He also played in two World Cups in 1994 and 1998 when he scored a stunner against Spain. They had smiled and posed for photographs on the red carpet and then enjoyed an animated conversation with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. And if Zindzi and Zenani Mandela had any idea that their father's long life was drawing to a close, they did not betray it for a minute. Then, in a single instance, everything changed. As they were about to watch the London premiere of his incredible story, the sisters were apparently told that the 95-year-old had died peacefully at home after months of illness. Tearful and flustered, they tried to compose themselves. The two women were said to have left the cinema immediately, but when asked if they wanted the film - Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom - to continue, they said yes. It was an extraordinary premiere. Few in the Odeon auditorium in Leicester Square knew what had happened and settled down to enjoy an evening celebrating one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century. In fact, i know how i would have reacted to such negative news... The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were informed of his death discreetly by an aide shortly before the end of the movie. The Queen today expressed her shock at the timing of Mr Mandela's death, saying: 'It was extraordinary because William and Catherine were at the film. 'They were clapping like mad and somebody came on and said, "can you just listen please, we have just heard he has died". It is amazing isn’t it. During the first night of his film.' Prince William, Duke of Cambridge meets Zindzi Mandela (right), daughter of former South African president Nelson Mandela It was only after the credits had rolled that the film's producer Anant Singh got on the stage to break the news to the rest of the audience. There were screams and gasps of shock while some burst into tears. A two minutes' silence was held. Eleanor Simmonds, 54, from Croydon, who was at the premiere to support a Mandela charity, said: 'There was an audible sharp intake of breath. It was shocking news to hear at the end of the film. Everyone was shocked,' she said. 'I was really, really sad news because it was a wonderful evening.' William and Kate looked ashen-faced as they walked down the stairs into the foyer. Speaking as he left the Odeon cinema, the Duke said: 'I just wanted to say it's extremely sad and tragic news. We were just reminded what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was. 'My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. It's very sad.' The Duchess of Cambridge meets Nelson Mandela's daughters Zenani (left) and Zindzi at the Royal Premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in London shortly before they learned of her father's death Shortly after the Royal couple left, shocked members of the audience began emerging from the cinema, in silence at first. The cast, whose after-show party was promptly cancelled, were too upset to speak. In the foyer, security men surrounded Naomie Harris, who plays his wife, Winnie, as she walked slowly past, head down and close to tears. Family affair: Zindzi Mandela on the red carpet at the Royal film performance of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom In a statement Idris Elba, who is tipped for an Oscar for his portrayal of the great man, said in a statement: 'What an honour it was to step into the shoes of Nelson Mandela and portray a man who defied odds, broke down barriers, and championed human rights before the eyes of the world. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.' Source:http://chrisderablog..com/2013/12/mandela-daughters-learned-of-death-just.html
