Many people do not see anything good or benefitting from wars, infact i earlier told my mom and brother that as much as fighting wars is very bad, it also has its benefits, immediately, she gave me that kind of look, that automatically means keep quiet, its like you dont know what you're saying.

I then went on to state some reasons why i think it was, and i was able to draw her to my own side of the fence.....

The two great wars in history, the World War I, and World War II, has left an unforgetable feeling on billions of humans over the course of history, millions of people died, millions were affected, millions were displaced, countless more were left disabled, and in the case/as a result of the atomic bombs dropped at nagasaki and hiroshima(Japan), thousands got infected with cancer.

But, in the midst of these sorrowful events came a blessing in disguise...
Scientific, Human, Technological, Environmental Upliftment and Advancement.

The world wars, greatly influenced and fast forwarded the luxiries, achievements, medicinal, and technical know hows that we're currently enjoying today.

I will now go on to state and elaborate more on some of these advancements...

1. Blood Banks: You know when someone losses so much blood that they are said to be in need of blood immediately... Well in those days blood transfusions were carried out but it had to be directly, because no one had figured out how to store blood just incase someone needs it urgently. But during the course of the world war, a doctor by name Peyton Rous discovered that by adding a salt solution with the addition of sodium citrate to prevent clotting & dextrose as a source of energy, blood could now be stored for a long period of time. This ladies and gentleman, saved countless lives and paved the way for modern blood banks we now know. If it werent for the war, its quite possible that such an achievement would have to happen years later.


2. Infection Control: After over a 100 years, the world still remembers Florence Nightingale during the crimean war in the 19th century, she hospital wards were cleaned and ventilated. Making sure doctors adhered to cleanliness and hygiene, this helped in curbing out infections caused by dirts on open wounds. Fleming, in 1928 discovered penicillin which was initially overlooked, but during world war I, it was introduced as an infective drug for controlling infection..These acts helped to reduce mortality rate drastically.

3. Even our own civil war, made us technologically advanced, the only problem we had was that we didnt use the war as a driving force to our greatness as a nation.

The biafran troops made a makeshift bridge within hours of the main one being collapsed.
The biafran troops built refineries which they used in processing crude oil, Underground bunkers, Ambulances, weapons, surface to air missiles e.t.c. were also built by the troops as well as the Nigerian army. How long did the war last? Approximately 3yrs, yet the nation achieved so much scientifically and technologically, than it has over the last few decades. Airports were constructed on areas previously crowded by forest trees, do you know the cost of building an underground bunker?. Yet that was done within months on a tight budget.
Japan utilised the bombings of their cities, by dedicating themselves to creating a better country, they delved into creating buildings, automobiles e.t.c. Now Japan is one of the worlds most technologically advanced nation.

4. Internet And Radio: Our beloved internet which we currently enjoy and spend hours on, as well as the Radio, occupied by radio stations were all, propounded in moments of conflicts and wars. In other to have an edge over other nations and supposed enemies, different countries devised means to be able to send information over a wide area, this time around not for writing but infact to hear ones voice on the go leading the invention of Radio.
Today the internet is the greatest tool for communication......

5. Space and Rockets: History students would/should be familar with what was termed space race/war between the then soviet union and the united states.
After the second world war, they both struggled to have a scientific edge over themselves. With previous knowledge of Rocket propulsion and other mechanical components discovered during the war both nations attempt to reach space dragged on, with the U.S managing to get there first.


6. Ultrasound: This in itself is a product of war,it was first used by tank engineers to discover cracks in the armour, today it is a fantastic medical tool many things including scanning the body to check for cancer and also scanning pregnant women to check the foetus, sex of the baby e.t.c.

7. Synthetic Rubber: Again i'll use the world war as a reference, during world war I in 1917, a vehicle company named ford delevered thousands of trucks to the United states, and during that same period Germany's supply of natural rubber was blocked by the allies, this led to a bad problem, with no tires, cars cant move. Which led to a company in Germany to produce alternatives to natural rubber though it wasnt as good as the natural one. It was non-the-less very useful. That singular act, now kickstarted the mass production of synthetic tires which have been modified to be effective.

8. Plastic Surgery: The fact that Human body parts especially the face can now be reconstructed effectively is all thanks to war, 70 years ago, war casualties mostly involved civilians and soldiers who had parts of their faces chunked off, and needing reconstructive surgery to correct it.
A whole medical center, thanks to Gillies, a New Zealand surgeon. Was formed to study ways to help these victims, more than 5;000 patients were treated.

As recently as 2013 abiut 11million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the U.S alone, Millions have benefitted, and millions are still benfitting from it.

Other scientific advancements directly influenced by wars are: Sophisticated airplanes, Better Building practices, Automobiles, etcetera.
