of the sentence originally imposed on him in September 1963:
AND WHEREAS the Supreme Military Council after reviewing his case, is
pleased to remit the sentence and to grant a full pardon:
NOW THEREFORE, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 101 (1)
of the Constitution of the Republic and of all other power enabling it
in that behalf, the Supreme Military Council do hereby remit unexpired
portion of the sentence imposed on the aforesaid chief Obafemi Awolowo
and grant him a full pardon.

Awolowo, evidently, had a constant review of the Yoruba situation and took different path. That’s it. I don’t blame him for it. I have never done"

It was under the principles of decree 8, that Ejoor refused federal troops from invading Biafra through the Midwest .

The Midwest declared neutrality and Ejoor was a go between negotiator between Lagos and Enugu.

Ibos fleeing the western region were never harassed by Midwestern peoples instead they provided fleeing Ibo refugees with food and money.

Gowon had rightly refused to arm Ejoor because he feared of the loyalty of the majority Ibo Bendelites under Ejoor.

These same Ibo Bendelite officers and men of the Midwestern army will prove Gowon right after they mutinied against Ejoor (an Urhobo man) and allowed Biafran troops to invade and occupy the Midwest.

The Midwest military junta headed by one Okonkwo took orders from Enugu and will later declare Midwest seccesion from Nigeria.

Biafran troops occupying the Midwest will begin harassing , abducting and killing non Bendel Ibos claiming they were traitors of their own country.

The non Bendel Ibos will unify into a single ressistance force to terrorise the Biafran occupiers.


Then Ojukwu decided to use Midwest as a staging ground to invade the western region claiming he was going to liberate it from Hausa fulanis.

Ojukwu was the sole military administrator who openly sang praises when decree 34 was announced by Ironsi.

Gowon did proposed decree 8 to return Nigeria back to a federating Republic that it was at independence.

Ojukwu kicks against it and insists that Gowon return back to the military status quo using decree 34.

Gowon created old Rivers and old Cross River states out of the old east - a clamour that was being made by its citizens since 1953 almost immediately eastern region was created.

Ojukwu, who had led the brutal clampdown on Niger Delta seperatists movement that sprung up after Ironsi announced decree 8, will drag same people into his Biafra claiming he was liberating them from Hausa -Fulani. This is despite the fact that the same Niger Delta people had secured an alliance at the federal level from the north, west and Midwest representatives in the federal parliament to assist them in getting their own seperate region (COR region). Then Jan 15 coup happened and Ironsi seized power the very next day.

Another interesting pointer is that decree 34 was drafted on the very same day Ironsi seized power but only announced a few months later which proves that the decree was premeditated and planned alongside the Jan 15 coup.

The main aggressors and belligerent party were the Ibos.

All the revisionism that paints the Ibos as hapless victims who suffered from envy and jealousy of every other nationality in Nigeria is totally false.

Decree 8 was being proposed by Gowon to which 3 out of the 4 military heads of regions had already agreed in principle to support. Ojukwu as military administrator of the eastern region was the only one who opposed it.

Decree 8 was proposed to put an end to Ironsi's dissatrous Decree 34 aka unity begging decree.

Decree 34 was roundly rejected by all regional heads other than Ojukwu who sang praises on it when Ironsi made its proclamation.

Decree 8 was not only meant to return Nigeria to its original regional setup but to also strengthen it further by making provisions for each region to have its own standing army.

Ojukwu refused to attend the meeting in Lagos claiming he did not feel safe coming down to Lagos.

Ojukwu will fly down by chopper to Benin to meet Ejoor to be briefed on the resolution reached in Lagos on decree 8 and stated his total objection to it.

A few weeks later, Ojukwu will invade Midwest knowing fully well that once decree 8 came into force, Ejoor would build an army made up of non Ibo Bendelites. At that time, Bendel Ibos sympathetic to the Biafran cause dominated the army stationed in the Midwest. Most had been recalled from both the north and western regions following the northern mutiny that saw to Ironsi's murder and ouster.

The lie that Gowon created our centrist government at the detriment of regions is totally false as Gowon promolgated Decree 8 towards abolishing decree 34 towards retuning Nigeria back to here original template.

Gowon will later create states which saw Ojukwu do the utmost stupidity and drag the already Ibo weary annexed lower Niger regions that had now been finally free from the Ibo eastern region , into his Biafra .

Seeing that Gowon had refused to arm Ejoor over fears that the military in Midwest were mainly Bendel Ibos sympathetic to Biafran cause, Ojukwu will invade and occupy Midwest.
