I am/was a fish farmer say, 2-3years back, but things changed so I quit or rather put the business on hold since then. But now am looking at coming back to the business, not large scale now. Let me say for fun, and in a small way. I am a pro in hatching and all. That's not were I need help.

I stay in Iyana ipaja area of Lagos. I need help in this various area:

1. How much would it cost me to build a vat, just one. 2. What is the market price for Female and male broodstock.
3. What is the price of ovaprim?
4. How much does fingerlin/juvernile cost now?
And please help with some other relevant infos for a fresh starter.

This is better advised in swampy areas usually for earthened ponds.


Earthened pond is good and cheap to operate sha. My only problem there is security and natural disasters like flood!

if u do ur home work well disaster is not visible. Good inlet n outlet...

Most table size vendors don't pay immediately some pay certain percentage and after some agreed period of time they pay up. If u want to be successful in catfish business don't defraud any farmer of his/her penny.

I used magnet feed at the third month, my cost reduced drastically. I just started with a new set and the rate at which the fishes are growing is like a miracle .

there are so many factors you must consider before u make this decision. all ponds earthen, concrete have there pros and cons. i will advise that you thoroughly study and analyze this, to help you make your decision. for me, its really not about weather a system is better than the other, its about effectively utilizing your available system and resources to the fullest. you can give details about the challenges you are having so people here can help!! regards.

# to a large extent earthen is less stressful, easy to manage compare to concrete ponds... u cnt practice some stuff in concrete pond e.g feeding wiv chicken offal. If u do @ harvest d fish will smell like shit. U can do all dt in earthen pond. If u can get a land pls do n enjoy fish farming to d fullest... MaNoviceAdvice

I harvested last Saturday, for the first time I made a very reasonable profit using the gelatine feed, a friend I introduced the feed has been thanking me ever since the rate at which they grow and gain weight with an FCR of 0.8 is amazing. You can start giving them from fingerlings

Robonski15, Robonski15, Robonski15 hmmmm dearis God ooo, I asked about d Agege outlet some days ago, u did not say anything when u even answer some questions after mine, well I was able to drive to Ikotun for over 1hr 30mins to get the Magnet Gelatin feed thanks to LarryShow who was also nice enough to help palette it to desired size. Am so happy that my fishes are enjoying it in SHOKI STYLE on like the AZONTO somebody said his fishes were dancing while eating the feed. On a serious note, pls Robonski15 help do something quick about the Agege outlet because it will be easily accessible to many of us, I could av driven there under 20mins. Did I also tell you that I encountered illegal police check point on my way back and trust our men in black they'll not let you go free when you are carrying something in a sack and promise my self that I must collect back my money anytime I av d opportunity of meeting you because na u cos am. Good evening NL. pls I want to venture into catfish farming on a small scale...I have been following this thread and I found it interesting.. I once had about 100 juvenile fishes last 2 years(2014) I used the geepee tank as my pond but the problem I encountered then was that they never grew at the same pace( one bigger than the other) though I kept them for my consumption., Now I want to start again cos I'm very much interested in the business.pls help as I don't vwant that to reoccur this tym around, thanks

I export my product, oven dried catfish abroad. So far, business has been good. I even need more buyers. My major challenge is the high cost of courier. How I wish someone can suggest a cheaper means of exporting on a small scale.

I think cargo will be the cheapest.

I need you guys help with the mortality of my 6day old fries in concrete pond. I feed them artemia, I change the water everyday, and siphon the dirts under the water with a small pipe or I clean with foam.
I also want you guys to recommend a good feed for them apart from artemia. Thank you.

Do you do flow through / run aerator?

Oya na lego... it's a 50X70X7ft pond earthen, I do flow through stocked 7000fingerlings feed wiv Aller Aqua till 3months b4 I start formulating local feed. Am a poor farmer can affor concrete pond ooo or aerator oooo #smiles!!!

ma Oga I just grade into big,medium n small. I restock d big n medium and smoke all d small size. The average weight of d big is 1.7 and d medium 1kg so @ 6month/7month is should hav 2.5 and 2kg respectively wic will be coming to Abuja.
