The issue with the analysis lies in the cost of the feed.
Point 1. It is not wise to use a feed that costs N9700/15kg bag for 2 months.Which of the foreign brands cost this much? normally cost of feed reduces as the pellet size decreases hence you can switch to lower pellete sizes as your fish mature
Point 2. You do not have to use foreign feed for two months, you can use for 5 weeks and then switch to vital feed/topfeed
point 3. The cost of the local feed in your analysis is outrageous. 20k for a 50kg bag of local feed!!! i.e. N400/kg
My advice is that you consider making your own feed to reduce feed cost.

This is outrageous like our oga has rightly said, skretting is 9500-9700 2mm. u can use 3bags of that n change to the like of chifeed wic is like 7500-7700 now, use 3bags of 3mm then start using local feed. with 300 u can compound very good feed and as they age u reduce to 250 den 200 for the last month....

We are thinking of starting with 1500 juveniles and breeding them for 4 months. Please what feed do we have to give them at every stage- from the 1st 2 weeks to the 4th month?..what is the cost of the feed and how long does a bag usually last for the quantity of fish we intend to rear? We are just trying to get a rough estimate of the money we will put into feeding them. Thanks for your response

AQUABREN FIRST MEETING

Aquaculture Breeders of Nigeria (AQUABREN) held its first General meeting on the 9th of July 2016, Hosted by Mr Robonski. Members from different parts of the country were present and also we had two guest speakers, DR OKI a Practicing vet doctor and Mr Alex the president of divine cooperative. Some of their advise was for fish farmers to venture into intergrated farming and processing, and also cutting of cost of production and marketing of produce should be the main focus.

Election was conducted by the electoral committee, some of the elected executives are as follows: Nuvermbarz Farm(president) Chilan farm (vp) Mr Kila(Sec General)
The meeting was a huge success as we also got to see ourselves and share indepth info with one another. Below are some of the pictures from the meeting..

Catfish may soon be out of the reach of the average Nigerian as the hike in prices of feeds has forced some fish farmers out of business, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.


[b]Some farmers who spoke to NAN on Wednesday in Lagos described the development as worrisome, calling on government to ensure price stability in the industry. NAN reports that Skretting Feeds had in the first week of June increased the price of a bag of its 2mm feed from about N5, 000 to N8, 000. A farmer, Mr Emmanuel Ogharegbe, said that many of his colleagues had since abandoned the business, due to arbitrary hike in the prices of feeds. Ogharegbe said the price hike did not translate to an increase in the price of fish as fish traders operated a cartel that could frustrate any increase in per kilo price of fish.

Another farmer, Mrs Josephine Obi, wondered how she would survive if the price of feed continued to increase. “On June 1, I received a text message from a woman who was selling feeds to me announcing an increase in the prices of feeds. “Early this year, a Coppens Feeds increased its price and we shifted allegiance to Skretting Feeds. Now, the price of our new brand has increased by more than 50 per cent. Her colleague, Mr Olushola Ogundele, who decried the hike in feed price, appealed to the Federal Government to come up with a policy that would ensure price stability in the agricultural sector. Ogundele said that government’s intervention was critical to forestalling the scarcity of catfish in the country.

Another farmer, Mrs Beatrice Okpara, said that most of her colleagues were no longer in the farming business due to power outages and the increasing price of feeds. “The price of fish meal, a major component for formulating fish feeds, increased from N500 per kilo to about N800 per kilo in the space of two months. “If it continues like this, it will affect optimal production of fish,’’ Okpara said. Also, Mr Joseph Makinde, a fingerlings producer, said the imported feeds were critical in raising fish in the early phase of their life.

NAN recalls that Chief Tayo Akingbolagun, President of the Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria, had on Jan. 11 told fish farmers to shun Coppens Feeds, over its arbitrary hike in prices. Akingbolagun said that the 50 per cent increment in the price of Coppens 2mm feeds, was a reflection of the company’s unfriendly posture in the market. He said that the 2mm Coppens Feeds being sold for N5, 000 suddenly increased to N7, 500 during the yuletide, a development that put many farmers into difficulty[/b].

Oga Rob! Let's form a cartel too... let move to local feed they will come begging us wiv their air-blown feed. We hav ppl that feed 8weeks seed local feed and @ 5months buyers complain of over-weight. I don't use artemia for my frie i use local for dem n I hav 95% success rate. My fish buyers call everyday to ask if I hav fish or hav som1 dt wana sell they buy @ my price now. My final advice to farmers is to stock wat deh can feed. Best of Luck!!!

Fish farmers in the house please help me. I bought some Catfish broodstocks recently and they have refused feed for 3 days now. What do I do? I've tried changing their water and refreshing them. But still yet they refuse to eat. Please house help me. Any advice?

Enough of second guessing. I'm about to start. Purchased half bag of 2mm and 3mm and four bags of 4mm Aller-Aqua fish feed today. Two bags of 6mm will be available on Friday. I've also booked for 300 juvenile catfish which will be delivered this coming Saturday . In God I trust. I need words of wisdom and encouragement. Constructive criticism is also welcome.

Pls gurus in d haus kindly assist ur sis here. I intend to get an oven for drying fish to enable me reduce cost, i hv not been able to get any around but was introduced to NIOMR in lagos. They have fish tech dept.that produce oven but their price is way too high (350k). The oven has thermometer,chimney, fan,oil collector charcoal chamber and gas pipe. Please wats ur take on such high tech oven and wats d price one can get good oven out thr?

Hello farmers let's be careful of ppl we deal or send our heard earn money to in the quest to buy feed, always consult deeply for pathing with ur money... just heard a story of a farmer @ Benin who just got burnt by 1 Abubaka and Desmond. Who were to send feed to him after he had pay into their account.
