PoliticsGeorge H.W. Bush, The 41st U.S. President And Father Of The 43rd, Is Death. by chily11(op): 6:55am On Dec 01, 2018
George Herbert Walker Bush, the president who managed the end of the Cold War and forged a global coalition to oust Iraqi forces from Kuwait, has died at age 94. In a political career that spanned three decades, he lost his bid for re-election and lived to see his son win the Oval Office.

The death of Bush — nicknamed "41" to distinguish himself from son George W. Bush, "43" — was announced in a statement released late Friday.

"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died," his son, former President George W. Bush, said in a statement released by family spokesman Jim McGrath. "George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens."

Bush's death comes months after the passing of his wife of 73 years, Barbara. The former first lady died in April.

Foreign AffairsUkraine Bars Russian Men Age 16-60 From Entry by chily11(op): 4:24pm On Nov 30, 2018
Ukraine will not allow Russian men aged 16-60 into the country following the imposition of martial law, Kiev says. An exception would be made for "humanitarian cases" such as those travelling to funerals. Russia says it is not planning retaliatory measures. Martial law has been imposed in 10 Ukrainian regions until 26 December.

The move came amid fears of a Russian invasion after Russian forces seized three Ukrainian vessels and 24 sailors in the Black Sea last Sunday. Ukraine said the incident was a flagrant violation of international law, while Russia says the vessels violated its territorial waters. It is the most dangerous clash at sea off Crimea since Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula in March 2014.

We both left home at 18.
You cleared JAMB
I got recommended.
You got UNIVERSITY,
I got NDA.
You pursued your degree,
I had the toughest training.
Your day started at 7 and ended at 5,
Mine started at 4 till 9 and
Some nights also included.
You had your convocation ceremony,
I had my POP.
Best company took you and
Best package was awarded,
I was ordered to join my platoon
With 2 stars piped on my shoulders.
You got a job,
I got a way of life.
Every eve you got to see your family,
I just wished i got to see my parents soon.
You celebrated festivals with lights and music,
I celebrated with my comrade in bunkers.
We both married,
Your wife got to see you everyday,
My wife just wished i was alive.
You were sent to business trips,
I was sent on line of control.
We both returned,
Both wives couldn't control their tears, but
You wiped her but,
I couldn't.
You hugged her but,
I couldn't.
Because I was lying in the coffin,
With medals on my chest and,
Coffin wrapped with tricolour.
My way of life ended,
Yours continued.
We both left home at 18.

I dedicate this to every soldier and uniform person out there, we don't understand what you do and the sacrifices you make, but know that we are eternally grateful!

PoliticsBoko Haram Kidnaps Another Set Of Girls by chily11(op): 7:00pm On Nov 24, 2018
Suspected Boko Haram gunmen kidnapped 15 girls overnight in a village near Toumour, southeastern Niger, the local mayor said on Saturday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Boukar Mani Orthe, the mayor of the town in Niger’s Diffa region near the border with Nigeria, said about 50 unidentified armed men seized the girls in a village about nine kilometres from the town centre.

On Thursday suspected Boko Haram fighters killed eight people working at French drilling company, Foraco’s water well site in Toumour.

Boko Haram has been waging an insurrection since 2009 aimed at establishing an Islamic state in northeast Nigeria. It has launched repeated attacks into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

The violence has killed thousands of civilians and forced millions to flee their homes in the large Lake Chad basin region.

Kidnapping of schoolgirls has been a Boko Haram horror mark, since its fighters in 2014 kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, in Nigeria.

SportsRe: UEFA Covered Up Ramos' Failed Drug Test For 2017 UCL Final by chily11(op): 8:35pm On Nov 23, 2018
chily11:
Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos failed a doping test after the Champions League Final against Juventus, but was not punished, according to Football Leaks.

The defender tested positive for a banned substance following the 4-1 Final result on June 3, 2017.

It was, according to Der Spiegel, L’Espresso and other sources in the Football Leaks group of media sources, not the first time that Real Madrid had problems with doping tests.

The report suggests UEFA accepted an ‘apology’ and explanation from the club as justification for the failed test and took no further action.

Ramos tested positive for Desametasone, which can be used as long as UEFA are informed ahead of time.

Real Madrid instead told UEFA that he had been given Celestone Chronodose, and the chief medic took full responsibility for the ‘error.’

The problem, according to the Football Leaks report, is that another problem had already happened in February 2017.

A surprise doping test at the Real Madrid training ground sparked tension among the squad and eventually the players only went ahead with the tests when performed by the club medical staff.

This is against the rules, yet UEFA accepted the results, as Real insisted the anti-doping staff sent were not ‘professional’ enough.

chily11:
Members of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, and officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Nnewi Division, Friday, clashed at the popular Nkwo Nnewi Market.

At least, one police officer and one member of the pro Biafran group were killed in the clash.

Members of the pro Biafra group were at Nnewi to drive home their stance of boycott of the 2019 election in the south east, except a date was fixed for a referendum to determine freedom for the people of the zone.

The protesters numbering over 2,000 stormed the market, with each member waving the Biafran flag, and chanting ‘no referendum, no election’.

The group moved round, telling Igbo people in the market not to participate in the 2019 general election unless the FG heed their demand and conduct referendum.

Trouble, however, started when police operatives arrived the scene in three hilux vans and tried to stop IPOB activities.

Members of the group were said to have first pounced on the police officers, destroying their vans and leaving two officers in the pool of their blood.

All lives matter...in my opinion, Nigeria politicians are behind this and as a firm believer of karma it will surely get to them.

PoliticsAtiku Reacts To The Death Of Men Of The 157 Task Force Battalion In Metele by chily11(op): 1:12pm On Nov 22, 2018
My condolences to the Nigerian Army over the recent attack that led to loss of lives of officers and men of the 157 Task Force Battalion in Metele, Borno State.

These deaths are very painful and the loss of even one member of our armed forces pierces my heart because these heroes did not have to die. They volunteered to do a job that keeps this nation safe.

The gallant men and women of our security services are our first and last line of defence against enemies of our nation and deserve the support and confidence of all Nigerians. We sleep well at night in our beds, because they stay awake uncomfortably in the fields.

I feel immense sadness when I think of the families they leave behind and pray for Almighty God to grant their surviving family members fortitude to bear up in a time like this.

These men and women gave their best and we must reciprocate their sacrificial giving. Therefore, instead of celebrating my birthday this year, which is coming up in a few days, I choose to rather celebrate our fallen heroes.

As such, I hereby declare an endowment to provide full financial scholarships to five children of our fallen heroes from the 157 Task Force Battalion in Metele up to whatever level they are able and willing to reach at the American University of Nigeria, Yola.

I further call on those who desire to celebrate my birthday, that instead of sending me gifts, they should donate their gifts and money to the widows and orphans of our fallen military heroes.

I also call on all Nigerians, rich or poor to do what they can for the families of our fallen heroes. They gave us all. We owe it to them to show love and support to the families they left behind.

Finally, I call on the FG to think about setting up a benevolent fund for the support of widows and children of our fallen military heroes, run by an independent body, to which the public and corporate bodies can pay in funds. This is the least that we owe these gallant heroes.

May God bless the Nigerian military. May God bless the Nigerian Army. May God bless Nigeria.

CultureHas Civilization Truly Stolen Our Heritage? by chily11(op): 10:41pm On Nov 16, 2018
The use of tribal marks as a means of identification and beautification among many tribes in Nigeria, for instance, the Yoruba tribe is no longer a norm and some Yoruba states have enacted certain laws that prohibit the use of the marks. Violators of the law are liable to fines or imprisonment (or both). In Oyo State, for example, the prohibition of tribal marks is an integral part of the state Child Rights Law, a law that imposes a fine or one-month imprisonment or both for violation.

According to the law "No person shall tattoo or make a skin mark or cause any tattoo or skin mark to be made on a child". Yoruba tribal scars have a variety of patterns and meanings.

Most obviously, they appear as a series of cuts and lines across the face to identify a person's family and regional heritage. Others, appearing as lizards or scorpions anywhere below the face, are a form of body art.

Though facial scars can be found across Africa, they are becoming increasingly restricted to people in the rural regions.

The Nigerian government has moved to outlaw the practice, but many states have yet to approve the law. Many human rights organizations argue that the scarring of children is abuse and have often associated the practice with female genital mutilation.

However, regardless of their efforts, facial scars are becoming harder to find for a different reason -- displacement of old ways by Western influence.

What is your opinion on this topic?
